There was a wave of rejections an hour or two waitlist notification.I haven't heard of any re applicants getting accepted yet, i'm sure some have.

I got my email at 3:26 pm. I'm a second time applicant and now second time reject.

Got mine after the first rejection posts around 3:30PM.
3.82 GPA/ 29Q /IS /Rejected
My secondary still says campus choice received.
 
Your stats are good Doc. Mine are decent. What more do they want? I just don't get it. I know third years that got in with 24's. I don't even know where to go from here.

I'm sorry SarahLiz.... I have no clue what UAB wants from us. Is anyone doing the feedback? I wanna find out why they were so strict this year.
 
Waitlist - Lower Third.... duuurn... I rather of been rejected... kindda

Yeah, I'll do the feedback. I did it last year and they told me to retake the MCAT (check!), and take 2-4 classes (check!). If they tell me to go back to UAH for one more semester I might kill myself though. I don't know what I'm going to do, but it won't be school.
 
alternate - lower third. i didn't get an email but i checked my status page. i really don't know why i was placed this low (or other people were rejected) - it seems like we all had decent stats. i am instate with a 31/ 3.6 from a very reputable school. i don't think i did super on my interview (october), but i had great shadowing, decent research. glad i waited so long for this news.


does anyone know if people ever get in off the lower third?

That sucks Bama. With those stats you could reapply as early decision and probably get in just fine.

(edit) Just heard from another reapplicant friend who was also rejected.
 
Alternate - Upper Third - I don't know how to feel about that.

I'm sorry to everyone who got rejected today... After this process, I can honestly say I have no idea how they choose people seeing as I have a uGPA 3.4 and a 26 on the MCAT. Getting an interview was a shock to me so being placed on their waitlist is utterly amazing...
 
Just got the email: alternate list - upper third

3.64/35O/IS

Kinda have mixed feelings about it. Glad to finally hear something back from the school and relieved that it's not a rejection...but now I have to wait even longer to find out if I actually get in or not :scared:

I'm sorry about all of the rejections sent out today...I really don't know what the admissions committee is looking for. All of you guys seemed to have had really strong applications...I'm sure you'll get into a school somewhere, if not this year then next year.

anybody know about how many are in each tier? Or how many have come off lower 3rd the last 2 years?
 
Rejected at 3:44, also.

I actually thought i'd be waitlisted. And that most of us would be. WTH is going on here? Is there even a waitlist?

*sigh, now I have to wait for South, whenever that's actually going to go down. Hopefully I wont get wait-listed there.

Hope nobody drowns in their sorrows tonight. I think I'll probably be alright.*sigh

Alternate - middle third

Not really sure how to feel about that, a little bit better news than last year I guess (lower third).

I was on the lower third last year, and apparently they did dip down into the lower third and take a few people.

I'm not trying to discourage you, but I would start making other plans for next year. I really actually thought I had a chance of getting off the lower third last year, and it was a big let down once I got the final rejection.
 
is it possible that uab could have just accepted those out of state people just to buy them time on picking the instaters? maybe that's just wishful thinking tho..

20 in each tier, 60 in all. Apparently they took a few people from the lower third last year, but like I said earlier don't get your hopes up.
 
I found this pretty interesting...

Here is a part of my email from last year (lower third):

"While your specific place on the list will not be revealed, we can inform you that you are in the lower third of the Alternate List. In recent past years it has been rare that individuals ranked at this level have gained an acceptance to the incoming class. Currently the class is over-subscribed and it is possible it will be May before any alternate is accepted."

And here is the same part of the email from this year (middle third):

"While your specific place on the list will not be revealed, we can inform you that you are in the middle third of the Alternate List. In recent past years some individuals ranked at this level have gained an acceptance. The class is not over-subscribed and as accepted applicants withdraw, individuals will be accepted from the Alternate List."


Hmm. Thoughts??

I was shocked to finally see an email today. I got Middle Third on the alternate list...not sure what my chances are.

Anyway, best of luck to everyone else.

Yeah, sorry, not trying to be a ****, but somebody told that to me last year so I pretty much had to accept the fact that I wouldn't be getting in.

There always is a chance though.

I got lower 1/3 tier also.

