I got the invite on the first night, and those were already blocked off. I think those dates are not yet available. In the email it said they only make select dates available to keep pace with their accelerated cycle. Their goal must be to fill up all the first few dates before opening other dates. It would seem weird to me if the first four dates were available, but not the last two of the month.

Well the 25th was open when I checked this morning but not when I checked this afternoon

That is really weird. Maybe the 25 did fill up. When I registered for my interview I only had the first four dates available. I'm pretty sure that means I am just a "test interview" for Mayo. They want to use me and the other early interviewees as a warm up for their ADCOMS, then in a couple of weeks they will invite the applicants they really want. 🙁

if you've only visited one/very few medical schools, how can you say it's the best place? or the place for you? that makes so sense. those tours can really sway you if you are gullible and willing to believe anything
I agree, some of the obsessive infatuation with Mayo in this thread seems a little over the top. Almost cultish, I dare say. It's an amazing school with a lot to offer, but it's not exactly Mayo or Bust either. In the end, we're going to med school for the patients, and I don't really give a crap about a free Dell laptop and parking.

Damn it, I wrote a long post in response to this, and my computer decided to crap out on me when I posted it. It ended with this:

😍😍Mayo or bust 2009-2010😍😍:meanie:

Oh well. Basically, I agree with the main point about it not being Mayo or bust. I am very passionate about all of my schools. Some more than others obviously, otherwise I wouldn't have a top choice. With that said though, I would be very happy at any school I am applying to, and in fact some of the opportunities offered at my second and third choices rival those at Mayo. In then end, I will jump and scream like a little girl if I get accepted to any medical school.

No, it's cool... I'm excited about Mayo too, and would scream like a little girl louder than you if I got in, but I just wanted to point out that most medical schools in the US are more similar to each other than they are different. Even on the tours and interviews, med schools all pretty much say the same thing. I love the history, mission, selectives and small class size though for Mayo.

This stuff you listed here AND the location are what sell me on Mayo (a couple other things too). A lot of people I know think I am crazy (and I may be), but I would absolutely love to live in a small to mid-sized midwestern city. I am ready for a change from the southwest and big city living. I think I will be happy in that kind of environment, and if I am not then it is only four years. If you look at my MDapps, you can tell that I am clearly looking in the midwest mostly.

BAAAHHHHH!!! Interview Invite here as well!!!

Congrats!

Last night, at the standard 2:30ish EST, I received my interview confirmation. It looks like the interviews are before the tour and before we meet with students. I was hoping I would be able to develop some questions over the day to then ask my interviewer at the end.

Thanks! And the interview information is good to know. It would definitely be nice to build up a few questions throughout the day, but the benefit of having the interviews in the morning is that it'll be easier to enjoy the rest of the day. If I interviewed in the afternoon, I'd be too nervous to think about anything but that during the other activities! 🙂

I get butterflies just thinking about it. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure this is going to be my first interview (would be nice to have a bit of practice before Mayo)...yikes!

I get butterflies just thinking about you guys having interviews at Mayo and my primary isn't even verified yet!

Oh wow, sorry, that sounds much different written out than it did in my head! I'm really embarrassed! What I mean is that I'm very grateful for the early interview, but it is exactly this that makes me nervous...

You shouldn't be embarrassed. That's completely understandable. I think I would rather have a warm-up interview before Mayo too.

I'm still waiting on a LOR request, too. I got their primary confirmation email 6/25, things aren't looking so hot.

Yeah, I think it will be nice to get the interview out of the way and then relax. I can't wait to tour the area again; it is magnificent.

Practice before interviewing at Mayo sounds nice to me too. I was somehow fortunate enough to be able to schedule my Pitt interview before Mayo. The problem is that it is only 2 days before I interview at Mayo. I hope that doesn't turn out to be a problem.

Do forgive if this is redundant, but what are the odds to receiving an interview invitation after paying the $100 fee for Mayo?

I think it is something like 5-10% chance. If you get the LOR request, it is much more likely that you will get an interview. I don't remember the numbers exactly, but they were posted somewhere in this thread earlier.

After the LOR request, it would be around a 31-37% chance of getting an interview since ~800 get a LOR request and ~250-300 get interviewed.

Just got my primary verified and an email from Mayo. The link for the payment is broken though, what's up with that...

When did you submit your AMCAS? I'm still waiting for mine to get verified.

They must not want your money; don't pay. Actually, just try again a little later. If it still doesn't work then maybe send them an email. It might depend on the type of browser you are using. I used internet explorer.

Still waiting? That sucker is going to come through any day now. How long has it been, like four weeks?

Actually, it's only been two weeks, but it seems like four. I'm so tired of waiting. I want to be able to pay Mayo my $100!

complete on 7/16, still waiting.

Anyone completed on 7/10 still waiting? :scared:

Not exactly, but I was complete 7/17 and still waiting! :corny:

Yes 😕 Please show me some love mayo 😍

I am still waiting too.

same here

complete on 7/16, still waiting.

For every one still waiting, keep your hopes up! Last we heard only 25 invites had gone out, so it is likely that only a few more have gone out since then. I'm sure they are still getting everything situated, and you will hear back before too long. No disrespect to those who have been rejected by Mayo, but it seems that Mayo knew right away that they didn't want those people, so if you are still alive after being complete for a week or two that is definitely a good thing.

So I received a LOR request on 7/16 but haven't gotten an e-mail saying they received them/I'm officialliy complete. My LORs were already assigned through AMCAS before I submitted my primary so they just have to download them. Is this wierd? Anybody else in this situation?

takes about a week after the request to get the LOR receipt email from Mayo. I got the LOR request on 7/2 and then got the receipt email on 7/10.

