Midwestern University c/o 2025

So I have my interview on the 24th and I saw the schedule on the MWU portal but as I am not from Arizona I just wanted to check...it says it starts at 7:45 am but is this MST or EST (which would be my time)? Probably a silly question but I just wanted to make sure...

Hi, is 7:45 MST. If you are EST then your time will be 9:45

Alrighty guys. So, I’ve been accepted for Midwestern since October and was just accepted to South Dakota State University’s 2+2 program with Minnesota. I applied for housing at Midwestern at 6am on the day it opened, so fingers crossed I will get that (otherwise I am definitely choosing SDSU- the housing is a huge reason for me to want Midwestern). Meanwhile at SDSU I’ll have to live off campus because the on campus housing is even further from the vet buildings than some off campus apartments (safety being on vs off??). Keep in mind I commuted through undergrad. Cost will be the same at both. I am concerned that Midwestern doesn’t seem to offer anything in the way of exotic and non traditional pets or wildlife. SDSU will also be a class of 20 for the first two years. But I LOVED Midwesterns campus.Anyone have any advice on how to make this decision? I’m at a loss🤷‍♀️

I feel you! 'm in a similar situation as you. I've been accepted to both Midwestern and University of Illinois, and I'm having a hard time making a decision too! My husband and I are going out to Illinois in March to check out the University/campus/town.

Yea I’m going to SDSU next week. But I kind of want to have an idea in mind because while I’m there if I choose SDSU I’ll probably try to get a housing contract since housing fills up so quick (planning to live without roommates since my boyfriend and sister are planning to stay with me on occasion- and SDSU has a”no guest” policy in their on campus housing)

Hello! Congratulations are in order, first of all 🙂! When I had applied originally, I was also looking for more exotics exposure. I ended up not getting accepted into any other program but I've been happy with MWU so far. I was a little bummed that I haven't learned about exotics yet but, after surviving 2 quarters of my first year so far, I feel like I haven't learned enough yet about basic things to even think about learning exotics. Also, 4 species is a lot so far so my brain is very happy I don't have to learn anything else additional so far lol. I know that, starting sometime 3rd or 4th year, we start our clinicals and then we can get exposure to exotics, among other different specialties.

Keep in mind that all programs are geared towards preparing you to pass the NAVLE so, because the NAVLE mainly tests on dogs, cats, cows, and horses, that'll be what most curriculums will be focused on. However, MWU does have an exotics club (I'm on the board so you can hit me up for any information!) which puts on exotics/wildlife events which are very informative.

I definitely appreciate how close everything is. If you look at a map of MWU that they provide on the website, you'll see that everything is super close together. I currently live on campus but I know lots of classmates who live right across the street on off-campus apartments. Given that all programs are certified to teach you to become a vet, I'd probably think about what matters the most to you. If given the choice, and it looks like a lot of people in this forum would agree with me, I'd choose whatever the cheapest school is. It's a lot of tuition to become a vet and MWU is definitely NOT the cheapest program available. Otherwise, if you have the finances available, touring the campuses wouldn't be a bad idea either. Regardless of which school you choose to go to, you'd be making a good choice 🙂

Also, if you do come visit, feel free to hit me up! I think the school offers tours if you contact them but, if not, I'd be down to take you around campus too or answer any dying questions that the school wouldn't be able to answer.

We definitely learn about exotics throughout 2-3rd year. There’s additional electives, clubs, etc. you can do as well. One time the club took a trip to Belize to work with exotics there. Even though I’m not exotic focused I’ll be having clinical rotations at both Phoenix zoo (1 month long) and AZ game and fish (2 weeks).

Thank you! I actually visited in November, and loved the campus. I also need to consider what the schools plans are for teaching in the fall. Lectures online vs in person, that sort of thing. Personally I love online lectures, but I’m not sure which option really makes me learn more🤷‍♀️ Plus, I have to decide if I like the 20 person class size or the 100 person class size more. So much to think about!

Oh and sadly there isn’t really any difference in tuition. It’s like 10k less for tuition , but the cost of living there is much higher so it all ends up being pretty equal.

Anyone know when we will hear back about on campus housing?

OOS accepted but will be declining my spot since i committed to oregon state! good luck to those on the waitlist!

Congratulations! 🎉🎊 As a Midwestern hopeful, when did you receive your acceptance?

