Thanks xmsr3 and dru2002 for the interview day comments. Glad the day went well for both of you. I've finished all the DoDMERB exams and just got an email from my student host. The host seems like a wonderful person and should be able to give some good advice before the interview. This school has already made a great impression on me.

I had a really great day at USUHS on Thursday also. Everyone (students, staff, other applicants) were really friendly and welcoming and it really helped ease the potentially stressful situation of being interviewed.

My second interview ended up going 5-10 minutes over and by the time I got back to the admissions office I missed the sim center bus! While I really did want to go (it sounds amazing!!), I also didn't want to be checking my watch and ditching out on the interview... hopefully I'll get to check it out at the second look next spring!! :xf:

Good luck to everyone, whether you are waiting for acceptance news or have an upcoming interview!! :luck:

Yep, 2/3 Navy applicants where in navy whites and playfully ribbed the Army and AF applicants because they got to wear short sleeves while the other branches were decked out in full formal regalia.

At the Q&A lunch it was only 2nd years, this I specifically remember. It makes sense since first years where in there third week and so couldn't answer many questions pertaining to the curriculum.

As for mentioning my host's name, I sincerely don't think he would mind. He is the coolest guy I have ever met and I am sure will make one hell of an officer and doctor. At the end of my interview day I went up to Joan Stearman to thank her for all her help, (and apologize for the many emails I sent🙂 and I specifically told her what a great host he was, a true credit to the Army, the school and hosts everywhere.

If anyone here is lucky enough to get him as a host they are in for a real treat.

Sorry Scooter, that you missed the sim center, not only was it cool but I found the ride over and back on the shuttle to be the best part of the day(perhaps in part to all the pressure being off). It reminded me of this awsome class overnight field trip my elementary school took once.

Me and my friends spent the whole time shooting the breeze and it was the highlight of the year. It was the same feeling on the shuttle, (actually a 15 person van). I swear I have never gotten to feel so comfortable so quickly around any group of people as I did my van mates.

I especially appreciated the chance to get to know and hopefully spark some long term friendships with other applicants who where also going for the Army, specifically Kim Dong and Tim Hunter, (luck bastard is stationed at Pearl Harbor and has spent the last couple of years living out my dream😀 If you guys are reading this send me a PM, I'd love to stay in touch and hear how things go, especially with Tim and your issues with the coast guard.

Again, best of luck to all class of 2014 applicants and to add extra encouragement for the Sep 24 interviewees, remember that you too will get your conditional acceptances on Oct 16, (Joan said that the adcom goes through 20 apps/week and there are about 20-25 people/interview group, so maybe the oct 1 group may hear the good news by Oct 16 as well. The next 3 groups will have to wait until Nov 1 as USUHS only sends out conditional acceptances every two weeks.

Once the conditional acceptances go out the USUHS class of 2014 facebook group should go up and we can start to get to know our awsome classmates😀

To USUHS! The Best looking and fittest medical school in America!😀

Na, there were some first years in the group. The one who gave the tour to my group was only there 3 weeks.

You don't think he would mind but you don't know so if I were you I'd edit his name out of your posts. It isn't like having his name in there is adding anything to your post and I know most people aren't all that comfortable with posting details about their lives attached to identifying information on internet forums. (he hosted you not student doctor network, posting about how much you liked your host is fine, posting about what you did is fine but just keep the personally identifiable information out of there) There are worse things but since he isn't an official representative of the university it's just bad internet manners to put that stuff in your post.

I wouldn't worry about it. There is some cool stuff there which is why they show it to the prospective students but I remember just being exhausted after the tour finished. The tour is ok but you really didn't miss much. The important stuff was all at the school.

Sorry about that, I didn't realize I was violating forum etiquette, I have removed his name from my posts and will not make that mistake in the future.

I'm interviewing 9/24, and for the first and probably only time in my life, I've grown out my hair to not-quite shoulder length. This is what the interviewers will expect to see based on the picture on my app. I know it'll be the first thing to go if I get accepted, and I'm by no means attached to it, but right now I kinda like it. Should I cut it before the interview? Thanks.

I'm a guy btw....

cut your hair. you're not just interviewing at any medical school. It may not hurt you, but its definitely not going to help you. You've got to realize that there's a certain culture that comes with USUHS and if you do end up coming here you don't want to be that guy that showed up to your interview with long hair that all of the 2nd years think is a clown and not serious about being an officer

I can guarantee you he'd be highly pissed if he knew you posted his name on a public forum.

also, there is no Major Billie who is a group commander. There is a Captain Billie who is the Army Company Commander

My apologies, I didn't remember her rank but assumed she had been there long enough to be promoted once. No disrespect to Captain Billie who was a wonderful fount of information.

