OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Any one else going to join the FB group?

When the moon is in the 7th House, and Jupiter aligns with Mars...

Sorry, I just wanted to quote some "Aquarius" lyrics on SDN. Seriously, my interview is on the 22nd. When I know of the outcome of the interview, I'll consider joining the group. Thanks for setting it up.

Haha no love then but sounds good, and to just one you're back in college so get in the groove lol.

Thanks for the advice.

I moved here at the age of 6 but english is my primary language now. I am non trad in a sense: started school at 19 but have been undergrad for 6 years.... kids, husband, and job don't allow for the fastest paced curriculum.

Pulled through high school as a pregnant teen and graduated as valedictorian. In college I've maintained a 3.78 gpa and managed to squeeze in time to do research in cell biology.

I just didn't think I'd have a shot since my mcat was going to be in sept that I never bothered with the application. Now I'm wondering if I should have just gone for it.

Like i said, OSU takes into case other things than just stats. If you wrote your personal statement to include what you just shared and got some good LOR's, you might have a shot at regular but a real good shot at bridge.

What are your stats for being OOS and what ties do you have?

I have solidly average stats. I am non-trad with experience living and working on a reservation and strong interest in Indian health and primary care. I thought OSU would be a stretch, with their preference for in-state, so I'm very happy with the interview offer. Wishing other out-of-staters the same luck.

Did anyone have an insanely long wait time on their AACOMAS app? I submitted mine mid-July and I just got the verification email today. Seriously...why would it take ~10 weeks? I'm quite frustrated that it happened to verify just AFTER the first round invites went out, too. Oh well, I probably wouldn't have gotten a first round interview anyway.

I have heard others state similar times. 🙁 I submitted mine first week of June, took 4 weeks.

I worked on mine from 5/01 to 5/18 and submitted 5/18. Being that early, i thought it wouldn't take long. I was wrong. Finally verified 6/13. Not all there fault though, just take a look at my MDApps for a play by play view.

Even though I was verified on 6/13, my application wasn't released until 6/28 to OSU. Sorry about about the lag time on yours and all. If I may ask though, what are your stats?

28 mcat (9v 10p 9b) and 4.0 gpa.

you should definitely hear from them next round, is OSU your first choice?

Thought I'd give you a reason to dislike AACOMAS even more... my MCAT is same as yours but my GPA is considerably less and I got a first round interview. So you should definitely be on the lookout for next round.

They obviously know each other. Maybe Whats Next is just saying he likes him enough to chat. What does beer and hot sauce have to do with OSU? Do they make you chug at the interview?

Yeah. It's a kind of IFF for SDN. Not to be confused with BFF because it's nothing like that at all. Yes, I'm pretty sure I know iatros and I'm just letting him know, that's all. Juvenile? Maybe. But, I'm always looking for ways to entertain myself on SDN.

The question is when does beer and hot sauce NOT have to do with anything in life? OK - Have I gone goofy on an otherwise serious thread? Sorry, I'll contain myself from here on out.

So do I or do I not have to chug beer and hot sauce at the interview? Guess I better start practicing just to be safe.

It's not that serious, just affects the rest of our life.

I'm not sure. But, those are skills that are always good to have in your hip pocket to bring out in a pinch.

So if I find I have a natural talent at it, and take down Joey Chestnut in the annual Belikin/Marie Sharp's Chug and Squirt, can I list it in the EC's?

All this beer and hot sauce chugging reminds me of the good ol days in my fraternity at swosu.... Not to say anything for the adcom members who watch this thread.

We gotta have some fun, as much torment as this application process has been we gotta have some laughs every once in a while.🙂😛😀

 Yes. It's good to show every now and then that not all of us pre-meds are automatons programmed to make good grades, score well on tests, and look down our noses at everyone else. Of course, grades and test scores are important and I do take my studies very seriously (for any adcom members reading this thread 😉).

