TUCOM-NV Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hopefully someone can clear this up for me.

I interviewed back in February.

I remember at our interview day that Oscar said if you are placed on the waitlist it meant two things.

1) High waist list individuals would not be offered candidacy into Touro-NV Masters/PB program but would be offered candidacy for early accept 2015

2) Low and Middle waist list individuals would be offered candidacy into the Masters program.

Does anyone remember Oscar saying this on interview day?

I am really confused by the real difference between "High" wait list and this "Accepted" wait list

Are there any differences?

If so, is my deduction in that because I was offered early accept candidacy mean that I am on the high waitlist correct?

I just recently sent a letter of intent, a recent first author publication of mine, and a letter of rec from a professor of mine to the add comm so hopefully that will help in the process.

Someone please offer opinions, yall are scaring me with this "accepted" wait list lingo, because I thought that there were only three tiers to the wait list , and your standing was roughly discernible through investigation of your waitlist letter.

Thanx,

10guage.

Just wondering, 10gauge--your waitlist letter said that you were offered early acceptance for next year? I remember reading somewhere on this thread that there won't be any of those offers.

Thanks. That is actually reassuring. How many people are on the waitlist? By the sound of it, I'd say there are a lot of people!! 3X80=240??

I think 240 is far too high an estimate. Someone also posted this a while ago if this is at all reassuring:

"Looking through some notes I made when I interviewed here. Nothing about the accepted waitlist, but last cycle ~40 students (having trouble reading my own hand-writing....can't tell if I wrote 40 or 46) in the class were taken off the waitlist. They went through 82 students on the waitlist to fill these spots."

There is absolutely no way to tell what will happen. People will have other acceptances at other schools and whatnot. Someone previously posted that they've never not accepted everyone on the accepted wait list but as far as I can tell, the accepted wait list is new this year. I couldn't find anything about it in previous years' threads. And essentially, it's like there are 4 tiers. The accepted wait list is like the top tier, followed by the high, medium and low lists. I believe that it is correct that the high wait list is offered early admissions for next year and that those on the medium and low lists are sent invitations to apply to the MHS program. I believe I remember these statements from interview day.

Oh, and I don't think anyone said there wouldn't be early acceptance ... only that there wouldn't be deferred acceptance.

Just to add fuel to the "paranoia" of waitlisted. My letter said that I was waitlisted but the last paragraph had the whole "you will be considered as a candidate for Early Accept to the class of 2015 should you ultimately not be offered acceptance to the class of 2014".

But then I got the email Monday inviting me to apply to the MHS. *shrug* Who really knows how the magic works?

Admissions told me that they did have an accepted waitlist last year but it wasn't specifically called "accepted waitlist." Last year there was about 20 ppl on this "accepted waitlist" and they were just tacked on to the top of the "high" portion of the waitlist. So I believe last year there were around 150 ppl regular waitlisted with 50 in each section...but the high portion of the waitlist actually ended up being like 70 ppl because of the 20 "accepted waitlist" ppl. I hope this makes sense.

I'm guessing more like 150 on the waitlist

I'm pretty sure that everyone who was put on the regular waitlist got the same letter indicating that some students would be chosen as candidates for the Early Acceptance. I don't think it really means anything as far as our position on the waitlist.

It's kind of weird that we got the email about the MHS program this early because we aren't supposed to get our rank until May 17. If what everyone is saying about the MHS program is true, then apparently they have already ranked us.

They already ranked us in terms of accepted waitlist, high, medium, and low however they have yet to rank us as #1 or 2 or 3 or 20 on each tier of the waitlist.

At least as far as we know, they haven't, but even if they did they won't release that info until mid-may (assuming they release it at all).

The end of my letter said, "Your interest in becoming a member of the Fall 2010 entering class is appreciated." So no early candidacy for 2015 here.

I also posted earlier that I talked to someone several days ago about there being about 90 or so people on the regular waitlist. So 20 on the accepted waitlist + 90ish waitlist = 110.

Ha ha! I totally forgot about this posting. Thanks for re-posting and reminding me! It's funny...you read so many postings that sometimes you forget what you read! 😀

That sounds better than my calculation! It seems like May 15th is coming so slowly!

i am officially not going to be thinking about it at all until I get a phone call or email.

