I interviewed that day too but I haven't received the ranked e-mail.

Are they still having problems with their e-mail system?

Howdy everyone,

I'm a second year med student at Mayo. (This is Gil for anyone that had a tour/lunch with me.) I know very little about the logistics of acceptances and waitlists and holds and all that at this point, but I do know a lot about going to Mayo since I've been here for a little while now. I'd be happy to answer any questions you guys might have. I haven't read this entire thread (51 pages...wow!...it was only 20 or so when I applied...lol...) but like I said, any questions about attending here or living here are totally welcome!! It might take the mind off the waiting process a bit... 🙂 Good luck everyone!

Gil

Do you mind posting or PMing me the correct phone # to call?? Thanks.

Sure. The number I called (more than once lol) is 507-284-2316. Carmen always answered if not just ask for her. I also once got an email from Carmen about a question I had and her signature lists this number 507-538-3798. Can you please let me know what she said regarding hold notices? I don't want to call again if you know what I mean 🙂

Good luck!

Hmmm...I wrote a strong letter of intent after I was put on hold but before the last round of acceptances. I will probably call them on Tuesday to make sure it's been received (in case more acceptances get called on Monday - wouldn't want to bother them then!)

Not all those writing the letters get accepted obviously, but I'm pretty sure it can't hurt to let your top choice know how bad you want to go there and how goodof an addition you will be to the school. also You don't know whether it actually saved you from being rejected outright.🙄 It may very well be that this one letter sets you apart from some of the other candidates the school's thinking of accepting.

Best wishes:luck:

I know that first hand...

Someone asked me a bunch of questions over PM and I thought it might be helpful to share these with y'all. I hope the admission cycle is going well for everyone and that you are looking forward to your medical education!

1) During my interview, the Dean told us that the exam are set in a
board-style format. How true is that? Are all the quizzes and final
exams in the same format? I know the grading system is P/F but what does
it take to pass? How well do you guys do on the boards and also, how does the school help you prepare for the
boards?

2) In terms of shadowing, how do you get access to the consultants? I
know most physicians don't have too much time for email so how easy is
it to get them? Set up an appointment? I think the same question holds
for research opportunities too.

3) About research specifically. I know Mayo, like a few schools give you sometime to do research. Since I the summer break b/n 1st and 2nd yr is quite short, I wanted to use that time to travel abroad and do some type of internation health work in Ghana. I will then use the research block to do an actual wet bench or clinical research project hopefully with an abstract/publication and conference presentation. Also since Mayo is a specialty hospitl, is it easy to have clinicians who will allow me to write case reports for publication et al?

4) About life in Rochester. Doesn't the clinic close down on weekends and closes at 6pm on week days? isn't that atypical since many renowned hospital are kind of open 24/7. I heard Rochester becomes a dead town during the weekends. What do you guys do on a typical weekend?

1. Yes, every single one of our exams are board style and most of them are actual shelf exams. For example, we took the anatomy national exam (and our class averaged 85% on it) and our path final is also the national exam. All the other classes do the same thing as well. The quizzes are all set up in clinical vignettes like the boards as well. I do not know about precise scores, but I asked a few of the second and third years and they said it was one of the top in the country. In order to help us prepare, Mayo has a prep course throughout second year and has a more intense review session in the weeks before the exam.

2. It is ridiculously easy to set up shadowing or research opportunities (the complete opposite of undergrad). Mayo is an academic medical center and the physicians consider educating medical students to be a priority. Thus, nearly all consultants will let you shadow in any specialty. For many of them, this is one of their favorite parts of their jobs and every student in my class has one or more mentors. For example, I have a mentor in internal medicine and another in orthopedic surgery (who is also helping me prepare my Fulbright application). I have also shadowed in radiation oncology, psychiatry, urology, sports medicine, and emergency med. I usually set up a shadowing experience via email or they set up an appt to meet with me if I have questions about the specialty or want to do research with them.

In general, research projects (especially in clinical research) just fall into our laps. There is so much research going on here and so few medical students that residents and faculty advertise to get medical students involved in their projects. Getting an email with the phrase "guaranteed publications" is a regular occurrence. That is how I got involved in a dermatology project I am currently working on.

3. Oops, already answered this question. Yep, the summers are a good time to do work abroad and you can do research during the third year or use some selective or free time to do some work if you wish.

4. When they said the clinic is closed on the weekends, they mean the elective office visits and such, not the actual hospitals. People would be dropping dead left and right if we closed Saint Mary's or Methodist 😛 Rochester actually has a decent amount happening on the weekends. It's not as exciting as a good college town or a big city, but there is some to do. I am heading out to a med school party in a little bit, actually. If you need a bigger city experience, I head up to Minneapolis maybe one in four weekends to do some clubbing or bar hopping and many of my classmates do the same. In general, we party, go to the bars and clubs in Rochester, go out for dinner, hang out at people's places, go to movies, that sort of thing. Pretty much the same list of stuff that happens in most places.

