anyone else laughing at these interschool fellowships? i don't speak estonian, and i'm not from nebraska! does P&S give any regular merit aid?

yeah they seem VERY random...I'm hoping (and assuming) there may be a few other scholarships around seeing as how they had you fill out that orangey colored form that asked about research, interests, etc

This may be a really dumb Q, but where is there to eat around the medical campus when living in Bard? I didnt notice a meal plan option and I didnt notice many restaurants or supermarkets in the area.

There is a three night optional meal plan that you can sign up for. Foods pretty good, and they are cool with you taking leftovers. The carts a good for breakfast and the occasional gyro. There's a cafe that is open 24 hours that has sandwiches, soups, pastries, etc. Lots of delivery options and dominican restaurants. There's also a popular sandwich shop called Tasty deli. Within a couple blocks of the campus you will also find McDonalds, Wendy's, Subway, Popeyes, indian food, multiple chinese restaurants, a bar and grill, pizza, a mom and pop diner, etc. Plenty of options during the day, but truthfully now many options late at night other than fast food, the cafe, and the carts. There are a couple grocery stores right off campus, but a lot of people use online grocery delivery.

WL - "very highly ranked" - postmarked mar 5th, received last friday, in eastern canada.

half as sweet as yes, but twice as sweet as no!

Do we send updates and stuff to the general admissions address or somewhere else? do we address it to dean frantz or... 😕

also, is there a columbia waitlist thread where we can have a wl party?

I do not think I can attend both days, but I would like to come for as
much as I can. Is there a schedule of events that I can look at?
That way I can figure out which day will be more beneficial for me.

It seems a lot of people received their letters by last Friday, but I haven't gotten anything yet. (I live in NC.) Is anyone in the same situation?

Also, someone asked this earlier, but there was some confusion in the answers. Is the letter sent to the preferred or permanent address? Thanks!

Not yet that I know of, but expect updates through the facebook group.

Just got this, can't gaurunte that thi is complete, but I'd recommend Th based on it:

Thursday, April 15 - Registration will begin at 10:30 A.M.. Scheduled events for the day include class visits, presentations from Professors and Special Work Shops. In the evening there will be a Coffee House and BBQ.

2. Friday, April 16 - Campus and Neighborhood Tours, Lunch and Discussion Panel

Hang in there! I and a bunch of my close Columbia Med friends all got in off the waitlist. Let them know if they are your top choice. Write/call Dean Frantz (or that's how we used to do it). It's worth fighting for.
Good luck!

Question for mmmc or another current student:
One of my 1st year columbia dental* friends said that P&S profs only discuss their own research during lecture; all relevant material (i.e. content to be tested on Step1 + block exams) had to be learned on one's own through the text/review books, etc. Have you found this to be the case?

*dental students take the same P&S classes alongside med students and my friend was referring to these

no.

mmmcdowe, do you guys go out at night on Friday or do things usually wind down around 11 pm or so? How was it from your second look?...i'm deciding whether I should drive home (35 min), stay with a friend in the city, or get student host

I can't speak from experience, but I'll be there and I'm down for getting a few beers on Friday night.

People usually do things on Friday nights, many of said things include drinking though there are certainly other options (this is New York after all! I personally like comedy clubs and the undergrad campus always has something going on that's cheap/free). For second look though, I'm pretty confident that you can expect for things to last beyond 11pm, so if you can stay I would recommend it even if you don't drink. There will be Friday night student hosts as well as the other nights.

Apologies if this has already been discussed (I haven't had the chance to peruse old pages): How common/easy is it for first years to get an apartment nearby campus (i.e. not in the dorms)? I am very interested in Columbia on the whole but I do not want to go back to dorm life!

Does that include the night before the 15th of April (Wed night)? The email from the admissions office said overnight housing would be provided on Thursday night only.

Sorry yeah I meant this question to be specifically for second look-wasn't really clear about that

thanks for info though

The extent of my knowledge is that they are seeking student hosts for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. So, maybe they just mean they will guarantee you housing on Th?

Just booked my flight to come for revisit! Can't wait! 🙂

How do we go about applying for or inquiring about the interschool fellowships? Who do we write to and how? The letter was so cryptic.

I do not understand what you mean by fellowship...

Anywho, for those who are interested in Match Lists (which I don't recommend honestly but to each their own), Columbia's came out today. It happens to be outside the cast room and I have a huge break during this play so I took a gander 7/7 matched neurosurgery (only specialty I know how many applied, but only one person didn't match and they are already taken care of to do their prelim year here at Columbia), 14 matched ortho, 3-4 in derm, 14 (!!) in radiology, and ~8 in urology. Let me know if you have any requests.

Common and easy, if you join the facebook group some older students will likely be seeking roomates.

