I have tried to not pick a favorite school, because chance of admission is so low (like what, 2% at Mayo or something crazy) but the more I learn about Mayo, the harder that is becoming... after I interview I'm sure it will only get worse... and I think chances of admission after interview are only 25%, which is pretty low considering everyone they interview they liked enough to invite.

Its hard enough as it is, but after the interview will be much harder I think. Take a look at last year's thread, and you will see some of the insanity it caused people. I think one person was SDN2013 or something, and he went nuts.

If you have reached the interview stage, you can just be happy the you are not fighting against the intial 1.5% acceptance rate.

I started reading last year's thread and couldn't stop; it's addictive! I really have to stop reading Mayo stuff or else I might go insane. I'm glad they accelerated their schedule a bit this year.

Anyone able to give info on what the interview is like?

It seems open-file, 2 interviews ~1 hr each, and relaxed (based on SDN), but do they ask ethical questions? Healthcare reform? Or is it more, explain your research or what are some of your hobbies?

Fee received e-mail 8/4
Not selected Pre-LOE e-mail today, 8/23 1:30AM
🙁 Wanted them to see my LOE's too.

For those with crazy theories about going to the guided visit helping, I attended one. I guess I'm not torn they didn't think they would like my application better than ~97 other pre-meds or whatever the stat may be.
Good luck for the people still in the running!:luck:

I would be losing my mind if they had accelerated their cycle. I think last year the interview invites started around this time of year.

I would suggest you check out the interview feedback from here (it seems like maybe you already did this). If I recall correctly, they are open-file, relaxed, and maybe an ethical question or a healthcare reform question. Honestly, I expect a healthcare reform question at all of my interviews.

The interview format will be changing this year-->I have heard that interviews will be around 30 minutes instead of an hour to allow more time for other things and getting out of Rochester earlier.

As for the question types, I think I was asked every single thing you asked about. My health care policy question was to compare and contrast government interventions in smoking laws and trans fats and talk about the role of the medical system in those changes.

That's scary.

thats a strange question. anyone have a good response? i suppose the government has attacked both smoking and trans fat. smoking with taxes. trans fat not as much (no taxes). medical system has voiced opposition to both of course.

I was thinking more in terms of bans - no smoking in or around federal buildings, the ban on trans fats in NY restaurants - and also required labeling - although the warning label on tobacco products explicitly states the health risk involved, whereas the mandated labels on trans fat products only state that the products contain trans fat without mentioning specific health risks. It seems that the medical system's responsibility is to educate (both the general public and policy makers).

This is way a more involved question than I would have expected for an interview! Wowzers.

Hi
I added Mayo last week and I just paid my fee like last friday. I am not sure if I have any shot at Mayo but I was wondering would I be considered pretty late to be adding Mayo right now? I know that many interview invites has gone out, and are most slots filled out at this point now? Thanks for input.

Interviews will be going until December and probably less than a fourth of them have gone out. You're doing just fine.

About how long does it take from verification until they ask for the fee...? I've been waiting about a week and haven't heard anything.

I was verified back in June but just added Mayo on 8/20, and got a fee request email on 8/21. I don't know if it's any different if you were just recently verified.

btw, I just finished reading through all 1200+ posts. You guys are so crazy (in a good way), especially Irkoehle. I wish more school threads had first-years posting about their experience though; schools should ask students to do this because it really does sell the school more.

It's kinda fun to read back and see how we were first just getting introduced to Mayo, then slowly fell in love with it, and then had this super long waiting period of Fee-LORS-Interview. And every time we'd get something new, we'd be like little kids on Christmas. 🙂

I wonder if med schools would go so far as to conduct viral marketing via SDN, because this Mayo thread would be a perfect example of how to do it. Each post by a first-year is followed by a few 😍 and a couple :xf::xf: and sacrificing bulls to the Mayo gods.

Oh god, I don't want to go back and read my posts. I imagine I would be embarrassed, but I blame Mayo for putting me into a state of insanity. I have learned to control my insanity, and use it for good.

