Rejection this morning. Game over! Good luck everyone.

Sorry to hear, Rach. You'll be fine though. I got the LOR request maybe 3 weeks ago and am still not complete...

yay, LOR request this morning!! hopefully it's not too late!

yay, LOR request this morning!! hopefully it's not too late!

Good to see LOR requests are still going out. I thought this thread was going to be dead until mid-October after we lost Rach.

For those who have interviewed, what are you guys doing to stay busy until mid-October? I keep finding myself daydreaming about getting accepted early to any medical school (although Mayo is my top choice), and its distracting me from school work.

I'm so anxious to hear from Mayo. I was complete 9/24. How long does it usually take? What are they big on? Service and research?

LOR request this morning!

Low-end GPA and MCAT, but strong ECs and LORs....

Hope it's not too late to be considered for an interview here!

I would love to get an acceptance to a school on the 15th too, Mayo also being my first choice. But how many people will have been ranked by then, maybe 100 or so (probably somewhat fewer)? And they're only accepting 7-8 people on the 15th if I remember correctly. So I don't even allow myself to daydream about such things. But yeah I actually think the time is going by pretty quickly. It will be that time of the month soon enough.

I think service and leadership are key things at Mayo. They really want their students to become future world leaders and look for that potential in applicants (at least that's what it seems like to me).

Congrats! When did you submit your AMCAS to Mayo? I have a friend who recently added them, so I am curious.

I agree that it is a long shot to even get accepted to Mayo and the thought of an early acceptance is even crazier. My mind has a mind of its own though, and so I dream. I hadn't heard the number of people Mayo will accept on October 15th, but 7 or 8 out of the 100 interviewees so far is a pretty decent number. Oh well, its almost Saturday again, which means I can distract myself all day with college football...🙄

LOR request today, too. Sadly, that'll probably be as far as I get here since my PS was pretty weak.

I added Mayo around early-mid Sept. I really wrote my heart out in my PS and am hoping that my ECs, unusual story, and solid recs will help compensate for lower-end numbers. Good luck to everyone still waiting.

Well Mayo is the kind of school that won't let your numbers make or break you, so that part is good. It also seems that creating a unique, diverse class is very important to them as well, so an "unusual" story/past may help too (as long as it is not a really bad kind of unusual).

For all of us waiting: :luck: and be 😎

I really hope that you are right. I got the LOR request yesterday also. My GPA is really high, my MCAT wasn't so good though. 🙁

I just wanted to say that I have really enjoyed meeting Mayo interviewees so far. As a group, you have all been awesome. Just as a little encouragement, Mayo interviewees historically have about a 95% chance of being accepted somewhere, so if you have gotten an interview here you are virtually certain to one day be called Doctor.

Best of luck and enjoy the application/interview cycle!

By the way, please put interview feedback up for others who interview later. I found that to be immensely helpful and I'm sure others will too.

A 95% chance of an acceptance somewhere sounds nice, but I'm sure 100% of us just want an acceptance to Mayo. l had a blast meeting the students I met, too bad PremedIowa was too busy.

I don't feel like I have seen many posts from interviewees after those of us from the first day, so I hope everyone else had as good an experience as we did.

It's weird that I'll know if I'm into U of M (my current dream school) before I interview here (an additional possible dream school.)

rank me mayo!!!!
(anyone who interviewed 9/21 or later been ranked yet? I think we should hear this thursday. i hope 🙂 )

does anyone know how long it might take between the LOR request and notification that the LORs have been downloaded? ~1 wk?

I think they would have to review you guys this Thursday. Otherwise those 7-8 people some one said they accept on October 15th will be like half of the people reviewed thus far.

It took a week back when they first started doing LOR requests, so I would guess it is taking longer now.

I interviewed before then and have not yet been ranked. So I assume they haven't gotten to the 9/21 date yet, if they do them in chronological order. I imagine they spend a good amount of time on every interviewee so it takes time.

I am pretty sure people from the first day weren't reviewed yet, so I don't think it is 100% chronological, for instance if one of your interviewers can't be there. It makes me wonder how many applicants they reviewed that first day.

ahh, that is a good point. I forgot about that. both of your interviewers having to be there throws in another variable into the mix, beyond just when you had your interview. well, it's out of my hands now 🙂

I think the only reason I remember that is because my student host told me she didn't get reviewed initially and had to wait. Regardless, as you said, it is out of our hands anyways. I doubt the difference between a rejection or acceptance is two weeks between when we get reviewed anyways.

Yeah, we just have to go about our lives and try to not go crazy over this. Easier said than done, lol
All I can say is that come October 15th there are going to be some really happy people out there 🙂 :xf:

True. There are also going to be a bunch of neurotic people wondering if Mayo has their correct phone number or not.

hahaha, funny you mention that- a couple of days ago I logged back into amcas for the first time in over a month just to make sure the phone number I had entered in there was correct, lol.

