What I think is interesting is how they come up with class rankings for their students in the end for residency match purposes. How do you compare rank students collectively when they are at different campuses and even different curriculums. I asked the Dean at the Rockford campus this question and he is yet to respond.

Oh.... and I got my packet today! Finally allowed to exhale. Looking forward to meeting those who take the Chicago or Urbana-Rockford track!!

For people who already did a CBC, did you have to do a second one? I got a second e-mail from AMCAS saying I need to do a background check when I got into my second school (UIC), but Certiphi has yet to e-mail me. I don't know why they would need two background checks...does anyone know anything about this?

Also, what do you guys think our odds are for getting placed in the Chicago track? I turned in my site preference card by hand today, but they said they wouldn't get to it until the office reopens on January 5th. :xf:

That's exactly what they told me when I went to turn in by hand ok Monday! Did they give you a receipt that you have turned in the documents and paid the deposit?

I think you should worry about more important things for the time being. I'd imagine, if you must know, that it'll say "University of Illinois College of Medicine".

Regarding the background check, you'll get an e-mail with instructions from the COM Office regarding fingerprinting as you get closer to orientation. Nothing to worry about for now. Just sit back, enjoy, and wait for your site assignments to arrive. 🙂

No receipts. Your $100 deposit will be credited to your tuition, eventually, if you matriculate in the fall. If you don't, you can write a letter and they'll refund it to you.
 
No!! I didn't get a receipt, crap! Haha, hope that's okay. Boo, did you? The woman at the desk said she did not know if the Chicago class was already full b/c she is not involved in it. I wonder who is? Anyway, she said a lot of people had the same idea and also turned theirs in by hand. That bummed me out, I thought I was being so sneaky... 🙂

Life is pretty chill right now, I don't actually have much else to worry about. 🙂

(Besides, I've been told that pedigree of your medical institution matters for the residency that I am considering, so when choosing which medical school to attend it will actually play a role in my decision.)

Be that as it may, University of Illinois sounds good to me! 😀

My mail finally came today at 415! I immediately drove to UIC to turn in my stuff. I got there at 430 to find out it was already closed 😡. Does anyone know when they will reopen?
 
For those who live in Chicago, just curious, what high school did you guys graduated from? I graduated from Lincoln Park '05.
 
So from what I gather from y'all posts is the office will be close from tmw till Jan 5. In that case, should I wait till it opens and drop off my forms or should I just express mail it to them? The deadline is Jan 5. =/ Thanks for the suggestions fellas.
 
Hooray just got accepted and turned in the site preference.

It has finally dawned upon me now the extremely high tuition costs of attending UIC as an OOS. For me, it will add up to almost 400k in loans (plus my undergraduate) after four years of medical school!

$400,000!!!!$400,000!!!!$400,000!!!!$400,000!!!!$400,000!!!! ????

Taking into account I have a spouse after medical school is over, I guess it would take around 2-3 years to pay it back in full if I devote my entire salary to it. Sigh, it is really too much to worry about, this process is never truly going to be over is it. Just need to take it one step at a time, deep breaths, deep breaths.
 
You guys graduated from high school in '05? You guys are such babies!! I'm an old fart. Graduated from college just about when you guys graduated from high school. Oh and I'm attending UIC for sure 👍

This is going to come across as ******ed, but I have quick question regarding the preference card:

I want to go to the Chicago site, so I put a "I" next to it and a "II" next to the UPR track...HOwever, do I also have to rank the UPR clinical sites in case I don't get into the Chicago Track? Thanks

You rank Chicago or UPR as I or II and Urbana, Peoria, and Rockford as 1,2,3.
 
Yes. You also rank the campuses for the UPR track in case you don't get the Chicago one.
 
Hey everyone,

I have an interview on February 11, 2009 at the Chicago Campus. Can anyone tell me what the interview format will be: like how many interviews, how long, how they went, anything at all to help me. In addition, what are the chances I will get the Chicago campus since my interview is in two months from now. That was the earliest date available like 2 weeks ago. I really wanna go to UIC so please help me out with as much info as possible.

Also what are my chances...this is pretty much my only chance of getting into medical school.
I have a 36P mcat, 3.8 GPA cum, 3.86 science GPA, little volunteer, little shadowing, little extracirricular. What can I do to make sure I get into UIC.

Oh and if you're curious, if I get in, I will be the youngest in your class. Graduated Naperville North High School Class of 2007.

Wow, you would be the youngest student at UIC. Although it's hard to gauge how well one will do on an interview, I can offer some advices. The UIC interview is very relaxed. You'll have 3 interviewers, each 25-30minutes long. They will most likely be clinicians and a current med student. One of my clinician didn't come, so I had an admission's staff interview me in lieu. If I can remember correctly, the interview is closed-file. The only thing they have was your supplemental and maybe AMCAS, without the grades and MCAT of course. My strongest advice is to just be yourself, know why you want to go to UIC, have experiences that are unique that you can talk about, and just be calm. I think you'll do great. Best of luck and maybe I'll see you here next year.

Your numbers are a bit weak. Have you considered retaking the MCAT?

I'm kidding. IMO, you have very little to worry about. I know UIC looks for a strong commitment to volunteering and community involvement, so make sure you have a good answer in case they ask you something regarding those activities. If anything, I believe your age will only benefit you in gaining admission to a school that prides itself on having a diverse student body.

Will you get the Chicago Campus? I think that will become more clear after this next round of site assignments goes out. If there are people still being assigned to Chicago this round, then it means the admissions office is not filling up sites on a first-come, first-serve basis -- and you should still have a shot at your top choice of campus. Where did you go for undergrad? You went to high school in Chicago-land so you have that going for you. A general trend that I've noticed (anyone should feel free to correct me if they know otherwise) is that those who completed their undergraduate studies in the Chicago area were assigned to the Chicago campus. Hope the interview goes well.

