Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2016-2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There's a spot for submitting updates directly onto the portal! That's where I did a grade update a few months ago. I would also send a quick email to the admissions address just letting them know you submitted an update. In my opinion though, I wouldn't waste your update while waiting back for a decision, and save it in the event that you are waitlisted. You want to have something that will sway them if you're on the waitlist.
Does anyone know details on submitting updates to our applications? I have done a lot of things this year after I submitted my app. I already interviewed and am waiting to hear back, but want to do as much as I can.

Does anyone know anything about a good stethoscope for medical students? I see Littmann is recommended the most.

Most people go for something like the Littmann Cardiology III/IV. Just about anything will work fine, but it is the one piece of equipment that you will use endlessly throughout your time as a med student (so a good quality one is worth it).

So I just off the phone with the admissions department and I'm all set. Look at this email I got today in error. Oh boy I did not wake up happy

Dear Ulgarmoose,

We are sad to see you go, but happy that you've found a place to continue your medical journey. Please take a moment to complete our brief and anonymous survey requesting feedback on your decision to decline your offer

Thank you and best wishes to you,

Can someone send me the link to the accepted students group?

They're not going to require we get the IV since it's newer?
You aren't required to get a certain kind. The cardio III is amazing though so I would go for that.

They'll send you a link for the MSUCOM package they recommend from some company. I personally wouldn't get that one, you can make do without a top of the line opthalmoscope/otoscope and regular old fashioned BP cuff. The only thing you'll really need in residency and beyond is the stethoscope. I bought the "economy package" instead of the MSUCOM package and saved a ton of money.

Has anyone received their Student ID#'s/ Financial Aid information yet?

Under the Admission Offer tab, there's now a PID/PAN box listed in the menu. It has a bunch of information about when we will be receiving these #s (mid-march), enrollment, compliances, etc.

Nope. I heard it's supposed to happen in march though!

Thanks guys! I was just unsure because I didn't even receive an email about the second-look day, someone had to forward it to me. I just want to make sure I'm not missing out on other things!

Did anyone receive a confirmation email after rsvp-ing to second look day?

Typically before you begin your third year. However, I believe they do reserve the right to test you at any time.

Yes before third year but I've heard they will call for it for certain students who are suspected of abusing drugs. A classmate of mine in El had to drop a urine test this pass semester.

IF you have already been accepted does that mean they believe the courses I took already fulfill the english requirement?

No, they'll email you letting you know everything is in order and if you're missing anything. It's up to you to make sure you've met the requirements before matriculation.
Ok Thanks I just emailed them. They never did say anything about me needing to finish any courses in my acceptance email, is that what you meant?

No, in the springtime they will reach out to you if you're missing any prerequisites or transcripts aren't in. So probably sometime around nowish to April.

So if we haven't received one I guess it's safe to say we're good?
I mean, I just got an email the other day saying they were sad to see me withdraw my acceptance which I obviously didn't do so....

Might not hurt to double check!

Do we know statistics for waitlists? Does all of tier 1 get in usually?

I'm in tier 1 waitlist but i'm a Canadian student, does that put me at a greater disadvantage ?

I'm on the Tier 1 waitlist as a Canadian too, and honestly I'm not very optimistic. They have a cap on the number of seats given to Canadians and with the number of people who have paid deposits I wouldn't be surprised if they are at the limit already (or at least very close to it).

Does the site we choose have any effect on the clerkship rotation locations we are placed in?

Sorry if this has already been asked!

Anyone RSVP for the closer look day and receive an acknowledgement ?

I asked this earlier in the year and the answer is nope! Everyones on an even playing field lottery style!

I did but i also had a question in my email regarding the white coat ceremony, and so I got a response for that and a thanks for RSVP'ing!

Does anyone have more recent data on MSUCOM's allopathic match?

About 34% of the 306 in the class of 2017 are in ACGME match, from what I've seen on the forums so far , competition is fierce this year

34% is still really great. I am also wondering how everyone thinks the new accreditation system will affect MSUCOM grads? I have been interested in Gen. Surgery and am hoping this is doable.

No 34% decided to participate in the acgme match. Doesn't mean that they actually match but when you compare it to other school we had the highest match rate in the AOA because other schools students decided to go acgme so this year doesn't tell us much, next year will

Hey, is there a fb page for accepted students? If so, can someone message me to add me please? 🙂

Could someone elaborate a little about bit about the "maximum 12 weeks of any specialty" rule? Im just slightly confused about what this implies for say audition/Sub-I time.

For example lets say i'm interested in specialty X, so i rotate for 4 weeks in 3rd year to see if i like it. I then find out im interested in specialty X and decide to schedule auditions in that specialty in year 4. But I only have 8 weeks left in that specialty according to this rule. So are 2 4-week audition rotations enough to match a competitive specialty? Compared to other students doing 3-4months of auditions? I understand you can do 2 week auditions but ive read that sometimes these are suggested against in order to make a good impression on the program.

I was initially quite impressed with the amount of selective/elective time MSUCOM allows, but the rule seems a bit restrictive. I understand the reasoning for it and i very well may be completely off with my assumptions as I dont really understand that much. So if anyone that understands a bit more about this could elaborate id greatly appreciate it!

Sincerely- a guy with too much free time on his hands