If you get accepted and decide to attend, you should reread them on the eve of moving out to Rochester. It'll remind you why you're so excited to go there. Also, save a bit of the magic from the posts for winter... you may need the motivation in the Minnesota cold!

I got the request for letters from Mayo finally. Hopefully it all goes well!

I hope I am so lucky as to live out this dream you have set out for me.

Rejected pre-LOR last night. I submitted the fee August 6.🙁

dang, when did the last interview come out?

i was wondering that too. i passed the "12 days since my complete e-mail" two nights ago. oh man i hope i get an invite. i keep waking up around 2 in the morning by accident. this suuuucks. at least i see they haven't been neglecting me....i hope

What is this twelve day rule?

What is this twelve day rule?

mayo used to get back to within 2-12 days, but with more and more apps coming in, its very likely the turnaround time will increase.

please Mayo! :xf: good news!

i wouldn't get too worked up about the time they spend on an application. obviously as they get more apps it may take longer to work through them. I wouldn't consider 12 days as a necessary omen. take a breather 🙂

Can someone copy paste the rejection email post-LOR...so I know what to expect in my inbox?

Actually you wouldn't have to look hard. The subject line is "Mayo Medical School - Not Selected"

...self-explanatory, lol

No!!!! I never want to see that thing! We need positive energy around here. Lots of these :luck::luck::luck::luck: one of these:soexcited:, and maybe one of these:biglove:

I'm going to start sending musicaldna emails from all kinds of addresses with "Mayo" in the sender line and "Mayo Medical School - Not Selected" in the subject to freak em out 😀

I think you've finally cracked. I knew it was coming... just didn't expect it so soon

hahaha i like

Btw for those wondering, I got my invite 15 days after LOR request and this was 10 days ago, so its very reasonable this 12 day rule has extended to about 15-18 by now, who knows. Like I have tried to train myself, never expect a rejection until you get one, makes life easier.

Good Luck to everyone in different stages of the waiting game!:luck: :xf:

I am a pessimist. If everyone in this thread started having positive energy........

I am sure Mayo can't afford to give out a thousand invites just to SDN members.

I'm going to start sending musicaldna emails from all kinds of addresses with "Mayo" in the sender line and "Mayo Medical School - Not Selected" in the subject to freak em out 😀

Why don't you send one tonight so that I am relieved of this waiting game....although my eagerness level is zero for Mayo already. I know what's coming at me....

I think you've finally cracked. I knew it was coming... just didn't expect it so soon

According to my wife I cracked long before applying to med school. I think its just been a long day.

Hey everyone, I just decided to apply here. I know it is a little late, but we shall see. I don't want to read over 25 pages of the excitement, but how strict is their screening? Like, do we know cutoff stats at all before I drop 100 to learn it was a complete waste?

LOL has your wife gotten over your Mayo excitement?

Actually, my family seems to be more excited about med school than I am. I know here on SDN I act like I am crazy excited, but I'm not really. I have gotten over my Mayo unproductive Mayo excitement, and channeled it into preparing for the interview. I think my parents are just excited, because they're like "Wow! where did this guy come from? He was such a screw up in high school..."

his wife is probably the one pushing him onto SDN b/c she's tired of hearing about it all day. LOL jk jk

The initial screening before the fee request is GPA*10+MCAT>60. If you meet this, you will get the fee request. Once they have your money, they will look at your application, and rumor had it that they don't read your PS until after an LOR request. If they like your app, that's when you will get an LOR request, which is the last major step before interview invite.

So for MSTP it seems different than the regular MD-only admissions. About a week after I was verified, they sent me an e-mail wanting money, letters, and an "info sheet." Just letting anyone know who hadn't already heard back that it's not the same process!

I'll agree that they're pretty quiet for mstp, at least for now (probably since they don't send interview invites until late november....sigh). The only thing i've heard back after I sent everything in was a verification that one of my letters was missing - the only school that wrote to tell me that! I had the prof write it (he thought since he wrote a different letter also, he didn't have to do this one...wrong!) and now it's all good.:xf:

After they take my processing fee, is there another step before interview invites? Like a secondary or something besides an LOR request which should be filled since it is AMCAS based anyway.
