has anyone heard anything yet today? i interviewed 12/12 in the afternoon and nothing so far...ahh

Just called Cincinnati..they said they were behind on applications bc this is the first time the committee sees all of your file and it was taking longer to get out decisions than they thought. They usually meet Mon and Tues, but next week they are only meeting on one day bc of interviews. 🙁

wow, after 6 months of waiting i finally got an interview at cincinnati! i'm excited

Man... they are killing me with this delay! I logged on last week like 50 times a day on Wednesday to check my status (with heart beating out of chest every time) only to find nothing. Then the same thing this Wednesday. Now it sounds as though there's not a 100% guarantee that this coming Wednesday will produce results either. I was impressed at the interview when Dr. Manuel was so straight forward with the timeline of when we would hear back, and so it's disappointing that they've fallen behind. However, I understand the holidays can throw a wrench into the schedule even for ADCOMs.

hey rocketman, do they call or email for interview invites?

it was an email. it just says to check the status page cause it was updated. i just figured that they finally dropped me from the applicant pool and this was just a way to save some paper haha.

To those accepted,

did you all get a CBC check email AFTER your acceptance to U Cinci. I just got a CBC and am wondering if its U cinci or penn state, i interviewed at both.

I got my CBC check after Cinci acceptance. Congrats on acceptance

Someone posted earlier (I can't find it or else I'd qoute it. I think it was this thread or the invite thread) wondering why UC has such a high step-1 score but an "average" match list. I have a few points to make.

1. It is to my understanding that the really high step-1 score at UC is for the most recent class (the people who took it in 2008), hence their match list is not yet available.

2. At the interview, they gave us the graduation pamphlet from 2008. I looked up the residencies of the AOA (top 15% I think) and this is what I found.

Internal Medicine (7)
Anesthesiology (1)
OB-GYN (2)
Neurosurgery (1)
Surgery (2)
Pediatrics (1)
Orthopedic Surgery (2)
Otolaryngology (1)
Emergency Medicine (4)
Psychiatry (2)
Radiology (2)
Urology (1)

As you can see, much of the top of the class chose less competitive residencies like IM, psych and peds. Obviously, most of the AOA could have gotten into a more selective specialty, but they chose not to. My point is that the match lists should be taken with a grain of salt.

This has been beat into every SDNer in multiple threads, and STILL most people don't believe it... I hope those people aren't that blindly stubborn when they are doctors:scared:

batman,
With UT Southwestern acceptance why are you even talking about Cinci.
Cinci is no match to UT Southwestern. I will start looking for place to stay in Dallas. Cinti in order to improve their ranking will give acceptance to all who apply with MCAT over 33. In the end they all go somewhere else.

lol, I probably end up going to UTSW unless by some miracle I get into a Uni of Cal school, which appears more and more unlikely. Yet, in a Cinci vs UTSW comparison, I think what is tilting me towards UTSW is the school’s cheap tuition/OOS scholarship and location in Dallas. I have been looking at real estate in Dallas, and homes there are really cheap. Dallas has lots of foreclosures and you can get >2500 sq ft 3bdr homes with pools in decent locations for <$90K.

However, in terms of facilities, I thought Cinci was stronger. Their health complex and buildings were amazing. In my opinion, what hurts the school, and in general, all the Ohio schools, is the location. Because of the Ohio’s abundance of medical schools and shortage of physicians, Ohio med schools take lots of OOS(with most of them being from CA), only to have those students leave back for their home state or other locations after obtaining their education.

At the same time, based upon what I have seen on sdn and mdapplicatants.com, I think there have been lots of UofCinci applicants with >33 MCATs that have either been waitlisted/rejected. So, Im not exactly sure how valid that statement is, but I would agree that >33 MCAT does help your chances there, as I think it would at every school(except maybe those blasted UCs😡).

hey so i have an interview coming up in february and was looking up ticket prices coming into the cincinnati airport and they are expensive. I also looked up dayton, which sells for half the price. Is there any bus that runs from dayton to cincinnati? has anyone else done this?

thanks

I always fly in and out of Dayton, but of course I take my car. I'm positive there are buses (check Greyhound), but just make sure it's not cheaper to rent a car for the day or something. The Dayton airport website might have some links. Indianapolis and Columbus airports are also about 1 hour 15min away or so.

