UCI is teh same way actually. The campus itself is in Irvine, while the medical center is in orange, which is about a 20-30 min drive from the irvine campus. UCI med center is actually right across the street from angels stadium if that means anything to anyone 🙂
Ohhh... I was wondering why Aggro said Irvine was near the ocean, since I distinctly remember the undergrad campus being in the middle of a desert when I visited in high school.

I just processed my payment and now I can't login...this sucks.

Did everyone get their secondaries on the same day? When were you guys AMCAS verified? I'm pretty nervous I haven't gotten one yet... :xf:

Just to check, can anyone else login? I just want to make sure this isn't an issue on my end.

What the hell? They took my money, and now I can't certify my app. This is nuts.

I was verified on 6/3 and I got the 2ndary the 1st day it came out, i forget what day that was but it was like 1-2 weeks ago

It suddenly decided to work. Whatevs.

Aww, really? UCSD last? Where's the San Diego love? 😍 Awesome school, sunny+70 deg all year 🙂 lol

I also love the Prime program at UC Irvine! ANY UC school would be amazing!

I meant they're all equal to me.

My AMCAS was verified on 07/17, and I got the secondary on 07/20.

In the personal comments section, would the admin committee think I'm lazy if I don't come close to the 1800 char. limit? I can write more, but I don't want to write for the sake of writing and annoy them...

I don't think so. It's a limit, not a requirement.

Has UCI DLed anyone's letters yet?

I just called UCI and the lady told me that they are still dealing with 2009 applicants, and that they haven't even started to download 2010 applicants' materials. She said they will start doing so around the second week of august and the status will be changed then.

My LOR status is still incomplete as well....I'm assuming everyone else is the same way?

Oh geez, I didn't know they were still dealing with 2009 stuff.

Right now I'm doing some volunteer work but also searching for research assistant positions. For the last question under the personal comments section they ask for us to write what we are doing at the moment. Let's say I just write down the volunteer work I'm doing right now and send it in. Once I get a job, can i update this information or somehow let them know that I'm working in a lab even after i send in my secondary?

I have finished everything, but my Letters have failed to show up, should i be worried, or is it just going to take a while for amcas to send them in?

* i manually added a packet of letters (that will be sent by amcas) to the LoR page, don't know if that matters or changes anything *

same thing here.

Mine took about 7-8 days from when I submitted it to be marked complete.

The undergrad and medical campus is 5 minutes away from the beach.

Whew, complete. They're pending review.

I never got an email yet indicating anything, i was verified a few days ago...should I be worried?

For the Prerequisites section of the UC Irvine secondary.... do they want you to put in all of the Bio courses you've taken (for example) or just the minimum they request (3)? If so, I have more biology and chem classes than will fit...

probably just the minimum, that's what i did. most applicants will have way more bio classes than needed.

does anyone know what exactly the "one month" secondary deadline means?

It's outlined rather clearly in their instructions PDF.

UCI Secondary Instructions said:
Upon e-mail notification that you have been invited to submit a secondary application, you have one month to submit it online and complete the secndary application process. For the secondary application to be considered complete the following two components (three if you are a Permanent Resident) must all be received by the Office of Admissions and Outreach within one month of receiving the secondary application:

  1. Letters of Recommendation (see below for more information)
  2. Secondary Application Fee
  3. Permanent Residents
So, if you're like me... you're waiting impatiently for a letter writer to finish up since you don't exactly have all month.

What is this permanent resident thing you're talking about?

EDIT: Nevermind, it's Permanent Resident, not permanent resident.

Hey hey hey. A school without a football team doesn't need a fierce mascot thanks. We are perfectly comfortable with a yellow slimy slug.

I second that! I'm a UCSC alum applying, and did fine on the MCAT, and got a bunch of secondaries so booya UC Berkeley. Plus, I got to go to the beach a lot. Anyways, time to stop procrastinating on this UCI essay!

Sacramento is still a terrifically unexciting city. I mean, I haven't spent a lot of time there, but trying to find things to do there after hockey games was an exercise in futility. No matter, Irvine > Davis/Sacramento for location.

If any adcoms happen to be browsing this thread looking for reasons to reject people, let it be known that a terrifically unexciting city means that I will spend less time off-campus and more studying, which could potentially make me a better doctor. I'd be happy as a clam at Davis.
👍

For all those non-anal SDNers out there still waiting for a secondary: I just called the admissions office and they said that they have not yet download applications that were verified on Monday.

EDIT: Whoops, I meant to post this on the UCLA thread...but it's probably true for UCI too.

anyone know what the numerical screening cutoffs are? i'm pretty sure i'll make it, but just wondering. or do they actually read the essays?

its not all numbers based...you get points for each section, meaning gpa mcat, ecs, life experiences, etc etc...if you are above X score and have nothing less then a certain score in each category you get a 2ndary. They are not inflexible though as they do read all apps to make sure non slip through the cracks due to odd circumstances (i.e your gpa blows but the past 3 years you got a 3.7+...but its a 3.3 on paper because of one bad year. )

In addition to the secondary, they also used a point system for interview invitation. There are three categories: mcat/gpa, personal statement/secondary/lor, extracurriculars (research, leadership, etc.).

Each section is worth 5 points for a total of 15 points. To be rewarded with an interview, one must get 11+ points.

If you are the average joe and get 3's on each section, then you won't get an interview. Thus, it is important to write a good secondary.

My sources are both from a former adcom and a current adcom at uci.

for those that are close or borderline though, they do get a 2nd look for interviews, but if you are jsut way far off then yah, not much of a shot. Either way rest assured UCI really does look at each applicant holistically and take into acct more then numbers thats for sure.

Question about prereqs: If I understand correctly, 2ndary states you need 1 semester of upper div bio (equiv to 2 quarters). However, on the UCI SOM Admissions main page, it states 1 course of upper div bio - I had interpreted that to mean 1 quarter, which is all I have. I emailed medadmit, but rec'd an automated response that they are busy with the c/o 2013 and can't respond until after the 13th. Can anyone clarify the prereqs for me? I can take another quarter of upper div bio if necessary, but it will be pain b/c I'll have to go through Extension, which means I get last priority on classes.

congratulations... keeping fingers crossed, hopefully i'll get one too, i was complete 7/30

should i be happy that i got a secondary from uci??? do they screen?? i dont know if i should be jumping up for joy but i dont want to get my hope up and get rejected! lets hope this doesnt end too soon.. +)
