Hi: Just got an e-mail today from Ms. Harris stating that my letter was on the way. What does this mean? I hope this letter contains good news. Anyone else receive this e-mail? Thanks.

My e-mail stated that my acceptance packet was on the way.

Congratulations on your acceptance Mezus!

Thanks!
Does anyone know if UT has a second look day?

Thanks!

I don't think they have a formal second look day but if you call diane they'll set one up for you.

From the looks of this thread, only about 12 people are applying to UT this year.

Yeah I noticed it's been a very quiet thread

-probably because of the lack of online status checking

There are alot that are already accepted if you look at the UT-Memphis Class of 2013 thread.

Have any of you interviewed recently?? Does anyone know that acceptance rate from the interview pool?

Any luck for OOS people as of yet?

Anybody know when those of us who were wait listed will here from UT? Has anybody who was waitlisted heard anything yet? Also, I'm seeking info about ETSU Quillen COM and UT Memphis. Any advice from people entering emergency medicine about pro's and con's of the two schools?

People don't have to turn down Memphis until May so they might not take people off the waitlist until after that? Also, Memphis was compared to a 3rd world country where you see a wide range of every disease, illness, injury possible and you have more responsibility in your rotations. My impression of ETSU is that it is more rural care based. It has better facilities though...

How soon did you all hear from Diane after your interview. The wait is killing me.

I was just wondering what type of letter comes in the mail for acceptance, waitlist, and rejection. I interviewed on 2/23 and i am dying to know my status. Also I read earlier that the class size is increasing to 165. Is that for 2009?

I interviewed last week too and they haven't gotten back to us yet. Supposed to be this week or next. Rejection or waitlist you'll get an email saying your letter is in the mail. Acceptance you'll get an email saying your acceptance packet is in the mail.

I interviewed on a Monday, commitee met on Friday, Friday night I had an e-mail telling me my letter is on the way, I had my letter by the next Thursday.

... then did they just decide not to meet this Friday?

Also at medschooready.com it says that UT accepts about 1 of 3 instate interviewees but accepted=matriculated+deferred. What do you think the number of offers there are truly?

Hi there,

As a current med student at UT, I can vouch for the above. The clinical experience is un-rivaled by most other schools (probably compares to Charity Hospital in NOLA before the hurricane). You will see and do more than 95% of your peers at other schools. The Med is an unbelievable experience for trauma, medicine, and surgery. Trauma in this city, as you can imagine, is ridiculous. You deliver more babies on 2 weeks of OB than the OB-GYN interns from other schools. People in this city, in general, take very poor care of themselves, which leads to some awesome pathology on medicine and surgery services. You will see tons of HIV/AIDs pts and become very comfortable managing the numerous complications of their disease. What most people don't realize is that we get a great balance of rotations at nice private hospitals (Methodist University hospital, Baptist East, and St Francis) to balance this great county experience. Le Bonheur is building a brand-new state of the art children's hospital that looks to be awesome. And then there's Erlanger in Chattanooga (which I've nothing but great things about) and the UT hospitals in Knoxville if you want a break from the M-town. Seriously, our clinical training here is awesome.

The pre-clinical years are continuing to improve. Two of the old course directors have recently retired/been let go and I hear these courses have improved greatly (MBOD and Physiology). Our anatomy dept is extremely well staffed. The Step 1 average in my class was above the national average (somewhere in the 220s). No, we don't have fancy lecture halls, but they more than serve their purpose and the library isn't bad at all. Memphis is not the greatest city, but the same things that make it just an ok place to live make it a great place to study medicine. In short, the pre-clinical curriculum is not our strength, but more than gets the job done (as demonstrated by our step 1 avg) and is continuing to improve. I chose to come here over other schools that were more highly ranked in USN&WR and do not have any regrets.

I very rarely check this site, but if you have any more specific questions about the school, please feel free to shoot me a PM and we can talk via email.

