Got LOR request in late Sept, still no confirmation they've been received...am I in for a long wait?
Come on, Mayo!
Come on, Mayo!
so someone said earlier that acceptances will continue to go out every two weeks. is this correct?

I seriously freaking hope so. I also remember seeing that posted on here. I also hope that means 2 weeks from the 15th, which would be more like a week and a half...oh well, I think I will try to treat this hold as a waitlist, so I don't stress myself anymore over this. If for some crazy reason they decide to pull me in off of the hold list, great, but I'm not expecting anything...

I feel the same way, man. I stressed over this WAY too much the past few days. It was borderline unhealthy. Obviously I am disappointed with this hold, but life is beautiful and life goes on. 🙂
I called late last week, b/c I'm in the same boat. Marcy told me that they tend to download the letters about 4 weeks after they were requested, because they're getting a little backed up and they want to review the files they already have before opening more for review. Hope that helps!
I just got the call!
I've posted a bunch of times about this, but it is NOT the kiss of death to get the hold email. There are a bunch of people in my class who received that hold notice, and they're here, so please keep that in perspective. You will continue to be considered each time they give out acceptances.
For those who were wondering, they gave out 10 acceptances today. Lucky ducks!
Thanks everybody!
I'm not going to lie, I am shocked.
I am also amazingly humbled that I have been given this opportunity (not that I have not been so for just being accepted ANYWHERE, let alone Mayo), and I don't think the excitement is going to wear off any time soon.
The roller coaster that is this process sucks, to be honest, but I just wanted to repeat that I really do believe everyone I met at the place has a GREAT shot at getting in somewhere, and I believe, to a dream school. I would imagine the other interview groups were just as cool as mine, so ditto for those of you who I have not met. Hopefully I will get to meet you all come summer. 🙂
I hope everyone here gets the news they are looking for soon!
again everyone!
🙂

I got the call this morning as well. I'm really looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible. I just recently started lurking around SDN, and didn't realize what a great resource it is 🙂
Congrats to bamtuba, itsalovestory, and all the other acceptances. All the rest of you seem like awesome people too, and I wish you the best of luck in the rest of the application process. I hope you get in!
Mayo ranks all the students on a scale of 1-5. Every time the admissions committee meets, they look at all the top ranked candidates and decide how many and who to give appointments to. If you are ranked near the top but just missed the cutoff for the previous cycle, there is an excellent chance that you will be very closely considered for an appointment every time the committee meets. So more or less everyone is in the running every time the committee meets to send out acceptances. So no, there is no advantage to interviewing later or any such thing. I think somewhere around 50% of my class got in from hold status, so plenty of time left.
Best of luck to those put on hold. You still have a great chance to get in here and even if you do not, there are a lot of great medical schools in the country. The stats prove again and again that who you are matters is infinitely more important than where you are from.

try not to sweat it too much. in the end, your dream is to be a doctor, not to go to mayo. concentrate on your other schools and let the mayo run its course.
It's too bad we can't find out our rank. If I'm like a 1 or 2, I might as well just stop trying now and consider myself rejected haha.
It would seriously be nice to know if we had no chance, but I think from their viewpoint it would create a lot of stress for those ranked 4 or 5 who don't get in. I really would like to know my ranking though.
dang, that seems like a lot of acceptances already handed out (for the relative class size). how often do they meet again? (redundant question i assume, but way too many pages)
the buzz is they will hand out acceptances roughly every two weeks or so. when are you interviewing?
Yeah I agree. It would almost be easier if they did in fact reject people now who they knew would just not have a chance, for whatever reason. Then if you were on hold, you legit knew you were going to continue to be seriously considered. Maybe they just love getting letters of interest soooo much that they want to get as many as possible haha. Doubt it...
oct. 30th. that means another cycle before i even interview. dam. i wonder how long between the interview and when they decide...
This seems like a very valid point. I mean there has to be at least some people (say those with a ranking of 1) who were not at all what they expected, and thus they know they will not consider them. I do seem to remember something about how the ranking was not 100% definite (maybe I made this up), so that a person ranked 5 would not definitely be chosen before some one ranked as a 4. If I recall correctly, this had to do with Mayo wanting a very unique student body, and so they would look to accept some one who has something new to add to the class that was not already present in their current group of students. If that unique person was a 3 or a 4, then they would be taken before a person ranked 5. If this is in fact true, then this is why they do not release rankings. Imagine if you were ranked 5, and some one came on here ranked 3 or 4 and had been accepted before you. That would create a lot of chaos. Does any one else recall hearing something like this, or am I just completely crazy?

