is loyola a highly ranked school? if it's really highly ranked, i don't think it'll be worth it for me.

can anyone share with me why they want to go to loyola? (basically, what makes loyola unique/awesome? please convince me to do the secondary)

i've completed 22 secondaries already, and i really don't want to write 7x25 lines worth of bs....

my stats are okay, i'm a reapplicant, i'm from california and don't have an overwhelming urge to leave...or to pay for a private school....oh and one more thing, i'm lazy =P

Slightly troll-ish, imo, but, I'll oblige...

Do you think that possibly, just maybe, since Loyola isn't necessarily considered a highly ranked school, they make their secondary a beast to weed out people trying to use them as a safety school? Clearly, those truly interested in attending Loyola will have no qualms about putting in the effort to research the school and taking the time to thoughtfully complete it.

From your post, it's clear that you don't truly want to attend this school. If you have to ask others to give you a compelling reason to apply, then save you money.

Just curious, as a re-applicant, which CA school do you feel is so much cheaper and you have a better shot at? 😕 That is bass ackwards...

Congrats on receiving your secondary! I still have hope for getting one. 🙂

(I wrote their essays many weeks ago, so they sadly are waiting with me for the Loyola email)

if my letters have been upped to AMCAS, will that be fine?

also, my prehealth committee letter, as i understand it, consists of a letter written by the committee along with the four other letters from my various professors. should i just list that one committee letter (which i believe comes attached with the other prof's letters) or also add on these professors separately ?

yes to question 1, committee letter is what u should list.

Did you transfer from them though? If not, you don't have to write a letter or get a LOR from them. Stritch's instruction packet clearly states "If you have transferred during you undergraduate career, ...." It is highly unlikely that taking one or two classes at JC qualifies.

So I studied abroad (program through my school so it is considered to be part of my main university) and then took summer classes at another school for one summer as a non-degree seeking student (bc it was in my home town). I don't need to worry about letters from these schools right?

you should be good to go, but as always theres no harm in sending an email or calling them. They only want ones from degree granting schools basically. So you went to a CC for 2 years transferred to a 4 year or something. Or you did your masters then they want one.

just got the secondary as well. Wow too many essays....

ok just called to double check and they said i didnt need them...that is good considering it would be a total pain to get them now...

Lol... I always wondered that as well (regarding the long secondary).

I just started at Loyola (we started class Monday!), so I can add a bit more info.

True--as far as rankings go, we're not anywhere special (though the administration is trying to increase the amount of research taking place, including awarding research grants to students). Still, we're mostly in the mid-tier. At least until last year, we were slightly below the mean for scores. For fall 2009, the average MCAT went up a point or two, but I don't know how that compares to trends at other schools.

Regarding the secondary--Loyola gets a ton of applicants--over 10,000, which is more than almost all other schools (I remember looking through the MSAR, but I no longer have one, so please correct me if I'm wrong).

Loyola really means it when they say they are looking at the whole person, and looking for people who are a good fit for the school--which you can imagine is tough with 10,000 applicants. And the Dean of Admissions and head of the Admissions Committee read every single completed application. (!)

While it's possible the secondary is long to deter people (and it does!), the main reason it is long is to give Loyola more of a chance to get to know applicants. The interview rate is rather low (about 500 people), so the school wants to make sure they are interviewing people for whom there is a good chance will fit in. While it's very difficult to interview at Loyola, it's relatively easy to get accepted if you interview--about half of those who are interviewed are accepted. If you are very passionate about Loyola, chances are they will be passionate about you.

All of this is great of course--all of my classmates are amazing people. Everyone really, really wanted to go to Loyola (I've yet to meet anyone for whom it was a back-up). Personally, I prefered it to my state schools (the UC's); that's how much I loved it.

Just keep in mind, most of us don't plan on being high-profile researchers--our main goal is to be compassionate and competent clinicians. If that is your main goal, Loyola is very hard to beat.

I'm not on SDN as much these days, but please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the school, are in the area and would like an informal tour (not that I know my way around yet...), etc. If you PM me then I'll get an e-mail notice.

Anyone else find it odd that the Assistant Dean for Admissions and Recruitment for Loyola is a JD and not a MD?

I thought it was interesting too! But you will never, ever, meet a more amazing dean than Dean Jones. If you interview, make sure to stop by and say hi (he really enjoys chatting with applicants). If you're into sports, say so--the guy loves sports, and you'll make an instant friend (as long as you're not a White Sox fan!).