Hey, that's neat to hear. Out of curiosity, why do you think that is? (the 95% statistic)

I get the feeling that Mayo likes "interesting" applicants with a balanced application, and it's obviously extremely competitive to get to the interview stage, but I'm curious to hear more about what exactly it means and what they look for in their students.

About the 95% statistics, Mayo is one of the most selective schools to get an interview, so if you get an interview there and applied broadly you are likely to have gotten several other interviews, and get in somewhere. Same can be said for other top schools though, I think, unless if you got a courtesy interview at say Cornell, for being a Cornell alumnus. There are people who only get appointed at Mayo and no where else, but they are in the minority (even less than 5%).

I don't know exactly what Mayo looks for, but the things below are among them:
Caring for patients (patients come first)
Being able to explain things in everyday language (eg. research)
Maturity
Charisma

And the fact their average gpa is 3.9. I would also say they care about your grades too

And the fact their average gpa is 3.9. I would also say they care about your grades too

Yeah, I have to agree here. Mayo says that once you pass their screening, MCAT/grades don't matter that much, but the fact is, numbers don't lie. It's no coincidence that their GPA/MCAT medians are right alongside the rest of the top schools. I'm assuming that they play a pretty significant role even after the interview. They might not be make-or-break (as is the case at almost every school), but I think it's somewhat disingenuous to claim that they make no difference (not that anyone here has said that per se) when the average accepted GPA is a 3.9, MCAT is 35, or whatever.

I am so confused about the number. On the website they always say they take 50 students. But the actual statistic always ended but to be 42. I think the break down is 34 MD, 6 MD/PhD and 2 some six year program. So does that mean if you are applying to MD program and get an interview, you still have about 34/250 chance, which is like 1/6 (assuming they admit 42 peopel for a class size of 34, because I don't think many people will turn Mayo down.........) This is so scary...can somebody explain?.......

My understanding is that each class has 50 people. 42 of those people are MD only, 6 are MD/PhD, and 2 are OMFS (oral and maxillofacial surgery). Looking at just the MD only program, Mayo winds up handing out acceptances to roughly 60-70 students to fill these 42 spots. It's nuts how few people turn down an acceptance to Mayo (but I can definitely see why that is the case). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Mayo is the most selective med school in the country. Stanford is up there too. Anyways, where are you in the application process? I wish you all the best, man!

Stanford is the most selective, Mayo is 2nd. although both are below 2%... I think only 7% of Mayo applicants get an interview

I feel like that is more a factor of the smaller class sizes than actual selectivity. Even though schools like Harvard and Hopkins accept a higher % of people doesn't make it less selective than mayo is.

I don't think anyone is saying that grades and MCAT don't matter at Mayo, but I would agree that they're not as much of a deal breaker as at some other highly selective top schools. I also would agree that it seems that once you've been invited for an interview, you should assume that your MCAT and gpa passed muster, and the rest is up to you and the rest of your application. For some reason I haven't been able to get mdapplicants' web site working for awhile now, but if you can see my app, you'll see that my stats are not nose bleed high. In fact, I know a couple of people in my class with MCATs around mine. I haven't taken a gpa poll, but I would bet the bar may be a little higher for gpa than MCAT given that the MCAT is solely reflective of one day's test, and a gpa shows a longer trend (albeit there is a lot of variability among schools, majors, classes, etc.).

But really, this is all pretty much moot. Applying to Mayo, like applying elsewhere, is predominantly a crap shoot. I think the point was just that some schools, like Mayo, are more likely to give a little leeway when it comes to numbers if there are other aspects of your application that balance it out. On the other hand, there are other schools (*cough*WashU*cough*) that seem to have more of a "you must be this tall to go on this ride" attitude when it comes to numbers, regardless of the rest of your application.

Now, to get back to how awesome Mayo is, I've got to run to go hear a noon talk by Dr. Cortese on the ethics of health care reform.

Phoenix,

I'll give you $10 and a free dinner if you can let us know who will be getting those first phone calls before October 15th...

The wait is hard, but hang in there. If I recall correctly 6-8 people got appointed on Oct 15 2008.

Yeah, the wait is hard, but really, I just happen to have $10 and some food that I wouldn't mind trading for some knowledge...

🙂

I mean, if I were serious about someone snooping for us, it would have to AT LEAST involve a $20...

And I just don't have that kind of cash around at the moment.

I don't think Mayo students know until after you know.

I think you're reading bamtuba the wrong way; he was joking. Also, if he needs an extra $10, I just happen to have a ten in my wallet.

Har. Sorry I can't take you up on that offer!

Mmmm....dinner. Now, if you were talking about some authentic Texas BBQ brisket, you might have a deal. Not sure how you'd get it to Rochester though! 😉

Teh Internets aren't the best for my sense of humours...

If I had the deep pit smoker, then I would say give me a couple of days and you'd have yourself a deal! Getting it to you though...another story all together. 😉
