Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How did you guys approach the secondary question of whether you're open to practicing in Indiana? I've never been to the state and know nothing about it.

With complete honesty.

Just think of why would it be advantageous to YOU to practice in Indiana.

Read in last years thread about the Interview

People said it was "closed" ...no gpa/mcat

a bunch of quick hitter interviews, scenerios, etc. Then one personal interview for about 20 mins
Do they then go BACK and look at your stats while making a final decision, or do you think once you get the interview invite, your file stays "closed" throughout the rest of the decision making process? thanks

Definitely looks at everything post interview. 14 committee members - each assigned a couple of people to read their files fully. They then present you to the rest of the committee and it's a simple majority vote.

Hello everybody!

I can see that you already have a ton of support from my fellow classmates but I wanted to open up my email to any questions that you may have, [email protected].

The supplemental application questions are so important (as I'm sure you know). Your answers can elevate you and make them look beyond a poor MCAT. As far as the Indiana question, I would agree, be honest - ask yourself why you are okay with living in Indiana - is there something about it that you are looking forward to? Is Indy like your hometown?

I'm very proud of our first class - stats are very high considering its a new school. It should not intimidate you - it should make you excited to be a part of a great school! We are already working hard at forming clubs with workshops and shadowing opportunities to help build the legacy of this school!!!

Good luck everybody

Kelly P.

Kelly could u speak on what types of clubs are being formed?

Clubs that are being formed include:
Dermatology
DOCARE International
Emergency Medicine
Fitness/Workout Group
Internal Medicine
OBGYN
Military Medicine
Oncology Club
Pre-medicine Mentoring Club
Public Health and Clinical Research
SAAO Student American Academy of Osteopathy
Significant Others Club
SOMA
Sports Medicine Club
Surgery Club
Timmy Global Health
Primary Care Family Medicine and Pediatrics
NOWPA
CMDA (christian medical and dental association)
SNMA student national medical association

among other general interest organizations, professional organizations and national organizations. There is a "club fair" during orientation for the leaders of each club to have a booth and promote it to the student body/get contact info of those interested.

Nicely said.

And more to come I would think. We are figuring it out as we go along but I think that everything will come together nicely. If you get in - trust that you have some bright and caring upperclassmen 😉

Yay for being complete. Anyone know when they will start responding to applicants or sending out interviews?

Were your LORs marked as received?

I submitted my secondary and LORs through Interfolio on July 11, and they still haven't marked my LORs as received.

Last year, i was in the first batch of interviews. I received the interview request September 7th for an October 5th interview.

Hope that helps!

GOOD LUCK 🙂

When did you submit/ complete your app?

lor submitted along with secondary on 7/10, lor still not received.

When did you submit/ complete your app?

I don't have the exact date. I remember when they updated us, they said they sent out interviews for the people they picked who had submitted before August 20(something). The only reason I remember was because I was complete that day in August. That memory could be distorted too - what an emotional time!

Don't hang on every word. They learned a lot from the first time - they could change things up.

Serenade theyvare starting interviews in september so I wud assume iis in aigust?

When did you submit/ complete your app?

I received my interview the same day as Kelly and we interviewed together 🙂 for our year they sent out secondaries end of July (I want to say the 30th) and I sent it back July 31st and was marked complete around that August 20 something date. So lesson is get everything done as fast as you can! Good luck 😀

I'm going to hold onto this secondary until after my LECOM-B interview Monday and pending result. If I'm not accepted, I would gladly attend Marian. If I am accepted, I could not justify the cost differential.

Has anyone who used Interfolio had their LORs marked as received yet? 😕

No. Mucom said they wud start reviewing lors the 17th and that it wud take 2 to 3 weeks to complete.

That's true there is a huge price difference, but I guess you'll see if PBL is for you. I interviewed at Bradenton and Marian and Bradenton was not my style AT ALL. Just keep an open mind because deciding what curriculum is for u is the most important 🙂

I agree 100%. Hopefully I am fortunate enough to attend multiple interviews. This will allow me to approach a school with no pressure, with an open mind and make a very educated decision on who will offer me the best opportunity to succeed.

If u got a Bradenton interview this early you will 🙂 good luck in the cycle! I just felt like giving you my two cents lol. If you have questions on either school feel free to message me!

Anyone know what day letters are uploaded? Just curious!

They started processing LOR July 17th and they said it can take 2 to 3 weeks to complete. As far as I know no one has their LOR marked as complete yet (I haven't and I'm confident I was among one of the first people to submit a secondary)

I have a feeling iis will start being sent around the beginning of August, seeing as they moved up their first interview date to September instead of October.
When do you guys start school Meows?

Greetings from MU-COM!

This is a friendly reminder that MU-COM's admissions process is paperless. As such, we do not accept paper letters of recommendation. If you choose to send paper recommendations to us, processing of your application will be delayed by an additional 2-3 weeks. For more information, see the attachment with your supplemental invitation.

MU-COM started processing recommendations on July 17th. Please allow sufficient time for processing before you contact us. Finally, you can check the status of your application 24 hours a day in our unique admissions portal.

I appreciate your interest in MU-COM.

Sincerely,
MU-COM Admissions

Just realized that I submitted my LORs without an AACOMAS ID (interfolio changed their website significantly from last cycle and I didn't figure out how to include it until just now). I realllly hope that doesn't screw me over for in regards to being early. slightly in panic mode now.

got the email about receiving my aacomas app and sending a secondary-how long generally will it take for them to send a secondary? thanks! looking forward to applying to this school!

it took about a week for me

For the question "did you have an undergrad premedical advisor" if there was a premed advisor at my school but I never used her because all of the premeds I know and talked to said she was of no help, and I preferred to do research on my own, do I say yes or no? At a large school like mine I basically did this for all of my academics, having met with advisors twice, and only to walk in for two minutes and declare my majors.

Thanks,

Heronsbeak

This was my situation. I think I said this earlier in the thread, but I explained I saw a random advisor once or twice to schedule classes, but it was never the same one and we didn't form a significant relationship. I went to a large public university so it was hard to not be like that. Didn't seem to be a huge issue, so I wouldn't worry much about it.

Yayyyyyy finally all of my documents are received! Status is showing all green 😀

I did the most meaningful experience.

Me too, but I also listed the other doctors with the basic info above the description. It ate away at my character count but I shadowed multiple physicians and I wanted to relay that too.

Oops, I've got to get better at reading through the thread more carefully. Thank you, though.

Not a problem. I couldn't remember if I actually did and I was too lazy to go through the thread on my phone lol 🙂 good luck!

why am i struggling with 1250 characters on why i want to stay in IN after graduation?
reasons: MUCOM's clinical partnerships, opportunity to bring osteopathic medicine to the state as one of the first classes at MUCOM, family in state, physician shortage.

Any adive on that secondary question? i cant seem to put it all together. Thanks!

I went with a fancier version of, "you have a ton of rural areas, I want a rural life....we should talk" 😉

I went with ive visited Indianapolis and liked x things and it seems like a good place to be a DO because y

Just put "Sure why not..:naughty:" They would enjoy the humor. I personally touched on what you mentioned above and tried to make my argument strong without pushing myself to REACH 1250

Has anyone had their references downloaded and application complete yet? I submitted letters via Interfolio weeks ago and they are still marked as incomplete in my portal. I know it takes a while for references to be processed, but wondering if anyone is complete yet.