Good luck!

looks like i'm going to be reapplying for 2010. i have to get my mcat score up. any second year applicants on here have any advice for the reapplicant?

Anyone have any news? The last time I talked to Diane, she said the committee would meed March 22nd (which is today, a Sunday, so I think she had her dates confused, unless they really work on Sunday *shrug*).

I've got nothing. I thought I read here that final decisions go out on April 30.

Could somebody tell when is the last interview date?

I just want to get a feeling when I could hear something from the office.

Unfortunately, I believe they've finished interviews. They had their last committee meeting last week, if I understand correctly. You may want to call the admissions office and double check.

Per Diane Harris via e-mail:

Thank you for taking the time from your day to open my e-mail. The Admissions Committee will make all final decisions at our Friday, March 27th meeting. This e-mail is sent to you to let you know that your final decision letter will be mailed Friday, April 3rd to your address on your interview appointment letter; unless you e-mailed me to request a change of address. If you have not received your final decision letter within 7-10 days AFTER April 3rd, 2009, please let me know.

Thanks for updating this!

Any news? I remember being told that we would be emailed if an acceptance letter was coming..I'm pretty sure I got the ax because I'm OOS

April 3rd is quickly approaching. If they indeed met for the last time last Friday, then that means that everyones fate has been determined. We're just waiting on an email and a letter in the mail. Geez.

Did anyone get any email about something being mailed today? Am I the only one here? Echo!

No email here.

If anyone was wondering, UTM did not increase their class size this year (it remains a class of 150).

Really? They told us about three times they did...though it's possible the decisions was reversed. Odd.

They told us that, too. That was ~October, though. I blame the economy.

Just got my waitlist letter. 223 people on the waitlist, 150 class size. Sounds like I'm applying again...for the fourth time....awesome...

That is some waitlist. No letter yet here

For those waiting on letters, they are still giving out acceptances. My friend got one in the mail today. He lives in Winchester, TN. Hang in there!

Just in case anyone wasn't aware, if you get a waitlist letter starting today, you can call admissions and they will give you an inkling of where you are on the list and the likelihood of getting in. I checked mine this morning 🙂

Did you call Diane Harris's cell or just the admissions office?

I am in the same boat. When you say inkling, what exactly do you mean? Did they tell you top-third, middle-third, etc.? Did they give you any kind of idea if you'd move up to accepted status? I plan on calling tomorrow, just wanted to know how hard I could press them. It will most likely make little difference, but I'm ready for something concrete, d@mnit.

I was told roughly where I was, a little more descriptive than top third or quarter. They certainly will give you their opinion on the chance of getting an admission, which is nice. Once May 15 rolls around, we can talk about it more. I'm under the impression that the admissions folks aren't technically allowed to give much info until then, so I don't want to blurt anything out and get anyone in trouble, haha.

No worries, this adequately answers my question. Thanks for the prompt reply...

I worked at UT (until Feb) and the decision had been approved by the school but before I left I was told it had to be approved by the state.
Because of the economy they were going to recruit 15 more out of staters so they could charge more tuition to bring some money into the school. I haven't kept up with what happened at the state level as far as them allowing the class size to increase from out of state students so I'm not sure if it was rejected or it has even gone to the state for approval. It's not exactly the best way of pumping money into the system but I hoped it would have panned out...

I talked to someone to a friend's uncle who is on the admissions board. Apparently the bill to increase the class size is on the list to be voted on but the state senate hasn't gotten to it yet. He said if they do get it passed before the deadline for admission they will just take 15 off the waitlist.

This is what Diane told me, also.

Hopefully they get to it since I am pretty sure my admittance depends on it.

Just got alternate listed. That's ok.

Well, you should certainly call and check your rank. Who knows, you may be in the top 10!

I will definitely do that.

Update: It didn't sound too promising. OOS folks have it a little tougher.

Does anyone know the variability in number of alternates accepted each year? I know the supplement says 60-65. Is that more of the rough range or the average? Does it vary from 50-75?