All that I can deduce from the situation is that, nothing is guaranteed and this is certainly a dynamic process.

Best of luck friends,

Same here, although no one until the poster a few above me said that they hadn't gotten the early Accept part of the WL letter. Who knows, I'm not assuming anything and basically trying to make plans like I'm not getting in, groan.

My sentiments exactly. I know I make it so much worse for myself too, checking back here all the time. And then there's the fact that May 15th rolls around, and then what ... we keep waiting, but with even more anticipation? Ahhhh! 😛

Um may 15 is a Saturday = Jewish school = sabath. Highly doubt were gonna hear anything that day. Just thought u might want to mark ur calendar for at least the 17th.

Nope, none...just waiting....think there will be movement next month though! soon

16 more days and counting down before they will allow any movement.

Anybody else holding their breath day in n day out?

Yes! I want to get in here so so badly. It makes me sick if I think about it too long. So, I know that students on the wait list can call and get their ranks after the 15th, correct? Same for accepted wait list?

I actually doubt were gonna get any info...everything seems pretty hush hush..they're not releasing any info on the waitlist and Oscar says they're not even releasing how many ppl r waitlistes. So try to not get too excited about the 15th, cus unless a spot opens you probably won't get much info...

I'm sure there will be movement after the 15th because for most medical schools, students are required to choose one school and withdraw from all others that they are accepted to. Oh yeah and Oscar did say that after you can call and see where you are on the waitlist...that is high, middle or low. There are no levels for the "Accepted Waitlist."

Oscar recently told me that people on the accepted waitlist and waitlist will probably not be hearing anything until early June, because he will be out of the office for a week and a half after May 15th.
AHH..the wait is the worse!

ugh! what! darn-it......that is like a critical time.

You guys do know that May 15 is a Saturday, right? We are supposed to get our ranking on Monday, May 17.

Noooo...that's not what I wanted to hear. Oh, well.

Lol what??? I hope he was joking ... I mean that's a joke, right? There has to be someone else that could take care of telling us that we're accepted ... Not faaaaair. Oscar seems like a very understanding man. I have a hard time believing that if spots are open in that period of time, that he wouldn't have someone else in line to call applicants and inform them. There are other employees in the admissions office. I mean, a few weeks makes a difference when you have to do things like get financial aid, find housing, etc., or when you potentially have to choose between other admissions offers. I would like to look into this news further. It doesn't sound right. Plus, it seems strange that Oscar would choose that week and a half to take off? (Unless it's to avoid the barage of phone calls from applicants such as myself =P) I mean, the man is definitely entitled to a vacation, but I can't imagine that there isn't someone else to take over his responsibilities during that time. Can anyone confirm this information???

Sry, I didn't mean to cause all this commotion. I called recently to inquire more about the accepted waitlist ...will it be ranked?...when can we hear something? etc etc... He said he doesn't know if the accepted waitlist will be ranked yet because the committee hasn't had a chance to met yet and its up to them to decide. They plan to meet again after the 15th, but I don't know exactly when (assuming that Oscar will probably need to be present at the meeting). And he told me it will be early June when we might hear something. I believe he said he had some recruiting fairs to attend or something.

If someone calls to confirm this information, can you ask to see when the committee will be meeting to discuss all this?

I emailed and Oscar told me that the committee will be meeting June 15th? I'm confused though. It seemed from his email that he was telling me that students can call and find out their rank/tier on the wait list after June 15th, but I had definitely thought it was May 15th and it seems others had heard that day as well. And he told you to expect wait list movement in early June but he told me that he could not say at all when to expect any movement. I understand him not wanting to tell me anything when he can't definitively say when things will happen. Are they not allowing any movement at all before meeting to discuss these things? I mean, I would imagine that there are at least a few open spots already waiting for applicants. This wait is seriously stressing me out. Everyone I know asks me every other day, "So when will you know about school?" #&*%*#&^&$ :scared: The end of May is a strange time for recruitment fairs. Do they go to universities/colleges? The school I attended is already out for the summer by then.

