Hey everyone, this is my first post ever. I was so excited for my interview at FSU, but I was really sick when I went. Even so, I thought my interviews went really well. I heard back on Friday that I was put on hold. I'm super bummed about it, since I haven't been accepted anywhere else yet. Does anyone have advice about what I should be doing now to get them to relook at me? How many people do they usually accept off their "wait-list"?

Go through my posts on here. I got off the wait-list, so it happens. I believe I also explained everything I did. Whether it helped or not, who knows. I do feel like I had people in the office pulling for me when I came in though.

Any new interview invites?

I've been complete forever it seems like..... still waiting for a response.

I'd probably start winding down aspirations of an interview if you haven't gotten one. I'm not saying it WON'T happen, but the odds are going down pretty quick right now. There are probably around 16 or so interview dates left. They cut interviewing off a few weeks earlier since they have the early start I think. Note the hesitancy in what I'm saying because I don't want to be a dream crusher and am not involved with admissions to truly know.

you managed to crush my dreams anyways. lol jk. my sister would probably find it hilarious if i went to fsu for med school. she went for undergrad, and i'm at uf. a house divided, indeed 🙂. so it would be like me going to the other side. i'll just assume they don't want me because i'm too cool for tally 😀.

Oh, I've got you beat. Two of my sisters went to UF and one lived in gainesville for a few years. One sister got her bachelors and masters there and the other got her bachelors and law degree there. Then, my dad did his fellowship at University of Miami and was a huge canes fan. I can't get into FSU football in the least. I went to Penn State and even though Bowden is retired now, it is hard for me to just unwind and stop caring about the race between JoePa and him. 😛

Half the med school is UF. You'll see more Orange and Blue FSU med tshirts than legit FSU colors.

The ONLY people I don't want here are crazy neurotic gunner types. Our school is too laid back (most of the time) for that.

Is it customary for wait-listed candidates to attend the Open House? Any other wait-listers considering it? I go to FSU, so it's no trouble for me to stop by and take a second look.

I did last year. I wanted to go here so bad it hurt. I was looking for apartments in Ft. Lauderdale when I found out about the open house. Rather than stay the few extra days I intended, I drove back that night. I woke up, shaved, put on a shirt and tie and talked to anyone that let me. I also gave the man that interviewed me a letter stating my commitment to the school. They tried to put me in the prospective students room but I saw one of my friends who already got in and followed her into the accepted lecture. Sat front row and smiled the entire time.

It may have not done a friggin thing, but it certaintly didn't hurt to show how bad I wanted to come here.

they figured they might as well accept you if you were going to show up to student things anyways. maybe you'd even sneak in to class with your friend. so they might as well get some money from you 😉

I'm waitlisted and I am considering going unless I get accepted someplace else. I'm going to make sure that they know I'm going to be there too 😉

They can take my money. The sad thing is that my medical degree will cost half as much as my undergraduate. 😛

Seriously though, they really do seem to reward the people that WANT to go here. One thing that makes us different than other schools is the enthusiasm from the students. We might not all buy into the rural/underserved primary care philosphy, but nearly every student wanted to come here. That sounds stupid to say, but I've been to lots of other schools where the students attended because of perceived prestige or it was the only school they were accepted to. It wasn't because their heart was there. That leads to a bit of a disgruntled student body. We have people here that were accepted to UF, USF, Miami, Penn State, NYMC, Albany, UI-Chicago, GW and a multitude of other MD/DO schools. They chose here because it felt right and that energy is contagious. I wish you guys knew how cynical and pessimistic I am normally, so it does mean a lot when I say these things. 😉

I wipe my bum with "prestige." It's the opiate of the insecure.

As far as the open house goes, what sort of dress code is expected? I'm guessing khakis and a nice button down? I'd like to avoid wearing my suit if at all possible.

So are my chances of interviewing here dead in the water or what? I'm IS and very disappointed I haven't had any luck with FSU

Just got invited to interview today! I was complete 11/30 and booked the morning session on Friday, April 2nd 😀

If you are accepted then it really doesn't matter. If you were trying to impress like I was then at least business casual. There was a pretty wide mix of styles when I was there I recall.

Does FSU like to receive update letters??

Hey, congratz to u!! I m sure this invite would definetly mean a lot to u! Would u actually mind sharing if u had ever sent in a letter of update/interest after being complete @ FSU? I was complete much before u & havent heard anything so far! I was contemplating on whether or not to send a letter at this point since they r almost winding down with the interview offers:scared:

Thanks in advance for any input!!🙂

Nearly every month I sent them an update email with what I was doing last year. I tried to show them that I didn't just turn the switch off when things were slowing down.

MosPoh, were you involved in new EC's/activities each month? I've sent in two updates now(waitlisted in october), with different EC's, additional minor, shadowing that I have now participated in. However, my faculty advisor at FSU who is also a professor at the med school, told me not to flood them with trivial updates. I want to show my interest but I don't want to annoy and send upadates which they find irrelevant. I'm also going to write an LOI.
I think I'm in a similar situation as you were last year as I read you were looking for apts in Ft.Laud 🙂

Anyways I know you're telling how you went about things, I'm just trying to get as much info as possible. Thanks!

Thanks, I'm very happy! I did not send in any updates to this school after being complete.