Another quick question, are we allowed to have our cell on us during the interview day or do we have to check them at security? Second, more importanly, what's the over/under on someone making a crack on Thursday about crying during the interview and how many people will get it?

I got 20 on their being a crack!

xmsr3 you are ridiculous. you cried tears of joy during your interview?

I apologize for the misunderstanding. I did not cry tears of joy or tears of distress.

What happened was during my first interview when I was explaining my motivation for military medicine and why it meant so much to me I told a very personal story, specifically why I want to go to USUHS.

It was such an emotional tale it brought tears to my eyes, but only because it meant so much to me. I am sorry that I seem to have offended certain people here. Perhaps they believe the tears where a tactic to try to improve my odds.

I assure you that I did not plan them, they were unexpected and genuine.

I feel confident that my interviews got across my sincere passion for mil med, that I am in it for the right reasons and that I would make an excellent addition to the community there which is why I think I did so well.

Boss, time to get those emotions in check. What are you gonna do when your best friend hits an IED and comes into the aid station torn to pieces. When everyone is looking for you to stay cool, calm and collected. You gonna break down and cry or are you gonna man up and do your job. If you can't control yourself in an interview it isn't looking to good you will be able to in this situation.

I've tried to give you the benefit of the doubt about being overzealous and a little naive. I hate to say it but you need to think long and hard about your dreams of becoming a military physician because I see a long and painful future for you in the military.

you can have your phone!! Good luck, can't wait to hear about how it goes on Thursday!

First of all let me assure you that I am not some overly emotional buffoon who lets his passions rule him. Normally I am a very dedicated and proffesional person who lives by the credo "mission first" meaning responsibility always comes first and r&r of any kind must be earned.

My passion for USUHS stems from very personal reasons, which is why recounting them brought tears to my eyes.

To say that I am unqualified because my passion for military medicine is so great is offensive to me because you know not my story or why I want this more than anything.

When I first came to sdn I was wracked with fear at not getting into med school which is the last place you can fail to ever become a doctor.

This fear led me to make terrible mistakes on this board, including exuding an arrogant sense of entitlement, or at least this is how it appeared to many. I learned from my mistake and have tried to make amends by focusing all my efforts on supporting my fellow applicants, as my posts of the last 2 months will attest to.

I will continue to do so because I want to make this thread a place where a strong community supports each other.

I would simply ask that the people I offended in early summer please forgive my early foolishness and stop looking for reasons to question my character.

The truth is that I am a dedicated young man, passionate about spending the rest of my life serving my country but offering the best medical care I can offer to the heroes who selfleshly put their lives on the line to defend the freedoms upon which this great nation was founded. I will make an excellent military doctor because discipline, dedication and service to one's community are things that I grew to appreciate and love due to a very personal reasons and I am in it for all the right reasons.

Anyway, I have said my peace and now it's time to focus on what really matters, thursday's interviews. Who here is in the second group? As far as I know me, dru and scooter where in group 1, with about 9 or 10 people on this thread applying.

For group 2, keep those questions coming. Any info that we can share to make your interviews less stressful is info all those of us in group 1 are happy to share.

Here is something I would volunteer as useful pertaining to food. The cafe in front of the library closes at 1600 and stops serving soup at 1500. They do accept credit cards and the prices are not too bad, but you may want to bring your own food to save money. I found the subway near the Bethesda metro station to be a convenient place to stock up for the next day.

It's 4 blocks from the entrance to the station, just turn right and go straight.

Oh and bring cash as a plan b for the metro. The ticket machines stopped accepting my credit card for some reason and I would have been stranded if not for the kindness of the station manager who gave me a free ride voucher.

One other piece of useful info, for those of you who need to access the net on campus, the library has computers you can use, BUT only the macs are accessible without signing in.

Well, those are the only details I can think of for now but I will post anymore I think could help improve the experience of anyone here who has yet to interview. And as always, please post questions if you have them.

Goodluck to group 2 applicants, I look forward to hearing your, hopefully, joyfilled reports.

You can have your phone but reception kinda sucks inside the buildings at USUHS. (I turn mine off during the day or else the battery drains way to fast) Obviously just make sure it doesn't ring during your actual interview.

thanks. I couldn't get work off for thursday night so I need to call in at some point that day, and there's a certain window for doing it

My host told me that USUHS is legendary for its terrible mobile reception but I didn't notice it. Perhaps it sucks inside the buildings, (I never tried to call from one but I think I got 1 or 2 bars inside the library) but step outside and your fine.