For the most part, people here are happy. That means more than you might think.

PremedIowa, thank you for that great post.

Thanks for the post premediowa!

Everything about Mayo seems great: the hospital, the students, the selectives, the financial aid, etc.

To share one of my concerns though, I am bit worried about the number of people my age (early 20s) on the campus: i.e not many. It seems that with most medical schools having much larger classes, and many schools attached to the main university campuses, Mayo stands out as not having anything at all like that. Even Rochester itself doesn't really have any other schools. I was wondering if any students here could comment on what that is like, since it does seem to be substantially different than most other medical schools in this respect.

Also, besides going to Minneapolis (which I would actually love. Great city), what do students do on the weekends in Rochester?

Thanks!

it didnt sound like students went to minneapolis very often. 1.5 hrs each way is a lot.

This is probably true. My parents live in Minneapolis, so this is more viable for me since I have a free place to stay. I really am more concerned with Rochester itself, since I agree that 1.5 hours each way is a long way to go just to find something to do.

On the other hand, the Twins are opening a new stadium, and I'd love to go to games as often as possible!

it really depends on what you want. from the students perspective, it seemed like going to mayo was somewhat of a sacrifice. they loved the school, but the town was boring (small, cold, everything closes early and on weekends, and yea i think the median age is around 50)

Median age is 50? Wow! For those who are single, it's going to be hell

lol its just a guess. i dont know what it actually is, but it seemed like an old-folks town. no reason for anyone in their 20's to live there unless you're going to school

35 is pretty far from 50. Those demographics are virtually identical to any moderate to large city save retirement communities and college towns. Just at Mayo alone there are a ton of people in their 20s and low 30s. Fresh hires, medical students, PhD students, DPT students, residents, and all the other health programs. You just need to go outside of your medical school class to meet singles - not at all a big problem.

Rochester sounds bad...I recommend those with acceptances go ahead an withdraw IMMEDIATELY! I am being 200% serious, please withdraw ASAP...

WOAH. Average Body Mass Index: 27?!?

WOAH. Average Body Mass Index: 27?!?

Isn't that like right in the middle of the "overweight" spectrum, between normal and obese? Sadly, this seems pretty average for anywhere in America.

I. cannot. wait.

I better be hearing by tomorrow or some sh** is goin' down. When I called that is what they said, but then someone else noted Carmen said calls later this week. Grrr...

Sorry for the angry post. I am tired of waiting and need to figure my life out - either way. Part of me hopes for an acceptance or rejection and nothing in between so I can move away🙁 or become fully engaged 😛 with my love affair with Mayo.

I hope to see this post to its MAX activity tomorrow. Maybe if we all join forces we could annoy the hell of of them to tell us. 😉

I could not agree more! Geez louise, waiting for a call from Mayo is giving me ulcers!

Especially because we don't really know when the calls are coming out (i.e. Monday, or throughout the week). Unfortunately, since it seems like they are giving out quite a few acceptances to A LOT of people on hold, it would make more sense that it would be later in the week.

BWAHHHHH good to know I am not alone.

🙂

I will be keepin' busy all week to make it faster, but you are probably right about the whole thing about through out the week. Now I won't get my hopes up to hear from them tomorrow and then maybe Ill know even FASTER.

Wow I am like a kid keeping busy to stop thinking about how many days till X-mas.....😀

My call came at 7 AM PST, so maybe you'll get waken up to Carmen's (I had Marcy) voice. I thought it was my alarm going off, and so when I finally opened my eyes and saw the area code, I was in complete shock. Good luck! :luck:

Just hang in there guys. I know how stressful it is waiting to see if you will be accepted, put on hold, etc. Maybe it will be helpful for you guys to think of it this way, there are approximately 17 spots for the remaining 212 people who were not accepted yet (250-38), which is about 8% of us...That's a pretty good number I think. Just try to not let it dominate your life this week. I remember the week before Mayo's first round of acceptances making me practically lose my mind.

I remember that too. 🙁
Man, I was nuts back then.
So what are you thinking Irk, is tomorrow finally going to be our lucky day? 🙂

Tomorrow, we both get in! 😀 Actually, I hate to say it, but I don't see acceptances going out tomorrow. I know there are a lot of people on here hoping to get the call tomorrow, but I just feel like it will be later in the week. I don't have any reason for believing that, but it just seems like that is the way this whole process goes. Oh well, I have learned to be more patient throughout this cycle. Also, I really have come to believe that if it is meant to be, it will happen. If not, that's ok too, because I am going to do my absolute best at whatever medical school I go to and achieve my ultimate dream. That is all that matters in the end. Of course I am still holding out hope that I will also achieve my smaller dream of getting accepted to Mayo...

