Summer Research Application and Acceptance Thread ( SPUR, SURF, SURP, SIP, AMGEN, LA etc.) 2019

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just received this:
"Unfortunately, the USAISR officials elected to pursue other candidates for the program this summer. Please note, should a candidate decline the opportunity, alternates may be contacted."

Is this just a rejection or am I waitlisted?

It's kinda like both lol. I got one of those too. On the chance that they reach out to you again, they dont want to have burned the bridge. They like keeping us in purgatory so that they make sure they fill all their spots. Good luck 🙂

I'm curious about everyone's opinion about having a LinkedIn account. Do you think admissions officials also may look at it when they want to find out more info about an applicant? Is it worthwhile to have?

For anyone that has gone through this process before, if I haven't heard from Mayo yet am I most likely rejected?
No, they admit people until late march.

Just got the official rejection from Harvard AMGEN. Yale BioMed/AMGEN comes out by the end of the day tomorrow. I called JHU AMGEN, UC Berkeley AMGEN, and Stanford SSRP-AMGEN about decision notification, so I'm just waiting for them to call me back. I'll let y'all know what's up.

Currently waiting on SREIP (Psychology at Columbia Princeton and Stanford) as well as Columbia public health program. Anybody get any news from any of these programs?

I applied directly to Princeton on their website for Bio and I havent heard back but I heard they make the decision by March 15th.

I called UC Berkeley Amgen too and they said that they hadn't send out acceptances yet, at least for the departments I am applying to.

Just officially got rejected from Hopkins SIP lmao 550 applicants for 5 spots, yikes

No matter one’s opinion on LinkedIn, the nice thing about it is that it is favored by Google search. So if one were to Google your name (a relatively easy thing to do when screening applicants), it is likely to be one of the first results. This, in turn, may push other results down (such as Facebook, Twitter, etc) which may be less desirable depending on how one uses those platforms.

In my personal experience, I haven’t found much utility from Linked In other than it is an additional place for my CV/Resume and is the first result should one google my name. Since it doesn’t require much upkeep beyond the first creation of the account, I would say its a no-brainer and one should sign up.

And they didn't say when they'd come out??? Idk what I'm going to do if it's not by the end of the week since another program's already given me a definite deadline for Friday to notify them. ugh

What department did you apply for? Also when did you call them? Gahh I have till the end of this week to accept or decline an offer. this is making me anxious.

I applied for synthetic biology / bioengineering! I called them this afternoon. and yah I feel I have until tomorrow to accept my other offers lolol

Rejected from Brown SR-EIP today. Lol whoohoo for being out of limbo!!

Lol yeah they said they're waiting on faculty to finish reviewing apps so I don't think they know either

...well that's a major yikes. Is Berkeley Amgen not processed centrally? I thought the Amgen programs were mostly like central system accepts the student, then you're placed within your preferred department(s).

Also if anyone applied to NYU SURP (I actually forgot I did oops), all admissions notifications will be sent out by Friday morning.

Is anyone else waiting on Canary CREST? I had an interview two weeks back and was told they would release decisions on that Friday, but just heard back from the director that they still are processing applications.

Hmm this is just a guess but maybe they have a central screening process and then they send some of the apps to a few faculty within that department to help them decide (but the faculty don't necessarily "pick" you for their lab)?

Did anyone hear back from NYU chemical biology, SREIP University of Chicago or SROP?

just accepted pitt's srop in cellular and molecular pathology, and I pulled all my other apps, so that's all for me! Good luck everyone, wishing you all the best! If anyone knows anything ab the program (the good, the bad, etc) please lmk!

Yes, the program director emailed me an attached letter indicating that the committee viewed my application as very competitive, but there were not enough positions.
What department/field did you apply to for the UCB Amgen?

Is Brown SREIP still accepting? Still havent heard anything at all from them..

dude idk LOL I'm still deciding between Northwestern and UCSF tbh... I'll just wait till the last minute tomorrow and decide l o l

How bout you?

From what UCB told you about later admissions decisions, I think I'm going to give it till tomorrow afternoon-ish too and then accept UCSF's offer! I was pumped about the program, just wanted to wait it out a bit.

Is it bad news if we haven't heard anything from our SR-EIP schools?

I am in the same spot. I think it depends on what field we applied to. I've heard psych typically takes a bit which is why I'm trying my best to be patient. I am abroad so that's helping.
I still haven't heard anything from any of my 3 SR-EIP schools yet 🙁

Did Stanford ssrp and jhu amgen give a date to expect admissions or rejection notifications?

I don’t believe so... JHU Amgen should be coming out beginning of March tho, so probs by the end of the week

Has anybody gone to University of Nebraska's-Lincoln Summer Research Program?

Does anyone have a specific day when yale biomed amgen releases decisions? I heard today but I'm not too sure.

I’m not sure whether to do the Northeastern REU or the UC Berkeley REU for biology. Northeastern gave me a lab placement, but UC Berkeley didn’t and they said they would after I commit. Does anyone know anything about either program? Their stipend/housing offer is the same so I don’t have to worry about that.
I got into Northeastern too! Did you decide if you are going there or to UC Berkely?
