Just wanted to let everyone know that the AF waitlist is moving. Got the call today. Interviewed 11/19. Waitlisted 1/27.

Good luck to all those waiting! Can't wait to meet everyone!

I hope that's Dr. Funke as in Dr. Tobias Funke.

ACCEPTED OFF THE WAITLIST!!! 😀 PHS (NIAID track)! Class of 2014! Good luck to all the waitlisters!!!

Accepted (AF) off the waitlist! Interviewed 11/19. Can't wait to meet you all. Good luck to those still waiting!

Congrats to those accepted off the wait list.

I will be seeing you next year👍.

Wow, I'm happy to hear all these people getting accepted off the waitlist. However, I wish we were hearing from some Navy people!

So I interviewed last Thursday, I guess one of the biggest groups as it was the last one. They said we shouldnt plan on hearing anything for at least 12 weeks. Thats the first week of June at the earliest according to them. That doesnt leave much time to get ready for officers training.

Very cool. Lots of options. I think I'll probably wait and see how the work load is after I get there, and then maybe start another degree if I can fit it in - I do think it would be pretty cool to do a dual degree program...
I know one of my classmates was getting his masters of public health at georgetown the same time and learning arabic, but he had to pay for that out of pocket and get special permission...

Can someone please explain the uniform buying process that we will have to go through. I will be going to Air Force COT in June so I wanted to get that taken care of before going down.

You will need to to find a nearby base and someone to sign you on. take the uniform list (go to the link below, it has the men and womens uniform lists) go to the uniform store and order what you need. The people at the store will know what you will need as far as rank, name tape and such.

If there's anyone in the San Antonio area that needs someone to get them on base so they can purchase uniforms, just send me a message. I'd be happy to help out. Lackland is really cool in that you can get uniform items altered same day.

I called the office last week, they said no Navy waitlist movement yet. (Hopefully this changes soon, of course.)

I can help with this too.
The ladies at the Lackland military clothing & alterations shops are the BEST. 👍

Also, if the list is accurate, then I can bring my BDUs (I'm ANG) and worry about buying new ABUs later...?
edit: nevermind, BDUs can be worn at COT for field exercises only.

Does anybody know or have information on past student loans and if military has a forgiveness or any other program for past outstanding student loans?

Yes, I am VERY interested in this question, since I just completed a masters degree at Penn, and it was NOT cheap. From what I remember from signing my federal loans, there is, I think/hope/believe up to 50% loan forgiveness for active duty military. I am assuming that this applies to our time at USUHS? Any current students know?

negative. Seeing as how they're paying you to get a professional degree. The gov't is pretty anti-double-dipping.

You have to enlist to qualify for loan repayment

Depending on how much we are talking there still might be some help. If you entering into income based repayment anything left on Direct Federal loans (you can consolidate non-direct loans to a direct loan and then use the program) after 10 years of repayment while serving in a non-for-profit (military counts) is forgiven. If you have around a 50,000 in loans you will probably pay it off before you reach ten years but if you have in excess of that it may work out in your favor. I haven't worked all the numbers but you can read more about it here:

Oh this news is very discouraging! 🙁 What can anyone tell me about second and third choices? Let's say AF was my second choice, would they exhaust the AF waitlist and THEN contact me?

Yeah I understand that it is discouraging, but remember that the deadline for applicants to drop down to only one acceptance is May 15th, which means that there are probably tons of kids holding on to multiple acceptances right up until that date. Expect most movement to occur after then...

Also, I have NO idea if this might work, but perhaps you could try to find out which waitlist is shortest, and then ask to be put on that one...? I mean, I feel like that chances of that working are pretty slim, but in my situation, I was put on the navy waitlist in Jan and I sent them an email telling them that I would be equally stoked about an AF spot. 2 days later they called me and offered an AF spot. But that was before AF was on waitlist, which I assume it is now... In any case, just throwing out ideas. Good luck tho!

oh... oh no...

Does anybody know how USUHS views husband and wife attending the school? Is it frowned upon/encouraged? Also what happens post residency? Do they try to station couples together??

they'll exhaust the waitlist and the entire alternate list. Your second choice doesn't count for much. You can always call and change your preference.

