That sounds like the best time to go!!! People will have time to talk to you.

One of the best things about my interview day (I can't speak for everyone) was that the students, though busy when we were around, took the time to interact with us, even during their class time (as much as was possible while still being professional 👍).

The students were most impressive as EVERYONE was REALLY happy to meet with us and went out of their way to share their love for the school. I can't wait to meet my future classmates at this point. Four years of that type of family atmosphere promises to be amazing.

One quick question for anyone that might know: is there going to be a re-visit weekend, or is there an opportunity to come by just to spend a day "shadowing" officially or otherwise?

My wife is awaiting an interview decision (they just got her LORs two days ago) and if she does NOT get in, I would still love for her to witness the school for herself. Either way, there's always next year...

🙂

Based on last year's thread, there was not an official second look weekend. I have no clue about one this year (which makes sense considering they don't seem to want to accept me anyways).

Wait, your wife is applying to medical school too? How did I miss that (maybe you didn't say anything about it)? That would be nuts if you both got into Mayo, but if she is as much of a bad a** as you then she shouldn't have any trouble. Would you guys go to different schools if she doesn't though?

Hey.. if you don't have a chance I don't, try not to be so down on yourself. So, turn that frown upside down (heh.. sorry, I'm only practiced at giving my son pep talks and that's one I use on him to make him laugh).

Mayo is the first or second most selective medical school in the country and they accepted 10 people on the first round. If you ask me getting into Mayo at all is crazy and getting in on the first round is unbelievable! (Go Bamtuba et al. 🙂) It's not over yet, worry later..

+1. I am in the same boat. No need to give up on Mayo yet! There are 50 more positions to be offered.

Hey hey, anyone else interviewing on Friday? I am so excited to visit this place! I'll actually be staying an extra night to acquaint my jaded New England self with the milieu of Minnesota!

I think you have a chance for sure! I love "turn that frown upside down," its one of the best sayings. Problem is the blood always rushes to my head when I do it, so I had to stop. 😛

I'm not giving up yet at all, but I definitely think I have become significantly more realistic about the chances of actually getting an acceptance here. I'll admit that I have stopped thinking about Mayo as much as I did before the hold status. Of course I would still love an acceptance here and would be here without a doubt if I got it, but I now am more concerned with just hopefully getting into a medical school period.

Are they really going to offer 50 more positions BEFORE they create the alternate list? That would be awesome considering they only plan on interviewing 250 people. Has anybody heard the actual number of people Mayo plans on outright accepting this year? I think last year they over booked by like 8-10 MD only applicants.

Do they put a lot of weight on LOIntents/letters of interest for post-interview people?

I woke up this morning and suddenly had this epiphany. Mayo is now my #1 choice.

Welcome to the club...😀

As for LOI's, I don't think they hurt your chances, but it is very difficult to assess how much they really help. If you truly mean it, go ahead and write one, but I would recommend keeping it to a page or less.

Did any of the four SDNers who were accepted in the first round write a LOI? Bamtuba et al.?

anyone know when the next batch of calls will be going out????

Didn't write a LOI, but did send in an update letter for summer.

They said roughly every two weeks. I think they meet every other Thursday and then call people either Friday or Monday when they get the chance. I guess this last time they just were super busy and calls did not go out until a Tuesday. Based on this, I would guess the next batch of calls will go out either this Friday Oct. 30th or Monday Nov. 2nd. However, this is just my guess, so don't let it drive you crazy this weekend. I doubt anyone knows for sure when the next batch of calls will actually go out. I know it sucks, but we just have to be patient and let stuff happens when it happens. It is just too easy for us to drive ourselves crazy if we don't.

Yes, my wife is also applying. We have discussed our options AT LENGTH (for the past three years...) and will cross that bridge when we get to it. You just never know what's going to happen.

The amazingness of my situation is not lost on me. 😉 Thanks...I expect to see some of you next year (and three more after that). 😎

And everybody: don't give up. Just keep on doing what you can to stay sane and ride the waves. 🙂

I did not write a LOI. I did send thank you e-mails combined with a research update, but I honestly doubt this really affected their opinion of me. I think it likely just reinforced what they already thought, whatever that was.

Thanks for the info. everybody. I look forward to seeing Mayo again in the snow...

Same. I'll be psyched for my first acceptance no matter what school it comes from.

One quick question for anyone that might know: is there going to be a re-visit weekend, or is there an opportunity to come by just to spend a day "shadowing" officially or otherwise?

No one answered this, right? Anyway I asked about a second look when I was at my interview and they told me they don't do this. My wife is sad.

I was told that even though there isn't an official one, a lot of the acceptees get together and create an unofficial one. I'm wondering if we could plan something and then ask Marcy to email out those who are holding acceptances...

