So is anyone thinking about housing yet??

I am weighing the merits of living on my own versus with a roomie... Optimally I would like to live on my own (so I could set my own study schedule and stick to it), but at the same time, saving money on rent by living with another med student sounds nice too...

DO 🙂laugh: ) most of the current students share apartments with one another, or do they chose to live alone??

Thanks in advance to anyone who might answer...........

even though i'm still waitlisted, i've thought about housing in general (at other schools as well). i'm like you - where i like to be by myself at times. but i'd slightly prefer living with just one (maaayybe two) other person. i feel like it would keep me sane and could potentially be a study buddy. just think - after spending a night at school studying, would you rather come home to an empty apt or have a roomie to de-stress with? it also depends on what kind of person you are, but that's just some food for thought 🙂

haha, someone's got a corny sense of humor. i think the answer 2 ur question really dep on the person. i know alot of ppl who live alone and alot who have roommates. then again, there r a couple of complexes that have alot of som students at them (the village, echelon glen, the landings, stonington court, etc) and even if u live alone, alot of times ppl hang out or study 2gether at those complexes so u have ppl 2 hang out w/ 2 study or destress and u can also go home 2 ur apt 2 b alone when u need. that could b the best of both worlds if u're looking 2 have "me" time as well as the option 4 alot of students 2 congregate 2gether often. merry xmas all!

hahaha...fair enough...

As someone who lived both on my own and with roomies in college, I can honestly say that you can't really have it both ways. Living alone is great because...well...you can do what you want to do, when you want to do it.

On the other hand, it is niiice to have a roommate to unwind with - provided that you get along well with him or her! Personally, I dont think i know anyone who is moving down to SOM to attend school...so if I chose to live with someone else, how can I be sure if we are going to be compatible???

Oh well, I suppose I will have to make that decision when I meet the other members of the incoming class. Maybe I'll just hit it off with someone.🙄

Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Does anyone know how often they send out secondaries? Is it just to everyone or what?

Marthea:

I do not believe they are selective about who they send the 2ndaries out to. If you are waiting for the package know that you don't have to! Visit the SOM website - you will find the 2ndary there.

G'luck!!!

Bah, I didn't really think they were. I just got an email from them asking me to fill out the secondary (it's already done so it'll go out tomorrow) but I know they don't like for people to send them in without being asked. I wasn't sure if that meant they were selective or not. Guess it was wishful thinking...

yay! thanks for posting the apartment complexes! I was just about to write a thread asking for some names because I'm going down friday to look around...I wont be in the country again until May so I want to get an idea of what some of them look like...

I also like the idea of living alone but living close by to other people...definitely best of both worlds. thanks alchemist!

i emailed u the apt list from last yr 2 help. some of the info is outta date but *most* of the numbers r still active. i'm working on an updated apt guide 4 u guys but wasn't planning 2 do that til feb (since i'm working on a student host program at the moment), not realizing some peeps might need it now. sorry.

anyways, i do think that the most students r conc at the landings at pine lake, the village, echelon glen, and stonington...though there r other apt complexes w/ more than a few students. i'd just advise staying away from woodmere and anything on (east) gibbsboro road.

I'm considering trying to buy a condo (pending some paperwork, I should be inheriting some $$$ that I could use as a downpayment). If I did that, I would find a roomie. But I'm hoping a condo would be big enough that each of us would have enough room to study without imposing, and we'd likely both be studying at the same times so it shouldn't be too rough.

This is all tentative, would need to find a place I like.

If I remember correctly, Paula told me that there is a housing day. I assume that this will be a great opportunity to meet potential roomies and to visit the nearby apartment complexes. Trouble is, I don’t know when this event is set to take place. Anyone know??

I am reaaaly loving work right now, but truth be told: I can't wait for school to start!!!

I know what you mean (although I've been working full time for only a few months now).
Anyway I found this list of apartments within 5 miles of the school (I believe it was compiled by the school):

I think the accepted student day is later in the spring (april perhaps)

I just called to verify that they received my deposit and they told me that they are sending out housing information within the next few days. I don't know when a housing day is although Paula said that there is a reception for accepted students in April, which I am assuming may include housing as well.

I am also sooo excited for school to start!! 🙂

I actually called Paula yesterday and she said that its going to be on April 13th! So mark your calendars!

Thanks for the information peoples!

So what is everyone doing over the next eight months?? I was suupposed to be traveling to Vienna for a medical conference with my company, but now that they know I am leaving for school, I am not so sure if they are going to invest that kind of money into me :meanie: I only bring this up b/c one of my goals between now and August is to do some traveling....

I'm going to put everything into school once it starts (which is easy, considering how much I LOVE to study:idea:). I want to be the best doctor that I can possibly be........................

