William Carey (WCU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
does this school give you any time off to study for the boards?

I passed with a slightly above average comlex score. So what am I complaining about right? I got my score because I studied other sources and "burned the candle at both ends" because of the riduculous class time requirement. WCUCOM makes getting an education more difficult than any other institution I have attended, AND No, ITS NOT B/C ITS MEDICAL SCHOOL, ITS B/C OF EXTRA OBSTACLES THEY MAKE YOU JUMP OVER. It does not have to be this way.

Texas guy you have barely gotten your feet wet in medical school, and I hate to break it to you but the stuff you are learning RIGHT NOW is very low yield for the boards look it up for yourself. Don't get too proud on us. You have been acting like you are a 4th year resident even before you got accepted. PLEASE LOOK BACK AT YOUR PREVIOUS COMMENTS. Your feelings got hurt thats why you claimed that I failed my comlex, but I forgive you.

A person is mad when they start to write in CAPS. Glad I pinched his nerve.

Everyone just ignore this person.

i have every right to express my opinion, just like you have every right to express yours. the pre-meds frequenting this forum deserve to get the full picture.
This person is a 3rd year med student here, unfortunately, who failed his/her COMLEX step 1 and is bitter about it. The time he/she used to complain about the school should have been put into studying for the boards.

Ok, first of all I'm a 2nd year not a 3rd year. If you actually read my first post before ASSuming, you would've known I wasn't a 3rd year.
In all honesty, doctoring skills and OPP meet only once a week. Spending 2-3 hours in a class is not going to kill you.

Doctoring skills is only 2 hrs in 1st year, but the 2nd year equivalent, called Clinical Science,' is a whopping 12 hrs a week. OP&P is another 4 hours every week. That’s a lot of time spent zoning out every week, and before you start saying to go study other material in class, read the previous post some guy wrote earlier about certain professors getting all worked up when you do that in their class. Even w/ professors that don’t care if you look at other material during their lecture, it’s still difficult to concentrate when you have someone talking on the mic. You’re right, every sec is valuable, which sucks all the more when hours of your time is wasted every week.
Instead of partying out on Friday nights or doing something unproductive, you could use that time to study. There is always time to study if you make time for it. Always plan ahead and don't procrastinate...it will not work in medical school.

Partying on Friday nights? You have got to be joking. And please save the high school advice for... high schoolers.
Seriously...if people knew what they were heading into, they should not come to WCUCOM or just drop out. Plain and simple. Don't come to a school that you will complain about all the time, especially here on SDN. Thank you.

Believe me, I wish I had known more about WCUCOM before I came here. Biggest mistake of my life. I’ll dropout in a heartbeat if WCUCOM will refund the $80,000 they swindled from me. So it’s ok for you to express whatever opinion you have on here, but the moment someone has a differing opinion they need to GTFO? ‘Don’t come to a school that you will complain about all the time?’ I would love to go to such a school, but unfortunately I don’t have the gift of foresight so I was unaware of how much this school really sucked.
What Adult jumps on facebook during lecture and then blames the school for their poor score?

When you pay $40K/yr something, you expect to get some return on that investment. At this point though, I’ve come to realize that how well you do on the boards is really up to you, but your institution could either help or severely hinder your performance. Thus, my biggest issue w/ WCUCOM is that they do the latter. They blatantly waste so much of our time every week w/ their ridiculous 80% required attendance policy. At this point, I don’t even care if they do a good job preparing us for the boards throughout the school year (which they don’t but that’s beside the point), I just want more free time to study for the boards on my own. This attendance policy is one of the biggest reasons why so many people in the 3rd year did so poorly on their boards.
Member 992- GET OVER YOURSELF!!!!! You act like you are the only one who is informed. YOU ARE NOT!!! If you are not happy at WCU, then please transfer !!
You do realize that transferring at this point is like trying to win the lottery right? Which is why I would strongly urge all the pre-meds to take a good look at all the comments posted here before making a final decision to go here.

makes sense........you don't make sense 🙂

It does when you realize that I deleted my original post because I broke my own personal rule of not posting when angry. For that I do apologize!

All of us involved in this have different opinions. Bottom line as I see it:

1.) The class of 2014 went thru the ringer.
2.) Corrections were made for the class of 2015
3.) These corrections helped some.
4.) More corrections will be made for the Class of 2016
5.) This cycle hopefully will continue.
6.) If the admin does NOT want to make necessary changes, then COCA will force them to.