I heard that the airfares for Cinci are high because Delta and its subsidaries have a pseudo-monopoly on the airport. Has anyone else heard this?
As for me, I flew in to Columbus, which was about as close to Cinci as Dayton, because the fares were cheaper(at least for Southwest). At Columbus, I rented a car and drove it down to Cinci. It might be your best option since the cheapest car rentals usually go for about $15/day + tax.

Unless you were flying down the 71 freeway at 90mph, Dayton is definitely much closer to Cinci than Columbus:laugh:. I've driven to both many times since I've lived out here. Fares are cheaper to Dayton, Columbus, Louisville, and Indianapolis airports (all within 90mins or less of Cinci). Yes, Delta has a mini-hub at Cinci and they know that their only competition is at least an hour away or more, so they jack up the prices. Also, Southwest, AirTran, Jet Blue and Frontier do not fly into Cinci as far as I can tell...so it's a major airline for you or bust. You can get lucky every so often and find a fare cheap enough where it's worth it, but don't count on it.

agree with above... dayton is definitely the closest bet...however, if you find something cheaper for columbus, go for it... from what i remember, and i could be wrong, it's about 60 vs. 120 miles for dayton and columbus, respectively... good luck! :luck:

Does anyone have the contact info for student housing??

Also, what time does the interview day end if I'm interviewing at 11:30? I'm trying to book my flight back

I would say plan on the day going to 5pm. My check-in time was 11:30 and we were done by 5. Student housing info will be on the UC website, but keep in mind that the grad housing is closed right now for renovations and will have very limited space for grad students in Fall of 09 (assuming they even stay on schedule). They will preference giving the few grad housing spots to international students, so I wouldn't count on it. I lived in the grad housing when I was a grad student here...you're not missing much

thanks for in the info! I meant student-host housing for people who are interviewing. I checked the website but I couldn't find any emails/numbers.

Oh sorry. I'm not sure about that info. Just email or call the adcom office; they're very helpful and pretty quick to respond.

I just emailed admissions and they sent me names of students. I then emailed 2 names (because those were the only 2 that I could determine whether or not they were girls) and then made plans with one of them.

Great, thanks! Has anyone taken the Greyhound from Dayton to Cincinnati? Do you know where it picks you up and drops you off? (It's super cheap, btw for anyone thinking about it)

I don't know where it picks you up in Dayton, but the Cincinnati Greyhound station is downtown off of Gilbert St. and is about 2 miles from the school.

The Dayton Greyhound picks you up on 5th street downtown. It's a good 20 minutes from the airport.

WOW. This is some BS. They just canceled the interviews tomorrow. Goodbye, airplane ticket. This sucks.

that makes more sense:

... WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THIS EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING...

A WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THIS EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING.

A SERIES OF UPPER AIR DISTURBANCES WILL INTERACT WITH A FRONTAL BOUNDARY ACROSS THE TENNESSEE VALLEY MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY... CAUSING WIDESPREAD WINTRY PRECIPITATION TO DEVELOP ACROSS PARTS OF THE OHIO VALLEY THROUGH MIDWEEK.

THE FIRST DISTURBANCE WILL MOVE THROUGH THE OHIO VALLEY TONIGHT AND EARLY TUESDAY... BRINGING ACCUMULATING SNOW TO THE REGION. THREE TO FIVE INCHES OF SNOW ARE POSSIBLE ACROSS THE REGION THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING.

PRECIPITATION WILL LIGHTEN ACROSS THE REGION TUESDAY BEFORE A SECOND SYSTEM LIFTS INTO THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS TUESDAY NIGHT. THIS WILL BRING A SECOND ROUND OF WIDESPREAD WINTRY PRECIPITATION ACROSS THE OHIO VALLEY LATE TUESDAY INTO TUESDAY NIGHT. AS WARMER AIR MOVES IN ALOFT ON TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING... LIGHT SNOW WILL MIX WITH OR CHANGE TO SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN... WITH A LIGHT ICE ACCUMULATION POSSIBLE. THIS SYSTEM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BRING ADDITIONAL SIGNIFICANT ICE OR SNOW ACCUMULATIONS.

wow, thats just really unfortunate. did they reschedule you for a later date?

