TUCOM-NV Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I interviewed last week too, on the 15th... I'm a little nervous, but more nervous about Touro-Ca where I interviewed on the 14th... I second the question about an interviewer laughing at you... the interviewers at AT Still Mesa laughed and laughed at me (and I don't generally think I'm funny), totally freaked me out...

For those of you have yet to interview be prepared for this: They want you to have 50 hours of science, they don't post it anywhere but they might mention it the day of your interview. I have 49 hours and one of my interviewers made the BIGGEST deal out of my not having 50. It's almost like 50 hours of science is an un-published requirement... that's tough for those of us with social science majors and who attended a liberal arts university... eeek!

Why more nervous about TouroCA? Did you like TouroCA more than TouroNV? I'm interviewing at TouroCA next month but am planning cancel the interview if I get accepted to TouroNV.

Wow...it's bad enough being nervous without having the interviewers laughing like crazy😱 I was so nervous during my first interview (at another school). The Touro-CA interview sounds scary. Haven't been in a group-style interview yet.

I love TOURO CA way more than Touro NV. I like the campus better, the anatomy program better (you work on 60+ cadavers as opposed to 25 at NV, plus the NV room STUNK SO BAD, and the CA room only had a small smell of Formaldehyde, similar to what you smelled if you dissected a cat in high school). I also think that CA is more forthright with applicants than Touro NV, and I think how a school treats applicants is very indicative of how they treat students. Touro NV is very, very small. It's one building, that feels sort of like an old church or office, it doesn't feel very academic to me. Touro CA certainly feels more academic. The library at Touro CA seems better equipped. I'm not a huge fan of the vegas/henderson area, but that's just personal preference. Also, the professors at Touro CA are dedicated faculty meaning that they only teach at Touro CA they don't practice on the side. Touro NV almost all of the faculty practice on the side, even the dean. The day I had my interview the Dean couldn't meet with us b/c he was at his practice seeing patients. It makes me question the caliber of teacher, usually the more qualified a teacher is the more they earn, and I would say if almost all of the faculty at Touro NV are practicing they aren't earning enough to just be teachers, yet tuition at Touro NV is as high as it is at TOURO CA so where exactly are the tuition dollars going? I also think that having to manage a practice takes away from being available to students for questions and help if need be. Those are my opinions, but my opinion is what helped me decide Touro CA is a better fit for me.

--Just heard back from Touro NV and I'm wait listed... looking at this as a rejection because Touro NV wait lists 180 people for a class of 108... Roger said in 13 years of doing this the most people he's ever seen move off the wait list is 50, and last year they moved far fewer than that off of the wait list, chances of getting in off the wait list at this school seem very slim.

That was really helpful. Thanks a lot. Also, did you call TouroNV or did they email you? Waiting for my result...

In order to keep there licenses all doctors have to see some patients. I would think that learning from doctors that still practice and are involved in the field would be better than those no longer participating. I would bet that the Touro-CA staff mostly still practice as well though 🙂

I was in Vegas last night for a few hours, so I stopped by to visit the 'campus'... unimpressive, to say the least. I'm looking forward to actually visiting next week, so hopefully they'll do a little better job of selling it, but sheesh... one building in a business park? Disappointing.

I agree with the under-whelming impression of the facilities at NV based on what i saw from the website. I know everyone says it's the education and not the appearance of the medical school we're going for here... but still, i would hope for a more inspiring campus to study at for the four years i'll be spending with them.

see you next monday!

You will indeed. I'm kind of excited about this.

For any other 10/5 interviewees: I'm looking at staying at a hotel on the strip the night before (because there are rooms *way* cheaper than the ones TUNV suggests) and driving down to Henderson in the morning. If anyone's planning on doing the same thing but has no car, feel free to drop me a line if you want a ride- it's not exactly a long drive, but I feel like it's far enough away that a cab could start getting a little pricey.

You only spend 2 years of medschool on campus. And most of that is in lecture halls and studying. Years 3 and 4 are doing clinical rotations off campus at hospitals, clinics, etc.

I wonder how complete this is. TUCOM-NV graduates arouns 130 students, only 55 residency spots are listed. I know that each residency spot takes multiple people usually but I wonder how many grads got into a residency on their first try.

I graduated class of 09, and our class only had ~97 people. I also know there are some that are missing from that last. (Ie, Valley MC in Vegas had 3 of the 4 FP spots filled by TUNV 09 grads, but it only lists that there was 1 spot filled by us). We also had a few students who opted to spend a year doing research, who aren't listed either.

Got an invitation for an interview yesterday!! Tried calling them today to schedule it, but no one is picking up. Are they closed on Fridays? Does anyone know how far out they are booked for the interviews?