I am not getting my hopes up - but seems like based on prior posts there might be a lot of movement after May 15th - is there anyway to find out once that happens (May 15th) how far they are reaching down on the wait list to get a better idea?

This is a good thing for you guys. they usually accept 1.5times the amount of seats expecting people to withdraw. if the email was written correctly then its right at the full level and if about the same amount of ppl withdraw this means alot of waitlist movement.

You could always call at that time and see if they would tell you anything. Also you can just keep checking on here to get some sense of where they are on the waitlist movement.

So apparently the class is not over subscribed at this point... that has to be a good thing for everyone on the waitlist I would think.

I agree that the fact the class is not NOT over subscribedf at this point is good news - does anyone know in the past how oversubscribed the class was (i.e. how many total were accepted last year vs the 176 actual class size)??

last year 275 total people were accepted 188 instate and 87 oos to fill the class of 176

if they've really only let in 174 people (which i kind of doubt) and 120 are out of state (of which only i'd expect only about 20-30% would accept) then that has to be good news for waitlisters. i really don't want to expect that i could get in off lower 3rd, but those 2 things are good news. guess i'm back to waiting again.

OK - just found the answer to my own question on UAB's "facts and figures" page - last year (2009) they accepted 275 for the 176 seats so that means about 100 that were accepted dropped out - is it way too optomistic to think that almost 60 would still drop out using the same percentage of past drop outs (i.e. 64%)???
 
I also got placed on the lower third. Never been a bigger fan of attrition.

Doesn't sound too far fetched if they truly are not over-subscribed. I just plan on expecting the worst, and if they do pull me off the waitlist it will be a great surprise.

i dont think it's optimistic to think that the same percentage would drop out, but i do think it's a bit optimistic to think that they've really only let in 176 people so far. if they did that i just don't see why they would only have 60 on the alternate list, especially if there's a larger percentage of OOS acceptances this year.

Yeah I agree with you. Maybe they have a larger waitlist?
 
upper third: 3.54 undergrad GPA, 4.0 graduate GPA, 32Q, reapplicant, in-state.

I know it does not make any difference now - but I would like to know what the adcom was possibly thinking by admitting so many OOS students to a state medical school??
 
What number exactly am I the lower third of? And why do some of you think it's 60?

I tend to think it was for economical reasons. they get alot more money from an oos person than an IS person... just a thought

Surely that is not right - I would think their mission, as a state medical school, is to train future physicians to fill the physician needs for the state of Alabama and OOS students won't likely stay here. There has to be some other reason.

What I would like to know is exactly how many are on the wait list this year so that all of us on the wait list can get a feel for what the chances are that we will get in.

I believe UASOM's only mandate is for the OOS tuition to be 3 or 4 times the IS tuition.

Last year (2009) they accepted 50% more OOS than 2007 and 2008--87 vs. 58 and 59. Also, they had a 80-90 person wait-list in 2009 vs. ~60 in 2007 and 2008. In 2007 and 2008 they oversubscribed by a lot. In 2009 I believe the margin was smaller. http://medicine.uab.edu/about/44733/

From inductive reasoning, the wait-list could be ~120 if they continue the trend of having a wait-list approximated at the number of OOS acceptances...and they actually accepted ~120 OOS applicants...

I'm assuming the higher number of OOS acceptances is to increase revenue. Any thoughts?

That would mean that 96 would decline leaving the waitlist open. Only 90 people fit on the waitlist. UAB would look pretty bad if every single person got in off the waitlist and even worse if they had to call 6 rejected people and accept them. Wouldn't complain about that but it makes sense that they would wait for more withdrawals so they can formulate a good waitlist that matches a "norm" of waitlists.

Doc are you sure about the "90" on the wait list ?? Auburn 05 said there were 60 on the wait list. Do you know which of you has the correct # of people that are on the wait list?
 
One of my good friends interviewed with a large number of OOS students. He asked one of his interviewers why there seemed to be a large number of OOS students and the interviewer replied something along the lines of "UAB is a nationally recognized medical school, and we would like to represent that in our student body." or something like that. Granted, they can only take so many OOS students since it is a state school, but it seems like they're trying harder for those students than IS students. Just my thoughts.

Anyway, I'm waitlisted. Middle third. 35+ MCAT 3.7+ GPA.
