Yeah DoctorDeMan......go do something relaxing and productive during your break....because I know you can't wait until block 4!

At one school there was an odd situation in which a girl from Harvard would always introduce herself as going to school "in Boston" and only admitted to going to Harvard if directly asked.

this happens alllll the time. i dont think i have met someone from harvard who didn't do that.

Haha, OK so I noticed that too about Harvard, almost everytime! I think it's because when they say Harvard, some people automatically go to "oh, you're stuck up" and who wants that?!

I have seen that some Harvard people pause after mentioning the big H. Suggestion: "Hmmm, Harvard? I've heard of Haverford... is that some school in PA?"

But no, I've met a lot of really cool Harvard and Yale people though, just a little joke.

Oh, I'm going to Mayo today! Friend's fiancee is dress shopping in Rochester, and I'm going with him to allay boredom during shopping. Guess where we'll be going while she's out and about?!?!?!

Yeah that was kind of my point. I think some people (not trying to pick on Harvard people only) are so concerned about what others will perceive about their school that they act in such a way that actually draws attention to where they go. And so it's kind of counterproductive. Because honestly, if you're at an interview and you say "I go to school in Boston," people are inevitably going to ask, "Oh, where?" and you'll be obliged to say Harvard anyways. It makes it seem like you think that you're protecting me from hearing the H word because if I did, my socks would blow right off my feet. But at the same time, I don't think they actually think that, but they think that I think that they think hahahaha anyone else still hungover on food (and family members' questions about where you're going to med school)?

wow. no posts in 3 days.

i can officially give mayo love 😍

lol Mayo's next committee meeting is today (according to some SDNer). hmm..does that mean appointments will be going out today or some time this week =o ? Mayo love!!!

The next one is on Thursday! Dec 3

What about the next sub-committee meetings?

I would guess a day or two after the next big adcom meeting, so maybe this Friday or next Monday. Also, I am guessing more acceptances won't go out until next week (~Dec. 7th or 8th). After that, maybe one more round of acceptances before 2010 rolls around.

Hey guys, I intervies mid-October. But I haven't even gotten a rank email. it's been so long that I forgot that I even interviewed there.... should i give them a call to ask even though Marcy told us to hang on? thanks.

fyi, gave the office a call today. no dean's scholarships this year. everyone gets the same amount (half).

i'm not holding my breath, lol.

As long as we have been waiting, that is probably a smart decision. I think I my hopes will rise again when alternate list is created if I am on it. Until then, I am just hoping to hear from ANY medical school. Although I will admit I do enjoy coming on here and trying to predict the actions of Mayo's adcom. 🙄

How many of you are going to withdraw now? I hope a lot...JK 😛

Honestly, I imagine one or two people who would have in past year's been given a full ride here and maybe half tuition elsewhere may now go elsewhere. I don't think it will really affect Mayo's admissions that much though. I guess even they aren't immune to this economy.

I'm assuming the dean's scholarship is full right? Then I dare to predict, that those who make it on to the alternate list are going to have a field day come May. I can almost guarantee, that people who get in here are very competitive at other places that would give then the same half-tuition scholarship or may be a full at a better location. I will still go to Mayo regardless (maybe except for one other school.lol) Let's wait and see.

Well, word on the street is (from a credible source) that this was decided last year and in no way reflects their ability to keep the money flowing. The clinic ain't goin' broke. 😉

Apparently they felt that there was just no fair way to decide who gets the full ride and who gets the half: the deans felt that everyone was worthy of the $$$. Of course if this is the reason, I would personally have just spread it all out evenly and given everyone 3/4, but who knows. I'm just a crazy tuba player with a computer. 🙂

Now given that last year students were surprised at the last minute with an extra few grand I would not be surprised to see more offered later, but maybe I'm just a little too optimistic. Sure would be an interesting way of spreading the wealth to those who aren't just going for the $$$ anyway (not that they aren't already one of the best deals going, especially once the potential need-based aid kicks in).

:luck: all!

Got the hold E-mail not too long ago, so either they were really late in sending them out from last Monday's sub-committee meeting, or they met yesterday and are sending more acceptances out today. I was ranked before and therefore considered at the last sub-committee meeting, so for my sake, I hope for the former. What do you guys think?

Trust me if I say calls did not go out last night. Those are just hold emails that should have been sent out a long time ago (after the appointment calls). Dec 3 is the next ranking meeting. When the subcommittee meets is still up in the air. I got my information from a very reliable source:meanie:

Avoiding the ridiculous challenge of allocating the Dean's scholarships seems like a good idea to me. At the Mayo lunch, the student there mentioned he is paying a very small fraction of tuition (and he had the 1/2 tuition scholarship). Perhaps need-based aid is buoyed by the extra money to go around to everyone? I still think they may be the best deal in med school!

