Touro - Nevada (TUNCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have a few questions regarding the secondary if someone can help me out...

How did you calculate GPA's for the schools you attended? Did you use grade replacement like AACOMAS?

Under "Responsibilities" for volunteer experiences and work experiences, were your answers detailed? or a simple list?

The only section that said you may use a separate sheet if needed (that I noticed, at least) was the work experience section.

Thanks!

EDIT: Admissions said you can attach your resume/CV for the work and volunteer section.

I really hate this 2ndary... Couldn't they get the same exact answers from the AACOMA app?😡

I don't understand either... maybe to test your persistence? 😕 they aren't the only school asking for redundant information

Finally got the secondary.

Does any one know where I can find the school specific GPA's AACOMAS calculated? (for each University you attended). I remember seeing these before I submitted my application but after it was verified they seemed to have disappeared.

Can't submit online payment.. Website doesn't work. Anyone have a solution?

I don't have any health related work experience, but I have a lot of clinical volunteer experience and other work experience. The secondary just wants to know about health related employment, which I don't have any. I am a bit concerned that leaving this section blank would look really bad. Thoughts??

Why worry about it? It's not like you have a choice.

Also having this problem. 😕

I've been having this same problem in trying to pay for my TUCOM supplemental app. fee. TUNCOM is using the same online pay system.

I keep getting this message: "The authentication process failed or the page is not accessible to you at this moment. Please contact your site administrator."

Anyways, I emailed admissions at TUCOM and they said they're aware of the problem and the IT department is working on fixing it. They said to keep trying. If not, you have the option of physically mailing in your application with a check.

this is what I did

Unfortunately the tour didn't let me take any pictures 🙁 . I'll tell you what I can.

The area isn't bad, looks like mostly new development, although there are quite a few car dealerships near the school. The exterior may shock some people that are not from the Southwest, but it basically looks like a lot of the larger clinics and smaller hospitals in my hometown, but I can see why people can think it is boxy and warehouse looking, The building is really nice inside, everything is completely up to date. Albeit it kind of feels like a high school, especially on the second floor near the OT/PT area.

The DO area is basically 2 lecture halls on the first floor (maybe more I'm not sure) and a lounge area, and then down the hall is the OMM and Anatomy labs. All lectures are recorded and put online. A little bit down the hall from that are the patient exam rooms. For the standardized patients they use acting/drama majors from UNLV and sometimes your professors. The exam rooms have 2 cameras and you can watch your performance afterwards.

The library is almost entirely digital. The gym is a good size, and has an attached basketball court. They say that "most" professors are there full time from 8-5 should you have any questions, they should be in their office. The building is open 6am - 2am everyday with 24hr security.

Oh and I also asked them a little about the interviews. They said they have already started sending out invites, but nobody on SDN has said they have gotten one yet so I guess take that with a grain of salt. Should you get an interview, it is with 2 faculty for 20min.

I called this school to fix some LOR issues. Interviews are imminent.

I just started MS1 here less than 10 days ago so I'll chime in...
From the outside, the TUN campus is not remarkable by any means. It is a single building in a quiet business area and most people probably wouldn't even notice it unless they were looking for it specifically.

Vegas is hot. 110F hot. No want go outside hot. No care see pretty building hot. I have come to appreciate the layout and practical design of the campus. Pretty much everything I need and everywhere I have to be as an MS1 is within 30 seconds of walking. The anatomy lab is clean with very good air exchange and being able to play basketball during study breaks is definitely on the pros side of the list. Having recorded lectures and a non-mandatory attendance is pretty nice too. 🙂

Thanks for chiming in! I know you've just started; but could you comment at all on the types and quality of clinical rotation sites? I've not found anything online about the actual sites available. But if anyone else did, please feel free to direct me to a link. 🙂

Thanks and GL to all applying this season.

How are the pass rates for the comlex?

How is your experience so far with your professors and classes?

Congrats! was it an email?

"August 20, 2012

Dear Applicant:

Thank you for applying to Touro University Nevada (TUN) Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program. The Admissions Committee has reviewed your application and would like to invite you to interview for the Class of 2017...."

