I interviewed at Buffalo mid September and got accepted. The interview was very relaxed. Most of the questions were about my application- they pretty much asked me about everything that was there. I also got some 'what would you do if...' kind of questions, but nothing too crazy.

I loved the school atmosphere: very relaxed, non-competitive and fun. There were various opportunities to take advantage of and a lot of people who were willing to help. I got the impression that Buffalo was going through a lot of changes after the curriculum update and it is becoming more competitive. (4000 primary applications submitted before Sept. 15).

Good luck to everyone!

thanks emilylime! I interview this Wednesday!! ahhhh (My frist interview 🙂)

Just got an interview invite!!!! 😛 Was complete late august/beginning of September...

Jefferson did the same thing to me, invited for an interview with a set date, but then when I asked them, they said I can choose a different date if it doesn't work for me...I don't know about Buffalo...should I change the date or should I stick with it...still thinking.

AAAAA!!!! Just got Einstein invite....today is oficially my lucky day #2!!!!:hardy:

They do favor IS, but I wouldn't call it "huge." Using the US News numbers, last year they accepted 13.9% of IS applicants, and 3.7% of OOS. If you want to see "huge" IS preference, look at schools like Kansas (accepted 40.8% IS/3.2% OOS) or even NJ Med (they accept about 27% of IS, and 1% of OOS).

As an NY resident, I don't know why the SUNYs don't show the same preference for IS students as other state schools.

They get over 3500 IS applications filled out, so if they were to offer seats to 40% of those that applied, they would have to offer up 1400 seats for a class of 135...

I think you are misunderstanding either what I said or the stats you quoted...UB gives more 'points' if you will to someone that is a NY resident than they do to someone who is not a NY resident. That doesn't mean they accept half the residents who apply...those Kansas numbers are reflecting that Kansas doesn't have that many in state applicants, and those they do they tend to take. Accepting 3.7% of all OOS applicants versus accepting 3.2% of all OOS applicants is negligible when you want to talk about your odds. Kansas and UB are accepting roughly the same percentage of all the OOS people who fill out the app. The reason the Kansas numbers seem so high is that they only have a handful of applicants for those seats compared to much more populated states with more people pursuing medicine, and many more applications filled out overall. Also, NJ doesn't take anyone in essence from OOS, so it's also not the best example to use- some schools don't even really consider OOS applicants, such as some FL schools, so if you know they don't even look at the app it's sort of dumb to consider that as a school to apply to.

You don't want to look at how many total IS applicants they accept out of how many that applied if you want to understand if they favor IS over OOS. I don't know the stats that they sent in to US News, but I'll use the makeup of the class to explain: 140 kids in the class, with 27 being OOS. so that means that 80.7% of the class is from the state of NY, with the other 19.3% being from somewhere else (Cali and the east coast are highly represented, with very very few from anywhere else).

I would consider 80% of a class being from IS favoring NY residents, especially if you consider some other state schools. The Cali schools don't give that good of a preference for their own residents, and also neither does say U of Michigan, even though it's a true state school. NY kids have a pretty good selection of state schools that give them preference, plus a ton of privates that somewhat select from IS applicants since they know they are more likely to attend. Plus the state school tuition in NY is amazing, especially considering that all the state schools are pretty well regarded for residency, whereas some smaller state schools (ie Kansas) don't have the resources to really catch the eye of a residency director say if you wanted to move to NYC or to Cali for your residency.

soo...talk about a surprise when I interviewed today and they told us we will be getting their decision by tomorrow night! Apparently they meet right after everyone's interview and the decision's made the same day. They update it online the day after and we get an official letter within 10 days....AHHH

Good luck! Yeah, I hear they deliberate right after the interviews. I think this actually makes a TON of sense. I think it is important for the interviewer to have you frsh in their mind when they make a case for you.

How did you like Buffalo? Sorry I did not respond to your info request; I just saw your post.

oh don't worry about it. As for Buffalo. the campus itself didn't impress me that much. However, the staff and students seemed very nice and willing to help. I don't know how my interview went, one of the prof that interviewed me was kinda tough.
BTW, during my second interview, he had my folder open and on the inside of the cover, there was a white page with what seemed to be lines of questions and they had numbers (like scores) next to them. At the bottom of the page there was a total score written big and circled. Is that my chance of getting in?! I got like a 40 :uhno:

Don't worry about it too much. I highly doubt it is out of 100, or even 50. Plus, all other members of the adcom will have a say combined with your interviewers. Pay no attention to the numbers. They will only cause stress.

It is like the MCAT. Unless you know how it is graded, a 40 would sound horrible. 🙂

lol thanks for the boost of confidence. I do have to admit, considering the topic of just about every thread right now is on hearing news of acceptance/rejection, it's nice to know I wouldn't have to go through the waiting. it just means I'll have 1 sleepless night instead of 30. =].

has anyone been rejected from buffalo pre-interview or are they just leaving people hanging

I received an e-mail saying that I was put in the intermediate pool which stated that I could move into the interview pile or rejection pile as the year continues.

i have received nothing ... i just wish they could tell me my status! it says NO ACTION on my current status ... sigh

I'd imagine that you should probably be hearing soon since you were complete a little bit after me. I am still bummed about my outcome, I wish you luck.

thanks! i looked at your profile, nice stats, that is probably why they didn't interview you ... coz they figured you'd get in somewhere else and not go there. i'm wishing you good luck for this to turn into an invite and for an acceptance at one of the places you already interviewed at!

Thanks, very kind of you... we shall hope for just one, because that's all it takes! Again, best of luck to you, I'm sure time will serve you well.

