William Carey (WCU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
OldBusdriver.....I am 37 and second career. Keep your foot on the gas and good luck!!

Congrats! You deserve it! Still waiting here too..

Thank you! I emailed Mrs. Donna to ask how will an acceptance be given, i.e. phone, email, regular mail. She told me to call Dr. Weir and he told me I was accepted. He said letters of acceptance will go out in tomorrow's mail. Good luck to yall!!

Is it better to email and check on your status or wait for them to contact you? I have been complete for a few weeks now.

Tried to call today about acceptance or whatnot and was told they would be sending out letters and that Dr. Weir was out of the office today.

They're very friendly and helpful if you call. It never hurts to call and find out where you stand! Email works, too 🙂 Good luck!

You can email Dr. Weir, if you would like to do so. He usually replies very quickly. Hang in there, he may be back in the office tomorrow!

Hi guys! I interview in a week. Can anyone who has already been to the interview give me the run down of the interview day and some info on the interview itself? Also, what hotels did you guys stay at? I appreciate it! 🙂

First is a presentation about the COM and financial aid. Then a tour of the campus followed by lunch with the OMS1 students. After that is your individual interviews with 3 interviewers. Straightforward questions. One ethical question. Why osteopathic medicine? Why WCU? Standard stuff. Very relaxed and everyone on campus will stop and talk to you.

Sorry. No info on hotels. 🙂

I stayed at the one in the email, Baymont.
If money isn't an object they have Hiltons and such around there too.

Congrats to all those accepted!!! Might be a good time to start a FB group.

Hope that those who are interviewing will get their questions answered. Make sure that you talk to the OMS I & II's. We will not be hard to find and we will be glad to answer any questions that you have.

Thanks for the info! I hope it's not too stressful since I have no experience interviewing except for jobs lol

Baymont it is then, I am so cheap I would sleep in my car if I could but no bathroom is a problem lol.

Hey everyone,

First off, congratulations to those who received interviews or have been accepted. You will love the school despite the bad rumors out there about WCUCOM. The fact that they only interview a few students per session shows how much they care about trying to know you as a person and not just as an interviewee. If you get an interview, you are one foot in the COM doors. Just remain calm as the interviewers just want to know you and if you are a good fit for the school. Most likely no gotcha questions or an interviewer out on a vendetta. Speak truthfully and be as genuine as possible. Hopefully I will be able to meet some of you during the lunch break before the interview.

For those who are still waiting to hear about interview invites, WCUCOM interview until April 15. So hang in there and continue to update the admissions office with any new information.

Best of luck everyone! Feel free to message me with questions and I will answer them as soon as possible. :luck:

Try asking Emily Bennett about staying with a medical student. The welcoming committee here at school might be able to help you find a medical student host to stay with.

If not, stay at a hotel West of highway 59 which tends to be in the safer side of town.

Can anyone comment more on the curriculum and the mandatory attendance? I will be there in more than a week.

The attendance policy is 80% for most of the courses. Some classes like OPP and doctoring skills are 100%. It makes sense for these classes to be 100% because if you miss one, then you basically miss a whole course since they only meet once a week.

The OMS-1 curriculum for first semester is mainly anatomy, histology, OPP, embryology/genetics, and doctoring skills. The majority of your time for first semester will be spent in gross anatomy and histology because these two courses are where the majority of your credits come from.

Second semester will be more science courses like biochemistry, physiology, neuroanatomy, etc.

Here is my honest opinion regarding the attendance policy. There will be people complaining about it all the time. However, just remember that what you put into your medical education is what you get out of it. You can make the best of your time by showing up to class and study for another course. Every minute in medical school is valuable and should not be wasted on complaints.

Thanks! About how long after we are 'complete' should we begin to follow up about our status? I hate to bug, but I also want to be on top of things because following up does bring your application to the forefront since they are handling so many.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they don't tell you when you're complete. You don't get a secondary unless you get an interview. So even if you do follow up after your AACOMAS has been released, they'll just tell you that your app is still under review. I submitted my primary over 2 months ago and didn't hear back about a secondary/interview, so I followed up on it and this is what i was told. :/

Hmmm. I submitted my secondary and followed up to make sure they got it at the end of last week. I've been corresponding a little with Donna Day to make sure they have my LORs. So, I guess my application is not complete yet, and I definitely haven't received any confirmation, but I know they got it last week.

They don't send out a complete email. you just need to make sure that they receive all of your materials before it gets too late in the cycle. Got to be an active applicant during the cycle.

So when you received your secondary, did you also get an ii?

Not as of yet. I will be following up this week to make sure they received my LORs through Virtual Eval.
Interesting. I haven't gotten any ii or secondary. I guess they screen more than other schools. Usually most people get a secondary and then a few get iis. Different case here

I've submitted my secondaries fairly recently, so I'm still playing the waiting game 🙂. My stats are in my profile, if you're curious. You can always follow up and see what your status is, I don't think that hurts. The worst thing they can tell you is that they're still evaluating your app.