I had one question question. vbdoc77 said that the dayton airport is a good 20 minutes from the greyhound bus terminal. what's the cheapest way to get from the airport to the bus terminal? taxi? i'd be sad if i had to pay for a 20 minute taxi ride haha

Just withdrew from my interview on 2/12.. time and money are kind of tight right now for me (yes, the $600 flights to CVG didn't help matters any). Hope someone else on here gets the spot!

I believe the only way would be taxi. I don't think there is any sort of shuttle service from the airport to downtown. I'm not 100% sure on that though...

Your flight will probably be canceled anyway, since the snow could shut down the airport if it's as bad as they say. Dayton will be even worse than Cinci...always is. So you might be able to get some sort of refund or reschedule without extra fees. I'm surprised they canceled them though...the last two times it was supposed to snow that badly here, it was nothing. The weathermen here aren't exactly psychic.

I'm a second year at Univ. of Cinci. Like what everybody has said, Dayton is the best place to fly instead of CVG. The fares at CVG are ridiculous. I'm from Cali and there tends to be relatively cheap flights ($250-300) if booked early enough, and it's probably best to rent a car and drive to Cinci (1 hr drive).

hey guys, i'm flying into the Dayton airport on Feb 11 evening around 10 pm and leaving Feb 12 after my 11:30AM interview day is over

I'm planning on renting a car to get to Cincinnati, so if anyone is interested in sharing/splitting costs, please PM me!

It's a mess over here...consider yourself fortunate they canceled interviews today.

my mom just called from columbus and said she is watching the weather channel and apparently everything in Cincinnati is closed? so does that mean the adcom is for sure not meeting today? looks like more waiting 🙁

I called yesterday to cancel my interview, but the line was busy, so I sent an e-mail declining my interview invite. Is this sufficient, or should I call to be sure?

I actually called yesterday and the lady on the other end said to send them an email at their comadmis email address. So you're all set to go.

Just FYI, the med school never officially closes. The undergrad campus was probably closed, as well as many businesses, but when I was a grad student at the med school last year, they circulated an email telling us they pretty much never close for weather and all students/staff are to report in if at all possible.

hey i had a question for you guys already matriculated at uc. i was reading the match list and it seemed like the majority of people that graduated from uc ended up matching within a 300 mile radius. was that just a fluke 2008 year or do graduates mostly match within that concentrated area and if so, is it for any particular reason? reason i'm asking is, i'm from the west coast and ideally would move back to the area after finishing medical school.

thanks so much

ah ok, I was surprised they canceled interviews though. I'm living in Chicago now, where nothing ever gets closed for bad weather, and everyone here laughs at Ohioans for freaking out about 2 inches of snow. I, however, miss the snow days 😉

They probably canceled it for the interviewees' sakes, not theirs. Some flights were canceled at Dayton and Cinci airports, snow emergencies were in effect here, etc. Rather than deal with a rash of interview cancellations and frantic calls from applicants saying they'll be late, they probably found it easier to just postpone the whole day.

I'm from Southern California...you can laugh at me all you want...I hate this weather.😀

I would assume its probably due to stronger rep and connections with increasing closeness to the school, as well as a preference on the part of students(esp in state med schools) to want to remain in that state to be with family, friends, etc. I met lots of ppl at UC that were from Cali and they said that with UC was strong enough that they could match in Cali.

Agree with all of this. I'll also add that compared to SoCal (and many other places too), it is dirt cheap to live in Cinci and some of the surrounding areas. Pretty enticing reason by itself to get a residency around here and start paying off those loans while still being able to keep your head above water. The cost of living here compared to the cost when I lived in Cali is ridiculous. Having said that, I'll pay a few extra bucks for the comfort of home and great weather 😎

Do you all know if Cinci sends out rejections before March? I hope they havent trashed my app yet haha

FYI for those still waiting: I got an interview invite today for 2/27/09. I was complete very early. I have not sent anything beyond small update letters with grades / work.

Congrats on the acceptance! 12/12 interviewee here still waiting final decision. Stats pretty similar to yours (slightly lower MCAT, a bit higher GPA) and I'm praying for an acceptance at UC. The new building was super-nice and I was impressed at the average step I scores (not to mention I am very familiar with the area). I called today and got the impression that the committee did not meet this week (at least on Tuesday), and that they are at least 3-4 weeks behind.
