endodontic residency 2021 application

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks but I'm batting 2/19 so far, so nothing to brag about lol

They sent me an email today around 4pm, 30min interviews are being held 9:30am-3pm with a 1 hour lunch, so I estimate 10 applicants are going to be interviewed. For how many spots, I have no idea
Good Luck on your interview on 07/23.

Let me be very candid: this cycle applications have doubled. In some cases more than double. This will be a very competitive cycle for all specialties across the board. Especially, Endo, OS, and Peds.

Why those three specialities in particular?

Best Post-Residency lifestyle/income as people come out of practice. Relatively immune to recessions. Corporate dentistry always needs them so there will it’s always a high paying gig in any part of the country. Outside of these three (ortho used to be as well), I think it’s a difficult road that few are able to climb towards “that dentist life” that many entered Dentistry in order to attain.

Endo resident here. We all talk, directors talk. I know we went from 83-150, Iowa went to 200, A&M went to 260. So those schools all significantly increased. It’s fair to assume others did as well. No clue why the huge jump. I was told it’s students still in school or about 1 year out, and also foreign trained applicants that led to the biggest increase.

Hope you don't mind me asking - what program are you at?

Do y’all (directors/ residents) look at this forum? Lol

First, I am not top ten in my class (upper half), didn't crush the ADAT(550), and my gpa(3.6) is good but nothing that will turn heads. Well I have the benefit of seeing those programs last year and I visited some other programs this year. Oddly enough, I'm not applying to any of the ones I saw last year as I didn't get the vibe that I added much to sway any of them. I was planning on going to the AAE conference, paid and flight booked, but alas COVID happened. My point was that really comes down showing the initiative to some folks and them just getting one on one vs you competing with everyone else on interview day. I was going to apply to many more but I got a very good vibe and applied to less 😉

CBSE weeds out lots of mediocre applicants for OMFS. Unlikely there will be a significant increase in OMFS applicants, because most will not have taken the CBSE in time to apply this cycle. Thankful that exam exists to filter out the riffraff.
I agree moving forward all specialties will become more competitive. Ortho is on the decline, for sure.

Does anybody know if NYU Langone has filled their class yet?

For NYU Langone, do they interview for the Brooklyn and Puerto Rico sites together? Cuz I know the Brooklyn one sent out invites, but I didn't know if that included Puerto Rico or not.

Congratulations to everyone who has gotten acceptances so far!!
Does anyone know if Harvard has given out interview invites already? I saw on last year's thread that they apparently interviewed on July 12 and July 19.

I received an interview, but no luck so far. I think due to the increased number of applicants this cycle, it's going to be that much harder to get accepted straight out of school. But stay optimistic! Only about half the programs have sent out invites.
Do you mind sharing your interview experience? What did they ask you? Thanks

For those who interviewed with NYU Langone-Brooklyn, did you hear back from them after the interview or any offers extended? Also, do they have other rounds of interviews?

Wishing everyone the best of luck!
I found an old post of interview questions (I think from 2015) to be very helpful in practicing/ calming my nerves. I thought I would update with recent questions.
In my interview they asked:

Tell us about yourself.
What are some qualities that you have that would set you apart as a good resident?
Tell us about a time you had a disagreement with someone.
Why do you want to do Endo?
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
If you could go to dinner with anyone in history who would it be and why?
What’s your biggest accomplishment?
How will you take care of the underserved community?
Are you active in organized dentistry?
Tell us about your research experience.
What questions do you have about the program?
