No, I only called to ask where to send updates and LOIs

What constitutes a well-written LOI? Is it enough to just update about grades? Could they be irritated/an update hurt your chances?

The focus of an LOI should be:
1. Why you are a great match for their school (giving specific reasons and backing up these reasons with examples from your activities)

i.e. I want to go to X university because it has a great institute for Y research and I did a lot of Y research as an undergrad...

2. That this school is your top choice, so if they extend you an offer, you'll accept. (Schools like to know that people will accept their offers; the greater percent of students who accept, the better their ranking will be.)

A LOI is totally different from an update letter. Keep in mind that an update letter can be sent at any stage of the game, while an LOI is usually sent after interviewing or directly after being waitlisted.

Sorry, so you're saying they recomended just sending emails? Or they said either email or snail mail work?

I've been told (not by NYU, but by others) to send an email that ends with saying, "hard copy to follow," and also send a snail mail.

I just asked "Where should we send update letters and LOIs?" and she just told me the email address would be good and they would get it that way. That was the entire conversation.

I looked through last years thread prior to calling and it said that NYU prefers electronic LOIs and updates. I only called to make sure this was still the case, and seems like it is.

Not that I know much of anything about all this, but I really think that people are thinking too hard about it...you will not be in trouble if you only send an email...they are more interested in the information you send than how you send it, wouldn't you say? This process is stressful enough without worrying about silly things like this. Call them if you are unsure!

I wonder how many interview spots they still have to give out. I am still under review and it would be annoying if they didn't tell me I was rejected once they give out their last interview slot.

I just called the admissions office to inquire - she told me that all of the interview spots had been assigned. i asked her if i could submit anything else because i'd be in the area and she said it didn't matter bcos all of the spots are gone. they will send official letters out in march. anyway, not sure if that is an official position by the school, but i'm scratching them as a no...

yea... they have quite possibly the shortest interview season of all schools i've looked at (sept. to january). DAMN YOU NYU!!!

That is so not cool. Even those without SDN will figure it out come the end of January.

Just make it official and don't be douchebags, NYU. This is the kind of crap I hate about this process. If you're rejected, just do it - plenty of schools aren't afraid to pull the trigger early.

Good luck to everyone else under consideration!

seriously. :lame:

Well that's annoying, I put a lot of work into that secondary.

I'm withdrawing pre-emptively so I don't have to count it as a rejection.

lol that's actually a good idea... more of a psychological thing but still

i agree so hard.

even post-interview decisions should be sent out ASAP. i hate that i'm waiting 'til march for a couple of schools... but odds are i've already been tossed into the reject pile and i just won't know for 2 more months. :lame:

It seems like with NYU, because of their fast time frame, they really only got a chance to look through summer people.

Maybe I'm just trying to convince myself that my Sept 15th complete date is the reason for my rejection and not some other flaw, but it does seem like most invitees were complete in the summer.

I get that feeling too. I submitted my secondary on 9/2 and wasn't complete till the beginning of October. Not sure how founded it is, but I do feel like my application might not have even been looked at. I felt pretty competitive here too. Time will tell though.

1. that's why it's important to apply early-- too all you 2015ers who are lurking here.

2. september 15 is still a decent complete date... erm, i mean... that was the only thing holding you back! 😛

Based on previous posts on this board, they got through completion dates up to early October. Based on my own timeline, this means they got through submission dates up to late August.
I guess all the students at NYU are extremely prompt. No one is ever late to class. Whatever.

I am also withdrawing to preempt the rejection.

Just sent a withdrawal email to preempt the rejection, that was a good idea. It will be less demoralizing that way.

I hope everybody that loves this school gets in by March!

:luck:

too lazy to withdraw...i dont think im gonna actually withdraw from any school. just ride em out...they stressed me out all year. imma stress them out too. 😀

but in all seriousness, are you guys that terrified of rejection?!

No, I have a bunch of rejections - most in a lot worse ways than this one. Of course, they did tell me up front.

If I have the ability to stop one, though - why not?

Rejections hurt! Doesn't always work though... I sent Northwestern a withdrawal a while ago and they responded with a rejection letter a week later.

I'll wait out the others out of curiosity, though. There's really only one school that I'd consider over my single acceptance anyway.

That made me laugh. Just seems like such a "you can't dump ME, I'm dumping YOU!" move!! LOL!

hey at least you APPLIED to northwestern! i didnt even send in their secondary and they sent me a rejection. caught me totally off guard. i was driving home and my phone went off. almost crashed i was so shocked.

only 'cause you asked:

"Admissions Committee,

I hereby withdraw my application from your medical school.

I have learned that you have given out all of your interviews, but didn't deign to update mine and other applicants' pages.

Enjoy spending my application fees.

now i just need to get accepted to a better medical school.... lol

Hah, that sucks. Am I going to get rejections from the schools for which I didn't even bother with the secondary? That would suck. Hope they consider themselves withdrawn from. My ego is far to fragile to be applying to med school.

I called the admissions office today outlining my case for a refund if my application wasnt even considered.... it got testy....i didnt get my money back

When did you submit? did they actually confirm that you application was not even reviewed?

I was actually hoping more people do that so NYU gets the message. Hopefully for future application cycles they'll stop taking applicants for a ride.

After telling the lady I was marked complete in mid november, she admitted that it was most likely not reviewed. she wouldnt specify what "review" meant- it was obviously checked for the mcat, trancripts, essays etc...but said it was most likely submitted too late for serious consideration...take from that what you will peeps. and good luck!

whoa man, they actually said that?

now I am definitely going to call them tomorrow.

i am going to request evidence that they actually performed the service we paid them to perform. if they didn't indeed review the applications submitted before the deadline, that's fraud.

i suggest the rest of you who weren't granted interviews do the same.

This is so un-cool. :nono:
I didn't get the "your file is complete' msg until mid Nov, I guess my file was never even opened.... it's not just about the 100 bucks you know... it's also the emotional roller coasters that we have to go through...:wtf:

Funny, but if that was really your reply, you may have validated their decision if NYU cares about good grammar: "my" is the possessive pronoun to use here...

Wow, that's really crappy if it's true. I mean, why wouldn't they just make the secondary application deadline late august? 🙁

wow- if this is true, i find it completely unethical of them to give a deadline and take money for applications they are not even going to consider. extremely unethical.

if you're going to do that, you have an obligation to say that only so many number of applications will be reviewed each year, and after that, you are sending your application/money at your own risk.

sorry, but that is total BS. i am shocked and disappointed with NYU's shady admissions practices and am feeling quite motivated to send them a letter about it. ridiculous.

wow, that would be pretty awful if they don't even review the files after taking the money. If this is how much repect they show their applicants, wonder how they will treat their med students. I hope this tanks their ranking next year. 👎

Based on previous posts on this board, they got through completion dates up to early October.

Even if they did get to Early October, as the season goes on it seems schools look for something particular to "round out their class". That means that you might have been a good candidate before but by the time they start reviewing late-Sept and early Oct candidates they might be looking for people with a certain background to make a more diverse class.

I totally agree that if a school doesn't even get close to reviewing applications submitted near the deadline that constitutes fraud. They should have either made their deadline earlier or informed people around September not to submit anymore.

i'm with you on this, and i got accepted.

does anyone know if there's an official way to file complaints, maybe through the AAMC? i bet if enough of us do it they'll start to listen...