Hold status for me too. Dang.🙁

On hold here too.. :/ this stinks

Don't get too discouraged by being on hold. I know it sucks, but it is not the end of the world. As I understand it, everyone gets re-reviewed by the sub-committee for every round of acceptances, so you are still in decent position.

I really liked Mayo! =/ o well, I'll just be cautiously optimistic of getting off the hold list like pharaoh.

CCLCM is free, so this may edge out Mayo in cost, but the fifth year is a requirement as well, so pros and cons I guess. I know U Chicago gives out a lot of money as well, but bang for buck, Mayo has got to be in the top 5 I would suspect. I think U Chicago's scholarships are some of the largest, but so is there tuition, so it all comes out in the wash... (I think I mixed metaphors there.)

By average indebtedness, the only peer schools that are better are Stanford and Baylor.

CCLCM is free, but requires five years. Same is true of the PSTP program at Pitt, which I think takes like 5-10 people annually. Isn't there also a school in Florida that is free? I'm not sure. Then there is always the MSTP programs where you get paid to go to medical school (and do 4-6 years of research). All in all though, I would have to agree that Mayo is the best bang for your buck.

Cautiously optimistic is the best way to go. I think more and more people will get in off of the hold list as we get closer to the end of Mayo's cycle. You also can't forget about the alternate list too!

so they do have need-based aid? in the form of scholarships/grants or loans?

Today Mayo sent me an email informing me that I've been put on hold. I interviewed mid-October and was ranked 11/12.

Maybe I'll send them an update letter.

I spoke with their financial aid guru who stated that they do indeed offer need-based scholarship/grant-type money.

The caveat is that his budget from which to offer that money changes year to year, but the plus (or minus, depending on your situation: I have been independent since early HS) is that parental income is NOT considered, and the student income from past work-related income is NOT considered as well. They figure that no matter what your tax return says YOU made last year, you won't have that same income as a student, which makes sense.

As far as how much you get, depends on who is in your immediate "coming to Mayo with you family," if you have a spouse bringing in the "big bucks," and how much other aid you are getting from the school.

I was told that a student in my situation last year, with a working wife, would have received about $6,000 more from need-based.

HOWEVER, he won't know how much $$$ he has to work with until later in the year.

Oh, and the avg. amount given for need-based, according to him, last year was between $1,000-7,000. This does not include loans.

Hope this helps?!

:luck:

A little heart-broken, I can't deny. I'm gonna keep hope alive. Mayo is an amazing place, but I'm trying to remember that its not the only place. It's so easy to become infatuated with a place like Mayo, especially when you're waiting so long hoping to get in.

Anxiously awaiting mine as well.

Bamtuba: thanks for the great detective work! It seems that according to that formula though, everyone who is single gets the exact same financial aid, identically, if spouse income is the ONLY extra factor. Very interesting, but I like it.

Well, I'm guessing that other differences include having a family or already having other scholarship money, etc.

Don't know if I like it or not as I think it fails to account for those that are coming from big $$$ backgrounds vs. those that are not. It is called NEED based aid after all.

I was told by the financial aid rep. that I was in a better position coming from a job than someone coming from undergrad, but paying all of your income to the student loans and college debt is, IMO, not a better place to be coming from compared to the kid who had their parent covering the tab, paying all of their bills, and being given whatever they need while in school. Two extremes I guess, but everyone has their own obstacles to overcome in the end.

But I'm guessing once the smoke clears we'll all have what we need to get through four more years of school.

I am. I interviewed about a month ago, so praying I get ranked...

I'm also waiting to be ranked, interviewed on 10/30. Would the email come tonight? I'm very anxious and eager for the process to move forward...

For those on the Eastern board, I heard it comes around 9:30 pm. :xf: Please let us know if you get ranked tonight.....so we can put everything into perspective. Thanks

For those of you waiting to be ranked, I can tell you that I received my ranked email notice at about 5:30 central, so keep an eye out.

Actually, I'm going to go double check what time I was ranked...

OK, it was 7:30 AZ time, which since we don't have day light savings time (cuz its lame) was a two hour time difference back in September I believe. That means it was 5:30 central time. I hope you all get news of being ranked in two short hours.

Ah crap! Ignore this entire post. My brain is apparently starting to shut down as finals approach. For some reason I treated central time as if it was behind AZ time! I feel like an idiot. Well, I guess the the ranked emails will come out at more like 7:30-8:30 pm central time.

Good luck to those waiting. Hopefully you all get ranked here shortly.