It depends on what service provider you have and how good your battery is. I have verizon and a fairly new battery and spending the whole day (0700-15/1600) here I usually go from full charge to about half. When I came for my interview last year my phone died while I was here (still verizon but older phone) which was a bit of an inconvenience when I needed to call my hotel shuttle to pick me up later that night. I think verizon gets the best service here - some of my classmates turn theirs off when they don't need it in order to conserve battery.

Oh, and I don't know what they're telling prior Navy applicants to wear, but we as tour guides are in SDBs - you can wear them any time in the year not just winter.

As to the rest of the conversation here... :bang: and :beat: 😛

Thanks for the advice. My DODMERB doc for my physical was a USUHS grad, and he said roughly the same thing. I cut it yesterday, and will interview Thursday "high and tight."

haha, you didn't need to go marine just for the interview. Just clean cut

Hello everyone. I've been lurking around in the shadows of this board, but decided that maybe I should get myself a login and participate. I was lucky enough to interview on Sept 17th with Dru2002, xmsr3 and others. I'm looking forward to working with all of you in the future. I love the military lifestyle, but it isn't for everyone. If there is anything I can do to help you make an informed decision on the military just ask.

Hey everyone who's interviewing tomorrow...

GOOD LUCK!! And have fun, everyone is really nice!! :luck:

Just wanted to wish everyone who is interviewing tomorrow luck! Chill out tonight and don't freak out about it. I know a few people have posted about last week, but I thought I'd add my impression. If you're a girl, you're going to be super out-numbered at both the interview and the school, so you might as well get used to it now if you're serious about USUHS. The morning session seemed to be a lot of information that you probably already know if you've done your research on the school (if you're on SDN, I'm sure you have), but some of the speakers had some additional information as well. The interviews were pretty laid back. There are four time blocks, so they try to schedule you 1st/3rd or 2nd/4th, but I know a couple of people had them back to back with no problem. You will have some downtime to meet other interviewees or talk to some of the staff. I don't remember who asked about cell phone reception, but I have AT&T and my phone worked fine everywhere I was. Both of my interviews were more like conversations than interviews. My second one was with a current 4th year female, which I found incredibly helpful and reassuring to know that normal young women go to this school, something I was wondering about. I'd recommend trying to talk with one of the current female students if you are a female applicant, or you can PM me because I probably asked her every kind of question you could think of, especially since I'm not prior service. I didn't get a chance to go to the SIM center, but I heard it was awesome. I know this is cliche, but just be yourself and act normal. If they offered you an interview, they already know you are academically qualified; they just want to see if you're socially acceptable too. Good luck!

To all group 2 members, best of luck and enjoy yourselves, you're in for a treat.

Two pieces of advice:

1. Make sure to not excercise or consume caffeine tonight, because you need to make sure you get a good night sleep.

I went for a walk around downtown bethesda and had a diet coke and that, combined with my excitement kept me up until 0100 local time.

2. To overcome nervousness over the interviews try focusing on how absolutely awsome USUHS is, (the morning briefings will help a lot).

Then whenever you start to feel nervous at the thought of the interview, (and you almost certainy will at some point) try smiling really wide, a big goofy grin.

This will trigger endorphin release in your brain which will make you happy. Combine that with positive feelings about the school and you have high excitment replacing high anxiety.

You will go into your interview happier, grinning and a more positive person, thus making a better impression.

Anyway, good luck though I know that if your reading this on SDN you certainly don't need luck.

I look forward to hearing interview day tales from my future classmates😀

What?

If someone's late tomorrow it's me just for all your information. Staying with my brother who made his place sound a lot closer then it really is. Will be catching the first VRE north and still might cut it close.

Excercising helps me sleep...

exhausting yourself might help you sleep, but unless you are really pushing things hard you will just boost your epinephrine levels, since that is the neurotransmitter of the sympathetic nervous system, which is what you are stimulating when you work out.

Dwb8p, the physical act of smiling has been found to improve people's moods, even the clinically depressed. In other words, smile to be happy not because you are happy.

Now there are limits to the power of smiling, but I certainly have found it works well with dealing with the kind of anxiety one has going into an important interview.

Oh and one more thing, due to mirror neurons we humans have, the act of smiling a big grin can cause others to due the same. This can create a smiling loop, (they smile because you are smiling, then you smile even harder because they are smiling and so on) that can morph into a giggle loop, (where they laugh because you are laughing and vica versa) which is not only a great way to break tension in the room but also an excellent ice breaker, (explaining the neurophysiology and psychology is fun and interesting to most pre-meds).

Ruiner, good luck getting there on time, remember that the briefings begin at 8 but the stuff they cover is pretty much already known by every SDN USUHS applicant. As long as you make it by 1100 and get your interview schedule you will be fine. Heck you could probably get that without going to the briefings if you were really late, (you need to drop off your papers and sign some other stuff as well anyway) so as long as you make it by 1300 you are fine.