I interviewed 2/24 and it seems like no one has heard back yet? so maybe there's still hope lol
I interviewed 2/10 and still have not heard back either. I emailed them and they said they were taking 6+ weeks to let people know their status!

I think at this point they’ve made most of their offers and are waiting to see how many accept and decline their seats before making additional offers.

From what it sounds like they are still going to do required in-person labs and then optional for lecture (I live about an 1hr 10 away so I will be doing online for now) but does anyone know how many labs there are for the first semester?
If so do you remember the days you had it and the typical time?

It will vary since they’ll break you up into groups and try to vary and switch up times for you! You’ll get a rough draft schedule prior to starting, and then a more detailed one later.

Thank you! I was just trying to get an idea of how many days I will be on campus for the first semester. 🙂 I guess I am just too excited.

For my first quarter, we didn’t do dissections (we started during our second quarter) so I wasn’t on campus too often, but still about once a week. Once dissections started, I was on campus about 2-3 times a week on average.

Can someone tell me more about the dress code? I have been accepted. There is a lot I love about the program, but the extreme heat of Glendale- combined with a Business Casual dress code- has really impacted my excitement about attending!

I was in the last round of interviews last week and they said they would let us know in 1-1.5 weeks.

No such thing as too excited! We just aren't too sure what life will look like come the Fall start up time either, so fingers crossed we will have more on campus times available for you guys since the rules are everchanging right now.

No jeans (only on Fridays *in lectures, must be paired with a school shirt or business casual shirt), no leggings ( you may be able to get away with them paired with a shirt that can cover your behind), no tennis shoes (unless in labs, also okay on Fridays I believe), no flipflops, sandals must have a strap in the back. Never wear scrubs outside of the lab, you have to change back into your business casual clothes. Mainly student enforced but faculty take note of things like this.

Thank you! That doesn't sound nearly as restrictive as I pictured it.

Congrats!! Do you mind me asking how they let you know??
Just received an OOS acceptance!! Had already written them off bc I interviewed on 2/24 and was told we'd hear back within two weeks. I still can't believe i

Hi everyone! I interviewed a couple of weeks ago and have no heard back from MWU. Does anybody know if they’ll tell you if you’ve been denied or is it just limbo of the unknown?

Has anyone heard any updates in regards to on-campus housing notifications? I know they are hard to get, but I am still crossing my fingers!

Yea I got mine yesterday. But I wouldn’t worry too much, it was late in the day when I got mine, I’m sure more will come out today!

Thank you! When did you apply for housing by chance?? I don't remember when the housing application opened, but I am sure I applied late.

I applied at 6am Arizona time on the day it opened (I think dec. 4th?)

Hey ya'll! Okay so i've been trying to keep up with the thread but i've been trying to figure out whats going on to begin with! I have a few questions and will appreciate any feedback! Do we know about virtual/in-person classes starting in fall? Loans! Fortunately, I am a veteran and haven't had to take any loans out up to date, but I will for this program and have no idea how it works! Immunizations.... do we send in the records or how does all of that work (again, prior military and my previous universities waved all immunizations) Lastly, I submitted transcripts 3/30, but my Biochem class still says unmet which was completed in the Fall. Again, I appreciate any feedback!! I look forward to meeting the C/O 2025!!

Congrats on your acceptance! Highly recommend joining the MWU Facebook pages for all of CVM and your class page. The immunizations are submitted via your portal, no rush to get those as they give you a grace period of until November/December to get that stuff done. You go into “student service menu” on the portal then to “documentation upload” to upload PDFs of your vaccine and TB test proof. Although COVID vaccine isn’t required at this time, if you’ve received the entire series make sure to include this in the upload too.
Last I’ve heard, we are continuing the hybrid classes come the fall, but things change everyday on what we do! We have plans to let clients back into our clinic in early May, so fingers crossed classes come back for y’all.
Also don’t stress on the classes yet, they may not be marked as met/completed until closer to your matriculation. I had the same thing happen to me for my first year.

Ugh this eases my concerns. Thank you!!

Hey I accepted my seat, can I ask why you are declining ?
I was going back and forth between Midwestern, Auburn and Tennessee and decided on Tennessee. I loved Glendale and Midwestern when I visited, but the small class size at Tennessee, slightly cheaper tuition and their large animal hospital setup swayed me that way. Midwestern is great and I think you made a great choice!