How long after they receive letters of refs do they usually invite people for interviews? I didn't realize they only interview until December.
I feel like this may be another somewhat downer post from me, but as of right now it seems like no one knows how long to expect to wait to hear back on interviews. To further complicate things some one recently said interviews are full up through December fourth. I think if you received the letter of recommendation confirmation that is a good sign. That means that they are caught up enough to start reviewing your application, so hopefully you will know within about a week maybe. Keep in mind this is a total guess on my part, but like I said, I think it is a very good sign that they have confirmed receipt of your LORs. Good luck, I hope you hear back very soon!

Bamtuba, I was so excited to read that you were accepted today!! They made a wise choice. It was fun hanging out with you and meeting your wife this weekend. I hope that you're taking her out somewhere awesome to celebrate!

I recall something along those lines. They didn't go into detail, but they mentioned that the group of 3 deans who make that final decision on who to accept do make those decisions based on factors beyond the ranking, and they seemed to imply that someone with a somewhat lower ranking could still be accepted for diversity reasons.
And I totally agree that there are interviewees who they already know will not be accepted. Why they wait until January to cut those people loose is something I don't understand, but they must have their reasons. Maybe they don't know how stressful this is for us?? That seems hard to believe...
Guys, I know it's hard not to try to dissect everything, and you want to know exactly how this process works so you can better assess your chances and decrease your anxiety and potential for "heartbreak," but you're just going to have to accept that the admissions process is really just a black box from the applicant's standpoint. No school is going to start handing out rankings to applicants before they've even finished interviewing everyone.
While I'm just throwing out my own hypothesis, I would think that since Mayo selects such a small group of interviewees, most are probably ranked 3-5, with the majority probably between 4-5 (with breakdowns like 4.5, 4.9, etc.). I would think a 1 or 2 would be very very rare, but again, that's just my guess. And until EVERYONE has been ranked, they can't possibly start rejecting people with such a small group of interviewees. And given that it is not a strictly numbers based decision (and who would want it to be?), other variables like class diversity (again, that could mean ANY type of diversity) will come into play. So, would you really prefer that they reject you prematurely right now before they get a feel for the body of applicants? Personally, I'd want to stay in the running for as long as they are willing to continue to review me. And I guess that's what I did - getting in last off the alternate list on June 10th my year. Was it stressful? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.
And I think they definitely know how stressful this process is, and I'm guessing that's one of the reasons for compressing the application/interview time line this year.

I happen to think that my interviews went quite well, so I'm just going to treat this whole "hold" thing as an extended opportunity to demonstrate my interest in the school. Thanks for helping put a more positive spin on all of this. It's easy to get negative in the "information vacuum" that we are in, so to speak.
a couple (probably already answered) questions:
1) how many ppl interview per day?
2) every two weeks when they review interviewees, do they interview EVERYONE up to that date? for example, if I interview on 11/9 (purely hypothetical, not my real interview date) and the next committee meeting is 11/13, would I get reviewed? and if I were to be accepted at that point, I could be notified around then?? that would be oh so awesome
Thank you for your response, Phoenix. You're absolutely right, it would not be reasonable to expect them to make rejections when they don't know what their interviewee pool looks like yet. And since they only interview like 6-7% of applicants, I guess they must really like the ones they interview, so unless you bombed the interview, you still probably have a chance at an acceptance somewhere down the line. Hey- so what do you do to demonstrate your interest in the schools? Would it help us if we call/email them to let them know how much we want to go there? or do you think that would bug them?

is there a committee meeting tomorrow?
Glad I could help, Lrkoehle and AyCaramba. I know first hand wat a rough process it is and how easy it is to get caught up in the frenzied anxiety, especially on this site. And moreover when you don't have an acceptance in hand yet, or you just KNOW a certain school is your perfect match. SDN....
