Touro - Nevada (TUNCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got an email that I was waitlisted,it does not mention high or medium waitlist unlike last year.Anybody know what the chances are of being accepted from waitlist at this time of the cycle ?.Any of you guys accepted from waitlist recently ?

Anyone interviewing here on 2/21? Also I'm super nervous about the interview since this is my first one. Any advice on how to prepare and what kind of questions I should expect?

I'm going off what I've researched on my own, so someone correct me if I'm wrong. My understanding is that the core rotations take place at valley hospital.

And yes there are only two med schools in the state of nevada. Tuncom which is 15ish miles from the strip in henderson and unlv-reno which is in reno.

Hi I was wondering how long of a time frame you were given to decide whether you were going to go to TUN after you were admitted?

You get two weeks from the date on the letter. I have heard that they will give extensions if you have a good reason.

Well I was accepted last week and it came down to Touro NV and KCOM. Today I decided not to pay the deposit to KCOM and have committed to Touro. It was really hard to turn down the original DO school, but I think Touro is a better fit for me. Here's my reasons why for anyone thinking about this school:

-I really like that I will probably be able to stay in Las Vegas for years 3/4.
-I really like the area, especially its proximity to California since I am from CA.
-Very impressive matches at CA residencies, this probably indicates the school is doing something right.
-I was very impressed by the students that I met, they all seemed really cool and very happy, even excited, about their education. I definitely got a good feeling about this school.
-Seems to be a lot of opportunity in this area. Only one other med school, and the state is in desperate need of physicians.

The only con I can really think of is that it's a warehouse. Oh, and that they give us PCs instead of Macs. I'm stoked to start school!

Interviewed today and I felt that tun com invests a great deal in their students

I agree! Everyone was very warm and welcoming. I love the energy. Don't like the whole pic requirement though but oh well hahaha!!!

i was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on TUNCOM vs SOMA? advantages and disadvantages, pros and cons. thanks =)

See my post above for pros and cons of TUNCOM. I was also accepted to SOMA, but am most likely not going to matriculate for the following reasons:

-I don't like the idea of leaving after the first year.
-Potentially not being able to do rotations at teaching hospitals, depending on which CHC you get
-No research opportunities.

Other than that, I did really like SOMA and I think it's a great school, but it just isn't for me. The presentation-based curriculum seems really cool, professors and students seemed very knowledgeable and caring.

Hmm, def interesting points you made earlier. for me, i'm not entirely sure about the area. im from socal too and the residencies ARE impressive, which is the one main draw for me because im really wondering what it is theyre doing right lol

are there a lot of research opportunities at TUNCOM? and for me, i kind of like that i'd get to leave haha. i got the DC site so im a little excited.

I heard the area, Henderson, is pretty good. One of my buddies from hs moved out to vegas/unlv for college and he said that henderson is the "suburbs" of the vegas area. I'm sure the area has it's pros and cons, but for the most part I've been told it's pretty safe. Also, Iknow there's a pretty big out-doors scene, red rock, so I'm pretty stoked for that.

Research? I can't speak for it but seems like there's decent funding going on at tuncom. Check out their research section on their main website. Here are my biggest draws for having tuncom as a top 3 pick for me 3 (out of both do/md programs):
-med school/residency is going to suck the youth out of you. Why not enjoy it somewhere fun.
- limited competition in an area of need. Only one other med school in nevada. I think unlv-reno takes about 54 students a year? On top of that nevada as a state has one of the lowest physician/patient ratios. Think about the potential bad-ass letters of rec you'll be able to get when it comes time for applying to residencies.
- google up tunlive and look for their residency match lists. You can find data from the very first graduating class to the most recent. There's an insane level of growth in their residency matches. Granted, residency match lists tell a very limited picture of what's going on, but I'm impressed and convinced I wanna b apart of it.
- there's a lot more reasons I ranked this school so high, but I'm on a smart phone and getting annoyed with typing. (I spend all day at work staring at a computer screen). Anyways gl!

All good points and reasons that contributed to my choosing TUN. I agree, I know it's not the best idea to choose a school based on the matchlist, but as someone who wants to do residency in CA, it's hard to ignore.

BTW, where da facebook group at? I would make it, but it asks you to add friends and I don't have any fb friends who are going to touro nv.