You aren't ranked against students at the other campuses, for Chicago,at least. We're only ranked amongst the 180~ of us here.

My concern is that if you express it now, it'll just get returned to you since no one will be in the office to sign for it. I would either drop off the forms on Jan 5 or express it on Jan 3rd (make sure you tell them NOT to deliver on sunday).

Unfortunately, it looks like they've already gotten to the point where they start playing games with site assignments.

That's the one. Give them a phone call to let them know what happened. Your acceptance and site assignment won't be final until they get the deposit. Congratulations!
 
For those who have been accepted and assigned a location:

First, congrats!, and second, what does the status-check webpage say under "Additional Correspondence?"

If you go to the status-check page and click "next," there's a place for additional correspondence.

For me, there is a date that is one month later then when I received the location assignment letter, the last correspondence we've had.

Anyone get additional correspondence beyond the location assignment letter?

Has anyone taken tours of the Peoria and Rockford sites (without being at an interview)? If so, did you schedule it--or can you just stop by?
 
so i'm still decision pending after last month's adcom meeting.

does anyone know what i should do to hopefully increase my chances at getting accepted? letter of intent? talk to dr. g personally? ( i know him well b/c i go to uic)

also, does anyone know if being decision pending after an adcom meeting is good or bad? does that mean im waitlisted to the end and forgotten? what are the chances of being accepted while still on 'decision pending'?

thanks for any advice.

You knowing Dr. G personally already gives you a good advantage over everyone else on hold so I'd take advantage of the acquaintance with him and talk to him. The worst that can happen is that you'll look like a desperate fool, but that will still get you noticed and work in your favor. Most likely he'll really appreciate the fact that you want this badly enough to have built up the balls to talk to him. I'd go talk to Dr. G and follow up with a thank you e-mail that serves also as a letter of intent that further expresses your interest. Done in a professional manner, you will be sporting extra stars on your file when they re-review those on hold. Good luck to you and happy new year!

I just showed up and walked around by myself. I was there on a weekend, so I didnt get the whole feeling of it, but it was still nice to see the facilities and stuff. I'm not sure if you can schedule a tour, but it wouldnt hurt to ask.
 
hey guys, how long did it take for you to receive for site assignment after sending the card back in? i've been waiting almost a month, i know it's the holidays though...

The office is closed until 1/5. Took me about three weeks last year; if you don't hear anything by around the 12th, maybe give them a call.

In our acceptance packet there is a sheet saying we should call if we want a tour. They list the phone numbers of each site, too. And it might be more beneficial to tour than to look around without someone helping you.
 
The Chicago Campus tour dates are on interview days from 12:15-1:15pm. Call 312-966-5635 or e-mail [email protected]

The Peoria Campus tours are scheduled on an individual basis through the Office of Advancement and Community Relations. E-mail Judy Heffernan at [email protected] or call 309-671-8411.

Rockford campus tours are scheduled on an individual and personal basis. Call Doreen Dowadkin at [email protected] or call 815-395-5630.

Urbana-Champaign tours are scheduled on an individual and personal basis. E-mail Robbin Burge at [email protected] or call 217-333-8146.
 
Does anyone happen to know what the first day of classes will be in the fall? The calendar for this past fall states that the students started a week before the undergraduates (calendar shows the first day of classes as Aug 18), but I've heard from another source that you actually start two weeks before the undergraduates because the first week is only an orientation.

Looks like last year orientation began around Aug. 11th for the Chicago campus, and around the 19th for the Urbana campus... So I would think that they should be around the same time this year!
 
I tried wading through this entire thread for my answer, but there's just too many posts. I'm hoping someone can answer my question quickly, because I need to book a flight today.

I interview at the end of this month, and on the letter I received in the mail it reads, "The interview session begins at 1:00 PM and ends at 4:30 PM." Does this mean I should plan to arrive at the Office of Academic Students Affairs at 1:00 PM? Meaning the entire day is only three and a half hours?

Also, is there some sort of interview schedule or timeline online? I couldn't find one on their website.


Edit -- My interview is at the Rockford campus, if that matters.

I interviewed in Chicago, but a friend of mine interviewed in Rockford. Your interview day does in fact start at 1 and will end by 4:30... Depending on which interview group you end up in you could be out earlier in fact. I don't think there is a timeline online, but I am pretty sure at the Rockford campus it consists of a tour and an interview and thats about it.

I interviewed in Chicago and my interviews were in the 2nd part of the day. I think we had to arrive at 12 for lunch and tour. But yeah, I know your letter reads interview session starts 1-430, but I'm not quite sure if that includes lunch and the tour. Sorry I am not helpful, but if I were you and no one could give me a definitive answer, I would just call tomorrow. Although, I'm sure they're going to be slammed with phone calls tomorrow after being out of the office for so long.

I interviewed in the morning, but I saw afternoon interviewees trickle in earlier than 1PM. Both morning and afternoon interviewers will go on the campus tour together as a group, so your day will definitely start with the tour. If I remember correctly, the tour starts at 1PM. I would arrive a bit earlier than 1 and get to know the students and faculty members. It doesn't hurt to socialize and get yourself acquainted. Oh yea, both morning and afternoon interviewees have lunch and listen to the dean's welcoming message together. Afterwards, the afternoon interviewee will have their interviews (n=3) and the morning interviewees are free to go. I hope this helps.

Post 1PM - afternoon interviews (n=3); morning interviewees are free to go

Whoops! My bad! I guess it did start at 1PM. Good advice though, arriving early and just getting to talk to other interviewees.
 
Has anyone who interviewed at Peoria been asked about campus choice? I'm interviewing this week and just curious... anyone have any advice? U of I, regardless of campus, is my number 1.