Hello all, thought I'd update you on how our first week has been going.

The first three days were orientation. They were very condensed from last year, but it has been fun. On day two, we had the Dean's Welcome Picnic hosted at the Plummer house, which was a nice chance to talk with the deans of the medical school. Several free lunches have also been nice.

Highlights of orientation include getting extra scholarship money, laptops, free gym memberships to their amazing gym and multiple talks telling us how smart we are.

The extra scholarship money is something they want to do every year but are unsure if they can. Basically, they were given money by the state of Minnesota and decided to pass it on to the students. If that isn't a commitment to the students I don't know what is. They could have pocketed it for whatever, but instead passed it on to the students.

The laptops are Dell Latitude E6409's. They are alright but are loaded with Mayo software which slows performance significantly. I do enjoy the 4+ hour battery life, though.

The gym memberships are around $16 dollars a month (if you go 3x or more a week, more per month if you go less), but Mayo decided to pay for ours for two years while we have the time to use them. I thought it was nice of them.

The past two days have been the beginning of classwork, which still seems a bit surreal. We have had many people give presentations about public health problems, which have been pretty interesting if you're into that kind of thing. The professors are all pretty good, and work to make the material interesting and often humorous. Many of the talks could have been hellishly boring, but good professors made a big difference.

We also received information about selectives and travel stipends. Yes, we get travel stipends. $4800 over our four years that are paid in block grants of $1200 for an international experience and $600 for a domestic experience. If you need more or less they don't care, you get $1200 or $600 and that's that. The grants can be used for:

1. Away rotations at Mayo Jacksonville and Mayo Arizona. What's nice is they provide housing and flights in addition to the $600, which really eliminates any cost associated with an away rotation.

2. Presenting research at a conference. Only one person per project can present, but it's still cool.

3. Doing work in an underserved area of the US or abroad.

This is more restrictive in years past, but let's be honest, what other schools give you travel money? None that I know of. So it's a pretty sweet deal that encourages people to go abroad, present research and see other Mayo sites.

Selectives are extremely flexible. You can do just about anything related to medicine. They have pre-arranged ones in:

1. Literature in medicine
2. Surgery techniques
3. Shadowing in anything under the sun
4. Different cultures in healthcare (or something like that)
5. Many service trips abroad
6. Many other things I do not recall

Or you can arrange your own. People have done:

1. Shadowed Mayo's CEO
2. Shadowed the physician for the Chicago Bulls (I think it was the Bulls)
3. Followed around a EMT ski patrol people in Colorado
4. Many other things I do not recall

Alright, well that's all for now. Much more has happened but I'm sick of typing. I'm sure premedIA (who sucks) or cast128 (who is obsessed with the temperature of the beaks of toucans) can fill in my gaps or correct anything I got wrong.

Awesome post, DoctorDeMan. Keep them coming. It's making me more and more excited about Mayo. If I get in there, it will be the best day of my life. 😍

Hi everyone. Quick question, sorry if this is irrelevant, but my payment was received on July 12th, and I haven't heard anything about the LOR request yet or a rejection notice, so do I still have a chance? My letters are already submitted on AMCAS so I would just have to download them. Just curious, thanks!

I would say you do. From what I have seen and from what others have commented on in this thread, if Mayo doesn't want you, they tend to reject you fairly quickly. Since you are still in the running, they may be giving your app a good look. Good luck:luck:

Its really long, look at post #783 is you want to read it all (I did!).

I think what I have taken away from your post and the other posts from the 1st year students is that Mayo has a lot of the little things that add up to make a big difference. I know most medical schools are more similar than different, and that is mostly true with Mayo as well (you are going to have to learn anatomy, etc.). I am quite jealous of you guys who are there. I would love to join you next year.

I definitely agree with this. If you are doing good if you are waiting more than a week. I know that it sucks waiting, but it is better then knowing immediately that they don't want you.

I'm waiting for October dates to open. Can't interview in September. I'm also super excited to go. Congrats to all who got an invite! I didn't expect it so very =]]] right now.

I was worried because of my below average MCAT for Mayo, so this invite gives me some confidence that they must like something in my app beyond numbers =]. So for those with below Mayo's average MCAT...there's hope!

ConfusedChild, you MUST be confused! Do you own an MSAR? I highly suggest it, and hope that you aren't still applying to 46 schools--that's crazyness! Mayo's average MCAT, according to the MSAR, is a 32. That being said, Mayo is NOT all about numbers and is known for taking a more holistic look at applicants. They must have seen something other than your MCAT score or GPA that they liked in your app (though those are amazing too). Congrats on the interview invite!

You'll definitely get in multiple places this cycle--and I will be AMAZED if you fill out all of those secondaries. Do you know of a tree that grows money that the rest of us don't?

If you haven't received a LOR request from Mayo, check your primary app and make sure that you haven't incorrectly typed-in your MCAT date...I took my MCAT May 1st but accidentally put May 2nd on AMCAS...I feel so silly.

I had the same problem with UC Davis.

Good luck : )

I do own one...MSAR2011. Median is 35. I think the previous year was probably 32. I don't know much about MSAR2010. Hahah..and money doesn't grow on trees for me. I make it this summer at biotech internship and throughout the last three years in college, and a huge chunk is going to apps sadly. As for 46 schools, I've seen too many people from CA apply 30+ and have to repeat it again - just really wanted to get in first time around.

Wow...best of luck mate.

Yep, mine is a 2010, I guess I can eat my words! But I don't see why you wouldn't get in this cycle, your app is solid! Good luck 🙂 :luck:

I can't even imagine applying to 46 schools. I am tired of secondaries and I am only applying to 11 schools. Although, at this point I have been able to use some of the essays more than ones, which is nice.