From Oscar:

Hi NavyRick,

There has not been any type of movement as of now. We anticipate movements and rankings will begin mid-June. I will keep you posted so if you are chosen, you can submit all the necessary documentation. Best wishes,

Oscar E. Parra, M.Ed.

Mid-June. yuck.

What does it mean to be on an "accepted" waitlist?

It just means you're at the top of the waitlist. Top 20? Top 50? Not quite sure.

From what we all seem to have gathered, it means you have a pretty good chance of acceptance. No idea what the numbers are exactly, but I like to console myself with a three-digit percentage.

When I spoke to Oscar today, he said they have moved the admissions committee meeting from May 15th to June 15th (for the time being). You cannot find out your rank or tier until after that. I cried, no joke. I don't understand. I was thinking maybe we'd find out late May, but late June?! Later than that?! Do they absolutely not accept anyone before they have that committee meeting, regardless if there are openings are not? Perhaps someone else could call and find out? I feel like I've done enough bothering Oscar for the time being.

melissa,

i'm really sorry to hear about how difficult this is for you. i really have no words of comfort except to say that i do hope you hear sooner, and that i'm sure there's always a chance.

it's been my experience that TUNCOM's admissions department works like a swiss watch, so i wouldn't be surprised if they cook something up.

best of luck.

Ah, you're right. I appreciate your kind words. It has been comforting for me, knowing that all of you are in my shoes as well. Even though we're all strangers, we all have our desire to become physicians, our desire to attend Touro, and this wait list thing in common. After having some time to contemplate/meditate I am feeling better. We can not worry about the things we cannot control, right? I was just really telling myself "May 15th." (Or 17th or whatever). June seems so far away and July seems further away. Yet, oddly enough, August seems far too soon. I know that makes no sense. And best of luck to you too. I hope that we will be classmates next year.

Actually, Melissa, I know what you mean because I feel the same way! Waiting another month to hear back from admissions seems like a long long time from now. Yet, I also feel that everything will have to happen in a rush before August.

This postponement of their meeting is inconvenient and causing more anxiety. However, there is no point to worrying because if everything turns out OK, there was no purpose for your worrying. Why bother worrying? Or, if things do turn out for the worse, you're probably going to worry then. So why bother worrying twice? (this is what you get from taking Philosophy courses lol)

I am applying to med schools this upcoming cycle, with Touro being one of my top choices. I was just wondering why quite a few of you are getting emotionally drained from the "accepted waitlist" movement. Did you guys not apply early enough or was it your stats? I would understand navyrick's situation, but if you had all your grades/MCAT, activities, and LORs ready, then why did you wait until the February/March interviews where spots were likely to be filled? I'm like really concerned since this waitlist situation is quite an ordeal, since there are other ppl here on SDN that keep on emphasizing "apply early" (which I think would be quite ideal for those with good enough stats to begin with). I hope you guys do find a place in the '14 class, best of luck!

The whole June 15th thing is actually incredibly frustrating. While it may not seem like a huge deal to move it back a month, we are still on waitlists blah blah blah it also goes past the submission date for both AMCAS and AACOMAS for those of us planning on re-applying. If I were to call and hear I was #1 on the high waitlist on May 15th or even on the high waitlist at all (Oscar said they generally make it through the high waitlist w/ accepts) I would likely wait to apply again a little later to try to avoid spending $1000+ applying early.

Now I will be submitting June 1st and there is a potential just 2 weeks later to hear from Oscar that i got in. While it would still be fantastic news, its still frustrating to know I could have found out earlier and saved myself a boatload of money I could use to help me move and get established/support myself until financial aid comes in.

