Congrats!! After hearing so much positive feedback about this school from interviewees I would love to get an opportunity to interview there ... holding on to hope 🙂

Who should I be addressing a LoI/update letter to?

i just got an interview invite today (for 1/14/2010) after being complete since mid-july! i am ecstatic about this invite since mount sinai is probably my top choice school. there is hope after all.

I interviewed on 10/26 and I have not heard anything yet....Didn't she say 2nd or 3rd week in November? It seems like all the replies that already went out were for interviews before the 10/26 week

well i interviewed 10/20 and was also told i'd hear the second or third week of november. instead i heard on november 4th. go figure.

Are we supposed to receive an email complete status? I submitted my secondary in mid july?!

uh, call them on Mon or Wed between 2-4 pm.... that's how people have been getting their complete statuses for months now

They don't send emails for completions, call them on mon/wed at 2-4 pm to check on your status.

is there some way to make this required reading material for anyone who wants to post on this thread? it is getting really annoying to read a bunch of these "zomg wherez my complete email?!?" posts every day.

Does anyone know how generous Mount Sinai is with tuition? Do they give full merit based scholarships?

Does anyone know how generous Mount Sinai is with tuition? Do they give full merit based scholarships?

no. on interview day, they explained that there is a base amount of loans that you take out, and if you have demonstrated need above that, they fill it in with scholarship (not more loans). this is assuming you submit parental financial info, of course. if not, that changes things. someone feel free to correct me and/or fill in info that i've forgotten.

The FA guy told us on our day that they do have merit scholarships, just a very limited amount with the recent economic troubles. I think he said last year they were only able to provide 8 scholarships, worth half a year's tuition.

they told us (more or less exact quote): don't come to us with financial aid offers from other schools and expect us to match them. we don't have the money, period.

i guess it's good that their fin aid office is upfront about these things, but this was one of the most demoralizing financial aid sessions i've experienced.

Their tuition is also a little less than comparable schools with state-of-the art facilities across the board so I would tend to trust them when they say they don't have it. We are all going to be in debt up to our eyebrows, that is what becoming an adult in America is all about! I feel more mature already.

Has anyone accepted gone to go get the piss test yet? I was kind of surprised to see this in the acceptance package... and it doesn't seem like there's any timeline to get it done by. Should be an interesting experience.

Haha I just got that yesterday and was surprised too. I think you probably just need to have it in before August, so I was gonna hold off til March when I hear from other schools/attend re-visit day so I'm sure I'm attending. I can't remember if it cost a fee or not?

yeah i'm gonna hold off until i make a final decision... although i'm pretty sure this is where i'm gonna end up.

this is embarrassing, but one of the few qualms i have about mt. sinai is my furniture. they told us on the day of the tour that we can't bring any furniture (mattresses included) into their housing unless it's brand new and in the packaging because they don't want bedbugs. but their beds are twin size!! i thought i was done with that crap when i finished college. i really want to bring my huge bed wherever i go. i might have to get my dad to dress up as a sleepy's delivery guy and bring my mattress wrapped in cellophane. le sigh.

I totally agree! The thought of going back to a dorm room irks me in general (i've been out of college for 1.5 years now and I'm way to used to being able to afford my nice, Philly apartment on even my meager research salary)...but the thought of giving up my big bed is even worse. Suppose you find a significant other....I don't think I could take sharing a single bed again. Haha, tmi. But I guess this is the case for practically all the Manhattan medical schools. Le sigh, NYC, so fun, but so expensive.

le sigh times 3.

when did ppl start using this phrase?

just called the office and they said decisions for post-interview people will take 3-6 weeks instead of the 2-3 weeks i believe they told us earlier. just thought you guys might want an update.

Ya it sucks... Thankfully the Sinai apartments are way less dorm-like than the NYU ones. At least they make an attempt to make it seem like an apartment with a living room, kitchen, etc. I hope I get one of those beauty rooms on the top floors with balcony access. $600 for a room with a balcony overlooking central park ain't bad!

at the other NYC schools i've been to, you can bring your own bed even if it's just a dorm room. mt. sinai fails in that way. alas.

