Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
interviewing January 31st. Does anyone know how long it takes to get the confirmation email after you pick the date?

II today... I had largely assumed they were done with me.

I withdrew from my other acceptances/IIs once I got into KCOM but I am feeling like I need to check out NSU.

Thanks for the tip! I have been waiting for my confirmation e-mail for a while as well and just found it in the spam folder.

+2. Mine was in the spam folder as well. Thanks heroine!

EDIT: Anyone else interviewing on the 13th of December? I'm trying to get a group going for some pre-interview de-stressing (food the night before) 🙂 Shoot me a PM!

Whoever is interviewing soon don't forget to ask about the iPads 😉

What did u want to know about the iPads?

Supposedly the school signed a contract with Apple last week to supply students with iPads for the next entering class. This was during the November 6 interview. So if anyone goes to Nova and interviews, they can ask the staff to confirm if this is true or not.

I really hope it's true :xf:

Just picked up the Feb. 28 date. On the off-chance that I 1) get in and 2) like it that much, it'll be a tough sell to my folks since they're footing my deposit for KCOM 😳

I'll ask today! Interview is in like 2 hours!

Yes! Please, please let us know! I have been holding off on purchasing an ipad after I heard this. Feedback would be greatly appreciated!

what is this all about? can any of the current student comment?

Whoa, that's intense......

Just asked a friend of mine that is a current student at NOVA, lets see what she says.

I just read through the entirety of the facebook group and her website.

One of our professors spoke of this incident, as the woman kept posting these signs outside of Nova on public property. My overall impression is that this is an obviously disgruntled former student who, instead of trying to get help for her mother so she can continue with school, apparently decided to skip both midterms and finals and is now complaining about the ramifications of her decisions. I understand that emergencies are emergencies... I wouldn't wish upon anyone the experience of witnessing the deteriorating health of a family member. But it seems as though this former student did not do everything she could to stay in school. Administration will give you a zero, like any other school, if you miss an exam. There is a period of remediation, so she may have missed that, too. So then the picture potentially becomes: missed midterms, missed finals, missed remediations...

Still, I do not know the whole story of what happened to this former student. All we have to read is the public dissemination of her own biased interpretations. Either way, it looks like she burned any bridge she had that would lead to re-enrolling as a student at NSU-COM.

If my mother was ever in a situation like this, I would drop everything and be by her side to take care of her. I understand your need to defend your school, but I fail to see how you can think that she failed "to get help for her mother so she can continue with school". What if she didn't have anyone to help her out? Even if she did have someone to help her, what if her mother's worsening condition gave her no choice but to be there by her side? On her facebook page, she states that she kept the school in the loop regarding what was going on with her mother's condition. What more could she have done other than expecting the school to work with her in such a critical time in her life?

I am sorry if it sounded to you as if I was saying she did absolutely nothing to deal with the situation. That was not my intention. Rather I feel that we don't know the whole story and that there may have been something else that she could have done to prevent this debacle. I don't know for sure, and I doubt many people do, either. Believe me, if something similar were to happen to my parents, I would do everything in my power to take care of one or both of them. I would never criticize her for that. She did what I think most people would do in that situation. I truly believe we are missing something that can explain all of this. I would be reluctant to believe that a school would simply dismiss someone for a situation of this magnitude without trying to broker a solution. This was obviously a serious situation for her emotionally and academically. We don't know if she asked administration for a leave of absence. You say you would drop everything, I am assuming that means dropping med school for the time being to make sure you are available to help. I would do the same thing if it came to that. We just don't know exactly what transpired, so it is rather pointless to discuss this based only on conjecture. I realize that now.

Not trying to be insensitive, but she mentioned a weekly update of correspondence between representatives and her. I failed to find it anywhere. How is one to make an attempt to perhaps offer suggestions if again, all one has a biased view of the store from only one pov?

If that were the case with my mother, I also would do the same but given the commitment made to graduate studies and the financial responsibility the loans confer on oneself, I would try to maybe withdraw from the entire semester and bite the bullet on the loans but also try to talk to the administration about coming back the following year and take the rest of the time off to care of my ailing mother. Yes, family comes first but doesn't give me the license to be irresponsible with my actions and commitments to others.

Again, I don't know if she did any of this at the proper times when she was supposed to - maybe she just showed up after the semester was over and expected special considerations be made. No one really knows unless they know her personally or she posts correspondence between NSU and herself. But I do agree that with the signs and the website, she pretty much closed whatever doors might have been open to her. If she were to shoehorn her way back into NSU, would she really get a receptive audience in the staff or faculty after calling them bullies? Patience and an even head, as difficult as it might be to have those when family members are ill, needed to be exercised.

