i think you guys are blowing this way out of proportion. TONS of other medical schools care about their students. they arent just about the $.
Not what I meant at all.
What I did mean was that they go out of their way to put their money where their mouth is (not that others wouldn't do the same given similar resources), but that they even start out with CHEAP tuition (compared to some places that don't really have to charge as much as they do).
As far as caring about students, I can only speak to the way I was treated at every stage of the process by people associated with the school. This is my personal opinion, and to be fair, I'm not just opining Mayo here. There was one other place that I got a similar vibe. Two out of twelve...
I asked every interviewer the question, "of what are you most proud" with regard to their school and/or associated hospital/clinic. The answer was always obvious before they spoke their first word, and they ALWAYS stated what I would have guessed from the pre-interview spiel. The places that I knew I would not fit well with said things like "our faculty" and "our curriculum" with no more detail added then that. The places that I felt most comfortable with said things like "our students" and "that everyone puts patients first, even the janitors" followed by examples.
There are places that people visit because of "rank" and "prestige," at least to check out for an interview, and that makes sense. And then there are places that continue to impress once the interview day is done for reasons that you never could have considered without going in person. That is what I mean. Mayo (and one other school) impressed me.
But we all have our opinions, and I don't see any problem with posting about mine regarding Mayo on the Mayo thread. Its not like I'm going on other school threads just to say "you suck and school X doesn't." Maybe next year someone will be perusing this year's postings and find something that will convince them to give it a shot. If people last year had not shared their insight regarding these very experiences, I never would have applied, and likely never known what the school has to offer. That is the value of SDN, at least for me, and I hope everyone who reads my "I love Mayo" posts will realize that, besides sharing my opinion, I am not knocking other schools for the sake of building myself up, nor am I convinced that no one else out there offers a great medical education.
For me, getting into ANY school is like having the cake. One only needs to get the cake to accomplish the goal of eating it. Getting a chance to go here, for me is like having the icing, with the cake being my favorite flavor, and oh, by the way, would you like some milk? Skim or regular, chocolate or plain? It helps to make eating that overwhelming cake just a little more enjoyable.
