I believe UASOM's only mandate is for the OOS tuition to be 3 or 4 times the IS tuition.

Last year (2009) they accepted 50% more OOS than 2007 and 2008--87 vs. 58 and 59. Also, they had a 80-90 person wait-list in 2009 vs. ~60 in 2007 and 2008. In 2007 and 2008 they oversubscribed by a lot. In 2009 I believe the margin was smaller. http://medicine.uab.edu/about/44733/

From inductive reasoning, the wait-list could be ~120 if they continue the trend of having a wait-list approximated at the number of OOS acceptances...and they actually accepted ~120 OOS applicants...

I'm assuming the higher number of OOS acceptances is to increase revenue. Any thoughts?

I was on the waitlist last year and I was told by UAB that it was 20 people/tier. Not sure where you got the 80-90 person waitlist... maybe I was given bad information.

Middle third. The wait begins - again.
Seems like the majority of the people on the waitlist must be following this thread.

To those who were rejected, best wishes for next cycle.

Doc are you sure about the "90" on the wait list ?? Auburn 05 said there were 60 on the wait list. Do you know which of you has the correct # of people that are on the wait list?

Meant 60 instead of 90. My bad

Rejected. It's great to know that almost half of the people that interview get in...and I didn't even get a waitlist of any kind...I don't have the greatest stats, but I thought I interviewed pretty well. Haha, obviously not.

I was told it was somewhere between 80 and 90. I think it was in the feedback that I was told this. That was for last year...not other years. I believe some other people have confirmed this.

Would it be pretty accurate to say that all of the upper third will be accepted?

I would think so. I think for the last 5 years or so, except for 2007, the whole upper third has been accepted.

Apparently in 2007 only 7 people got in off the waitlist.

So who is going to call UAB and ask how big their waitlist is? 🙂

Hey guys,

Sorry to those who were rejected today, keep the faith. To those on the wait list... good luck.

I will ask around tomorrow... well Thursday... I'm skipping class tomorrow... and see if I can find out some numbers for you guys. Dr. Smith is usually pretty amicable and I haven't spoken to him in a while so it might make for good small talk.

That would be wonderful if you could find out the following:
1. Is the class truly not overscribed?
2. If the class is overscribed - how many have they offered positions to?
3. How many people total are on the wait list?
4. If he will tell you, how many OOS did they offer positions to? (this could be a real clue as to how much the wait list will move.)

Thanks so much

Thank you so much for offering to find out more specifics, VanBrown 🙂 It would be great to have a better idea of where we stand.

P.S. Does anyone know if it would be completely pointless to send an update email to UAB containing info like recent grades and election into PBK? Are our exact positions on the alternate list pretty much set in stone right now or could providing additional info boost your chances of getting accepted?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure at this point every thing is set in stone. If not then every single person on the waitlist would be bombarding the admissions office with a ton of information, and they would basically have to have more committee meetings.

Ah...yeah, figured it would be a waste of time. I guess all we can do now is wait and hope for the best! But I'll still be checking my email obsessively every day. I guess, in that sense, nothing has really changed from the last few months XD

yay more waiting

Since changing the curriculum, UASOM has gone much farther down the waiting list---the last two years it went well into the bottom third (as some of you stated earlier). I actually know 5 people who got off the lower tier the past two years. So, while it's good to not completely rely on such things, it is not impossible and there is definitely some hope there! 🙂

Quite frankly, though, I'm wondering how they decided. I am a UAB student with a 27S and a 3.96 GPA...I have won some cool scholarships and have extensive shadowing, study abroad, research, and leadership...but it sounds like a lot of you on the lower third have better MCAT stats than me (which goes a long way in a school as MCAT-centered as UASOM)

Plus, I know 3 EMSAP students who are going to give up their seats. And 1 non-EMSAPer who is going to give up his seat....so that opens up 4 slots!

I would just like to know by the middle of June so that I can:

1) Drop Biochem
2) Go on a two-week vacation

Not sure if I'm taking it 100% yet, but it would be at UAB. I'm upper third (3.5, 32Q, IS).

