so someone said earlier that acceptances will continue to go out every two weeks. is this correct?

I seriously freaking hope so. I also remember seeing that posted on here. I also hope that means 2 weeks from the 15th, which would be more like a week and a half...oh well, I think I will try to treat this hold as a waitlist, so I don't stress myself anymore over this. If for some crazy reason they decide to pull me in off of the hold list, great, but I'm not expecting anything...

Got LOR request in late Sept, still no confirmation they've been received...am I in for a long wait?

Come on, Mayo!

I'd suggest you contact them. It is getting really late for Mayo, and it would suck if they some how did not get uploaded right or some weird glitch in the system ended up holding you up.

I feel the same way, man. I stressed over this WAY too much the past few days. It was borderline unhealthy. Obviously I am disappointed with this hold, but life is beautiful and life goes on. 🙂

Come on, Mayo!

I called late last week, b/c I'm in the same boat. Marcy told me that they tend to download the letters about 4 weeks after they were requested, because they're getting a little backed up and they want to review the files they already have before opening more for review. Hope that helps!

Yeah, I was put on hold as well, but I feel strangely at peace with it. I'm still going to try to get in since Mayo's my first choice, but interviewing at other schools has reminded me that there are really great opportunities at almost every medical school, and I have to (begrudgingly) acknowledge that other schools do have certain advantages over Mayo (42 MD students per class is really almost too small in my opinion, among other minor things). Visiting a pretty wide range of medical schools has kind of given me the impression that medical schools are more alike than they are different. Going to Mayo would still be amazing though...

Very helpful thank you! I'm at ~3weeks now, so I'll give it another week and hopefully they will be moving right on schedule.

Does anyone know how long we'd wait for an interview invite after LORs are received?

The waiting goes on... and on...

:luck:

Congrats guys!!! :hardy::hardy::hardy: If you have any questions, feel free to email me!

As for the calls, sometimes they're made throughout the day. Also, if they don't catch you when they call, Marcy usually just leaves a message for you to call back, so some people who were busy and haven't had a chance to check their voicemail yet could end up finding out later in the day. At least that's how it's worked in the past.

Regarding the timing, Marcy said that acceptances may go out every two weeks, but it won't be that predictable really, and there will be times when that won't be the case. So I wouldn't mark your calendars two weeks from now or anything....

I really really hate to ask this, but do any of the current students know about how many people are actually accepted after being put on hold? I can't help but be curious as to how out of the running I am here. I know it is not the same as being waitlisted at other schools, so I was just wondering.

As for those who were accepted, go add Mayo to the 2009-2010 accepted thread!

On hold here as well...such a bummer, but it's nice to know we still have a bit of a chance. Huge congrats to all with acceptances!!!

I'll join a bunch of you on the hold list as well. I'm not terribly disappointed, but an acceptance sure would've been exciting!

Congrats to all who were accepted this morning👍

I've posted a bunch of times about this, but it is NOT the kiss of death to get the hold email. There are a bunch of people in my class who received that hold notice, and they're here, so please keep that in perspective. You will continue to be considered each time they give out acceptances.

For those who were wondering, they gave out 10 acceptances today. Lucky ducks!

Thanks everybody!

I'm not going to lie, I am shocked.

I am also amazingly humbled that I have been given this opportunity (not that I have not been so for just being accepted ANYWHERE, let alone Mayo), and I don't think the excitement is going to wear off any time soon.

The roller coaster that is this process sucks, to be honest, but I just wanted to repeat that I really do believe everyone I met at the place has a GREAT shot at getting in somewhere, and I believe, to a dream school. I would imagine the other interview groups were just as cool as mine, so ditto for those of you who I have not met. Hopefully I will get to meet you all come summer. 🙂

I hope everyone here gets the news they are looking for soon!

:luck: again everyone!

🙂

The irony of my avatar strikes me at the moment...

