I know there have been a few threads like this popping up lately so feel free to ignore if that bothers you. Hoping to get a little more feedback before I make my decision. Although the schools are in vastly different locations, I liked both and think that they're both pretty much on par academically. Feel free to dissuade me of these notions. I have my own ideas, but I thought I'd ask to see if there are any big points that I missed (and no, the Touro merger isn't a factor for me). I'd be especially interested to hear about student life at NYMC, which is an area in which my info is lacking. Thanks in advance for your help.

What specifically would you like to know? I could just answer generally but maybe you have some more specific questions...

My biggest questions are about NYMC, specifically the non-academic student experience. How is the social life at NYMC? What do people do in the few hours that they aren't studying? Do people actually go to NYC on a semi-regular basis? How insular is the med school class - and does it get a little socially incestuous? I like the school but am a little wary of being outside of a city.

Tulane has a much better social scene. Take my word for it, their median GPA/MCAT might be low but they have excellent teachers, an awesome social scene, and Baton Rouge is > than Valhalla.

Thanks for your feedback. Tulane is in New Orleans, not Baton Rouge (although there is a clinical site out there).

Tulane.

The pulmonologist who inspired me to be a doctor graduated from Tulane so I'm totally biased tho. 🙂

Tulane.

New Orleans is great. Even though I wanted to leave, I am still very happy ending up here and would turn down other locations for here. I'm not Tulane btw. 👍

The social life at NYMC is great. We have tests roughly every 3-4 wks so those wks in between where theres not much goin on but class and a little studying, a lot of people go out 2-3 times a wk, usually either to NYC or in White plains. Also during free time we have intramural sports---flag football in the fall, basketball in the winter and softball in the spring. I have participated in all 3 and they are A LOT of fun. I might be a bad example but I go to the city on average 2 times every 3 wks. Some weeks it will be once or twice, others, for example when we have a test coming up, I wont go at all. The class as a whole makes it out to the city on average once a month but there are definitely people (like myself) that go more often. You definitely don't feel like you are at all close to NYC but it is literally a 30 minute train ride from White Plains, and if you drive its also relatively quick on the order of 25-30 minutes depending on traffic. All told NYMC exceeded my expectations with regard to social life. One other thing; the community of students here is very close and that is a huge pro to attending NYMC in my opinion if that is something that you would like.

Thanks for the great feedback. I'm planning on giving the school a call on Monday before I make the final decision. In the mean time, I was wondering if you knew whether or not NYMC degrees in the future are going to have the name "Touro" on them in any way shape or form? Checked multiple sources and can't seem to get a straight answer.
