They didn't like me so much- post-sec. rejection from BU.
 
/rejected via email yesterday...i wonder how many interviews they give out per spots available. i know in the email they said they get 100 applications per seat in the class. the first rejection is definately the most painful...here were my stats for anyone interested

3.69gpa, 31q, class president 2 yrs, class treasurer 1, loads of volunteer/shadow experience, study abroad...blah...blah...blah

I think the info that the dean of admissions gave us on the first day of orientation was: around 11,000 applicants, around 1,000 interviewed, around 350-400 accepted, 178 students matriculated, no waitlist movement, class bigger than expected

178?! That does seem like way more than they anticipated.

It is...we are the largest class in BU history I believe, but also with the highest stats. That is the reason why less people will be interviewed and accepted this year.

The Committee on Admissions of Boston University School of Medicine has completed its review of your application. It is with great regret that I inform you that we will be unable to offer an interview this year. This is a disappointment, as much for those who are responsible for the decision as it may be for you, the candidate who is turned away.

Most of the candidates we are considering this year are qualified to attend medical school and are likely to make important contributions to our profession and to society. Sadly, with more than 100 applicants for every seat in the class, we are forced to deny many exceptional people.

We acknowledge and respect your accomplishments and recognize that our inability to offer you an opportunity to complete the admissions process is a loss for Boston University. Please accept our best wishes for all your future endeavors.

I'm posting the same post that I put down in the rejection thread for those of you who are interested:

I cannot speak on the ideas of admissions, but I will tell you what I think from being at BU so far. Our class (2012) is the largest in the history because more people accepted the seat in the class than they expected. We also have the highest stats in the history of BU, I think, with a GPA of around 3.75-3.8, and MCAT of around 34-35. A LOT of people apply to BU, around 11,000 applicants a year. In truth, there are around 115-120 available seats in every class because BU has already filled seats with students from their 7 year program, and 2 other programs from the undergrad campus. In terms of GPA and MCAT...yes, I think they do screen because they get so many applicants but what I think they do right away is try to see if you will be a fit at BU. If you have a 4.0 GPA and 45 MCAT, I doubt that they'll reject you right away, but yes, they may, because they don't want to waste time and money on applicants who they know will get in somewhere better and will not come to BU. That whole idea sucks but it's true with many of the schools...when I was applying last year, I did not get interviews at some of the schools that I considered "safeties" (if there is such a thing for a med school) while getting interviews at places that are more of a reach.

Anyways, being a good fit for BU is important, which mostly means, how do you feel being on the wards where 51% of the population that you serve are foreign-born? Do you have any usual outside exposures, rather than just the usual work in the ER. We have the largest Level I trauma in New England, and we're next to two towns where shootings and murders are considered almost everyday events. Also, BU prides itself on students who are good communicators. Have you shown somehow that you are good at communicating? Of course, that is best seen during interviews, which play a very important part in the admissions process. For those people who will end up interviewing at BU, they will understand me better when they actually come here and see what goes on here for themselves.

As for those who have been rejected, I understand your frustration. I was rejected at many schools last year, but everything turned out great, and for almost all of you, the same will happen. As the last note, when I was going down the elevator today, I heard the converstation of 2 administrators that consisted of "The **** hit the fan today bcause the son for one of the main lawyers for BU was rejected last night." So, you're not the only ones. Good luck this year and please let me know if you have any other questions.

which ones are those?
 
Anyone know if the 2000 character limit includes spaces? I'm only at 330 words and already over the 2000 limit if you include spaces.
 
in character limits, spaces are included 99% of the time. also, the count that word gives you is an underestimate of what the app will give you
 
Thanks, that's what I figured but since my word count was so low I thought BUs app might have been different.

Yeah, BU's rejection was one of the nicer ones I've gotten so far. Indiana's came off as pretty douchey.

I received an interview from BU today. Did anyone else??

o man. BU tens to look for a "fit" and maybe saying that you'd be in the area implied that you were looking at other schools.. and that was a turnoff? Who knows?

I'm still waiting to hear .. :crosses fingers:
 
LOR question:

So I've been complete at BU since 7/30. However, a science prof who has been out of town for months just got back to me and still wants to write me a letter. I want to forward this letter to BU, but if I indicate on AMCAS that I want this letter sent to BU, will BU put a hold on reviewing my app?

Congrats guys! Even though I haven't been at BU for a long time, I love it here so far, hopefully you will too during your interview. Let me know if you have any questions about anything.

I did this also, and got an interview invite, but only for dates a week BEFORE when I said I'd be there....weird. I can't figure out if they were too busy to notice or if they want to test my commitment??
 
I was also invited, I scheduled the interview for the 17th.
 
Did anyone get an interview WITHOUT writing the optional essay? I'm wondering if the reason I haven't gotten an interview is because I didn't do the optional essay.
 
I don't know, I wrote one, it was nothing extravagant....I got an interview. Whether the two events are linked is anyone's guess.

Hi...I also got an interview invite without doing the optional essay. Scheduled it for early october... good luck to all those still waiting.
 
I did the optional essay and I'm pretty sure I'd have been rejected if I hadn't
 
Most of the people who got interviews have pretty amazing stats.

I definitely don't have amazing stats (embarrassed enough to take down my MDApps)...and got an interview. So who knows what they're looking for. I did do the optional essay though
 
Hi all,

For some reason this didn't post, so sorry if it comes up later as a repeat, but my BU secondary was complete on 8/13, and people who were complete after that date have already heard back. Any thoughts? Do they not put anyone on hold and just straight reject?

I scheduled mine for the 17th as well.

Did you find a place to stay? I checked and like every hotel on their list is booked already - I think there is a Celtics game that night. Since the day starts so early, I did not want to stay that far outside the city. Thanks.

I am scheduled for the 17th as well - havent looked for a place to stay just yet...any suggestions? (especially if the hotels listed are already booked)

Little early for basketball I think. Just so you know, public transportation in and around Boston is pretty good and reliable. It also gets going early (~6 AM for most types of transit). If you can't find one near BU then don't be too hesitant to find a hotel further away. Just plan your trip with enough time to get there obviously.
 
I believe that we also have a service that you can stay the night with a current medical student. I would suggest calling the admissions office and asking them about it. I'm not fully sure about that yet as we have a meeting about admissions on September 17th.