Thanks for all of the SDN help through this mess! (and the same to those who have posted from the other side in the past...)

bamtuba's absolutely right-- the community on here is amazing. Nowhere else will you find a group of people who not only understand exactly what you are going through, but are willing to offer their best to you nonetheless. I hope many of you get off of the hold list (and soon!), and you definitely have me crossing my fingers for you. 🙂

I got the call this morning as well. I'm really looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible. I just recently started lurking around SDN, and didn't realize what a great resource it is 🙂

Congrats to bamtuba, itsalovestory, and all the other acceptances. All the rest of you seem like awesome people too, and I wish you the best of luck in the rest of the application process. I hope you get in!

Bamtuba, I was so excited to read that you were accepted today!! They made a wise choice. It was fun hanging out with you and meeting your wife this weekend. I hope that you're taking her out somewhere awesome to celebrate!

Congrats! Looks like SDN is doing pretty darn good with these acceptances! What is that like 3-4 out of 10?

Sorry in advance, I can't seem to find my notes from the interview day, so I have some sort of dumb questions about this hold status. Does any one remember them saying anything about what the review is like for those of us on hold? What I mean is, for those of us on hold, are we given the same sort of review that some one who has only had the initial review?

Also, if they are going to give out ~10 acceptances every two weeks or so, will those of us on hold be given an equal shot at receiving one? It wouldn't make sense that in this initial review about 100 people would be considered for 10 spots, if for the remainder of the cycle ~40 new people every two weeks are considered for 10 more spots.

Again, I'm sorry for being so neurotic, crazy, obsessive, etc. about this right now, but I promise I will be calmed down by tomorrow. Right now my mind is just running wild.

Thanks.

Mayo ranks all the students on a scale of 1-5. Every time the admissions committee meets, they look at all the top ranked candidates and decide how many and who to give appointments to. If you are ranked near the top but just missed the cutoff for the previous cycle, there is an excellent chance that you will be very closely considered for an appointment every time the committee meets. So more or less everyone is in the running every time the committee meets to send out acceptances. So no, there is no advantage to interviewing later or any such thing. I think somewhere around 50% of my class got in from hold status, so plenty of time left.

Best of luck to those put on hold. You still have a great chance to get in here and even if you do not, there are a lot of great medical schools in the country. The stats prove again and again that who you are matters is infinitely more important than where you are from.

try not to sweat it too much. in the end, your dream is to be a doctor, not to go to mayo. concentrate on your other schools and let the mayo run its course.

It's too bad we can't find out our rank. If I'm like a 1 or 2, I might as well just stop trying now and consider myself rejected haha.

That is the kind of info I was looking for I think. I'm glad to see there is actually still a pretty good shot to come off of the hold list for the rest of us. Thanks PremedIowa.

Thanks man. That does help put it back in to perspective somewhat. I think this would be a lot easier take if I was fortunate enough to already be accepted to another medical school. Those of you already holding acceptances are very lucky.

It would seriously be nice to know if we had no chance, but I think from their viewpoint it would create a lot of stress for those ranked 4 or 5 who don't get in. I really would like to know my ranking though.

does anyone know when calls are going out again after this Thursday's committee meeting? if my application is reviewed in the next meeting, will I have to wait two weeks to hear from Mayo?

i hope not!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I am so happy for everyone who got in! And nerdy shorty I just read your barnacle anatomy joke on your MDApps profile and I about died LOL!!

I was at the hospital visiting my little girl and so I had my phone off, and I came home and checked my email and voice messages, but got nothing from either. Ought I email Marcy or something? I am assuming hold status until further notice, but did anyone else hear absolutely nothing?

Thanks!

Yeah I agree. It would almost be easier if they did in fact reject people now who they knew would just not have a chance, for whatever reason. Then if you were on hold, you legit knew you were going to continue to be seriously considered. Maybe they just love getting letters of interest soooo much that they want to get as many as possible haha. Doubt it...

dang, that seems like a lot of acceptances already handed out (for the relative class size). how often do they meet again? (redundant question i assume, but way too many pages)

the buzz is they will hand out acceptances roughly every two weeks or so. when are you interviewing?

oct. 30th. that means another cycle before i even interview. dam. i wonder how long between the interview and when they decide...