Best of luck to all group 2 members. Your journey up to this point has been long and arduous, but the journey is almost at an end, so after the interviews try to reflect on what successes you are just to have made it this far.

ah that sucks -- they start rolling at 5 though, so I'd bet you're fine -- best of luck!

The first rule of fight club is you don't talk about fight club. the first rule of military institutions is typically "if you're early, you're on-time. If you're on-time, you're late. If you're late, you're screwed." The person who originally taught me that didn't say "screwed". Just in case someone actually thought arriving 5 hours late to an interview was acceptable (at any school/job/life activity).

I'll go ahead and save xmsr3 from writing a 3 page rebuttal (and everyone else from reading it):

I think he was just trying to put ruiner at ease in case he absolutely couldn't make it, and was in no way implying that being late is acceptable in the military, or for any interview.

Affirmative, but since the trains are rolling at 5, this is no longer an issue.

To any group 3+ members, remember to follow the military mindset.

Hope for the best, plan for the worst

Logistics, first second and third

Always bring to bear more than is necessary, better to have and not need than need and not have

In the case of the USUHS interview, make sure you google map where the school is, where you are staying and how to get to the school (from Reagan to the medical center metro is indeed 1 hour but it does take 15 minutes to get to USUHS from the metro and you need to pass through security, so have a printout of your invite and ID). Print out the maps, know how long it will take and double those times just to be safe.

Try to arrange to come to campus the day before so you can scope out where the buildings and especially where you will be checking in.

Check in starts at 730 but the office opens at 7 and you do need to drop off and fill out some minor paper work. Keep in mind that there are not enough chairs in the conference room for everyone so come early to both get a spot and to get to know your future classmates.

Trust me, being able to walk around, getting used to the uniforms, (for those coming from a civilian background) and learning where all the buildings are, as well as talking to your fellow applicants, especially the prior service ones, is invaluable towards putting you at ease, gaining valuable info and having a better day.

Good luck and I look forward to hearing how things go today.

For those who have already interviewed: What percentage of the students interviewing were wearing uniforms? Would it be reasonable to expect that this percentage is higher during the early interview dates?

I'm worried I'll stick out like a sore thumb in my suit!

On Sept 17th interview date there were 3 Navy officers, 1 USCG, 1 AF, 1 AF Academy and 2 ROTC students. I think there were about 24 interviewers so it was roughly 1/3 in uniform. During our interview day, one of the presenters said that last years class had 24 prior officers, 8 prior enlisted and 11 Academy grads. That is roughly 1/4 of the student body (170). Throw in a couple of ROTC students (I don't remember the exact number) and you are probably close to 1/3. Since the interview was roughly the same ratios as the class overall, I would guess that most of the interview dates will be similar. That is just a guess though. We'll have to ask future interview dates what their ratios were.

Good luck with your interview. Don't let the uniforms intimidate you. They really are normal people. Most will be more than willing to talk with you about the military if you ask them. If not ask the questions here and I know there are guys who will help you out.

When I interviewed early October last year there were only 2 people in uniform out of about 35 interviewees. So, I believe it just depends on the date.
Academy students and ROTC students sometimes don't get interviews until later because they get their letters later (this is just something I've heard from a couple of my classmates - I guess last year someone at USNA took his sweet time signing their letters).

Well, I hope those of you who interviewed had a better week than I've had. Looks like I'm out of the game until someone gets around to signing my release paperwork. Apparently that will take about a month (in addition to the two months that have already passed). Ah well. Hurry up and wait. You think you'll get used to it after awhile, but you never really do.

NavyCY I am sorry to hear about your problems. Are you still able to interview at USUHS? I know one person I met there was having trouble getting out of the Coast Guard to go and they still allowed him to interview. If all you are missing is your permission papers then you can still interview and get a conditional acceptance.

To group 2 members, what's up? Interviews are done and silence on these boards?

How did things go? What did you think of the school? Any advice for group 3?

To everyone in group 1,2,3 only 20 days until conditional acceptances go out!

So just out of curiosity how many people on this thread are applying to USUHS? If you have an interview what group where you?

I know that I, Scooter2, Dru and NavyCy where in group 1.

Ruiner and I believe one other person here where in group 2, interviewing on sep 24.

Teacherman84 is applying I believe, as is Raven.

Anyone else? Any group 3s out there? Group 4? People who are still waiting for interviews?

why does it matter? you're just being neurotic

Not being neurotic, just trying to get some discussion going on this thread since it seems to be dead at the moment.

For most of you, how long was the wait for your complete email from the point that all materials were sent in?