Good question. There was another thread about this, but I don't see their fb link.

Only five days since interviewing... Time is moving too slowly!

I just interviewed here this past week and was just curious, does anyone know what the grading policy here is? Honors/Pass/Fail or Graded like A/B/C?

Just curious. I know that everyone is ranked regardless in the end.

Grades go by percentage. 70% and up is passing, 69% and below is failing. GPA is calculated from your percentages in each class.

Really? They told us during the interview that it was A B C D and after every block they would post your ranking..

I would also be interested in confirmation about where the core rotations take place.

Grades and gpa are calculated by percentages (ie. a 91% has more grade points than an 90%). Ranks are released at the end of each semester, not block

Just realized I don't remember seeing any patient simulators on my tour. Do they have any?

Also, was anyone super impressed by the anatomy lab? I think it was by far the nicest/freshest-smelling one I've seen.

No patient simulators, but second years do exams on real "patient" actors. Everything from rectal to breast exams. Good practice for clerkships so you aren't thrown to the wolves on an actual patient in clinic lol

I agree the anatomy lab was pretty cool. I didn't get a headache from the formaldehyde fumes. Two thumbs for the ventilation and design of the anatomy lab

I would also be interested in confirmation about where the core rotations take place.

I called the Admissions dept and I have some sort of confirmation:

Core rotations take place at multiple hospitals in the southern Nevada region and last for about a month long each. The location/hospital that you will be doing your rotations at will vary depending on your class because the rotation sites are not set in stone. They change depending on the agreement between TUNCOM and the hospital.

Basically: any hospital in the Southern Nevada region that has a partnership with TUNCOM may be fair game for rotations.

Ah well at any rate we'll likely be some of the only med students around! Pretty cool

Also, I've decided to attend TUNCOM! woohoo!

Hey guys!

I'm interviewing on Thursday (2/21). Anybody have any idea about what the situation is regarding acceptances still leftover, waitlists, and what not?

This is my first interview, I'm getting pretty nervous and starting to freakout.... (on top of that when I take my flight back and get to school at 10 AM, I have to take 2 midterms!)

I'm on the same boat as you, what time are you interviewing? I have the 12:45PM session.

I interviewed on Feb 4...and they told us that the class is 80% full, so after Feb interviews, it's pretty much interviewing for the waitlist.

Did anyone send a letter of interest/thank you letter since interviewing? I'm really nervous since my first interview for this cycle was with Touro 2 weeks ago.:scared:

Yah, I sent a thank you to both doctors I interviewed with. One responded and one didn't. I interviewed 12/12 and got in 12/24. If I remember correctly, they told us we would find out by the new year if we got in or not.

Thanks HRoss! It's been roughly two weeks since I was interviewed. One of the two interviewers didn't give off a very positive vibe after the interview was over that's why I was contemplating on sending one to both of them.

Could you give me some tips on how to write one? 👍

I sent e-mails to both of my interviews and one responded and one didn't. I was accepted. I would just say something along the lines of thanking them for taking the time to interview you. Maybe talk about what you liked about the program. Just a brief thank you note.

Also interviewing on Thursday. Morning session 7:45am. If 80% of the class is full, that leaves a very encouraging 20% empty haha. Oh well. It will be my first 2-1 interview. Should be interesting. I've read contrasting things on here that they really grind out the 20 min and then others where the 20 min were fine and the interviewers were nice. Luck of the draw, be ready for anything I guess?

Yah, be ready for anything. My interviewers were great but others my same day weren't as lucky. If the numbers you posted are correct, 20% leaves 27 seats roughly available, not bad odds in my opinion.

In regards to writing a letter, I agree with Mattinthehat250, keep it short. Maybe remind them of who you were by bringing up something you talked about in the interview. Good luck!

It seems like this school was maybe a little behind in the cycle compared to other schools. I didn't get my secondary from TUN until like two months after all the other schools. Maybe that means you still have a decent shot if interviewing soon. Everyone that's interviewing soon, let us know how it went and how you liked the school!

Good luck to those of you interviewing soon!

I changed my March 6th interview to tomorrow afternoon. Figured the 2 weeks would make a difference. See you all there!

To those who interviewed on 2/4 do you guys remember when they will be sending out decisions? Is it this week or next week?