The hatred and anger in his post seems like his nerve got pinched.

Should have left during first year instead of staying for second. The rule of hole digging is that if you're in a hole, stop digging. Going to school everyday must suck for him.

Were there any other acceptance offers to you during your medical school admission process?

I remember sitting in a foxhole in the middle of nowhere eating my MRE knowing how suck it is to be here at the moment, but a opportunity of knowing so many wonderful people and a chance to better life and serving our country bring a smile to me.

Now, here I am, sitting here contemplating which medical school I should choose because of the multiple acceptance. I know medical school is suck also, but knowing what I will become afterward give me a big smile.

So all those whom are complaining, will you be happy with WCU-COM medical diploma that will be with you for the rest of your life?

If you going to complain about WCU, can you give me the reason why you choose this school in the first place.

I do not know if you realize this but student from other university is laughing at WCU-COM. I went through the interviewing process and interacting with medical student from other campus. Maybe it will not affect you now, but how about your residency interview where this negative image can have an impact on accepting you. School reputation is very important.

Never judge a situation based on a few stories. There will always be students that feel other schools are inferior and in the end a degree from WCU is just as valuable as a degree from any other DO school in the country.

Well, I've heard these doom and gloom stories in person from other students, but am alarmed that complaints of this nature continue to manifest.

Anyway, McLovinsFSARA, you stated above that a significant number of WCU-COM students did poorly on the Comlex step 1. Do you mind expanding on that? Please PM me if you don't find it appropriate to post about that in this thread, as I don't think that's the purpose of this particular thread.

Something to think about, that's for sure. I'm getting more and more eager to see this school's first match.

Got the call from Dr. Weir about hour and half ago. Accepted. Now have to decide which school is best for me.

For those invited to complete the secondary, what was the time frame between your primary release and invitation to complete the secondary? I was complete on Nov 8th and just curious about the turn-around time for the secondary email (if invited).

about one week for me.

Congrats for those who have been accepted! Do you mind sharing when you were complete, ii, etc. and your stats?

I submitted my secondary 11/1 and still haven't heard back except that my application is complete :/

how long do we have to make the decision if accepted yesterday? Dec. 15 or Jan. 15???? When do we need to pay $3000? Just wondering.`

This would be an excellent question to email to Dr. Weir or Emily.
I'm pretty sure you need to pay the deposit by the same time frame you have to make the decision. But I'd double check with the office at WCUCOM

Ok, any tips on getting on the radar for an II? I sent in my secondary 11/1 and have heard nothing except my application is complete. I know it hasn't been that long, but it seems they email out II fairly quickly. Should I call them and ask about my status? I feel I would be competitive with my stats...

MCAT 10 VR, 9 BS, 8 PS
cGPA 3.4
sGPA 3.25
Great ECs

Never mind, ii 1/11/13. FIRST ii! SO EXCITED!

Congrats on your interview. Have you decided on a date yet? Students in the welcoming committee here at WCUCOM will be more than happy to answer your questions at lunch before your interview. Good luck!

Thanks! I didn't have a choice, so I guess it's gonna be January 11. I will definitely fill out the sheet for the welcoming committee. I want to learn as much about this school as I can.

I have an interview on Dec. 3. I sent the Welcoming Committee form, requesting to, possibly, stay with a student while there, and to speak with someone that is married and/or has children. How long before someone contacts me? I sent the form the day after I got my invitation. Thanks.

You should be contacted by a student soon! Congrats on the interview!

i interviewed at this school a couple of weeks ago and talked to some of the students. one of their complaints was that the dean was a power control freak and did things his own way even against the recommendations of the accrediting boards. that's pretty scary.

CRC professional,

please research the following
1.) Chapman's points
2.) pelvic counter strain
3.) liver quiver
4.) pelvic diaphragm OMT
5.) ischial tuberosity lateral release
6.) AGR (area of greatest restriction)

Why look this up? Because if you think this is something you want to be caught doing by your MD attending 3rd, 4th year, or during residency you are on the right track.

I guess it's understandable after serving the US Navy for 26 years, and then became Vice Chair for the American Osteopathic Association’s Council on Postdoctoral Training.

