I'm curious about this as well. It doesn't make much sense to me for schools to have monster-sized waitlists, but this is certainly the impression I'm getting from Mayo (as well as others).

Would it be fair to say that a school like Mayo would maintain a list much larger than its overall class size?

See my previous post.

wonder what happened to irk. you guys know you're curious

I didn't disappear or go into hiding. I grade for an O chem lecture, and sure enough they had a test today. Basically, my afternoon was spent proctoring and then grading part of over 300 exams, so I just finally got home.

Anyways, I was not selected, but that ok. I really wasn't interested in Mayo, and I only applied here as a joke in the first place...OK, not really, but whatever. That's how life goes. I actually had a dream a few weeks back about getting rejected, so perhaps that was a sign of things to come (I also had a dream months ago about my interviewer at Mayo telling me I did great and I was a "shoe-in" and then when I went to my interview at Mayo one of my interviewers did say I was "fantastic"). At least I now know I will not be freezing my butt off in Minnesota for the next four years! If any of you crazy people need to warm up next winter, just feel free to come visit me in AZ. 😛

Oh, and not that any one cares, but I do plan on continuing to monitor this thread through the end. I feel like many of us have developed a psuedo-friendship over the course of this shared misery, and so I would love to see all of you make it in off the waitlist.

Congrats to all those selected.

Also not selected. I kind of expected it because I didn't feel so good about my interview... Anyways, I guess this makes my decisions that much easier!

I wish you all the best, lrkoehle (and everyone else, regardless of your status at Mayo). For someone as determined as you, I'm certain you'll go on and do great things, regardless where you end up next fall.

Good luck with everything Irk!

Not selected. Totally bummed. However, I'm an eternal optimist and suppose that this just brings a little more clarity to my situation. At least I can cross Rochester off the list of things to worry about.

Best of luck to you all. Mayo--as we all surely know--is such an amazing place. I hope that we all cross paths one day, be it residency or otherwise.

Cheers and ciao!

lrk, I'm sorry to hear that! I haven't been around since I got rejected post-LOR, but I've been checking back often to see if you had gotten in yet. You'll go on to do great things at AZ. I feel for you. Sorry, man.

Thanks bam-bam. I'll certainly be thinking of you next winter when its in the 60's in Tucson, and I'm trying to decide if I should bother to put shoes on or just wear my sandals again. 🙄 The great thing is that even though its warm in Tucson, just an hour drive up the mountain and I can go snowboarding (I just found that out recently, and I'm super excited)!

It feels great to know that people were interested in how things would turn out for me at Mayo. Thanks, I appreciate it.

Anyways, I wasn't lying about really, really liking my state school, so I am very happy to be going there next year. The nice thing is now that Mayo has let me go, I can finally start making my plans there without wondering, "what if Mayo calls?" Its a great feeling to truly know where I am going to be next year.

Nooooooo, I was continuing to follow this thread to see what a crazy excited accepted post you'd have. 🙁 BUT, I'm so happy that you're happy with where you're going, and that you can get some closure now. Maybe we'll be at Mayo together in another four years!

My accepted thread would have probably crashed this site for days. It definitely would have had the max number of smilies. Some embedded videos. Fireworks. etc. etc.

I really am happy with where I'll be, and it feels great to now know 100% where I will be for the next four years (I bet all of you on the alternate list are now jealous that you weren't rejected too! It'd make your decisions so much easier :meanie:). And four years from now, I will most certainly be applying for residency at Mayo, so the dream isn't totally dead yet.

Don't be too sad for me. Mayo was a dream school of mine forever, so maybe it is better left as a dream. Plus, it is a relief to know exactly where I will be next year, so my wife and I can get everything arranged instead of holding out for Mayo (which I probably would have done if I was on the alternate list).

Sorry to hear the bad news, Irk, I'm in the same boat. At least we're both pretty set now with where we're going; good luck to you, and everyone else (waitlist or otherwise). You'll all do great!

I'm sorry too that you didn't get months more of anxiety and angst per Mayo. But I'm really glad that you're going to a school you're excited about, and I am definitely jealous of the weather in AZ. And there is always residency..... Take care, and good luck in med school! :luck:

For those of you who are on the alternate list, you probably already know, but there are about 100 on the list. Congrats, and welcome to the wait. 😉 Oh, and my year, I believe 21 were accepted off the alternate list. But it does vary year to year.

A message from the admissions office sent to those waitlisted said that 100 waitlist offers had been extended. But a final count of those who asked to be placed on the list would be great!

Just wanted to let you guys know that I was not accepted to Mayo. I appreciated the 3 line rejection email, lol. Good luck to everyone on the waitlist!

In years past I believe that almost everyone decided to hold a spot (i.e., only a couple declined). So I don't think that figure is going to be particularly helpful, but I can certainly ask.