Good question. Personally, there is nothing I regret more than not applying earlier. I suppose I didn't understand that "Early" means like July. It certainly could be an issue of stats but there is no way to say. I took the MCAT in May 2009, had my LORs and AACOMAS completely finished in May 2009, except for the personal statement. I really struggled in writing a good PS and put it off until the very last minute. I think in the end it turned out really great but I didn't end up submitting my AACOMAS until November. And then, I was financially drained from submitting AACOMAS and AAMCAS and did not have money right away to do all the secondaries so I couldn't submit the secondaries until January. So, for me I didn't have a choice about interview dates. Also, I submitted the Touro secondary in early January ($100, pretty expensive as far as secondaries go) but I didn't really understand that we needed to send all our transcripts before they'd offer interviews. A few weeks went by before I called the school. When I did, I had my transcripts sent but one of the schools I attended notoriously takes foreeeeever to do this. So all in all I didn't end up interviewing until the beginning of March. If I could do it all over again would I apply much much earlier? Of course! But I have no way of knowing if the outcome would be any different. Students who apply early end up on wait lists too. So yes, the earlier you apply, the better your chances are. But I can't beat myself up about it, especially if in the end I get into Touro, where I really would like to go. This wait list thing is miserable, though.

Good point. Yeah, it's unbelievably frustrating. It would be much less so if they could tell us why they chose to move it back a whole month. Is there seriously no movement ahead of the meeting? Is that a positive? I'm on another wait list, but I'd much much much rather go to Touro. But I feel like if I get accepted at the other school, I should put down the deposit, just in case, right? But then I'm out $2000. I really don't have that kind of money to just be throwing around.

This question is for students who have already been accepted. Would someone who has already been accepted be willing to send (if you have an electronic copy available or can easily scan it) the health papers in the acceptance packet so I can have the detailed instructions? (I can PM you my email address) I'm wondering if I can do the health screening, immunizations, etc. in advance. Or if that isn't possible, how recent do the Hepatitis B and MMR vaccinations have to be? Do we need Hep A? TB test? How recent? I know someone mentioned Varicella titer. I have proof of Varicella titer from March 2009; Anyone know if that would be acceptable? What other tests/vaccinations do we need? Is there a special form that is only in the acceptance packet? I just want there to be something I can do while I wait. I feel a little better about it if I can be proactive and accomplish something and then there is one less thing to scramble to do in that small window of time if I'm accepted.

I've been working on this for a few weeks getting things done. As long as you've started by the time school starts you will be fine. Some of these vaccinations take 3-6 months to complete if you dont have them.

You may have to scramble when you are accepted to get the physical done. I wouldn't recommend doing it before, it can become quite costly from what I understand. Generally, the physical exam and tests are not covered under your insurance so they can get pretty expensive, not something you'd want to do in the off chance you don't get in (i hope you do though!).

Like the previous poster said, as long as you've started the vaccinations and such before you start school you will be fine. I don't think a school is going to stop you from starting because you were accepted a few days before and couldn't get into the Dr 😉 at least I hope not!

Why would they not be covered by insurance? I got a physical last year just because it had been a while and I wanted to, including a CBC and urinalysis and my insurance covered it with co-pay. Just wondering why you say insurance might not cover. Is it some kind of special physical, lol? I have extremely good insurance coverage. Although of course, I would not pay out of pocket for these things if my insurance won't pay, since there is the chance of not getting in. What are these tests that take so long and are so expensive? I have up-to-date TB (done in Dec), Varicella titer last year. Tetanus is up-to-date. How often does MMR have to be done? My immunization record shows last one in 1991. I did all 3 Hep B shots, finishing the 3rd in 2003. I only did the 1st Hep A shot though. What other tests are there? You are right though that I don't believe that my insurance will cover vaccinations that they don't deem necessary.

I just want to feel like I am able to do something towards the goal of starting school in August. *sigh*

Relax. Wait to hear from Oscar and he will fill you in on what you need to do. If it were me I wouldn't want to jinx myself.

I have a question for those planning on attending Touro-NV:

A few days ago we received an email about the health insurance through the school - I'm married, so I will need to either make my wife get her own insurance or add her to my school insurance, but does anyone else think that the insurance is extremely high priced? To add my wife is almost not even affordable - like over $500 per month for both of us (we don't even have kids).

Our current insurance will not cover us in Nevada, even as students 🙁

Or am I just crazy? I would really like to hear what others are planning on doing for their health insurance.

Thanks!

So what you say, all us accepted waitlist people WHEN we get accepted (because we will get accepted--get your mentalities straight) go out for a drink the first weekend of August? The people who are already accepted are not invited though, they didn't have to go through the hell that were goin through lol. So whose in?