/gets off soap box so someone else can get on top of it.

Sounds like she was a first year and it just happened this year. whether this is real or she is just a disgruntled irresponsible failing student ifeel bad for her. And what's up with the students removing her protest signs?

Ok so my interview today went well! Really loved the school!

I asked about iPads and they said they are still reviewing how/if they would implement them. Their idea is to do testing on iPads too, so they still figuring out if that would work.

They do currently provide ebooks though.

They also mentioned they were reviewing their attendance policy to possibly make lecture not mandatory and have more consistent online recordings.

Glad you liked the school!

I'm curious to know what ends up happening with the iPad deal. I haven't heard anything about it thus far outside of here, a true SDN exclusive. A lot of people have the ebooks on their iPads. That and the Visible Body 3D app for gross lab. I love that app. Well worth the price.

Neuro, are you on fb? There's some relevant conversation there also on the group for accepted students. I think it might have been mentioned there as well.

they should have given her the option to repeat the first year instead of dismissing her regardless of whether she missed the the remediation.

I think there may be more to the story because the Nova medical student that gave me a tour should have been a second year but he didn't pass some of his first year classes so he is repeating them.

Do you recall him mentioning if he had to repeat the entire semester or just the particular class?

I can understand that. Then again, each school is different. We haven't touched the otoscope or ophthalmoscope first semester. However, when it comes time for Clinical Skills Exams, you need to bring the equipment. We had to bring our BP cuffs with us into the exams.

For real? The OSCE rooms don't have bp cuffs in them? Lameeeeeeeeeee.

Yes!

The lady doing my interview said she used iclickers religiously when I mentioned them in answering the question about what I disliked about taking undergrad classes after taking graduate courses. I told her I hated being treated like a freshman again and brought up iclickers. Don't know if she was just trying to see how I navigated a sticky situation I got myself in or if she really does use iclickers. She said it didn't count for a whole grade but it was used to quiz students and maintain attendance implicitly.

Sweet. I love iClickers. It makes sitting through a long lecture a little more bearable. But I'm one of those people that goes to class just because I like too

What's it like in your head? 🙂

I go to every lecture when attendance is not required. It is in my opinion a sign of respect for the students ability to be in control of their future. I return the respect by attending. Even when I teach now I don't require attendance and I have no issues with students not showing up.

Some people don't enjoy silly learning games and find it annoying and would rather just read the book or watch parts of the lecture when they are fully awake instead of at 8am. I am one of those people. People learnt just fine for 2000 years without iclickers. I don't need it being an integral part of my learning experience.

I don't mind their usage. I am against their forced usage.

I agree with it being lame to force usage. Most of my teachers use it for extra credit or to help break up 1.5 hour Biochem lectures. It's never been used against me for a part of my grade and agree that would be annoying. There are lectures I skip. Especially the ones were they basically regurgitate the book back to you. But I've been lucky enough not to have too many of those.

Everybody learns differently. What may be a silly learning game to you is actually a pretty beneficial learning tool for some people, like me.

On a side note, does anyone know how to pay the deposit? I have not received the packet in the mail yet, and am wondering if we can pay it without having to wait for the mail?

The packet gives you a site to go to to pay the deposit. If no one posts it by the time I get home I'll PM it to you.

IIRC you can go to the NSU bookstore website and "buy" the deposit. Make sure it is the Osteopathic Medicine deposit.

Also remember to select free shipping. 😛

I also have an interview at LECOM-B and I'd like to only pay for one trip to Florida (being from the west coast) so I'm trying to reschedule my Nova interview. Does anyone know if you lose the spot you have when you log into the page and hit 'reschedule my interview'? Or does it keep your spot until you pick a new interview date? I don't want to try and reschedule and end up being left in the dust until March or something...

Just got an II .... but it's not til February 15th. Does anyone know if I will have a legitimate shot at that time, or am I pretty much interviewing for a waitlist? My stats are 3.44cgpa and 29 mcat.

Someone did figure out a way to do it a few pages back. Sometime in September if I remember correctly. Go back and search to find it. I didn't need to do it, and I am too lazy to look for it right now. I am in the middle of cooking dinner and if I do something like searching a thread I would burn the spaghetti. 🙁 that would not make a good night.