First off, congrats to all of those accepted, and a continued good luck to those who made it to the wait list.

I happened to fall in the "not selected" group. I really loved Mayo, and it was the only school I went to that really made me feel comfortable leaving the northeast. But fortunately, I am not completely heartbroken even though it was my first school I've been straight rejected to post-interview.

Luckily, I have been infatuated with a different school closer to home that I liked a little better than Mayo (my top choice I sent an LOI to). I am waiting out the clock until mid March with my fingers very crossed.

At the end of the day, we'll all probably become excellent doctors.

:luck: Good luck again to those on the wait list. Again, congrats a million times over to those who are already in. This year was super competitive.

I'm kinda sad. 🙁 There hasn't been a post in 4 days..... +pad+ Talk to me people!

If this ends up like last year's thread, there probably wont be many more posts at all until people announce they've been taken off the alternate list. :-\

Hi!

How's the weather?

I took a trip to South Texas to get away from the cold this week. It was about 95 degrees here yesterday, but of course it warmed up in NY too.

I like the warm weather.

It makes me happy.

🙂

So...What how much do you guys think is TOO much when trying to show Mayo how much you love them?

I would probably eat a poop hot dog (referring to a thread on the main allo forum) to go here...

But for real. How many updates/calls/letters of intent are over the line vs. acceptable?

The weather here in MA has been amazing. It's been sunny and in the 50's every day for the past week! I'm slowly coming out of my winter depression. I'm with ya. I love Mr. Sun! He makes me happy! Don't know how I'll cope next year...

Hmmm. I'm not so sure I'd eat a poop hot dog just to go here. I think that would cause more harm than good. From a scientific or health-related standpoint, you would probably suffer from some infection or illness since poop is not sterile (like urine). I'm not sure I would want to risk my health for Mayo, since you need your health to practice medicine.

I have no clue. I have a more laid back approach to the whole med school admissions process, so I never sent updates or letters of intent for schools. I would imagine anything that sounds remotely stalkerish (like calling every single day) would be too much. My rule of thumb would be to put yourself in the shoes of the person in the admissions office and ask yourself if you would feel more annoyed (or harassed) than flattered receiving updates/calls/letters every *insert your frequency here* because someone wants something from you. If the answer is yes, don't do it. If the answer is no, more power to you! (The only exception would be for schools like Brown and Columbia who LOVE getting attention and actually encourage it.)

Haha I was totally kidding about the poop hot dog....I just would give about anything to go here and think that the thread I was referring to is hilarious because there are definitely some crazies out there!

Thanks for the input on the frequency of updates/calls though!

:luck: to all who are still waiting!!

Good luck to anyone matching today!

Oh, and if someone doesn't mind, let us know how it all turned out, sans specific details of course.

Since I know you were all probably wondering (I know I was at this point), Mayo's match list from this year will likely be sent out to you all in the next couple days. It looks just as good as past lists, and it seems nearly all the Mayo students are going exactly where they wanted to go.

That being said, remember a couple things whenever you look at a match list. First, do not assume that everyone wants to do derm/neurosurgery/insert competitive specialty here. At this point in your career, people are choosing want they will do for the rest of their lives and are not merely trying to go into the most difficult thing to get into. For example, this year no Mayo students applied to derm. It's not because they couldn't, it's because they did not wish to. Also, our small class causes the specialty distribution to vary wildly, so funky things can happen from year to year. Ex: More students went into ophthalmology than IM this year. Overall, the fourth years were very pleased with how they did and felt that going to Mayo was a significant asset to their residency applications.

Best of luck, and I look forward to meeting many of you over the coming months!

Thanks for this! I was curious if the information being sent will include about how many of the students got their 1st, 2nd, 3rd choice etc.

I'm sure people are happy with where they're headed either way 😉

Not to sound picky, but this statistic means very little. Due to the fact that you only rank the programs that you interviewed at, almost every medical school will tout the fact that 90-95% of their students match into their top 3 choices. You are not going to be interviewing at top programs if you don't have the board scores, research, etc to go along with that. As much as I hate to say it, the number 1 and number 2 predictors of where you will get into a residency program are STEP 1 score and 3rd year grades. So if you want a real predictor of residency match success, ask for the average STEP 1 score.

I don't mind having these facts brought up, and I agree with you to a great extent, but I think what I was looking for is being misunderstood.

If we could ever even know this information (which I doubt) I would like to know where the candidates 1)wanted to be pre-application, 2)had the opportunity to interview, and 3)matched in relation to the applicant's ranked list after interviewing each program as well.

What one thinks they want before actually interviewing any school/program can vastly change after visiting for many reasons, but I agree that having the opportunity to decide for oneself is of utmost importance.

