It has come down to these two schools and I was hoping I could get some opinions about SUNY Buffalo and Temple.
For me:
Temple:
Pros:
+ loved the atmosphere; the students I interacted with seemed to be genuinely happy and excited to be there
+ emphasis on collaboration (did not get any cut throat competition vibe)
+ shiny new facility 😀
+ I love Philadelphia (though I realize the location of the school is not the safest)
+ Seems like clinical years will be very eye-opening, especially because of the patient population
+ Temple students have a pretty good reputation of being excellent clinicians after graduation
Cons:
- Very very expensive
- safety concern (as stated above) [this is not as big of a concern]
SUNY Buffalo:
Pros:
+ In state tuition
+ school seems to emphasize student collaboration
+ the dean and professors seemed genuinely interested in helping students to succeed
+ only medical school in that area
+ new facilities opening in a few years (though my class will not be able to take advantage of this since the new buildings are planned to open after 2017)
Cons:
- I prefer a bigger city than Buffalo and am hoping to do residency out of the upstate NY area
- The students - though they seemed nice - seemed to be there because UB was the only school they got into and did not seem as enthusiastic
- mediocre facilities
Basically, my problem comes down to my heart loving Temple but my wallet preferring SUNY.
Also, I'm not sure how much the medical school I graduate from factors into residency placement, but I have heard from some hospitals that school reputation does come into play and that if you come from a school that they have not heard of they will skim over your application. I know that according to the US News rankings, UB and Temple are about the same...
