hi guys and gals....i'm a 4th year at stritch and can answer most questions about the school not related to admissions and less so about the first two years (b/c i'm somewhat removed from all that).
I will say that safety at the school is a complete NON-issue. Technically stritch's address is listed as maywood, but the whole hospital and VA complex is almost a city in itself isolated from the surrounding areas by two major, four-lane roads....effectively sealing it off from the areas with crime. To get inside the campus you really need a car or to take the bus. Can't really walk to it (which is why any criminals in the surrounding areas don't come on the actual campus). On surgery I would come in at 4:30 am, park on campus and walk 10 minutes to the hospital without so much as looking over my shoulder. And unless you live in maywood, most of the time you won't even pass through any of the rougher neighborhoods in your car to get to where you'll most likely be living (oak park, forest park, westchester, etc.).
BUT, being in an economically disadvantaged area in addition to still being in proximity to the affluent suburbs to the east and west allow us to attract patients from all socioeconomic backgrounds, something that i've really come to enjoy in my clinical years. Also, despite the economy, Loyola doesn't turn people away no matter how poor they are. I'm proud of that as a student considering some of the policies other notable institutions in chicago have adopted.
basically, i've been very happy with my education and loyola has gotten me where I need to go and more.