I just wanted to chime in on the seats/classroom complaint in this thread (or another thread, I forgot and I am pressed for time). The classrooms are officially being expanded and redone and so will the seating to accomodate more people and give more room to each person. Very exciting news for next years class and beyond.

👍 Hugh sigh of relief from my corner!! I'll take that off of my "cons" list for UMDNJ!

Awesomesauce!

Anyone know if the AdCom is meeting soon? I don't know if it's monthly or what, but the last meeting was on 12/16.

yep they are indeed still interviewing.

they'll interview 4 a while yet. i interviewed on valentine's day last yr. and i know some who did in march and i wanna say april..somehow i think the magic # might go down closer 2 may/june when the bulk WL movement starts...but who knows if u had a good fall semester maybe u'll get over that magic # 😉

Anyone know if they going to make phone calls again or if it's back to letters?

:luck: :luck: :luck:

Doesn't really matter. I plan on calling early next week. I e-mailed Paula last week and she told me that the committee can look at the waitlist at any time.

I talked to Paula yesterday, and she said that they haven't looked at the alternate list yet. She said that they are expecting the list to shift around now that people are finding out acceptances elsewhere. But the jist I got from talking to her was that the majority of us on the alternate list won't hear until at least May.

I am so sorry to hear that!! I totally know how you feel 🙁

They ended up finding my LORs shortly after I called. But like you, I also sent them in again. About a 2 weeks later I got an interview invitation in the mail.

If I were you I would call next week just to verify that you are complete and that they received your LORs. They should tell you when you will be reviewed, but If not, I would ask when the next committee review is.

You are not too late! Good luck to you!:luck: I hope that you get an interview soon 🙂

I posted a month back, about how UMDNJ had lost my LoRs, and I mailed them in, again (I should have been complete there in October). Well, two weeks ago, I called and left a message. Never received a call back. Last week, same thing. This past Tuesday, I called, and the woman who answered couldn't find my application/secondaries/etc at all!!! 😱 So, she took my e-mail and phone number and said she would call me back. By today, I hadn't heard anything, so I called again, and am waiting to hear from them. I really like this school, and want a chance to see it before I make any final decisions. Do I have terrible luck or does this happen to anyone else?

Then would that mean that those of us who are only a few points away from the magic number should hear relatively soon?

you'd have to ask paula on that one to definitely know. but from my impression, you'll only hear relatively soon if you reach the magic number by it either being lowered or your fall 06 grades bump you up to what you need. hope that helps.

So this is going to sound like a really stupid question... When you guys previously mentioned "the magic number" I thought you were referring to the class size... and now that doesn't make sense. Could you please tell me what that phrase refers too?

Thanks 😕😳

the magic number refers to the composite score that SOM gives you. it mostly consists of your mcat and gpa, but also includes LORs, ECs, where you went to college, and your interview (it could include other things as well that i'm not aware of). the number you need to be admitted is an 85. the adcom can decide to make that number lower at anytime. those that are close to that number are waitlisted, and those not are rejected.

Everything in your application is ranked out of 85 points. If you reach 85 points you get accepted...that's the current magic number.

thanks!!

Good luck to everyone waiting to hear from umdnj-som! I remember I was a nervous wreck for several days last month. I kept checking my mail and phone messages obsessively. Hope to be able to welcome you as my classmates :luck: :luck: :luck:

And I have a new mailman who delivers mail late, so I can't check before class...so all class I'm wondering if a letter came.

That's ok, though...the mailman's cool for trekking through this cold wind to bring me my mail at all. 👍

Well, my AACOMAS is updated with all my Fall grades. My overall gpa went from 3.24 to 3.26 and the science gpa went from 3.11 to 3.15. Somehow that doesn't seem like enough to push me over that line, but I'm holding out hope. Maybe I have an 84.4 before the recalculation and they round up at 84.5🙂 .

I called admissions and the letters were mailed out this morning

waitlist...that letter was so confusing...

can anyone PM me paula's number/email address? (nevermind! thanks)

i usually just get in touch with her through the main number. they either connect you or you can leave a message. they are super nice and helpful, and the messages almost always get to Paula.

Hi everyone I am new to SDN, I did read through all the previous messages, and I have to say this is an interesting bunch. Congratulations to everyone who got in, and best of luck to those on the waiting list. I have a few questions, like most of you UMDNJ is my first choice, I just got notified on my interview this week, and I am in the process of scheduling it.

My first question is does anyone know what number they are expanding the class size to, and if it is going to take effect for this upcomming class?

Is anyone out there scheduled for an interview at UMDNJ?

Does anyone know when the Adcom will be meeting next?
