Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
lol stop trolling Ubquinator. I called a few days ago. they are understanding that most students send letter packets via VE. They fish out the 2 letters you stated on your secondary and ONLY read those.

Almost at the 10 day countdown for acceptances!! Its about time!

I count 13 days until the 4th... Don't trick me like that man!

Any current students care to shed some opinions on their school? Not a lot of info to be had for a 700 post thread.

More than 14 days for us oos/internationals!

Completed finally!!! Good luck to all. OOS (ohio) fingers-crossed

I have a cGPA: 3.56, sGPA: 3.71, MCAT: 25, and around 950 hours of volunteering. I am also an in-state applicant from MSU. What do you believe my chances are for acceptance?

There is a rumor that I have read in a few random places that MSU is very helpful when it comes to offering OOS tuition grants. I've even heard they offer so much as to bring it down to IS tuition.

I have no idea if this is true or not but I hope it would be. I have found the whole situation a bit mysterious

There was a financial report linked earlier in this thread to support that rumor. Basically, IS and OOS students had nearly identical debts after medical school.

I don't remember the link, but I did download the pdf when I originally saw it, see attached.

THANKS!
Started a little confusing with numbers of what happened to 320k debt until you read this link (thanks bamboo):

Assuming M1 = OOS, M2 = apply to qualify M2-M4 IS? I'm fine with that.

Hi all,
Quick questions about how letters work for DO schools. Mine were uploaded Friday and I've checked and so far all MD schools received them but not one DO school has marked mine as received. Is the process different for DO schools? Thanks!

Uploaded where? If you just sent your letters to AMCAS, they will not be forwarded to DO schools. You have to send your letters directly to each DO school you apply to.

My school has a letter service and uploaded them to virtual evals and I had to send the adviser a list of DO schools I applied to. I just have no idea how DO schools get hold of the letters after this.

They download it from virtualevals at their own pace. Give it time, as long as your school's letter service uploaded them, the schools will get them.

Thanks! I knew how the MD schools did it, just had no clue how it was done with DO schools.

tick...tick....tick....tick....waiting game.... :/

i wonder on that first day of acceptances how late they are going in terms of when your app was 'complete'...hmm...ex: is the first day of acceptances all the apps complete before august? just wonder how that works

Anybody know if MSUCOM reviews you for acceptance on the date your secondary application was complete or on the day your entire application was complete (i.e. all LORs in)?

I would higly higly highly think it is your entire application...would be odd if they offered acceptance without considering the entire application.

I meant more along the lines of our positioning. I know applications won't be reviewed until all materials are in, but will they review based on date of secondary completion or date that the application was marked as complete?

Would it be wise to upload a copy of my updated transcript on the secondary application site? I submitted my secondary a month ago, but my grades from summer semester weren't in yet, and I sent an official transcript to AACOMAS but the classes I took haven't been added and my GPA hasn't been updated. I'd like MSUCOM to see my 3.9 for this semester since my gpa is the biggest flaw in my application, especially since decisions might be made before AACOMAS updates my application.

I would say it would be a wise decision, especially since you state that your "flaw" is your gpa in your app.

I recently uploaded my summer grades/transcript from graduate school.

Just got a secondary this morning.

I was just reading the CIB and they highly recommend having turned in the secondary like 2 weeks ago.

Am I too late to the game?

I think that it is worth a try. Good luck! 🙂

Is Sept 4th the day they announce acceptance for OOS/Internationals also? Or is it just for IN STATE?

So they do a mass acceptance announcement at the beginning of every month correct? Or after Sept 4, they alert individually?

i believe they send out a new batch of acceptances every wednesday (or potentially thursday according to some previous posts?)

Also, what day do they download apps? I am submitting my secondary in the morning, wondering if I should send my letters today too.

It took 4 weeks for them to download my letters from virtual evals, so I would send them in even before you submit your secondary if possible.

I just sent in everything today. My MCAT won't be released until late September so I have time

Was just reading the thread from last year; some dude got accepted 5 days before classes started..:scared:

The secondary prompts are driving me nuts. The first one wasn't hard since it's practically "Why DO?".

The other 2... I'm stuck. Anyone have words of wisdom to get my brain going?

For the second I saw it as "how are you a leader now? and how will you be a leader in medical school?"

the third i had to read over and over to understand it, but it says " 3 aspects of PROFESSIONALISM " . Not aspects of a doctor, med student, health care provider, etc., just a professional. So I stepped back and imagined people who are professionals and thought of people in my life who I label as a professional. Then I looked for the 3 most important characteristics they demonstrate which supports this.

Hope that helps!

And as of today I am complete 😱 ...wow that was way quicker than expected. Maybe because I sent everything in on the weekend so it was all just on top of the pile.

Yup, I was complete pretty fast too. I thought my letters would've taken longer to download but they were added to my file a few days after they were uploaded.