Last time I checked, the above ^, does not give you the right to take advantage of the ones you are supposed to serve, and believe me that is a nice way to put it. Lets remember whose debt is paying the salaries. We are not here on a full paid scholarship. My point, which I will continue to make until major changes take place, is this: Since we are the source of this school's income, we should have a major SAY SO in the curriculum, attendance policy, board study, etc. Yes, the requests and changes should be in line with the recommendations/ guidelines of COCA but that is a no brainer. These changes may not effect me, but they should be honored ASAP. As of now, the current policies at WCUCOM border on thievery!

You may not be aware of this, but a lot of changes are happening. We actually had a curriculum meeting a few weeks ago with the dean of academic affairs. The meeting consisted of several students and the dean, and she listened to and took notes of our ideas and suggestions. It was a "brainstorming" session of how we could make the school better. Certain class reps also have a meeting with the dean each month to discuss things that are concerning to us. Along with that, each class now has a member of the curriculum committee that will vote on changes. This means we have a direct voice in important decisions that could affect us. We are steadily making progress, and WCU COM is changing to satisy COCA and the students. As far as the attendance policy is concerned, you know coming to the school that we have an attendance policy. They tell you this at your interview. If you are absolutely against an attendance policy then maybe you should consider another school. I personally don't have a problem with the attendance policy, but if I did I wouldn't constantly complain about it. Again, I KNEW WHEN I INTERVIEWED/ACCEPTED A SEAT THAT WCU COM HAD AN ATTENDANCE POLICY! You all have to remember that there are pros and cons of every school that exists, just like there are pros and cons of every specialty/job/hospital that is in your future. You have to decide which school you will fit best with. For me, that was without a doubt WCU COM. I have NEVER regretted my decision to come to this school and I will be proud to be a graduate from the DO program.

Anyone that is in charge is going to have their own ways of doing things. He can't go against the accrediting agency or WCU COM will not get accredited. He is working to put his own touch on the school while abiding by COCA regulations. Since the last COCA meeting in August, changes have already taken affect. The dean and the rest administration is working hard to follow COCA regulations and develop the school to where it needs to be.

Hey! We recieved your survey today and you should have heard from us this morning. We look forward to meeting you soon 🙂

Personally, I think that it is exciting to be part of something new, having the opportunity to be a part of the changes that will make the school great for those that follow. Surely, it is understood that with anything new, that it is not perfect, from the beginning. I think that people should not complain, but instead take action to make change. There are so many people that do not make it into med school that would be happy to be in such a situation.
I have not made it there yet, but hope that I can keep a positive attitude toward the whole process. Challenges and hardships can only benefit you, if you keep on course with a positive attitude.
I am excited. None of the negative comments will effect my decision to go to WCUCOM, if/when I am accepted.
I look forward to meeting students like you.

Can you please provide me current first year schedule. Also, what change is expected for next year? Will it be more reduced week hours or reduced mandatory attendance from 80 to 70 or 60?

For changes, there probably will be no reduction on attendance policy. However, one of the changes they made for current OMS II's is to have more white space (time not in class, but noted as "self study hours"). The WCU undergrad is what is in control of attendance policy. They require 80% attendance, and the COM has an agreement to adhere to the undergrad attendance policy. It's not necessarily the COM's fault that there is 80% attendance. For the record, there are other medical schools with 85% attendance policies, and some with 100% unless you are dying type attendance. So, WCUCOM is not that bad with attendance.

Very well said!!! I am so thrilled that we have people with such great attitudes interested in our school!! I look forward to hearing from you soon! Be soon to fill our your survey when you get an interview! 🙂

Can you please provide me current first year schedule. Also, what change is expected for next year? Will it be more reduced week hours or reduced mandatory attendance from 80 to 70 or 60?

This is the OMS 1 schedule from this semester :
Histology - Mon,Wed,Friday 2 hrs a day
Gross Anatomy Lecture - Mon,Wed,Thu 2 hrs a day
Gross Lab - Mon, Wed, Thu 3 hrs a day
Embryo/genetics - Thu, Fri 2 hrs a day
Doctoring skills - Friday for 2 hrs
OP&P - Tuesday for four hrs

Keep in mind that we usually get out early if the professors finish their material (often). I'm not positive of next semesters schedule, but I think it is a little less class time. Like she said, they have cleared up space in the 2nd years schedules for COMLEX study time.

Will WCUCOM reduce the class hours for next year? 28 hours is a killer... but they do have good clinical sites. 🙂