Do you mind looking up how many people matched in plastic surgery, ophthalmology, vascular surgery, and plastic surgery? Thanks!

Forgive any errors, as the match list is long and low to the ground (I should be on give or take one).

Optho- 10
Plastics- 2 (Note: 7-8 matched ENT and many do facial plastics fellowship. I actually just had physical diagnosis with one of them today actually)
Vascular Surgery is a fellowship through general surgery and so is listed at most programs as just general surgery. We matched 18-20 general surgery this year.

Did anyone receive any feedback from the LOI, especially indicating relative position/likelihood/timeline of being accepted?

mmmcdowe, thanks!! could you just clarify... what waitlist letters? do you mean only one waitlist letter was sent out today by the office? or only one applicant from the WL sent a LOI that was received by the office...

also, are there clues in the language of the general waitlist letters (the ones where you receive first notification of your status) as to how good of a chance you have?

thanks again!!

Discussed the whole waitlist letter today with the admissions office. Only one letter was sent.

Sorry, to clarify only one type of waitlist letter was sent out when admissions decisions were made. Any perceived differences in language is a misunderstanding on the part of the readers. This does not include any hand written notes on letters that someone mentioned, which I did not ask about.

this page is getting slow...

so...WHEN ARE WE GETTING HOUSING INFO!

I think we were supposed to have gotten it the week after we got the admissions packet, but nada

I know-my mom called and said I got a packet from Columbia at home, but I think it was just a health insurance thing? I share your sentiments about the lack of enthusiasm on this page-I come on to SDN and am so surprised when I don't see Columbia on the most recent hits anymore...Kick it up you guys!

I called the housing office and they said they'll get materials to us within another week or so.

How important is it to own a laptop?
Can I get by with a desktop?

Would it be weird to send them copies of my new paintings with an update letter? I haven't really done much else exciting recently (just been volunteering at the same places, working at the same lab).

Also, how do you request a second interview? Call them up or email? Or is it a faux-pas to ask for one?

It depends on what you like to do for studying. A lot of people take notes and study via laptop. I prefer to it it by hand because I'm terrible at focusing when I have internet access. As long as you are good studying in your room or in the library when a computer is needed it really isn't a hassle. All of the lecture hall have public computers nearby so you can always use them in between class if you need to. If you have a smartphone or what not with internet (I don't, so even this isnt' a necessity) its even easier to get by without a laptop.

I guess I would ask how big are the paintings? Digital copies might be called for if they are big. I would encourage it personally. Send in the products of your labors, whatever they might be (money does not count 😉 ). Also, do not request a second interview, just make it clear that you would love another chance to talk to someone or, if you are going to be in town, let them know that too. Otherwise, second interviews are on the phone. They don't expect you to fly from Florida or where ever. You can also try the direct method of calling up and asking to talk to Dean Nicholas/Frantz. I really wouldn't recommend this yet, as no one has really withdrawn yet so there really aren't any spots to give.

I was going to send regular letter sized prints of them (everything is nicer on paper but maybe CD is better? idk. it seems like more trouble).

Thanks for all your tips!!! Time to let them know how much i love them still...

Paper is fine (or both), it allows for personalization.

Anyone know if a waitlist thread has been set up yet for Columbia

I was bored, so I imported the match list into an excel sheet.

Now you can sort easily by hospital, specialty, or city.

🙂

hey mmmcdowe - I noticed you said specifically to not request a second interview...now, the thing is, in a letter I just sent to Dr. Frantz I may have mentioned something along the lines of 'could we meet / have a second interview'....advice?

And btw, you are kind of like a God in this thread. All hail mmmcdowe...

Any chance you want to repost that as an older version of excel or a csv? Cheers for doing that!

They won't cut off your arm about it. It's just a diplomatic thing. Obviously everyone wants a second interview when they say they'd love to talk more about going to Columbia 😉

If you upload the file to google docs you can read it and probably save it to your computer as an older version of excel.

Hey everyone!

We are super excited for Revisit Weekend and can't wait to meet all of you! If you haven't already, please sign up for the Facebook group (Columbia College of Physicians ans Surgeons, Class of 2014) for updates on the Revisit Schedule.

See ya soon!

I know some people were interested in if there was a Friday night activity. There will definitely be things going on all over, but for those who are interested one of those activities is a COSMO (one of our two student run clinics) is having a benefit concert called the Yerbabuena Cosmo Benefit Concert. It isn't free but its going to be pretty amazing and a great way to support local art initiatives and also COSMO.

Hi -- for those familiar with how the housing application process goes, is this the website where we are supposed to fill out our housing app?
http://www.cumc-housing.columbia.edu/forms/form_psapp.html
I see that the not-too-detailed housing info we got states that the app deadline is 4/15. Aren't we guaranteed housing at Bard? Thanks for any clarification! 🙂
