Summer Research Application and Acceptance Thread ( SPUR, SURF, SURP, SIP, AMGEN, LA etc.) 2019

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you!! I think like ~15 or so students from the UCSF SRTP program are under Amgen funding so they're in the Amgen Scholars program but technically everyone in the SRTP program does the same thing except the Amgen people get to go to the symposium in July? The administrator (Julia Clark) said once the cohort is finalized, they'll determine the source of funding for each student but rn I have no idea how they do it and which funding I'm under

Gotcha, that makes a lot of sense! I'm sure they'd want to have an accurate cohort before giving out the specifics. I actually was accepted to UCSF's SRTP too but was a bit shy to post about it. Thanks for the reply!

I applied to the Mayo in Florida and Glenda Mueller said the other day that they have already sent offers to 13/17 spots and I have no confidence so I didn't get it. Oh well time to find something else to do in the summer

I’m not sure whether to do the Northeastern REU or the UC Berkeley REU for biology. Northeastern gave me a lab placement, but UC Berkeley didn’t and they said they would after I commit. Does anyone know anything about either program? Their stipend/housing offer is the same so I don’t have to worry about that.

Hey just keep swimming. This won't make or break your application to MD/PhD programs or MD programs. Maybe you can complete some clinical or volunteer work this summer. That's just as important on an app

Oooh congrats! Are you thinking of committing?

Does anyone know if schools send out acceptances/rejections over the weekend or just on business days?

Thank you so much! I'm considering UCSF to be my top choice right now. I don't believe programs will send anything out on the weekends, and so I'm thinking of waiting until late Monday-early Tuesday to accept! Good luck to you too if you're considering accepting as well!

Congrats on your acceptance to UT Southwestern. Would you mind sending me a PM about your stats?:bookworm:

I’m thinking about it! It seems like a really cool program, especially for premeds given the shadowing opportunities and OR observation. I got the “as soon as possible” request too. Gonna milk that as long as possible lol

Yeah it does seem cool! It's just that I'm kind of like pre-MD/PhD and idk how clinical I want to be this summer. And yeah... I hope I hear back from my other programs before they get antsy haha

From what I've heard/read, its pretty clinically focused as opposed basic science oriented... have you gotten in elsewhere else that would be more focused on basic science yet?

Yeah... seems pretty clinical. Plus, the school I go to right now has like tons of opportunities to shadow neurosurgeons etc, so I'm not like that desperate for the clinical side. I have a couple offers from NIH labs and am waiting to hear back from a place I got an interview for last week. Idk I'm just not sure what to make of the program right now

Accepted to CSU REU Neuro lab and rejected from WUSTL BP ENDURE. Waiting on Michigan NURO, Rutgers SURP, NYU SURP (says April decisions), and Weill Cornell, but even if I get any, I'll probably stick with CSU, as it's a pretty cool lab and the stipend is by far the largest.

Anybody know if doing summer research at a uni can help with acceptance to it's med school?

It can definitely help especially if you have a recommendation letter from that lab professor! I did a medical internship at Duke this past summer and already secured an interview with them for med school! 🙂)

Just curious for the leadership alliance portal, under status, one of mine says “closed with no offer.” Is that the same as a rejection lol?

That sucks, hopefully the other ones get back to you with good news soon

Thank you! I’ve managed to get into an MSTP summer program and SURF at Cincinnati Children’s, so I’m pretty thankful! Would just be nice if the programs would send out rejections instead of basically ghosting us haha

When did you hear back from Cincinnati?

When did you hear back from Cincinnati?

It was before the deadline even but that was just because I actually spent the last two summers there for SURF and once you get in the first time, they essentially always let you keep coming back! One thing I will say, with the program that is good to know is that they actually are fine with you reaching out to possible mentors. I was interested in plastics so I emailed my resume to all the PIs in that department and one emailed back that she was interested in me joining her lab, so I emailed the director about it and then that’s how I ended up in my lab last summer!! I know most programs don’t like students to do that but in this case it was fine (maybe bc the program is so big and has like ~150 spots)

I just checked the website for NYU SURP and it says admissions notifications should come out late Feb or early March (probably the latter since it seems no one's heard back yet).

Sorry to hear, did you get an email from their program?
Yes, the program director emailed me an attached letter indicating that the committee viewed my application as very competitive, but there were not enough positions.

Just got an email about basically being waitlisted for Vanderbilt’s summer MSTP program for anyone still waiting on them. Email said they had given out enough spots to fill the program but are still waiting on a few students to decide :/

So basically they said they've already given out all the acceptances right?

Yes. This is directly what the email said: "Currently, we have given out enough acceptances to fill our summer program but are still waiting to hear back from a few students. If those students do not accept, we will have slots available and will need to make additional acceptances. At this point you are still under consideration for our program."

Hi friends! Just have a general question. I've been accepted into a solid SURF that I'm really excited about (yay!). Would it be rude of me to reach out to the others that haven't given me a decision yet and ask whether they could potentially expedite a decision so that I can make an informed decision on whether to take this particular SURF? I certainly don't want to come off as pushy (and I know I probably would, no matter how kindly I worded things) but at the same time I want to make sure that I pick the best opportunity available for me and not the first one that presents itself.

Thanks so much y'all!

I did that and they were receptive to it.

If you don’t mind sharing, which were you accepted to?

UT Southwestern! It's a really great program, but I still have 4 or 5 applications out there in the ether. I don't really know whether I'd be more inclined to pursue them than UTSW, but I'd rather have all the info and make a difficult decision if necessary than I would be to just take the offer without hearing back from the other programs.

I have spoken with a few of the coordinators via email. I think that you def wouldn't be the only/first applicant who has done so. I would reach out if I were you. Just keep it polite and don't use pushy language. Congrats!

Has anyone had to decide between two really great REU programs? How did you even do it? I'm so torn. I've already evaluated possibly every aspect of each and I'm still not sure which to choose.

Also consider if you’d prefer one over the other for Grad School, stipend amount, lab placement, impact of projects.

Did anyone else other than @Clayman9852 hear back from UC Berkeley AMGEN? Why do ad coms like to keep people waiting and roll out decisions like this????

Lol I'm also waiting on Berkeley... I don't want to accept one of my other offers until I hear back bc Berkeley was my top choice :/ I think I might email them today and ask because I have to respond to my other offers by Wednesday