This seems like a very valid point. I mean there has to be at least some people (say those with a ranking of 1) who were not at all what they expected, and thus they know they will not consider them. I do seem to remember something about how the ranking was not 100% definite (maybe I made this up), so that a person ranked 5 would not definitely be chosen before some one ranked as a 4. If I recall correctly, this had to do with Mayo wanting a very unique student body, and so they would look to accept some one who has something new to add to the class that was not already present in their current group of students. If that unique person was a 3 or a 4, then they would be taken before a person ranked 5. If this is in fact true, then this is why they do not release rankings. Imagine if you were ranked 5, and some one came on here ranked 3 or 4 and had been accepted before you. That would create a lot of chaos. Does any one else recall hearing something like this, or am I just completely crazy?

Not to be a downer, but I am pretty sure the adcom meetings are on Thursdays, which means the earliest they would meet to review you would be a couple days after two weeks from today. I wouldn't let that be a downer though, because there will still be a lot spots still available. Enjoy your interview day, it will be awesome!

This is how I recall the process being described to me as well. Here's to hoping 🙂

I recall something along those lines. They didn't go into detail, but they mentioned that the group of 3 deans who make that final decision on who to accept do make those decisions based on factors beyond the ranking, and they seemed to imply that someone with a somewhat lower ranking could still be accepted for diversity reasons.

And I totally agree that there are interviewees who they already know will not be accepted. Why they wait until January to cut those people loose is something I don't understand, but they must have their reasons. Maybe they don't know how stressful this is for us?? That seems hard to believe...

How long after they receive letters of refs do they usually invite people for interviews? I didn't realize they only interview until December.

I feel like this may be another somewhat downer post from me, but as of right now it seems like no one knows how long to expect to wait to hear back on interviews. To further complicate things some one recently said interviews are full up through December fourth. I think if you received the letter of recommendation confirmation that is a good sign. That means that they are caught up enough to start reviewing your application, so hopefully you will know within about a week maybe. Keep in mind this is a total guess on my part, but like I said, I think it is a very good sign that they have confirmed receipt of your LORs. Good luck, I hope you hear back very soon!

Thanks, i hope its a good sign too. I think i'm probably toast though. I REALLY wished i applied earlier.

Thanks! My wife and I are at my in-laws right now in South Carolina. They are goint to be taking us out for steak tonight. 😀

(I couldn't afford it with both of us going through this whole mess...)

😳

Maybe I'll just get a second job soon...

Guys, I know it's hard not to try to dissect everything, and you want to know exactly how this process works so you can better assess your chances and decrease your anxiety, but you're just going to have to accept that the admissions process is really just a black box from the applicant's standpoint. No school is going to start handing out rankings to applicants before they've even finished interviewing everyone.

While I'm just throwing out my own hypothesis, I would think that since Mayo selects such a small group of interviewees, most are probably ranked 3-5, with the majority probably between 4-5 (with breakdowns like 4.5, 4.9, etc.). I would think a 1 or 2 would be very very rare, but again, that's just my guess. And until EVERYONE has been ranked, they can't possibly start rejecting people with such a small group of interviewees. And given that it is not a strictly numbers based decision (and who would want it to be?), other variables like class diversity (again, that could mean ANY type of diversity) will come into play. So, would you really prefer that they reject you prematurely right now before they get a feel for the body of applicants? Personally, I'd want to stay in the running for as long as they are willing to continue to review me. And I guess that's what I did - getting in last off the alternate list on June 10th my year. Was it stressful? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.

And I think they definitely know how stressful this process is, and I'm guessing that's one of the reasons for compressing the application/interview time line this year.

Thanks Phoenix. I am kind of through with dissecting this process, because it gets me no where. Like I said yesterday, if I had another acceptance somewhere I would be less freaked out right now, but I think it is worth my stress for Mayo to keep considering me. Frankly I think I have a fairly diverse background, so maybe they will decide they need a weird nerdy person like me at some point. If they don't want me, that's ok as long as I get in somewhere, and at least this year Mayo won't keep us waiting as long.

