Midwestern University Chicago (CCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

Anyone get the secondary yet?

they will not distribute the secondaries until this application season is officially closed which will not be until they start classes in august since they can pull off of the alternate list through the first wednesday of classes in august.

if you wanted to get a head start the secondary questions are usually along the line of why ccom and what do you have to add to the incoming class

Thanks for this! I was wondering that! CCOM is my first choice and well, I am anxious to receive and turn in my secondaries and get that interview :xf: 😀

While I agree with the first part of what you said, I don't agree with the second (providing I am understanding you clearly). MD surgical residencies are still quite difficult for a DO to match into, regardless of USMLE score...which is shown when you look at match lists: there aren't many DO surgeons going to allopathic residencies (even fewer if you look, specifically, at Ortho and Plastics). Annually, this fact seems to be less and less true, but for now, the reality is that most DO surgeons will be going with AOA residencies.

On the other hand, and perhaps more aligned with the the above user was asking, I have not heard of any DO surgeons having trouble finding jobs after residency. In fact, I do recall a DO ortho resident, who is currently applying for jobs, turning down a job offer for ~450k/yr. Once the training is complete, I don't think finding a job will be very difficult.

this is just mho, but in any specialty field there are a limited number of spots. so while a good DO candidate may get turned down there are also MDs being turned down for that same spot. there are just limited spots in certain areas, it does not help that some surgical subspecialty fellowships are only allopathic and have no osteo counterpart so that is a problem. but again this is jmho.

Just curious, but why would they wait to send out secondaries? I would think that they can still pick off the alternate list while new applicants are sending in their secondaries. And then once the application season is closed, have secondaries ready to look at.

Limitted number of resources at admissions office, too many applicants each cycle...

school policy - the application season this year is not considered officially closed until they will no longer pull any applicants off of the alternate list. they will not run two application seasons at a time. they finish one before they start another. over the past few years if you look, no secondaries go out until mid august and interviews typically start about mid september.

It is a good policy and I will be happy when they are only putting their full effort into your applications. Relax Shab.... you'll get your shot

Really excited about the possibility of attending CCOM next fall. Anxious for a secondary, hopefully soon!

This is good information to know, but I was wondering if I could get your advice? I have submitted my primary application and it has been verified. Because I have not taken my MCAT yet, I have only sent the application to one school for verification purposes. My plan was to send the application to my schools of choice once I see, and am hopefully satisfied, with my MCAT scores.

I am scheduled to take the MCAT in four weeks but may push it back to the end of July/early August. Would it be in my best interest to send CCOM the primary now? Would this "reserve" an earlier position in their evaluation of primaries once they begin the process in August? I understand that they will not review the application until it is complete with the MCAT, but will I disadvantage and put myself farther behind others by waiting for the results and not submitting a primary now?

Thanks for any input.

Hey "mom," are you 100% certain? I was just looking at last year's thread yesterday (and confirmed just now), and it looked like supplementals were received by some as early as June 27th.

Thanks for taking time to answer questions!!!!!

While my experience may not be the norm, I highly doubt that 80k+/yr is the norm, either. I would say that most everyone should be able to get by with $70k, excluding any type of additional income via a job or work study.

Also, if you plan to work during the summer (probably a good idea considering that they pay you to do it on campus, from what I heard), you can apply that money towards the following year or hang onto it for spending cash so you will require less loan money the following year.

Good luck this cycle!

I'm expecting $70k to be the number I'm looking at for most schools. $50k tuition and $20k living expenses seems about average from what I've looked at so far. Thanks for the info!

if they release them before then they will not review until the application season is over for this year which will be in august.

interview invites do not go out until mid to late august and interviews start in mid september

Thanks for clearing that up for us

Could any current year three or four students talk about their Clinical rotation experence? Good the bad the ugly? What we need to watch out for, how to get in good with the attending and the best rotations for shelf or other exams?

Anyone know how stringent the "No C-" rule is? I emailed the dean, but haven't heard back yet.

How many C- do you have? If just one, why not to retake it? I'm sure you'll do great the second time. You have almost a year ahead of you to retake.

I am, but I'm wondering if my application will be thrown out by then.
No man, just update the schools that you applied about that you're retaking it, and then let them know your new letter-grade after you've knocked it down. If you haven't submitted your application, that's gonna be much easier since you can set it as a "future" course to be taken.

Well I was planning on retaking one of them so it's already on there. The other wasn't a pre-req and is non-science so I wasn't going to retake. I guess I'll update that too.

Thanks.

I would love to do this... I am going to be nowhere near there though

When were you guys released?

I received my secondary today and according to AACOMAS, it has a release date of 6/24/12, although at one point before it said 6/14/2012...there has been a lot of talk about that date change on this forum.

Got mine too...Are you guys just copying and pasting from AACOMAS for the CV?

It looks like they want the same thing as the primary app, but for us to make a resume out of it... Hmmm, busy work?

Same thing happened with mine. But I also received my secondary today.

I wrote everything out using the format that they gave and put a small description by each activity. NYCOM has something similar.

Sooooo happy I put together a resume for my LOR writers! love the prompts lol "Why is CCOM awesome? Why are you awesome?"

👍

I wrote out a whole damn CV...but I must add hobbies to make me look like a human with a life.

Also...to the question: "Why are you awesome?" Can I just write "because I'm a motha****ing sorcerer" and submit?

Released to schools 6/24.

I've had a CV for a few years now. Definitely didn't C/P, just tweaked it as needed. The "hobbies" part was all I needed to add.

I'm a little confused aswell. They are asking me for the same **** that is on my primary application but outlined as a resume, wth?

Ditto.

I would be careful how much C/P'ing one does for the CV and keep it professional.

What format did they give? Did I miss something? I only saw list of things like: experience, education, hobbies, etc... but it said nothing about particular formatting. Now I'm worried that mine is in an incorrect format (i.e. dates on left instead of right, or something like that).

HELP!