If it were me... there's no way I'd be taking that.

So it's been pretty quiet on here today, I'm guessing nobody tried to ask about how big the waitlist is this year??? 😀

we are the same person. see who gets in first?

Yeah, I saw your earlier post and almost posted the same thing. Even our post bacc is the same (well, 3.91). Murphy's Law says that I'm at the bottom of the upper third, and that they don't accept the entire upper third.

if they've really let in as many OOS as everybody says they have (~120) then there's not a chance they don't get through the entire upper 1/3

Any idea how we can find out how many OOS they did admit and verify they have "not overscribed" the acceptances?

Unless you know someone that works in the admissions department, I think there is no way to accurately estimate the size of the wait list.

Regarding speculation on the exact size of the waitlist- you would have to assume that uab has made it large enough so as to assure that it has enough people to cover those who decline acceptances. No matter how large it is, one would think that, like some other years, it may dip down into the second tier but more than likely not the third. I'm sitting somewhere in the third right now. 🙁

so the list is moving.. a good friend of mine got accepted today from the upper third.

That's a good sign, the class really is not oversubsribed then.

Lol I just hope the waitlist doesn't have 150 people on it.

How sure are you that the waitlist has 60 people in it? Did someone from admissions say that? I'm sitting in the lower third. This is so frustrating.

woah...i was not expecting movement this early. hopefully the out of state people get scholly's to go to their in-state school or really good private schools. i hope it moves all the way into the third tier again.

We'll start the customary wait-list movement roll call.

DrHKitty's Friend (A: 4/8, 1st Tier)

Not really that sure, I think the last few years it's been 60 (even though someone on here said it was 80-90 last year, which makes sense).

I'd say it's somewhere between 60-90 haha

You also have to realize that the waitlist will have some attrition as well

hopefully van brown will get some info for us and post it. that would be awesome of him.

we're both wait-list vets. i was also third tier last year, and two of my friends got in off the third tier--one of them during orientation.

anybody have a guess at how many got in off 3rd tier last year? i couldn't find last years thread.

Good, atleast there might still be some hope for us at the bottom. What part of the waitlist are you on this year crimsonred?

I don't think anyone that posted on SDN who was on the lower third got in last year. People had friends though on the bottom third that got in.

I'm absolutely positive plus or minus 10 people. I found out today.

I know exactly how many, but I'm obligated not to say. Let's just say greater than half of those on the lower tier got in last year.

For real, this is an anonymous message board after all...

And it's not like it's top secret classified info

That is indeed a good sign that it is moving just 1 day after the wait list came out - I suspect that if not before, there will be a lot of movement come May 15th.

Also, I agree that the wait list itself will have some attrition because there are likely people on it that have gotten accepted elsewhere and they hopefully, will go ahead and accept those positions and drop from the wait list!!

let's just hope it does not have 150 people on it as you said!

My username is in fact my real name. Not so anonymous. Besides, those two previous statements together are more than enough to make a statistically significant judgement as to the size of the waitlist and any movement thereof (at least for last year. You'd be safe to assume it was similar the year prior).

As to top secret or not, I was told this information in some degree of confidence; you understand if I can't be entirely forthcoming.

Just review my past statement carefully--do the math.

Browsing the "Alabama Schools Thread Part 2!!" thread, the first SDN waitlister was accepted on 4/23. Just saying some on the upper third may hear before May.

10-4. Hopefully you got good information... that would be good news for all of us waiting :xf:

I received a letter last year in august to inform me that I could no longer be accepted off of the wait-list.

"This year 2261 students applied, 405 interviewed, and 275 acceptances were offered to fill the 175 positions. Of the 102 students placed on the alternate list, 75 were offered a position at UASOM and 11 of the remaining alternates were accepted elsewhere."

I'm not sure if the 75 in the alternate list are included in the 275 acceptances. I'm assuming they are...? This means there were 34 people per tier and 86 of those on the alternate list were accepted somewhere. So--last year--only 16 people from the wait-list DID NOT go to medical school in 2009. Also, they accepted 1 fewer person last year than they were supposed to--175 instead of 176.