I guess we'll all pretty much know our fates at Mayo by Friday this week.

:luck::luck::luck::luck:

Please send those calls Mayo..... We all love you, but also want to hear from you......😕

Why don't you guys call and see if calls are going out later today or whenever? That would ease the nerves of everyone. I'd love to call but it wouldn't make sense since I'm not waiting anymore.

I actually tried to call and let them know I changed my phone number but it's going straight to Marcy's voicemail. Is there a different number to call other than (507) 284-2316? I'll kill two birds with one stone and ask about calls today if I can get the right number...

Here is Carmen's direct number....try this:
507-284-3798

try (507) 284-2316

oops..I guess that's the same number

I called that number, and it went straight to Marcy's voice mail. Maybe that means Carmen is not at the desk? It is right around lunch time, so maybe I will call back in an hour.

This number got me Gastroenterology or something like that...😕

Haven't tried yet but someone mentioned 507-538-3798

I called the main school number (507-538-4897), and I reached Carmen. I have some bad news though. She told me the committee meets again on the 21st, and the last batch of acceptances will be going out before the end of the month. This makes a lot more sense, considering how many have not received a ranking email yet. It looks like they are still trying to play catch up.

Also, the alternate list will come out in February.

Good luck with the waiting! :luck::luck::luck:

OMG the 21st?! I am a November kid who has not been ranked yet.

That's rough. Were you late November? I think you are a victim of the holidays and Mayo being a little behind schedule. Sorry. I'm guessing one of your interviewers wasn't available for the first possible ranking meeting for you (probably Jan 7th), and the other dates before that were dealing with the logjam of other applicants or fell in the middle of the holiday season. Since the adcom meets every 2 weeks, that puts you right at January 21st. The 21st will be here before you know it!

I was mid-November...

I guess I can stomach 2 more weeks...maybe...

Well, I'm not sure if this is an option for you, but maybe you could just get some sleeping pills and sleep until January 21st???? That way you wake up, and BOOM you've been ranked! **please note, I do not condone the abuse of sleeping pills or any other drugs. This statement is intend to be taken as sarcasm. Please consult a medical doctor before taking any drugs to aid with sleeping for 10 days straight. That means in four years you can consult me, because I've been accepted this cycle (woot woot!!!!). However, in four years I am almost certain I will still strongly discourage the use of sleeping pills to help one sleep for ten days.**

Also, to fully understand the woot woot, check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nnzw_i4YmKk Its a classic...

Yea, probably not a great idea...

LOL...dissapointed much?

Wow, when I called last week I was told that calls would go out towards the end of this week. Now they say the commitee doesn't meet till the 21st?? Then again I was also told that I was on the schedule to be ranked the next day (last week Thursday) and I still haven't received a ranking email. Funny how these dates constantly get pushed back. Despite all the good things about the school they really seem to struggle keeping up this year.

I finally decided to call Mayo, as I've been relying solely on word of mouth on this site and have received no ranking or other type of email since my interview in early November. Basically, for November interviewees, there was some error in the Powerpoint system they use to rank applicants and were having trouble loading the files. So what this means is that most (if not all) November interviewees (myself included) still have yet to be ranked. This is good and bad news. Good because I had feared up to this point that the Mayo dream was dying fast. And bad because we're going to have to wait til the end of January for a possible acceptance.

Thanks for the phone number. That worked great.

Some day we'll all look back and laugh at how neurotic we all were about knowing our fates. Not yet though. Yikes this feels like it's never going to end.

I'll second this, I called this morning and heard the same news.

Thanks for calling you guys. The delays are a bit annoying, but remember that this is their first year using this "accelerated" interview schedule; a number of us would not have even been interviewed yet under the old schedule. Anyways, for me, it will just allow my other schools a couple weeks to get back to me with good news so if things don't work out at Mayo I won't be as disappointed ha

Well, don't forget that they were trying out a new accelerated cycle this year, so that is probably the source of the waiting. Last year, the cycle was interviewing starting in September (about the same this year) and ending late February I believe. This year, they cut off about 2 and a half months, so as aycaramba said, many of you would not have even interviewed yet (let alone know your fates. I know how much it sucks to get your hopes up and prepare yourself mentally and emotionally for the big day where you think your fate at Mayo may finally be known, but we just have to be patient. Good luck all! :luck::luck::luck:

I've been out of the mayo loop for a while now. it seems like everyone is excited about call backs this week. how do you guys know that mayo will be making call backs this week? can someone verify this?
