UNTHSC/TCOM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats!!! May I ask what your stats are, and when you were complete?

I am OOS with a decent MCAT and 3.83 sGPA and 3.9 cGPA. I sent my stuff at the end of May, but they were waiting on my 7/16 MCAT. So I would guess I would be actually complete around 8/16.

Would anyone happen to be leaving from waco for an interview for 10/7? I would be willing to split gas money. My car hasn't been the most reliable lately, so I don't want to risk it. PM me if you are interested!

There might be other folks driving through Waco on their way up, like from UT Austin, UTSA and TAMU.

Thanks, that's a good point. Well on that note, if there is anyone driving through Waco or is leaving from waco that is interviewing on oct 7, PM me if I you wouldn't mind me hitching a ride with you. I will split whatever costs are necessary.

Anyone rejection letters out there? 🙁 Caroline said "no news is good news" so I'm hoping none of us have gotten a letter!!!

Did anyone hear at their interview if they would be sending out acceptance letters before pre-match in November? I'm so anxious! :scared:

For in-state applicants who are eligible to participate in the match they are not allowed to extend offers before Nov. 15.

I don't remember specifically what they said at my TCOM interview but as far as I know all the Texas schools can offer acceptances to out-of-state students around Oct. 15.

Hey guys,

I had a random thought during one of my neurotic episodes of not having been invited to an interview yet at TCOM (I've been complete for almost 2 months).

I sent in my secondary in early July, but they didn't receive my LOR until 8/5. I was wondering if ya'll think they might have put my application to the side until they received my LOR, but never went back to re-review my application? Is this possible?

I guess I'm just super nervous! I feel like my stats are solid for the school. I'm writing a letter of interest... hopefully it gets my an invite! :xf:

Hey there.. I just found out about this school since I had no idea what TMDSAS was until a week ago. I'm guessing it's a little late to apply for this cycle right? It's so wierd that the deadline is September 30th unlike most DO schools. Should I even bother applying? I'm out of state too. My MCAT is (8 VR/10 PS/14 BS) and I have 3.5 cGPA/3.2 sGPA. And oh yea I would apply to the DO/PhD program.

Yeah its late for oos, I don't remember the deadlines but w those stats I'd give it a try if money isn't an issue. Tcom has late interviews and what's the worst that could happen? If u have the time to get everything submitted quickly tmdsas doesn't take long to complete it's the processing that takes forever.

What I heard: TCOM doesn't make a lot of offers during pre-match... most acceptances are not made until match day - 12:01 am 2/1 in TMDSAS and a hardcopy letter...

Last year's thread said they offered around 230 pre-match offers, but on the same note im sure atleast half of those applicants had multiple pre-match offers.

Ya its not smart to offer more way more prematches than you have spots in your class (see: Texas A&M last year and their crazy fiasco)

Doesn't matter when you get the acceptance as long as you get it.
Remember we will offer around 460 acceptances for a class of 230.

Quiet thread lately.... hope everyone is doing well! I'm trying to keep myself busy to avoid counting down the seconds to November 15th!!! :xf:

I hope everyone is doing great in the admissions process! I barely joined this thread yesterday, but I had to see what people were posting about my top two schools (UT Southwestern and UNT HSC). I am glad to see so many people have already had interviews! My file won't be complete until after October 11th because I took the September 8th MCAT, but I am really hoping for the best!

Now, I graduated college back in 2009, and just recently finished my Masters this past May, so I am a little out of touch with the pre-match process. To make sure I understand correctly, offers cannot be made until November 15th in Texas, and all pre-match offers must be made before December 31st, correct? I am just making sure that November isn't the cut off date for offers, because God-willing and I get offered an interview, I would hate to be on pins and needles until February!!!! :scared:

Yep, 11/15 and 2/1 are the big dates in Texas. TCOM has a FAQ on the timeline at

Hey, just a little question for anyone who knows...how long is the TCOM interview season?

Ive only been complete since 9/27 but Im so anxious to hear something...

Good luck out there

So if you interview a week for two before Nov. 15th...you could possibly get a pre-match offer on nov 15?
Or could it be anytime between nov 15th and Dec.

There should be a few interviews in January.

It's possible but odds are that if u interviewed right before prematch that u shouldn't expect to hear anything until match, unless u are a very strong applicant.

For those that have interviewed at TCOM: at what time do interviews end? Is a 5:00 flight out of there cutting it? Or should I stick with a 7:30?

Definitely 7:30. I think I was done a little before 4, and some were finished even earlier (just depends on when your interviews are scheduled). But remember that DFW is not close to the school and with Dallas traffic you should plan for over an hour commute just to get from TCOM to DFW (longer if you're going to Love). In reality it may only take 45 minutes or so, but plan for bad traffic and consider yourself lucky if there is none.

Definitely 7:30. My second interview was at 4 something... I got my interview times way before my actual interview day though, have you not gotten yours? The interviews are 45 minutes, so if your latest interview is early afternoon, you could potentially make the 5 o'clock. Some people were even done right after lunch if their interviews were both in the morning... Good luck!

My interviews are at 7:30 and 9:00. There is the Orientation at 10:30, and then Lunch and Tour at 11:30. So would I be out of there by 1?

I had the same schedule and I was gone by 1:30ish after the tour.

In that case maybe the 5pm flight would be OK. I'd call and ask Caroline though just to make sure they haven't tweaked with the agenda or anything.

