UMDNJ-SOM Adcom meeting

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hmm, i just remembered something interesting that Paula told me.. She said you get points based on your undergrad school. I wonder where Uconn ranks on that list and how many points it got me or lost me. I hope they realize that we choose undergrad schools for many factors, especially the public ones(tuition). I wish I had asked her.

Undergrad school is worth 5 points max.

Did Paula give you guys any idea just how fast the wait list moves? She told me that they did not reject many people after the interview, but I wonder if that is in fact true considering the wait list seems so long.

She told me that they start looking at the waitlist in January

That makes sense, I believe that those who got accepted before Dec. 1st (I think) have to respond by Dec. 10th (maybe 15th??) either way, it makes sense that they would begin to look at the wait list after their first deadline of deposits on acceptances.

Dr Kuba, DrMax & EMT2ER glad to hear you guys are only a few steps away, I hope I am in the same position after I speak to Paula next week.

I looked into last year's thread and saw the first person got off the waitlist at the end of May.. I believe that was thealchemist.:scared:

The first person from SDN did, anyway. There are plenty of other people out there!!

A friend of mine used to be on the admissions committee and she told me that the list can start moving in January. You cannot go by this board, it is not representative of the applicant pool.

that's what i was told by paula (but it could've been when the main movement was that happens around may/june)...there could've been a couple of earlier ppl in jan (i dunno) and she was thinking i was the 1st off when the bulk of the movement begins so don't worry 2 much guys. i know its hard (i was in the middle of reapplying when i got off the WL so i understand). and that's great, if u guys r a few pts off the magic #, work hard 2 get good grades 2 raise ur points then...maybe u'll get off earlier than i did since ur points seem very close. i'm glad that u guys seem really excited about our school. its a small community (our class is called big at around 106-108, can't remember) but a tight one. if u have any q's (or still want the match list), pls feel free 2 ask and def come up 4 a 2nd look next semester (there's an accepted students day and the 2nd yrs usu throw a party then, which i didn't get 2 go 2 since i got off WL later). 2 finals down (genetics, OMM), 3 more 2 go, starting on tues! good luck w/ the magic #!

i think it also dep when the class is full and whether u have ppl who withdraw and when (that is, ppl holding mult accepts or who get off their top choice's WL if its not SOM, when that happens basically)

How are you?
It would be great if you could provide a match list. I can't seem to come across it anywhere. And if you don't have it, do you know anything about general surgery, both allopathic and osteopathic?
Thanks four your help

*bumping this thread*

so I guess the next meeting is on the 15th...

I hope I hear pretty quick afterward, I would love to get in to UMDNJ before having to pay a deposit at a different school.

when was your interview?

I interviewed at UMDNJ on Nov. 30th, and they told me that they were meeting on Dec. 15th. I am hoping to get a call from them then! I am soo anxious waiting because it is my top choice :scared: They said that they will try to call, but that they don't always. I really hope they do!!

Good luck to everyone waiting to hear from them :luck:

I got a phone call on Monday asking me to go in yesterday for an interview! I went in, everything went great. I love that school to pieces, I really really really want to get in.

I just got an acceptance to LECOM-B this morning (first acceptance...I'm gonna be a doctor!!!). I hope UMDNJ will accept me before I need to pay their expensive $1500 deposit (due 1/4/7).

AdCom meets on the 15th, my interview papers said they'll mail letters after, but my interviewer said that they'll probably call anyone who gets accepted.

I am so happy for you!! I know that you really wanted to interview there. That is so awesome that you were able to interview so quickly after your invite. I realllly hope that we get good news on Friday. Please post if you get a phone call! Good luck!!!:luck:

I don't think they called most people from the last cycle, at least not those on sdn...I just got a letter

Dunno, that's just what the guy there said. But the paper said a letter.

I just want in so bad. It's the greatest place on earth (moreso than Disney).

I like it a lot as well, but it's def not in the best of locations...except for philly next door

I like the location (then again I grew up a few minutes away). Looks like any other NJ suburb to me...residential part and strip mall part. And being next to the PATCO is fantastic for anyone [who is nuts] and wants to come in from Philly w/o wasting gas.

I can't stand Philly. I've lived 5 minutes from Philly my whole life and avoided it. It's such and old-people city. You're better off hopping on the White Horse and driving the half hour to Atlantic City, there's stuff for the younger or college aged crowd to do there. AC is fun (but expensive).

I totally agreee...I  UMNDJ

I know I should be patient and just wait for the letter, but do you think it is a bad idea to call on Friday to ask for our status if they don't call us?

yes, they will not give any decisions over the phone

Ok thanks koshka, I figured they probably wouldnt

if you scroll down in this thread you'll see that someone found out the decision by phone. but people who called after him were just told that the letters have been mailed.

i know it's easy to say "don't stress out" ...but i found the best thing to do is to find ways to distract yourself. i was waiting all week and freaking out, couldn't concentrate on anything, but at the end i just said "f it" and put all my energy into my work. so the time went by fast and the phone call came as a nice surprise. good luck :luck:

You are definitely right. I am at the same point where you were, I can't freak out anymore. My finals are beginning soon, so I will concentrate on them and that will be a great distraction! Also, I am going to try to stay away from SDN for a little while.