Yayyy congratulations!! Good luck 🙂

Thank you! 😀

To everyone who is still waiting for a reply. I'm an M2 here, so I've now seen two complete cycles through FSU applications (mine and for the class of 2013). A LOT of people get a last minute interview and are let in, i know that quiet a few of my friends up here were interviewed last minutes, let in at the last minute, and are thriving here. Correspondingly, I had friends who had good grades, decent MCAT scores, and interviewed all over the country... but never heard back from FSU. Also, for everyone on the wait listed expect a lot of last minute acceptances, cause that always happen too.

Are they still even sending out interview invites over here?

I was involved with quite a few things during my semester off. I wasn't taking classes that semester, so it left a lot of time to do other things. Big brother/big sister, work, fitness stuff, shadowing, etc.

I am accepted to the FSUCOM class of 2014 and its a strong second choice, but I'm still waiting for another school. However, isn't the commitment deadline to FSU March 15th??

I might be wrong on this, but I believe that all students who have been accepted must release their multiple acceptances and hold only one. This is not to say that you are giving your commitment to that school if you have been waitlisted or still waiting to hear from your other choices. If you are accepted to your other school of choice, you can drop your seat at FSU after this date. This is why schools accept students all the way up to orientation. Hope this helped (and also hope it is accurate) good luck 😀

Gotcha. Thanks for your input!

how last minute were the invites? i feel like it's getting to be pretty late in the cycle for any sort of invite here...

I'd expect around another 4-6 weeks of interviews. Not sure if I'd count springbreak as an interview week. I don't think they do interviews next week.

The admissions office said they interview untill mid april when I asked them. I'm in the same boat as you all..still hoping/waiting...

If you don't mind sharing kjsmith127 what were your stats?

Hey premed, I'm an undergrad at FSU and was waitlisted to the COM here back in early october. I am also interested in people's stats, but at FSU GPA and MCAT are held in less regard than other schools. I know students here who have been accepted w/ 27-28 mcats, even one student accepted with a 25(minority). I also know a professor at the med school who has said they are so overburdened with apps they can't possibly interview everyone.

I say this just to let you know, if you arent interviewed, it's not bc of your stats and probably not due to the rest of your app either. My best advice is that if you end up reapplying do it as early as possible, i think that gives a big advantage at FSU..and most other schools. I may be right there with you if I don't end up being accepted at a school of my choice as well.

Thanks for your thoughts. To be honest, a lot of people have told me about how important it is to apply early and my application was complete mid-november...Wish I knew that before I applied. Blows to have to reapply and wait another year. I will still hold out hope though.

Hey Guys,

This is my first post 😉 I was wondering if you all could clarify this email that FSU sent me. I think I am accepted, but technically not accepted. This would be my first acceptance of the season! I was just wondering if I should still update with FSU or does this email mean that I am already accepted?

"Although your current status with regard to acceptance at the FSU College of Medicine is on “Hold”, we do not want you to interpret that as meaning that you are unlikely to be accepted into the Class of 2014. Our past history indicates that we will likely make well over fifty more offers of acceptance before we complete our cycle, and your application is included in that group. Indeed, we are happy to let you know that your application has been ranked highly enough that we fully anticipate that you will be offered a position in the class in the near future.
We hope that this message will clarify the situation and will allay concerns about your status with FSU. We also hope that you will continue to keep FSU College of Medicine in consideration for your educational plans. Please let us know if you have any questions concerning this or other matters relating to FSU COM, and thank you for your continuing interest in our program."

Thank you for your responses!

p.s. I interview Feb. 12th.

sounds to me like "hold"=waitlist, and as soon as other people drop out of the class, a spot will open up for you. then you'll be accepted.

Sounds like a high priority waitlist to me. Essentially, once people start giving up their seats at FSU (probably around May 15), you'll be one of the first people they offer an acceptance to replace those who dropped out.

MasterTsP, Did you write an email to them inquiring about your status or is this a general email that many people received?

MasterTsP, Did you write an email to them inquiring about your status or is this a general email that many people received?

No, I did not email them about my status and I am not sure if this is a mass email (it was addressed to me). They originally sent an email placing me on hold two weeks ago, then this tuesday they sent this email. I was confused over the wording because it says they will accept 50 or so more people before the cycle ends which would be in mid april. Thus, I do not know if this means I am waitlisted and will be offered a spot in May or that they will accept me after a few more interviews. Also, I was wondering if I should bother updating when the email says I will be accepted eventually?

hey I'm new to SDN and was put on hold in February and did not receive that email. Did anybody else receive it this week?

That email is a writing technique used to diffuse frustrations involved in a waitlist. It is essentially telling you to not give up hope and think of the waitlist as the kiss of death. They don't really do a formal priority type thing. I know it is a writing technique because I've had to write those before in other fields.

In reality, it is longer than that too. They don't instanteously start calling people on March 15. It is more of an initial audit to figure out how many seats they need to fill. The final flurry of acceptances off waitlists usually happens the last 2 or 3 weeks before class starts I think. It is fairly slow moving early on, which is to be expected. Many people waitlisted were accepted at other schools. They get offered a spot. The school then has to wait and find out their decision. It just takes a long time...but yes, it is painful. 😉