I'm not sure if any current TCOM students are on this thread, but if so I was wondering what it was that made you choose TCOM over other schools, especially other allopathic schools in Texas. Also, what is it about the curriculum that you like?

Good luck to everyone interviewing there tomorrow and Friday!

i guess nobody is on so i'm going to answer
i'm 1st year at tcom. on break from studying for abig exam coming up - so you have to pardon my typing lol
i got an offer from tech el paso , but decided on tcom because of the location and reputation. i didn't want to spend 4 yrs in el paso or anywhere out ot state.
in random order:
cheap tuition
well known state school
hard to beat dfw hospitals for rotations. this is worth repeating 2x
curriculum identical to most tx schools
1st yr is cell science + gross anat + systems + clinicals
2yr is systems with pathologies and diseases in problem solving format + clinicals
lectures are very good. mostly tenured oldtimers + guest speakers from utsw
clinical/osce training is early, very thorough. teaching is outstanding here
and there is the extra omm class because it's an osteo school which is no big deal. it's actually useful and you can bill for this if you use it.
btw i thinkthere are as just about as many md's on staff/on campus as do's. in fact you might get an md for your interview.
tcom has a great record for residencies, many grads got in competitive specialties nationwide
campus located in great neighborhood. very nice homes around. worldclass museums across the street (free). in=and-out burger just opened. super target a few miles away, super walmart/sams 5 miles maybe.
exams are hard, students go out and celebrate after each exam. but faculty is open to feedback/curve
you have to study constantly and work like a dog to pass the exams.the trick is to find your own learning style that fits
note: you can remediate in the summer if you fail sometihng. tcom wants you to graduate. same as other schools
no dress code here. you can wear pajamas to class nobody cares ,except gross lab and clinical of course
caliber of students is great, very sharp.
diversity of backgrounds and majors. nontraditionals are accomplished people
most profs and staff even the cops are friendly .everyone is sociable. not a gunner atmosphere. feels like a small college
nice study rooms in new bldg for med students only

hope this helps. good luck to you all!

Thanks for the tips!

Manubrium
Where else did you apply (D.O outof state schools?)
if you don't mind sharing your stats and advice for interviews?

thanks

sure. it's 3.6, 30. nonscience maj
no out ofstate schools, just tmdsas
interviews are easy. nobody asked me any trick questions
it was more like a personality evaluation like they want to eyeball you to make sure
just relax and let them talk. when it's your turn make it somewhat interesting
i think you have >60% chance if you don't make mistakes re attire, punctuality, manners, being nerdy/ nervous/ uptight/arrogant etc so be aware but i wouldn't worry too much. be prepared but relax!

I just interviewed here today and it was an overall positive experience. I was impressed by the amount of clinical experiences that the students get here as first years. The facilities all seemed pretty new and up to date. Also, the student body seemed to be very chill and close-knit.
Both of my interviews were conversational and I wasn't nervous or intimidated at all. The questions were all pretty typical, like why medicine, why DO, and describe my activities listed on my application. I didn't get asked any ethical or health reform questions if anyone's wondering. I also spend a good amount of time during my interviews asking my interviewer questions about the school, which was very insightful. So definitely prepare some well thought-out questions to ask them.

good luck to the rest of you!

I interviewed here yesterday. It was a great experience. What I really liked was that TCOM seemed to focus on ensuring that students acquire the skills they need early on in order to succeed as a doctor. I was a little nervous before my interviews, but both of my interviewers were really nice and easy going. I didn't really get any hard ethical questions. It was mostly just going over work experience/activities and background information. My second interviewer asked more about some of the optional essays I had included on TMDSAS. He posed a dilemma and asked me how I would approach this problem. Luckily, we had talked about it in one of the clubs I am involved with in college. It was so relaxed, he even propped his feet on another chair in the room. Both went really well, and offered to walk me out the door. The interviews were a little quick, since they didn't have much left to ask me. But they gave me room to ask questions, which I asked mostly more information about who they were and how they got involved in medicine/research and UNTHSC/TCOM.

The students were very amiable, and it felt refreshing that there was major competition between the students. I was able to observe the second years in their morning lecture. It seemed really interesting. Caroline was originally going to show us the first years' lecture, but they were taking a test.

Overall, I would say my first interview experience has been really awesome. I am hoping that even with small chances of being accepted being out of state, that somehow they will want to consider me further. Good luck to those who are about to interview or are waiting on receiving an interview invite! 🙂

Anyone have any idea on the number of OOS that interview, and the number of OOS that are accepted? I see that there were 294 applications from OOS, and 19 matriculated from last year, but it could be cool to know how many get an invite/are accepted.

US News. I paid the 20 bucks or whatever for the full access. They say it's 2010 data.

Just got accepted!!! My first one!! I can officially say I'm going to be a doctor

Congratulations!! I'm so jealous I have to wait 1-4 more months...sigh.

congrats on the first wave of offers!

(if you're waiting:there are other waves and bunches to come and the fat lady doesn't sing till orientation wk. good luck!)

hey guys! any in stater's status changed from under review to your application has been reviewed? i wonder what that means!?

No, mine still says "Your application has been received. Please check your "to do" list for any outstanding items." [There are no To-Do items on my list.] How long was it from yours to go from received to under review??

Congrats on the acceptances today!!

i interviewed in september. so it took about 1-2 weeks from my application was received to it is complete (check to do list..etc) and then 1-2 weeks it said you received an interview invite... to under review..and then on oct 15 it was reviewed