I'm not sure the school has a 'view' on it. I do know that there is a married couple (husband 2nd year, wife 1st year) attending now though. I also have a good friend who is a first year and his wife is a third year in the clinical psychology program. Those are the only two examples i can think of off the top of my head, but there could definitely be more here.

When you apply for residencies there are procedures set in place to help keep married couples together.

I would strongly recommend changing if you feel it will give you an advantage. Even though I am partisan to the navy and am staying in that service(no choice due to prior service), I think the army is actually the best deal and it has the most spots at usuhs, most choices as far as residency, and by far the largest medical corps. That being said, every trend in military medicine is towards a total alignment of all services seperate medical corps into a joint force(see national capital consortium, the new Walter reed, navy and af fill of army billets overseas). So in the next decade it might not matter much anyway.

I know that we are suppose to report to USUHS in the beginning of August but school doesn't start till end of August....what do we do in the meantime?

And it has been sooo long since my interview, but is class mandatory/have podcast or anything of that nature?

Thanks

Report to school, move in, brigade orientation, academic orientation, book issue, meet your sponsor, etc.

Lectures aren't mandatory, labs and small groups are. Yes there are podcasts/webcasts

Excellent! Does 'webcast' mean that the lectures are recorded for later viewing? I myself benefit from hearing a lecture more than once.

Hey,

For those who got waitlisted, how were you notified? EMAIL, MAIL, or PHONE CALL?

Also,
Has anyone that interviewed in late January been notified of their status?

Thanks

Anyone in the navy heard anything about commissioning paperwork yet? If not Silverhorse when did you and your classmates get them last year? Thanks

Anyone having trouble logging into the DoDMERB site for first time loggers?

You won't get anything until June. Most of us got them about a week before ODS. You'll be lucky if you get them before ODS (if you're going, I don't remember if you're prior or not) - the year before me they all commissioned at ODS because the paperwork didn't get to them until they were already there.

Prior service may get paperwork earlier depending on your situation.

The short of it: don't expect anything anytime soon!

People seem to be talking about navy and af. Any word on army waitlist?

where's the love?

Anyone having trouble logging into the DoDMERB site for first time loggers?

When I first logged in, I had trouble, and it took me a while to figure out what was wrong. In the instructions, it says that your last name will be your password or something like that, but my first name was the password. I don't know if this happens often, but it happened to me!

Thanks. Just curious because my lease ends in June and would like to use TMO to move me but I'm gonna need some orders for that. I'm prior-enlisted so I will be heading to ODS.

Thanks for all the great information! I didn't even know you can ask to change which waitlist you're on. I might consider changing from Navy to AF, but that depends on how I'd be placed on the AF waitlist. I'll call them tomorrow and let everyone know!

Right. I thought we'd at least have time for TMO. I don't have much cash to pay for the move up front... 😕

Can anyone tell me what, exactly, our orders will authorize? I'm AF, married, two cars, and moving from Texas...

Does anyone make an AKO account yet? or do we have to wait for orders

Yeah, let us know how it goes - good luck!

I can only tell you about the way I did it and I'm Navy, but I'd think its similar.
Once I got my orders, it had a number on it for who to call. That was someone in Colorado who designate the nearest base that would handle the move paperwork - it doesn't have to be your service, for me it was actually AF. You'll probably get bounced around a little since a.) its your first military move (I'm assuming) and b.) no body knows what usuhs is and we're a little different than the rest of the military. But eventually you'll get the right person - make sure you tell them you're an officer.

Since you have a wife you won't need to do this, but for those of you without a legal significant other. You'll need to designate someone to legally "speak for you." I had my father do it, and my parents, thank god, were willing to drive down to my house to be there when the movers got there. If you're going to ODS/COT/OBC you will not be there when they pick up your stuff. The military doesn't pay to move vehicles within the continental US. I paid to have my car shipped (coming from CA and didn't want to drive cross country).

If you don't get the orders in time, at ODS we had an entire class designated to how to set up a military move. You can arrange it from there (I don't know about COT and OBC but I'm sure you could). It'll be easier if you arrange it before hand, but don't worry if it doesn't happen.

I hope that helps. 😳