Hey all of you prospective students, hope applications are going well!! Remember, for those of you anxiously awaiting, that they process applications in the order received, so just because you didn't get an invite for this round doesn't mean you won't get one at all. They interview all the way through March, so don't worry! I am a first year at OSU-COM, and I am from out of state, and I am also a DO/MBA student. If you guys have any questions, feel free to ask!! Good luck to everyone, I will try to swing by the interviews on the 21st and 22nd!🙂

I'll be there the morning of the 21st. Just look for the nervous guy whose trying to chillax with a bottle of hot sauce in one fist and a beer in the other haha.

You will be fine, just relax and be yourself! By the time you make it to the interview stage at OSU they are just wanting to know your personality, drive, and what you know about the DO field. You have made it through the hard part already. Enjoy the day, meet some new people, learn some new things, and mostly, have fun!😎

Sounds good, I was just joking earlier lol. I don't think I'll be nervous beyond belief or anything since I was in band and played solos for numerous crowds; by saying that, I've learned to control my nerves pretty well is what I mean. Right now I am just having a hard time focussing on school in the present instead of the future.

I was just wondering. For the secondary application questions, did you all write a lot? It seems like "Why do you wish to attend the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine?" is the only question I have anything to write about, and that will only be about one or two paragraphs.

I'm applying to this school OOS. I know their website says that you should go ahead and send the secondary, but is that only for for IS?

Also, has anyone from OOS been accepted yet? If so, what are your stats?

The first interviews are next week. Yes go ahead and send secondaries asap. I wrote about a page and answered the why OSU and also the last one about anything else (I forgot to put physician shadowing on Primary and wanted them to know I have shadowed several different physicians)

Does anyone know what kind of laptop OSU would recommend? Mine just fried and if I am going to buy one now, I might as well invest and get one that OSU uses or recommends.

So... any tips?

I think they have a list or something on the website

They rec. a Toshiba tablet through Richard's computers. Its almost as much as a decent used car....nice computer....excellent warranty.....I am not sure it is necessary. You will need a decent computer for Histo. I have the HP touchsmart tx2...got it off ebay for $600...great tablet. You do not need a tablet as they may tell you. Approx 15-20% of our class has a Mac....I have heard some complaints regarding compatability...but they are still using them. Many other folks have regular notebook PCs and are getting along just fine. The tablet is cool and portable....I find the touchscreen uber helpful for writing on virtual microscopy images and adding tidbits to ppt.

PS: The faculty and school do not use or rec. Vista....Several classmates, including myself, use it and have yet to have issues. I would rec. swapping to Window 7 when possible/available.

Nobelheart is correct. The will make many recommendations to you, but they are just that, recommendations. I am one of the 20% who use a real computer (Mac), and have no issues. For Histo, you use a program that is made for PC. If you are a Mac user, they give you a website to go to that gives you access to the same slides, just a little different format, and you have look a little more for the slides because they are in folders, rather than being in numerical order. However, I worked for Apple for over a year, so I can help with some tips when needed. For instance, there is a program called Cross-Over for Mac ($40 download) that allows you to run the majority of Windows-based programs on a Mac. I got it, downloaded the program for Histo, and works like a charm! That is the only class where a computer is vital. Don't get me wrong, I use mine in every class (PPTs, etc.) but you could very easily print out the presentations in hard copy. Don't get a computer you will be unhappy with just for one class. There are ways around everything.

As for the tablet feature, some love it, some never use it. I bought an external tablet pad for my Mac, and don't really use it at all. It is nice to be able to write on slides or lecture material occasionally, but for lecture, I just type in the notes section of the PPT, and for labeling images and stuff with the tablet, there are plenty of other students who have it, so if I need it, I get it from them or off OSUDO.

Sorry for the novel. Moral of the story is, get something that is going to fit your needs and your style, and something that you are going to be happy with for a while. If you don't like tablets or small screens, don't do it just because they say so, its not a must have.

hey!