Stats? When were you complete?

i was complete ages ago...uh..july 19th.

i sent in my letters of rec a little late because I simply forgot to send them lol. I sent them around last week. They actually told me on the phone "yeah we'll be sending you an invite next week" which I found very unusual.

here is my info.

I never got a complete email either, but this is what I got:

"Your application is currently undergoing processing. During processing, we will be reviewing your application for all documentation, including letters of recommendation. If you are missing any items, you will be notified via email. Once your file has been processed and reviewed, you will be contacted via email in regards to whether or not you have been selected for an interview."

So does this mean that if you don't get any email about missing items, your file is complete? This email is the last I heard from Touro-Nevada. I got it after submitting the secondary.

Damn. I never received a complete email... Is that bad?

When did you submit the secondary? Te secondary says 3-5 days for a complete email. If its been longer than that I'd call or email. They always get back to me really quick when I use email.

I'd take that as a complete email..or a "if you don't hear from us assume you're complete" email

Guys I got that same email but I just got an email today saying I'm complete. It also says I need to call to get my letters verified if I sent them electronically before I am eligible for an II.

I can't really comment on the rotation sites as I happened to skip that day of orientation when they talked about clinical education lol(i really hate sitting in class). However, I do know that there are only two med schools in NV so if you are willing to do the legwork you can rotate pretty much anywhere that will take you(if you don't like the school rotation sites). This is one of the main reasons I applied to Touro NV.

Not sure about the COMLEX pass rates but im sure a phone call to the school could answer that question.

So far classes have been pretty easy and the professors have been open, friendly, and available. I have never been a traditional lecture learner so I just pretty much just read the book and lecture slides from home. People tell me that reading the book is overkill but thats how I learn best. I only go to campus when I have labs or group projects.

Oh yea, it seems like there is a lot of emphasis placed on teamwork so expect a lot of group assignments and such..this is actually a good thing because you get to meet the classmates you might never get to talk to otherwise.. Class size is roughly 130.

Overall, I am impressed with Touro NV. It's a small school with a tight-knit community and chill faculty. Also, the school seems like it will bend over backwards to accomadate for its students. Suggestions, complaints, etc are taken seriously.

I've heard and read some negative things about Touro in general, but they don't seem to apply to Touro NV. Hopefully, I can say the same thing 4 years from now.👍

Yup, that's definitely the impression I get. I hear a lot of complains from Touro-CA students but they often finish their statements with "but I hear that's not an issue at Nevada..."

Of course that's just anecdotes, but still -- Touro Nevada sounds like a good school.

2 weeks and I FINALLY received the secondary today.

Hi Everyone. I am new to this threat. Non-traditional applicant. I submitted my Secondary on August 14th and received an invitation to interview on August 20th. My interview is scheduled for September 21th. I am really looking forward to it!

mind sharing your MCAT/GPA?

Absolutely- I really agree with the philosophy of DO. Some of the best Dr.'s I've met have been DO. I am really interested in a whole person approach and many of the medical schools I've looked at didn't align well with my personal goals. In any case, I applied to both MD and DO. Although I re-took the MCAT in August and am waiting for my scores to "complete" my MD applications. I did really poorly on one section and would have been auto-rejected by many MD schools.

Not all applicants apply to DO as a "back-up." Some people genuinely prefer the osteopathic model over the allopathic model.

Just called the admissions commitee today to see if my letters had been received and they also said I had an interview invite on the way. They also said they are pretty backed up with apps(who isn't?) so I may not get the email until Tuesday of next week...

i have called to check if they have my letters or not and they just tell me that the letters are in some sort of a system where they can't just go and check if they have it or not until they get to my file and upload them. I thought this was a bit weird.

Yeah this was similar to my phone call.

"I was wondering if you could tell me if you've received my letters?"

"Has it been 4-6 weeks?"

"well, it's been 4 weeks"

"call back after 6"

Kinda pissed me off. I wasn't even asking about interviews -- I was simply curious about my letters because I've received a grand total of 1 email from this school and have no way of checking my status online.

M1 here. Be patient. This was the last secondary I received from any school, but it's worth it.

Expect a month delay in the admissions process compared to other schools.

My experience has been awesome. I'm literally in love with my class, they have chosen some amazing people.

Just got an email for an interview invite! Fri Sept 21st. I received a complete e-mail on 8/8.