At the end of the day, I firmly believe that no match list, no matter how great, will be an indicator of future success on an individual level. That being said, I would be impressed by ANY list where the majority of people achieved their 1st choice and even more impressed by a program that boasted both this AND top level STEP scores for the reasons you mentioned above.

But after looking at the Mayo 2010 match list I am sure people are happy with their education in retrospect and would do it over again given their choices in life.

I've heard >90% got their first choice through the grapevine, which is what we were told last year as well. Schools usually try to keep that information out of the public eye because it pressures administrations to pressure candidates to rank places first that they think they will reasonably match rather than shooting as high as they can. The way the match works rewards students for ranking their favorite places highly regardless of what they believe their chances to be. It would really mess up the spirit of the match if there was a public list that medical schools had to pay attention to.

One important thing to glean out of this match list is geographical representation. Even in a small class, we have people going everywhere, from California to Washington to the Midwest to TX to FL to traditional east coast programs like JH and MGH. Mayo is a well-known institution and if students do well here they can get into any area they wish. Do not feel like you are slotting yourselves into staying here (though the residency programs here are superb) by coming to school here. You will get an amazing education and will have options at the end.

Current students, thank you all for the information.

I agree that such a list would be ridiculous for those same reasons, and have been impressed that the class, though as small as it is, goes as far as they do.

Have you ever heard of anyone feeling pressured to "reconsider" their specialty of choice or the programs to which they decide to apply at Mayo?

BTW, I would ask these things through PM, but I have a feeling there are others out there who wouldn't mind getting an answer to these same questions. This might sound weird, but there are times Mayo sounds a little too good to be true, if that makes sense (ie. high STEP 1, great residency placements, cheap tuition, etc.). I almost feel as though there must be some horrible dark room in the sub-basement of the medical school where they keep all the problem children for 24 hour/day, 7 day/week brainwashing, one which I might be sent to if I keep up these questions... 😳

I laughed out loud at that one. We really do have a good life here. The only reason Mayo probably isn't near the top of the USNWR rankings is do to its relative youth (only 30-odd years old), but Mayo as an institution has been around for 150. Our educational mission is well-established and we have a dedicated and long-term faculty. The other possible reason is its location: Rochester is in a northern state and is a relatively small city compared to Chicago/NYC/San Francisco. I love it here and we have the opportunity to travel a lot, though.

No one is told to reconsider their specialty, but the deans here have a lot of experience and share with students their relative chances and where they should be applying. For example, a middling student certainly wouldn't be encouraged to apply to a single, top-ranked plastic surgery program. The administration is supportive and full of mentors that know the residency match in every specialty well.

not gonna lie. i thought a lot of you guys were crazy with your mayo love.

but after seeing the place, it really is amazing. best med school imo. got rejected, but I am happy i got to see it!

For us poor souls still on the alternate list, when does one suppose waitlist movement, if any, will occur around? Closer towards May? Is it silly of me to check my email first thing when I get up in the mornings hoping to hear that a spot has magically opened up for me?

I think they call (not me obviously), so it may be a little crazy to hope for an email. Still, I understand wanting everyday for Mayo to accept you. Thank god I'm not in that boat anymore! 😀

I would think (and I'm just making an educated guess) that people would start hearing around mid or late April and then more so in May as financial aid offers start coming in and decision time draws nearer. But that's just a guess...I can't wait to see who my actual classmates will be! Good luck y'all!!! :luck::xf::luck::xf:

In last year's thread, some alternate list acceptances posted in in May.

For those of you on the alternate list or accepted students who missed out on second look I just want to say that the weekend has been amazing so far!!👍👍

I can say my opinion of Mayo definitely improved over the visit, and I think most of the rest of our group would certainly echo this.

Best of luck to those of you still making your decisions and to those hoping for good news🙂

Agreed.

I was really amazed that a group of people, so different in so many ways, could absolutely gel in the first two hours of hanging out.

:luck: to those waiting (or making difficult choices...)!

It was nice to see a bunch of the future members of the class of 2014. Hope to see you all here!

Note: I've been kinda bored lately, so I finally took the time to read through all 58 pages of this thread (dorky, I know 😳). I have to admit, it's a pretty good read. It was almost like watching a television series and being left in suspense until the next episode (i.e., set of calls or emails went out). Anywho, I figured that I would pick up where Irkoehle left off and edit the status list so that it includes those on the alternate list. If you move off the alternate list or withdraw your acceptance or alternate spot, please edit accordingly. Also, if I missed someone, please let me know or edit the list yourself. Good luck y'all!:xf:

I ended up withdrawing from the alternate list...so tough to do, even with my slim chance of getting off it. But I think it's the best choice for me. Mayo will always have a special place in my heart...it's an incredible school. 🙂 Good luck to those still waiting, and congrats to all accepted...you have such an exciting four years to look forward to!!