So i sent my primary to a bunch of DO schools but at this point i want to decide ~4 schools to send my secondary too. I live in Dallas, TX and am deciding on schools based on a: quality/reputation of school, b: location of school (is it easily accessible, near a major airport), c: tuition, d: out of state friendly. So far i have received secondaries from the schools listed below. anyone have any recommendations on which ones i should choose to send secondaries to??

LECOM Bradenton

De Moines University

CCOM (Chicago)

PCOM (Philadelphia)

MSUCOM (Michigan)

Arizona Midwestern

UMNDJ

NYCOM

NOVA southeastern

ATSU-SOMA (Arizona)

ATSU-KCOM (Kirksville)

KCUMB

OSU

Thanks sooo much! any advice would be much appreciated!

Both atsu are private so out of state doesn't matter but tuition is high. OSU doesn't take many out of state but it meets all other requirements. I am not familiar enough with the other schools to say much.

Thanks for the computer advice. I use both macs and pcs but I like pc laptops because I tend to lean towards a custom distro of Linux that I like for most everything. I'll probably avoid the tablet but well see. My Hp lasted me 4 years an the capacitors for the charger finally went causing it to have massive power issues. Probably get another Hp notebook

Somebody told me a rumor originating from a current medical student that they will be increasing the class size by a good deal (around 15-20). Anybody else heard anything?

I was told not that much, as many students say the classrooms are already packed as is.

I'll ask at my interview to be sure, but yours is the day after mine so it wont make too much of a difference by then.

I am pretty sure the plan is to gradually increase the class by 3-4 per year untill they meet the 15-20 expansion. I believe the issue lyes within lack of space in the gross lab.

Class size is approved to a final total of 115. With that said it won't happen any time soon. The only way they can do that is to expand the anatomy lab, as well as 2nd year lecture halls. There's no room for that. The current class has close to 99 in it I think (with class, repeats, bridge, etc..).

Computers: Some people live and breathe OneNote, so they could'nt live without a quality tablet. Me? Not so much. It is REALLY nice to be able to have the option if you want it though. I went with the Toshiba laptop due to the insane 4 year warranty they gave us through Richards. Its completely replaceable, unless I lay it in the driveway and back my car over it. The Fujitsu is a higher end computer, that costs a little more, and has a shorter/weaker warranty. It has its followers as well. Richards gives incoming OSU students the ability to buy the computer from them and not pay for it until your financial aid comes in. So I got mine the July of 08 and didn't pay for it until mid - late august when my loans came in. The financial aid dept allots for computers in your first year loan package. There are a couple of 2nd years that use Macs and I don't know of any real problems. I run Vista and have no issues, EXCEPT for accessing Dr. Goljans online board reviews. They are encrypted by Pinion and you can't run them with Vista.

Other Schools: We can't really recommend other schools to you, because we aren't you. This is going to be your home/family for atleast 2 years. Go tour as many as you can, get a feel for the student body, and check out the faculty. Most of the schools you listed are great institutions in their own rights and you will have to judge how you fit in. OSU is harder to get into OOS, but I did it, as well as several others. OOS class size is usually around 12 - 15. Read some of my posts on this forum for our benefits and look at our pass rates on the USMLE. COMLEX rates have dropped recently (due more to student issues than school I think), but as far as passing the USMLE, we are still one of the top DO schools in the country. COMLEX pass rates are still at roughly 92%. I'd have to do some digging to find our USMLE rates.

Hope that helps some!

Did any of you guys send your letters via interfolio? I have all my letters stored with interfolio. I cant go back and askk the writers to re_send them. The statement below was part of the letter i recieved today. I need a quick response, please.

All letters of recommendation must be forwarded to the Office of Student Affairs by the individual writing them and should be on official letterhead

My letters were sent straight to OSU since this is the only DO school I applied to. If you want good and quick advice, call the school. Sarah and Lindsey are very helpful

just like the above poster said call osu sara, or lindsey both will tell you if what you have will work.

Does OSU require class attendance? I see that some med students are firm believers in attending only gross anatomy class, while other schools push the classroom lectures. Which side does OSU come down on?
