Tulane vs. Drexel

Pros and cons? Major differences between them? Anybody choose between these schools in the past?

Definitely leaning in one direction, just wondering what others think about these schools.

In my experience, Tulane has a better reputation. TUSOM students elected to be there, whereas many Drexel students attended because that was their only acceptance it seemed.

However, you can't really place a value on friends and family :/ NOLA is far, far away.

Is cost a consideration? I would agree that Tulane has a slightly better reputation, but the difference to me is small enough that the price tag would be a huge consideration. I can't comment on Drexel, but I loved Tulane on my interview day. The students there seemed really happy. Good luck with your decision!

Hi everyone!

I realize this is excessively early for most of you that have been accepted to Tulane (congratulations!!) But for any of you who are in New Orleans already and want to go ahead and purchase your 1st year books.... I'm selling! I'm a fourth year about to go into residency, so want to get rid of my books for cheap before I move! It doesn't really matter what med school you're going to - some of these books are essential regardless (for example, Netter anatomy cards, physio, etc). Feel free to PM if you're interested in the books, and I will send you a list of what I have and the prices.

Also, if you're still making a decision on whether or not you want to come to Tulane (I have LOVED it here) and need to know anything about Tulane in general... or in particular residency/the match at Tulane, feel free to PM as well, seeing as I'm a current fourth year who just matched (I'm from the south, but matched at my #1 choice - a very competitive NE program in a relatively competitive specialty).

I was accepted to tulane and received an interview invite from Drexel in early march. I turned down the drexel interview because:
1.) I had heard some not so great things about it on SDN and my parents went to the forerunner schools (one went to Hahnemann another to MCP) and they felt Tulane was definitely better in their day and probably now.
2.) I had an interview at Jefferson the week before that went really well and I feel (knock on wood) confident about it.
3.) New Orleans v. the area of Philly drexel is in is really no competition.
4.) I didn't like being placed on hold. at Tulane I felt wanted at drexel it felt like I was an after thought.
Tulane's commitment to helping under served communities, clinical exposure, and a more diverse patient population.
5.) Seriously, it's New Orleans, only been once (my interview day) but four years there seems awesome.
6.) Drexel is closer to home (from RI), which is nice, but personally, I will probably be at least waitlisted at two schools at least as close to, if not closer to, home than Drexel.

for me I never really thought twice about not even interviewing at Drexel once I had my acceptance at Tulane.

OP, you haven't really given us much to go on. They are both medical schools. They both will make you a doctor. Your future will depend far more on you than on which of these two schools you go to. You will succeed at either.

The major difference between them is the cities they are located in. I don't know much about Drexel, but when you were in New Orleans if you got the feeling that this would be a fun town to be in with all their festivals and parades and drinking and stuff, well, yeah. It's New Orleans. It's always a festival and a parade and drinking and stuff. And we get to be doctors 4 years later.

If you want to be a doctor AND have an incredible time when you aren't studying, come on down. If you're going to stay in your room and study all the time, you should probably let somebody else come to Tulane.

OP, I attended Tulane as an undergrad, not for med school, and though I had my own problems with the administration, NOLA is a city that's just impossible to beat. I would recommend anyone live there for a few years, and you've got that opportunity now. Totally seize it.

Also, as a Biomedical Engineering major, I had to take a class at the med school (anatomy and physiology in the cadaver lab) and it was one of my favorite classes in college.
But I don't know that it necessarily means it's a great med school, maybe just that med school classes are better than undergrad classes?

Assuming that this post means that you got accepted into these two schools, excellent job. Congrats on your acceptances! 👍 (Go NOLA)