They close at 3pm pacific time on Fridays to observe the sabbath. Its a jewish institution.

how much time are you giving yourself to get there? I'm not sure what the traffic is like there. I'm at Mandalay bay.

Rent a car. Cab fare 1 way is probably ~$45-50 (with tip, if you aren't on the far end of the strip).

And I see lots of people discounting the building. Yes, it is totally uninspiring, however it fits the location well. In vegas, you have weather extremes: very very hot, and pretty icey cold (yeah, I'm from CA, so it is cold to me!). Having everything in 1 building is very convenient. No having to deal with 117 degree heat to go in between classes, or to run to the admin or to see a teacher. It also makes things easier. Need to run to the comp lab to print out the lecture? Well, in your 10 minute break between lectures, you can do that and still get a restroom break in. And the library is very small and non-traditional...but most/all of the textbooks are available online, anywhere. So you can sit in bed at home, and access journal articles and all kinds of full textbooks. Not bad really. And most people end up not studying at school anyways. A lot of people end up having home offices, studying at coffee shops, or friends places. Plus, you are already spending so many hours at school, getting a change of scenery when you study is probably best for your mental health (kidding...kind of).

I had plenty of good experiences at TUNV. If anyone has any specific questions, PM me...and be patient, I'm an intern. 😛

Well, one would assume (and Google traffic confirms) that Monday mornings aren't too bad in Vegas, traffic-wise. Took me about 15-20 minutes from Touro to the Strip when I was there this weekend. They say the day starts at 8:30, so I'm assuming get there by 8:00-8:15, so leave by 7:30-7:45.

Thanks for the insight, USCGal. It's good to hear that they at least take advantage of the benefits of the building, and that the students tend to branch out a little.

Haha, you misunderstand. I quickly wanted to update my sdn buddies before running around and calling everyone I know. I am definitely excited. I have been writing my name with "Dr." in front of it all morning.

Very cute. haha

Declining my acceptance here and California. Touro's just not doing it for me. Goodluck everyone.

I also got into NSU which I liked a lot better then either Touro schools. Nevada is a single building (like a giant COSTCO) and they don't have any cafeteria on site. But, you can drive quite easily to the areas around there. I didn't like TOURO-CA at all. The interviewers didn't seem like they wanted to be there (one actually left early), the questions they asked were ridiculous and had obvious answers that didn't let them know us any better (ie. if you caught a student cheating what would you do?), the campus buildings are old (they don't even paint the buildings), and there is also no cafeteria on site and you can't really drive anywhere. Plus the area is pretty grungy (next to a shipyard and abondoned buildings). Just googlemaps the place and I think you will get an idea.

Not hating on anyone going there but it just doesn't seem like a place I would be comfortable or would have fun in. However, if I had to go to one of them though I would choose Nevada. Hope it helps.

I just got my letter of acceptance! So excited! Need to start making some decisions now...😀

Can someone tell me if it is possible to interview without having the secondary submitted? If I show up and haven't done it yet would that be a terrible, terrible thing?

I also got an acceptance letter yesterday, so I probably met you guys a couple of weeks ago - congrats!!!!

I am paying my deposit first thing on Monday - I love Touro Nevada.

I'm not sure if it would be a terrible thing but I'm pretty sure they won't consider accepting you without it... I think that the people interviewing you have your secondary to look at during the interview so that could be a problem if you haven't completed yours yet. I'd say if you are serious enough to go to this school for an interview you should probably have the secondary completed. But who knows... maybe give them a call and see? Good luck!

They will e-mail you about 2 weeks before your interview date to remind you to get your secondary in (it has to be there the Wednesday before your interview). They also tell you that you will NOT be allowed to interview if your secondary is not in their hands by the date they ask for it.

hey everyone! 😀 just want to wish you all the best of luck during this application cycle! i remember going through this last year (and the year before) and now it seems so far away! but all that craziness was worth it in the end, though now i'm getting my butt kicked by gross - i have really enjoyed my time here so far, even with block exams looming...and don't judge the building by its looks. there's something great about not having to be outside in the las vegas heat, you always see the 2nd year students and get to know them well, and the location is awesome!!

Never got that email. Things seem to be pretty crazy there in the admissions office since that Roger fellow left. Anyway, I sent in my secondary Saturday morning and I interviewed today. They never said anything about about not having my secondary.

Just had my interview yesterday... man, this place seems pretty cool. Really enjoyed meeting the professors I interviewed with, and the students who talked with us/gave us the tour were awesome. Good luck to everyone! Hopefully we'll hear back soon...

Just had my interview today too. Mostly everyone and everything about the school presents itself as supportive and geared towards their students to succeed. FANTASTIC learning environment.