Do not despair if you get the hold message!! I was put on hold on 10/20 and Marcy just called me with my acceptance😀😀😀

Does anyone know how many acceptances they offer for their MD-only spots?

dayuummm!!! congrats, dude. looks like mayo has snubbed me again 🙁
whatevs... que sera, sera 🙂

Impatiently waiting for my inevitable hold email. It's almost 6pm. That is what they send out, yeah?

no email. but no phone call either. i should probably put this to rest for the evening.

I sure am glad I was in class when the calls went out, so I didn't have to live through the hell of hoping for a call again. I also am glad this thread is called "Mayo Medical School APPLICATION thread," because I doubt I will ever be able to post in the "Mayo Medical School Accepted Thread." I'm keeping my hopes up, but after two rounds without me getting a call I am being realistic. After my recent interview at my state school, I don't think it would be bad to go there anyways.

Congrats to those of you who got the call this time around! I cannot believe they did another round of acceptances in LESS than two weeks (actually in a week and a day). I figured if anything "roughly two weeks" meant more like 2-3 weeks.

Does anyone happen to know how many people have been accepted thus far (including how many were taken off the hold list) and how many total they plan on accepting this year before the alternate list?

You will be a brilliant, caring physician regardless of what medical school you attend, right? 🙂 I know I will be. I won't accept any other outcome.

👍 Exactly. I have really come to grips with this of late, and so now I am definitely more the kind of applicant who just wants to be accepted to any medical school instead of one or two medical schools. The most important part of becoming a good physician is us. No medical school will make you a good doctor, unless you truly want to be a good doctor. It doesn't matter where I go to medical school, because I am going to work my butt off whether it is at Mayo or my state school. As you said, I won't accept any other outcome. So would I be a better doctor if I went to Mayo? I don't know that I would be (though I might not have some of the opportunities Mayo's financial assistance give its students). All that said, I would still love to go to Mayo and it is still my top choice.

Great post Irkoehle! Keep your chin up! =)

Exactly.

With all the tuba-playing power vested in me, by the Eastman School of Music, I proclaim "it ain't over 'till the fat lady sings."

And I don't hear any Valkyries coming yet. 👍

Thanks truebelief and bamtuba. I am definitely in a lot more positive of a mood right now than I was around this time last week, and how could I not be? My wife and I got our Halloween costumes today! She is going as a punk rocker (leather jacket with studs, super big mohawk and spikes, etc.) and I am going as a very very very obese person (my first time supporting walmart in quite some time and it was buying 4XL sweat pants and shirt). Anyone else got any cool Halloween costumes planned for this year?

So, I got the acceptance call from Mayo the day before my philosophy midterm. Let me explain - this class is supposed to be one of the easiest at my university. Due to post-acceptance activities, I didn't get a chance to study. I got the exam back today, and the grade was an 80. I am so proud. I think my mother will hang this one on the fridge, for real.

Good luck to everybody who is waiting to hear back - I'm pretty sure I'll be coming to Mayo next year, and I look forward to meeting some awesome people 🙂

👍

Good luck with the rest of those classes... 😉

Hey friends, I got the acceptance call yesterday in a sub shop in San Francisco. I was waiting for my friend, and kind of screamed a little, and everyone started gawking at me. Best meal ever. Very excited and would definitely be into some sort of informal second look when it is snowy. Congrats to everyone and luck to those still waiting. 🙂

Just interviewed today. Great to see the hype is real. def a top choice. I hope the turn around time is soon.

For anyone wondering, they told us they sent out 15 of about 70/75 acceptances (IIRC, was pretty busy daydreaming about getting accepted). all those people must be on sdn. Lol.

edit: Tons of spelling typos. Dam iPhone.

good stuff, mah dude. you go to the t-wolves game?
yo, so when you say 15 out of the 70/75 acceptances do you mean that they accept 70-75 kids before even counting the kids who come off the waitlist? meaning, 70-75 acceptances will go out by Jan and then the waitlist will be formed and then maybe an additional 10-20 kids might get off the waitlist as those initial 70-75 people start withdrawing their app and accepting other offers?

Been there. I have to say, I don't know about everyone else who has been to the interview day, but this was one of only two interviews where I actually wanted them to stop telling us how great they are because I was sold at hello. I just thought at the time, "well this will really suck when I don't get in..."

I stayed at the Kahler the night of after the interview and just wandered around the area on a cool summer night just falling in love with the buildings, surroundings, and quiet. Very cool experience. Now I just have to see it in February...

No matter where everyone ends up, we'll all get where we want to be (hopefully), but after visiting here I just couldn't have seen myself happy with a "traditional" curriculum being led by people who just wanted my $$$ and really didn't think I was a great candidate to begin with because I wasn't "like them" anyway. But I guess we all just do what we can and work with what we get.

:luck:

i think you guys are blowing this way out of proportion. TONS of other medical schools care about their students. they arent just about the $.