Yeah...I am interviewing on the 19th. I am really excited about the fact that they tell you if you are accepted/rejected/waitlisted I think within like 24-48 hrs.:beat:<---i put this because I think it is funny. It does not really make sense in this case though.

Word an sdn party. Hopefully both of us will be celebrating lol after that day..........

I too am interviewing this Wednesday! Is there any way to get advanced notice on who your interviewers will be (i.e. names)?

I'm not sure but I don't think so. I remember when I went, they just had all of our files in a pile and while you are eating lunch, the interviewers just grab whichever file that's on top of the pile and sit in another room to review it before interviewing you.

I don't know if that is true. My interviewer told me that he spent the previous night online looking into questions he could ask me about my research. My interviewer was also a physiologist so he shot of TONS of technical questions about how X drug would affect the body and have Y outcome. I guess I wasn't expecting that; every interview I have had thus far has only been about the content of my application.

oh ok, I wasn't sure. Maybe they were just reviewing our apps again before the interview

Wow--that sounds pretty scary 😕😕!!! How'd you make out? It seems like the interviews at Buffalo are amongst the more difficult and thought-provoking ones. Wish me luck! 😍

Good luck!!!! It actually went very well. I was accepted the next day. He only asked me technical questions about my research. I do reserach on a trauma unit and for example, he asked me "why give lactated ringers solution to a patient that has a large wound that requires surgery and why wouldnt you give regular ringers solution to someone without a large wound?"
The answer was (and I almost got the answer correct after walking through it with him) is "if you lose a lot of blood and require a large amount of fluid (such is the case with a large wound), you would use lactated ringers because lactate is a buffer solution at a pH or appx 7.4 (the pH of blood). Because pts with large wounds usually need a lot of fluid, giving someone unbuffered fluid would change the pH of their blood greatly. Giving someone who needs lots of fluid buffered fluid would not change the pH of their blood greatly". And that was only one of the physiology questions I was asked!!!

I honetly think this is an anomoly though. Everyone else I spoke with did not get these kinds of questions. It was probably because I was paired with a physiologist. Just be yourself, know your reseach (and maybe a few extra background details about it). It is okay not to know every answer. I just said "I dont know, I never encountered that situation" to a few. He explained the answer and we spoke about the situation for a while. It will be okay!!! My best advice is to try to remain calm and very conversational. GOOD LUCK!!!!

I'm still in the land of "no action."

Bummer. By this time last year I had interviewed already. And been subsequently waitlisted, but that's another story.

I had a physiologist interview me last year, and he didn't ask a single physio related question! Maybe y'all had a different guy. He could have quizzed me on stuff (especially related to my research) but I escaped unscathed. I do remember talking about Thomas Jefferson, though. Clearly, something important to discuss in a med school interview.

I just interviewed there. It was so much more than what I expected...I really liked it

hey sakond i just interviewed there today too. Who were u? Pm me. I am trying to put a name with a face.

Hey guys, I interviewed at Buffalo today too 😉 And I think I figired out both of you, haha 🙂 I think I actually talked to both of you 🙂

lol yeah violet? i was the kid with the third interview. I really cant figure out who u were. i did talk to quite a few peeps tho.

yeah, that's what i thought 🙂 well, if i give you a hint it'd be too easy 🙂 but anyway, we had the same interviewer 😉
how did your third interview go? were you the last one to leave?

wait which one the student or the faculty member? Because there were two girls that i talked to that had the same interviewers as me. Lol did u have that 2nd year medical student? or maybe ur talking about the internist.

a second year student 🙂

lol i know who u are. Good luck to u. No i was done when u came back from ur interview. The day was nice just a little dragged out. What did u think

hey fellow interviewees--i interviewed today with you guys all also. i was the tall kid who answered "cockroach" when Mr. Rosso was talking about the Hiroshima bomb...haha. nice to meet you guys today...long day, but very enjoyable overall. just got back to NYC. i couldn't help myself and i just went to the interview status check page and they moved me from "interview on wed. 11/19" (which is what it's said for the past couple of weeks) back to "no action." what about you guys?

Wow...I thought I was the only neurotic one. Guess not.

I was soooo impressed with Buffalo, especially Mr. Rosso he was enthusiastic about everything and really wanted to make sure that we were a good fit in Buffalo.

Haha...def. not the only neurotic one. I really enjoyed the school too. Mr. Rosso was probably amongst the nicest/happiest people I've ever met in my life, and likewise he gave me a great impression of the school. Dean Severin also really seemed extremely passionate about his job; you could tell he really cares about his students, and I like that a lot. I would love to go there. Good luck, all! And remember, wait list = hope @ Buff.!

Yeah... An outright acceptance would obviously be nice but WL sounds like you still have a great chances especially if you are near the top (top 1/3)

Did anyone find out how many people they will accept outright (from the ppl that interviewed today) on average?

I would be shocked if it was 1/5 that they accepted because it sounds like they really want to give everyone who will be interviewing a shot before they make their decision.

On that note, is buffalo rolling admissions?

Yeah, that I'm not so sure about. Unfortunately, you're probably right in assuming they don't accept too many students outright, but I do think it's rolling admissions. Whatever though, there's no point in stressing about anything now...the hard part is long over, and our judgments have already been cast! 😱

lol i know who u are. Good luck to u. No i was done when u came back from ur interview. The day was nice just a little dragged out. What did u think

thanks 🙂 good luck to you too. i also enjoyed the day a lot. school, faculty and students definitely exceeded my expectations...my status page says no action, i guess we'll have to wait till tomorrow or friday...