Personally I'm an Oakland fan...

I want my secondary already!!!!!!!!!11😡

It doesnt seem too long if your REALLY interested in the school. I just submitted! :xf: on this one, awesome school.

I actually think it's my best secondary so far...probably the most well-written essays.

Agreed. After filling this out, compared to essays for the other schools, I feel Loyola has a complete view of who I am as a person, and I appreciate a school that is looking for a full view of their potential students. Now, time to sit back and wait, and pray that they like my complete package enough to invite me out for an interview :xf:

yah while i found them a pain at first i sorta liked them somewhat...as i think when schools ask for long essays like this, it really helps us applicnats who are more average and we can explain things that can make up for the fact e may only have like a 3.6 and 30 mcat instead of a 3.9 and 36+ mcat. The schools who ask for nothing tend to scare me as i feel they base everything on numbers...which doesnt bode well for the not 36+ people 🙁

this is a killer secondary!!! i'm having to re-write a lot of things here rather than being able to copy & paste.

has anybody whose been verified in the last week been sent a secondary?

When I got my secondary on the 23rd, I called because of a sign in error, they told me we were the first batch of ppl to get them, and that basically they send out the secondaries in batches every week. so it takes them basically forever. Dont worry youll get yours soon!

just got it 😀 i was totally losing hope for this!

damn there is a secondary party up in my computer!!

the one month thing though, i dont like =/

i got verfied mid july and i still havent received the secondary. So annoying. Could it be possible that they screen you, not based on numbers?

think it is okay to repeat from the PS for the first question? This is the first secondary that I can kind of reuse other essays for. Score.
loyola has so many essays you are bound to repeat yourself somewhere in those 9 or w/e they have...i always felt that you can re use some info but just add to it and dont copy and paste...as that looks bad. If you use the same expereince but expand on it, or add a different facet to it, i dont see how that is wrong for something like loyola.

complete here. they were so fast!

As a California resident, i believe it is rougly $20,000+ cheaper per year to attend a UC over loyola. i did not mean to imply that i have a better shot at a UC than at loyola (or vice versa). i also hope that my post did not offend you or anyone else. what i meant by my post is that i have a few schools to which i am very attracted (UCs, Michigan, etc) and the rest are all on the same level in terms of their appeal. in posting my questions, i was hoping there was something about loyola that i might've missed. i'm sorry if it came off as pompous. any school in the US is a great place to be. i wish everyone the best of luck at loyola and other institutions!

that is all. i just wanted to clarify. thanks for listening.

lol. My bad! There are just so many "pompous" lil' SDNers running around on here. I understand exactly what you're saying now...and no, your post didn't offend (or at least not me), just thought if you are debating this much applying somewhere, perhaps you shouldn't...

But, I'm a very decisive person and when I have to debate internally whether to do something, I usually take it as a sign not to - but that's just me!

Best wishes!

Finally got this one, took them long enough.🙄

mailed this one in today. definitely the most complicated one so far.

finally got it! need to submit electronic and send via snail mail? i don't get it... if they take our money electronically, why not our applications?

Is there any downside to calling the number and asking to verify our status? By that I mean, is it possible they get annoyed if they get a ton of phone calls asking the same thing?

I'm just sick of waiting. Been verified since the end of June and still nothing. It's rolling admissions, which is what worries me - we're being put at an unfair disadvantage compared to the lucky few who got theirs already.

did everyone use all the 25 lines? i havent started but i dont think i can pull of near 25 lines for all the prompts without repeating myself :lame:

i used anywhere from 15-25...i think on maybe 2 prompts i came close to the limit, one i was at 26 for...most were like 15-20 though. No need to write extra if its not needed. I think they are just reallly making a strong effort to get to know you and want to make sure that you have the space if needed to do so. Like for applicants like us from strange/disadvantaged backrounds, we probably have more to explain then the typical white suburban kid whos parents are both doctors and has had the nice easy life you know?

I did, but I also always have a lot to say. lol. It's definitely not necessary. As I'm sure people have said time and time again - it's quality over quantity!

 hopefully after i finish all the other ones i'll have enough to fill them up with my life story i gotta kinda hurry up though 😛

thanks, i have a lot to say too but when it comes down to writing it im illiterate :meanie:

btw i just learned how to multi-quote the easier way loll am i totally cool or what?!

Hey does anyone know what exactly they mean with the double-spaced paragraphs? Does this mean a blank line separating each paragraph or a double-spaced indentation? I am all spaced out after this one..