Thanks for the encouragement :)

LMAO. You've GOT to be kidding??? Philly is an old-people city??? Atlantic City over Philly???? LMAO. Just exactly how many years has it been since you've been to Philadelphia??? You obviously HAVE avoided it!!!

If you want an old-people city, AC is the place. Thousands of blue hairs arrive daily on the casino buses. Just don't get in their way when they're heading towards the slot machines or the buffet line. You'll come home with more pocketbook bruises than you'll be able to count.

That is my impression, that's why i didn't reply to that comment...i actually really like philly

Nah, those aren't the places you go to in AC. Firewaters, Irish Pub, Mur Mur, places that have all the AC wealth pumped into them so that they're really crazy. I don't gamble so I don't even go to that part. You'd think that Tropicana is a satellite campus of my college because it's packed every night. Everything is close together so you can hop from one place to another, anything from karaoke to sports bars to dance clubs to cafes is all right there. There are no old people anywhere around these things!

The other bonus is how cheap it is compared to Philly. To go to Philly from the NJ suburbs you have to pay tolls to get in from NJ, pay for parking, pay to get in the club, and then pay for drinks. At AC you can drive right in with no tolls, park for free at the casinos by getting a free card, and there's no cover in the good places because they want to lure college kids in. You can even get free drinks if you stop on the casino floor. Now when you're a poor med student and AC is only a few minutes further, which do you think is better?

I go into Philly more than I like to. Just the other week we went to Tiki Bob's...LAME. A tiny little room with an open floor and a bad light show. With a cover to get in. We left after an hour and went to the place next door...also no good. But so expensive! And that's pretty representative of the other places I've been to there also.

If I want to listen to the orchestra or go to a museum...Philly is the place, don't ge me wrong. And I'll root for the Eagles until the end. But if I want to have fun, AC. In high school the underage crowd would try to get into Philly. Now I don't know a single person who would want to go there if AC was in driving distance. Philly was cool in high school, AC is cool now.

The one downside of AC = smoking is not banned yet.

Don't forget about the new Pier @ Cesear's, we have out own Continental and Buhdikan, plus more like Game On, Trinity, and Sonsi...

Trinity had free drinks the other week, it was the first time I've been there. I love the atmosphere and want to go back for dinner sometime. Feels like being in Europe with the nice fireplaces and sofas scattered around. I've only stopped in Game On to meet my bf, but I've never seen so many TVs in my life, lol. Not my kinda thing, but for guys who are into sports it must be like heaven.

Gotta check out Sonsi sometime. Haven't been to Continental or Buddakan either.

That fountain at the end of The Pier is so cool. The bf and I were walking by and it wasn't doing anything, and we were saying how pointless it is. Then all of a sudden WHAM this crazy music and water spraying up, down from the ceiling, etc. We took back everything bad we had said about the thing, lol.

Haha, The Pier shops though...no thanks! $$$ But that's why the AC outlets are right there, much better deals.

Im going to write Paula an email asking her a couple more questions.. so if anyone has any general questions they want me to add to my list, let me know.

What's the exact percentage of students that received their 1st choice in residency? What about 1st or 2nd choice? - Where can we find it if she doesn't have it? Why hasn't she mailed me the latest match list after she told me she would?

I was there interviewing yesterday and they were meeting today. She said that they were hoping to call people this time. Good luck everybody!!

I think we'll have to wait until Monday at the earliest. Ahh!!

I think we'll have to wait until Monday at the earliest. Ahh!!

Today they decided to outright reject and who is deemed acceptable. Your file is brought before 20 people and all 20 have to approve you. If this happens you are put on a "waitlist" and on Monday the Dean will go over that and decide who to accept.

That's the word on the street.

Good luck!! I can't stand all of this waiting!

They said at my interview that they wanted to call, but no on on SDN has been called so I don't know.

But I hope this is true:

I'm assuming their next meeting is after the holidays, correct?

Pineapple, I too am from New Jersey and really want to get accepted to UMDNJ. I felt like I was waiting forever for my interview invite (2 months), so I called to check my status, and they lost my LORs!! They said they "thought they were around somewhere" and would look more  I finally got my interview invitation 2 weeks later. So if you haven't done so already, I would give them a call just to make sure they have everything! Hope you hear good news from them soon :)

The same thing happened to me!! I hadn't heard ANYTHING from them, so I called this past Monday, and they told me they lost my LORs. They were sent out on 9/13, and I was complete there as of the end of October. I asked my undergrad committee to mail out my letters again, and they will. Should I call again next week? Is there even any hope, right now, since it's late in their process? I'm really bummed :(

Congrats on your interviews. I'm jealous :p

I'm pretty sure the next meeting is after the holidays. Also, I'd say there's still hope. They were saying that they'd still be getting applications through the spring.