I'm totally with you guys...I really don't want to still be living in dorms when I'm 27 and a 4th year, even if it is "apartment style." Plus I have a queen bed which I LOVE and am going to be very reluctant to part ways with...

I don't know about NYU and Columbia, but I'd like to see someone try to get anything other than a single bed into one of the Cornell rooms...they're TINY

maybe i'm dreaming, but the room i saw on my tour had a full size bed...and my tour guide said it was the one provided. i remember thinking how great it was that they actually thought of you as enough of an adult to provide an adult-size bed. maybe some rooms have full size beds and some twins?

Thanks for the update! So I guess for the 10/26 interview week, they won't be getting back to us by Friday (as I had hoped)?

Yeah I'm kind of confused. I slept in one...it was a FULL not a single or a queen. Not huge but definately would be comfortable for two people (not amazingly roomie but totally fine). Come on guys, $550/month in Manhattan two blocks from Central Park at a top med school. Maybe we are getting a little nit-picky.

Kinda random, but did anyone have a less than positive hosting experience? My host himself wasn't very good, although his roommates were really chill and salvaged it. But I know two other people who had bad experiences too, so I'm a little curious if any of you did.

Yeah, the bed I saw was a full, very decently sized. I was actually pretty amazing by the Sinai apartments, they have a good size and it's cool you can stay in them starting your first year. Granted, I did spend the night in one of the duplex apartments which they also showed us on the tour, so I guess I saw the biggest they can be. Cornell's upperclassmen apartments are nice too, but Sinai's were bigger.

yeah, the mt sinai apts have full beds, but you still can't bring your own bed/furniture...and you're right, in the grand scheme of things its not a big deal. but i've been out of college for two years, and live with my boyfriend in an apartment that I spent quite a bit of money furnishing, so i don't think its too hard to see why i, and others in similar situations, are less than thrilled at the prospect of giving that up to go live in a dorm.

that being said, its definitely not a reason (at least for me) to not attend any of the nyc schools...

You could get married housing and circumvent that situation most likely.

Steeler, the M1s just got thru a few exams, so your host might have not taken them yet and was stressed out. Or he could have been a tool. 🙂 Just saying

Beds are full beds. No twins. You can bring some kitchen/living room furniture, but not, alas, beds. A lot of ppl hide the sinai chairs in the lounge and invest in a good desk chair.

ah, thank you for the info. i can rest easier knowing i can still have a big bed 🙂

(i know this is trivial and silly but i really do care!)

no, you definitely have the right mindset 😉 a good bed is key!

is it still worth submitting secondaries? i was a COMPLETE idiot and totally forgot about it!!!!! i am SO kicking myself right now...

JUST got an invite via phone after anxiously twiddling my thumbs for so long!!! My given date was December 2nd, which doesn't really coincide with the in-the-area e-mail I sent them (I said I'd be in town on the 7th) so I'm not sure if that played any role in things. Regardless, I am beyond thankful right now. I've told other people to not worry about complete/invite dates, but I was having a hard time following my own advice for this school in particular, so it's such a relief to hear back 🙂 Deep breaths now. Whooo. Saaaaah.

Congrats! When were you complete?

I believe I was complete some time around late August, so there's still hope for us summer applications!

For those of you accepted, how long did it take to get you packet in the mail. I'm wondering if I should call and ask for another one since I was accepted about 3 weeks ago.

I got it last week. I'd definitely call because you're supposed to have mailed them the acceptance of offer letter by something like November 26th I think?

just got it 🙂, due Nov 23rd

I'd call. Also, check with your parents, since mine was mailed to my home address. I got mine like Nov 15th (I think) and mailed out the form last Thursday/Friday in the envelope they gave. I'll probably end up calling tomorrow anyway just to make sure they received my form I mailed back. Does anyone know if there is a time frame on the drug test?

Anyone with a post 10/20 interview hear any news? It seems like Sinai sends decisions out in waves. Heres hoping the next wave comes soon.