You don't get an II when you get a secondary. You also do not receive a completed email. BUT the reviewing process must be fairly quick since I snail mailed my secondary on a Wednesday and got an II over email the following Tuesday.

Well, that's what I'm trying to figure out. I submitted my primary AACOMAS over 2 months ago but never received a secondary from this school, but did from many other schools, and when I followed up on it, all i heard was that they were still reviewing materials. That's what makes me wonder about this school's process. What are your stats (pm me if you prefer)

I know they have a regional bias. I'll PM you

There is a regional bias, but it's not restricted....I'm from Oklahoma...We also have people from California, Arizona, Maryland, and other states. Give the office a call and ask what your status is. Best of luck

The wait for a decision is killing me! 🙂

Accepted. Got the letter in snail mail today! So excited to be here!

what kind of lunch do they give you during the interview?

It doesn't make sense for any class to be 100% attendance. I tune out every lecture I go to, esp the ones for doctoring skills & OPP+lab. I'm not sure why you're trying to spread this myth that you have to attend classes to learn.

I'm pretty sure going to lecture and studying for another class is one of the most ******ed ways to study & definitely not the best use of time. It's highly inefficient and quite hard to concentrate most of the time. Esp. if the person giving the lecture is screaming through a microphone (believe me you will want to strangle some professors). Every sec is valuable and should not be wasted on complaints about complaints.

"You can make the best of your time by showing up to class and study for another course. Every minute in medical school is valuable and should not be wasted on complaints."

Sounds like a waste of 38,000 dollars because you won't even be absorbing as much. IT SHOULD BE CLEAR THAT WHAT YOU ARE SAYING IS TO STUDY FOR ONE CLASS WHILE IN THE LECTURE OF ANOTHER. This is actually frowned upon by many professors, and STUDENTS HAVE BEEN CALLED OUT FOR THIS IN THE MIDDLE OF CLASS. Your sugar coating may lure some applicants in, but I can assure you that many have seen the light and have made a better choice. If the student body here could come together and demand changes now not later then the school will improve faster than by running us through like test subjects. Let me guess, if the students had control they would just party and go out and mess around......now we are adults now (hopefully) are our scores would improve drastically or at least the majority would. Know that the students complained about not having enough time to study and warned of low board scores at the very beginning of classes at WCUCOM. As a 1st and 2nd year, do you know what I saw people in class doing........Facebook, Espn, SHOPPING, in otherwords screwing around. Here is the reason for some of this. I'll try to study in here..........can't do that because i can't concentrate.........I'll listen to the lecture.........i can't rewind what he just said and board review sources are better in most cases...........I can't do anything............I'll get on facebook because that takes very little concentration. Wow you just wasted 5 hours, when you could have been watching board review videos, reading First Aid, memorizing, internalizing.......But the administration PURELY DOES NOT CARE or at least the ones that matter don't. Look at the board scores for evidence........ITs a new school .....Its a new school......guess what........The concept of medical education IS NOT NEW

TEXAS GUY STOP BEING SO NAIVE AND START BEING TRANSPARENT

What Adult jumps on facebook during lecture and then blames the school for their poor score?

Everyone just ignore this person. This person is a 3rd year med student here, unfortunately, who failed his/her COMLEX step 1 and is bitter about it. The time he/she used to complain about the school should have been put into studying for the boards.

In all honesty, doctoring skills and OPP meet only once a week. Spending 2-3 hours in a class is not going to kill you. Instead of partying out on Friday nights or doing something unproductive, you could use that time to study. There is always time to study if you make time for it. Always plan ahead and don't procrastinate...it will not work in medical school.

Seriously...if people knew what they were heading into, then they should not have come to WCUCOM or just drop out. Plain and simple. Don't come to a school that you will complain about all the time, especially here on SDN. Thank you.

I passed with a slightly above average comlex score. So what am I complaining about right? I got my score because I studied other sources and "burned the candle at both ends" because of the riduculous class time requirement. WCUCOM makes getting an education more difficult than any other institution I have attended, AND No, ITS NOT B/C ITS MEDICAL SCHOOL, ITS B/C OF EXTRA OBSTACLES THEY MAKE YOU JUMP OVER. It does not have to be this way.

Texas guy you have barely gotten your feet wet in medical school, and I hate to break it to you but the stuff you are learning RIGHT NOW is very low yield for the boards look it up for yourself. Don't get too proud on us. You have been acting like you are a 4th year resident even before you got accepted. PLEASE LOOK BACK AT YOUR PREVIOUS COMMENTS. Your feelings got hurt thats why you claimed that I failed my comlex, but I forgive you.