For those of you like me who got put on hold yesterday, at least we can take pride in knowing that it is only October and we have already exceeded the number of posts in last year's Mayo thread! So...go us! 😛

a couple (probably already answered) questions:

1) how many ppl interview per day?
2) every two weeks when they review interviewees, do they interview EVERYONE up to that date? for example, if I interview on 11/9 (purely hypothetical, not my real interview date) and the next committee meeting is 11/13, would I get reviewed? and if I were to be accepted at that point, I could be notified around then?? that would be oh so awesome

Thank you for your response, Phoenix. You're absolutely right, it would not be reasonable to expect them to make rejections when they don't know what their interviewee pool looks like yet. And since they only interview like 6-7% of applicants, I guess they must really like the ones they interview, so unless you bombed the interview, you still probably have a chance at an acceptance somewhere down the line. I happen to think that my interviews went quite well, so I'm just going to treat this whole "hold" thing as an extended opportunity to demonstrate my interest in the school. Thanks for helping put a more positive spin on all of this. It's easy to get negative in the "information vacuum" that we are in, so to speak.

Hey- so what do you do to demonstrate your interest in the schools? Would it help us if we call/email them to let them know how much we want to go there? or do you think that would bug them?

LAman - I don't remember how many interview each day, but if you scroll back through the thread I believe someone did indicate how many. It could also be in one of the interview reviews. As for when interviewees get reviewed, I think they tend to go in order, so it would probably depend on if they're on track or backed up. When I interviewed a few years back Marcy told us at the end of the interview around when we might be expected to be reviewed. It could be two weeks after your interview, or six weeks. Really just depends. In addition, when they do get to your interview date, in order to be reviewed, both of your interviewers must be present. So, it would be possible for other people you interviewed with to get the email letting them know they'd been reviewed, while you'd still be waiting. Finally, acceptances aren't necessarily decided on days the adcom meets, since the decisions aren't made by the adcom. So, if acceptances happened to go out a few days before you were reviewed and ranked, you'd have to wait for the next acceptance group date (which is definitely not set). Marcy has indicated that acceptances may go out every two weeks, but that's not fixed in stone, so I wouldn't rely too heavily on that.

Glad I could help, Lrkoehle and AyCaramba. I know first hand what a rough process it is and how easy it is to get caught up in the frenzied anxiety, especially on this site. And moreover when you don't have an acceptance in hand yet, or you just KNOW a certain school is your perfect match.

Hey- so what do you do to demonstrate your interest in the schools? Would it help us if we call/email them to let them know how much we want to go there? or do you think that would bug them?

You could always write a letter of interest or letter of intent if that's how you feel. And there's lots on LOIs on SDN....

a couple (probably already answered) questions:

1) how many ppl interview per day?
2) every two weeks when they review interviewees, do they interview EVERYONE up to that date? for example, if I interview on 11/9 (purely hypothetical, not my real interview date) and the next committee meeting is 11/13, would I get reviewed? and if I were to be accepted at that point, I could be notified around then?? that would be oh so awesome

1)I think about 10 people interview per day.

2) As I understand it, assuming both your interviewers are present, at the first adcom meeting after you interview, you will be ranked. Now I think after that ranking there is a separate meeting with a couple of the deans who then hand pick students from the pool of ranked applicants. The pool of ranked applicants consists of people who have been put on hold as well as people who have just been ranked. That basically means that everyone who has been ranked is considered equally regardless of the when they interviewed, thus interviewing earlier means more times being reviewed. Keep in mind that this is just as best as I understand it based on what I remember from my interview day, what I have read here, and what I read from last year's thread.

I hope that helps and is accurate (if not some one please correct me).

is there a committee meeting tomorrow?

I think they meet every other Thursday, so there is a 50-50 chance that they will meet tomorrow. I'm pretty sure that doesn't answer your question, sorry.

I just had to quote the bolded part of your post because I think it really has to be emphasized as much as possible. I do have to admit though, that as stressful as this site is at times, it has been a great resource and place to come chat with people going through the same horrible process. I really do appreciate everyone who deals with me in my most neurotic, freaked out moments.