If you are lucky, you won't get my interviewer. She's a tough cookie. Direct quote from my interviewer:

"When you become a student of Touro, we own your butt for the next four years."

Interview at Touro NV just scheduled for next Tuesday (Oct 13th)!! Hope to see some of you there!

:xf:

I was waitlisted. I was wondering how many people on the waitlist get in, and does anyone know how many people are put on the waitlist?

So... I emailed Gladys yesterday to tell her that my address was changing, and she replied with, "Congratulations! Your application to the program has been approved! Your letter should be going out shortly."

So... woohoo! Accepted! Though I also got accepted to Western, and I like them better, so I will be turning this one down. Still... yay!

Anywho, for the rest of you who interviewed 10/5, it looks like they've got our decisions ready. I'm guessing by 'shortly' she meant letters would be in the mail either today or tomorrow, so look for those soon. Alternately, it seems they don't mind 'unofficially' breaking the news to you via email, so it couldn't hurt to give that a try if you're anxious!

Best of luck to everyone!:luck::luck::luck:

For those who interview here, how is the school? Is it worth going if you are accepted elsewhere? I am referring to the travel cost to fly to NV.

If so why/why not

How does this school compare to Touro California? I think its branch campus of Touro CA if I am not mistaken.

I don't know if anyone else heard that TUCOM-NV was getting a new website, but they told us the day I had my interview (9/21).

They told us it would not be up for a while, but I saw it on some new financial aid documents and the new site is http://tun.touro.edu/

I tried it out and it is up and running - I just thought it was pretty cool and wanted to share it. Unlike the old one, this site is independent from TUCOM-CA.

I primary app was recently verified on October 4th. I would like to know how long it takes for TUCOM-NV to send out secondaries if you passed screening. I've received secondaries from I think all of the schools I applied to (and even Touro-CA via snail mail). How long should I expect/wait before doubts cross my mind for a secondary?

So anyone ready for a bizarre disheartening story? I interviewed at Touro-NV in September. My interview went pretty well and I felt confident. Well at the end one of my interviewers said: "I wouldn't be too worried, I'm sure you'll get in here."

This week I got rejected. haha. Pretty unprofessional.

I wrote an email to find out what the deal was (I have 9 interviews and don't want to have some blaring mistake I continue to repeat), and the lady in charge of acceptances was out of town and no one could give me any insight. Kind of strange. Just kind of felt like venting.

Applying to med-schools is such a game.

Don'tw worry... I had my interview on 9/14. Everything went perfectly well during the interview for me as well. Result? Waitlisted. I called to find out why. They said that although I met all the requirements, they were a little concerned because of the number of my science hours... I had more than enough but not more than more than enough. Does not make sense to me. I've gotten all As and maybe 5 Bs throughout my undergraduate years... grrr.

that sucks... sorry to hear that

it is a game

Woot! Got my acceptance in the mail today! Interviewed 10/5. This is my first one - huge stress relief! I will probably give up my seat if I'm accepted at RVU in the next few weeks, so don't give up hope if you're on the wait list. Good luck to you!

I'm weird and keep track of this kind of stuff, so here it is:

Primary Submitted: 8/13/09 (listed in AACOMAS)
Secondary Received: 8/24/09 (by email)
Secondary Submitted: 9/3/09 (by email)
Interview Invited Received: 9/10/09 (by email)
Interview: 9/22/09
Acceptance Received: 10/3/09 (Date I got letter at post office, actually post-marked on 9/30/09)

Obviously, there are busier times, holiday, and other factors to consider to make lengths of time vary from person to person.

Can someone please tell me if Touro has a standardized patient lab? I interviewed earlier this month and now I can't remember whether they had one or not!

i got an invite but i've been going back and forth about this. i can't imagine living near vegas for four years. =/ and its hard to swallow the cost just to take a peak at the school.

Yes, they do. Did you not get a tour?

And drplease, why did you apply if you couldn't see yourself living in Vegas? If it's any consolation, Henderson itself is pretty suburban. But basically, the rule of thumb here is that you don't turn down interviews or acceptances unless you're holding an acceptance to somewhere you'd rather be.

i applied for the reason most people apply.. because i want to go to medical school. from other applicants, it seems that they prefer this touro out of the three and i am curious as to what the campus has to offer firsthand.. but its definitely hard to KNOW you want to go to any one school if you haven't been given a tour or talked to students personally.. unfortunately, i am not wealthy enough to just give it a try if i do happen to gain an acceptance somewhere else. but the biggest reason why i'm hesitant because location does matter to me since my environment has an affect on me and potentially in my performance.

i wasn't knocking on the school if that's how you interpreted it.
