Summer Research Application and Acceptance Thread ( SPUR, SURF, SURP, SIP, AMGEN, LA etc.) 2019

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
UT Southwestern! It's a really great program, but I still have 4 or 5 applications out there in the ether. I don't really know whether I'd be more inclined to pursue them than UTSW, but I'd rather have all the info and make a difficult decision if necessary than I would be to just take the offer without hearing back from the other programs.
Hey, congrats on the UTSW offer! When did you get the email from them?

Lol I'm also waiting on Berkeley... I don't want to accept one of my other offers until I hear back bc Berkeley was my top choice :/ I think I might email them today and ask because I have to respond to my other offers by Wednesday
Yeah I'm curious about what they say. I'm in the same boat. I have a few offers already but I really want to know Berkeley's decision.

What are the chances ad coms release results after the normal workday is over? I've been refreshing my email for a decision I was told would come today since 8:30 am. Do I just give up after 5 pm?

You could always call them to ask when they plan to release them?

When I interviewed with the program, the director said we should all get results by today. So like, do I hold out hope or do I assume they needed more time to sift through the applicants? I just don't really want to bother her since I know interviews only finished on Friday afternoon, so I'd understand if they needed more time. On the other hand, I have other programs that have been waiting on me and I feel really bad

If they told you they’d be out today I don’t think they’d be too upset if you touched base with them. I’m thinking about doing that with Mayo if I get out of lab in time.

Yeah I guess that's fair. I think I'll wait until like... 6 pm and see if anything comes in my inbox. Then I'll blast 'em with an email or maybe call.

Ya that makes sense!

Speaking of which, if anyone also waiting for Mayo MN calls before 5:00 CST would they be able to update the thread on what happens? I’m in ochem lab until then.

What program are you referring to?

Yeah I'm curious about what they say. I'm in the same boat. I have a few offers already but I really want to know Berkeley's decision.
I second this^, I wonder if they've given out the first wave of decisions and are waiting to hear back before sending any other offers?

Hey, congrats on the UTSW offer! When did you get the email from them?
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. Got the email early Sunday morning, immediately called my parents nearly crying from happiness haha
Has anyone heard anything from Mount Sinai SURP?
I have not heard back from them either. If I had to, I'd guess it'll be by the end of this week or next, given that their website estimates roughly March 1. It seems to be that the programs that give estimates of when they'll get back to you are occasionally off by a week or so.

What did your rejection email say?

“Thank you for your recent application to the Dartmouth MPUS Fellowship for the summer of 2019. We regret to inform you that following intense screening of more than 75 applications, we will not be able to offer you a slot in our program this summer. Mainly due to financial constraints, we are only able to offer spots to 5 Fellows this summer.

Please do not interpret this decision as a reflection of your academic prowess or ability to be competitive for MD-PhD programs in the future. This decision was very hard for us to make and to be honest, given your credentials and determination, expect that you will do very well as an MD-PhD applicant in the future. Indeed, we hope to see you interviewing at Dartmouth’s MD-PhD program!

Thank you again for allowing us the honor of reading your application/if you have any further questions feel free to reach out!

Wishing you the very best,

Alex Thorngren, MS, EdD

Same thing for you?

I emailed Columbia Amgen a week ago inquiring about the status of my application, but I’ve heard nothing back so far.

Yup! Haha. They had a nice rejection though, didn’t make me feel like trash.

It's looking like another summer full of me and my tiramisu. Sad but how sad can I really be when I get to eat the most decadent dessert known to humankind?
Aw don’t be so down!

Which ones are you still waiting from?

Oh yeah and I called Mayo just after lab with no answer so we’re still in limbo 🙁

@misstiramisu hey, I was in your boat this time last spring. But, towards the end of my spring break, I got my only acceptance! Anything can happen-- and, you could STILL be eating the delightfully delicious coffee-flavored dessert we all love and cherish.

That said, don't worry if you don't get into these. One of my professors was telling me about how she has had multiple students who got rejected from every summer program they applied to that ended up going on to be highly successful MD/PhDs (to say nothing of the far more who go on to MD programs). Especially if you happen to be a rising junior (lots of these programs have a bias in favor of rising seniors), missing out on a SURF isn't a big problem. Just have to adjust plans a bit.

Does anyone know if we can re use the same statement if we re apply lmao

Does anyone know if we can re use the same statement if we re apply lmao
Can and should are two very different things. Because the adcoms don't know you directly, the statement is the absolute best way you have of differentiating yourself in an applicant pool, particularly given that there are likely people in the pool whose grades, activities, etc mirror or exceed yours. What I'm trying to say is that if you didn't get into a particular program this cycle, there's a good chance that your statement at the very least has room for improvement. Now, other parts of the app may be holding you back, but obviously your statement isn't doing anything to offset them. If that's the case, then you want to strengthen your statement for next time for sure. If you did get into the program or programs you wanted, that's great! However, by the time you reapply next year, hopefully you will have had plenty more experiences associated with research and clinical shadowing/volunteering that you'll want to talk about because they're relevant to who you are at that point. A static statement, to me, would imply a static individual. And I would not advise you to be a static individual.

Now, this is all a pre-med's advice to another pre-med, so take it with a grain of salt. However, I will say that I've now been accepted to SURF type programs for back-to-back summers, so I do have a teensy bit of experience in these apps. I can't crawl into the adcoms' heads, but I can tell you that I don't think that a static statement does you any favors, no matter how well you did with it the first time. The absolute best case scenario is that you have the same outcomes, unless some other part of your app drastically improves. Again, that's just me talking, but I don't think I'm too terribly far from the truth here.

I applied to Pitt's SURF at the early deadline and haven't heard back from them yet. Do you guys think it may be worth emailing them and asking when I might hear back?

Yes.
I actually once was told by program director that if you come from small institution, they dont count this as rigorous research experience.

I hope not every institution feels the same way.
Personally, with the recent traffic rule changes, i feel like doing research and spending time at an institution for a few months might play a larger - if still minor - factor. Anyone else have thoughts?

I also applied to Pitt SURF and have not heard anything. Do you know anyone who got acceptance?

Hello! I applied to CSHL and Rockefeller SURF. Has anyone heard anything from those institutions???

For anyone that has gone through this process before, if I haven't heard from Mayo yet am I most likely rejected?

Know as a fact that Brown and some other Leadership Alliance sites have sent acceptances.

Rejected from Duke AMGEN and Harvard DBMI Summer Institute of Biomedical Informatics (3/4).

I saw someone got accepted earlier on in the thread, but I don't know of anyone else

hey guys! I got accepted to pitt surf on 2/26. the deadline to accept my offer is tomorrow (I'll be doing so then), so I imagine that they will be releasing more offers after that date. Best of luck, and keep you're head up. you got this! feel free to pm me if you have questions🙂

Hi all!

I was accepted into Yale's SR-EIP on 2/28. Waiting to hear back from Brown and Columbia.

Oh yeah and I called Mayo just after lab with no answer so we’re still in limbo 🙁

Can they just send me my rejection in the portal already so they can squash out the suspense and little hope left :diebanana:
