no! michigan, wait! let me send you my grade updates from this fall before you reject me!!

p.s. do i count as a michigan resident if i grew up there and went to umich undergrad, even though i'm technically not bc i moved out of state last year? :xf:

If your parents still live in Michigan, you are a resident.

You should have filled out some residency forms at some point if you thought you were a michigan resident.

Oh Michigan, how I loved thee. It looks like December invites are off the table at this point and I'm leaving the country in a few weeks for 4 months to do medical volunteer work overseas.

It's too bad- Mich was my 1st choice. Glad that I got a bunch of great interviews but it's hard not to feel wistful when I see someone in a UMich sweatshirt. Haha I suppose you can't win 'em all.

Good luck to all of you who have interviews or are waiting for a decision- fingers crossed for you!

Are you guys able to log into your status site? I can't.

they don't. i didn't even know where i was a resident when i applied, because my parents and i both moved to different states at around the same time.

i was mostly kidding, i just know that most of the remaining invites are going to MI residents so i was like :xf:

If you haven't filled out the MI residency form that they have as part of the application yet, will they still consider you a MI resident.
I was born and raised in MI, and my parents still live there, but I go to school out of state...
I thought that it wasn't necesary until after we got in or something, but now I'm a little nervous...

DECEMBER DEFERRALS REPRESENT!!!

I've had that status since October. Seriously, how many other folks here are in this curious conundrum? Let's make a spreadsheet or something to fill the time. :-B

Not to bum anyone out but deferrals basically meant waitlist last year. I think a couple people got accepted, but most people did not get a fun video during Christmas time.

what does it mean if I'm still under review since August 5th lol?...probably not good.

This has come up before, but there is evidence to suggest that last year's thread wasn't a representative sample. A student I met at my interview told me she was accepted after a deferral, in fact. Are you at U-M now?

No, I got waitlisted low tier and withdrew. I'm not saying that the deferral is a deathlist, but most deferral--> accepted people that I know were waitlisted and accepted later.

oh they tell you your tier on the waitlist? that's nice to know. so does upper tier generally indicate a good thing?

Yes. Lower tier = rejected traditionally since forever.
Middle tier= occasional love (and maybe the chance to push yourself up to top?)
Top tier = where acceptances come from until they run out of people in top tier.

Though I'm OOS, making my chances much more remote, I really hope that I, too, will be able to interview here. This school began relatively middle-of-the-road on my list, but over time has climbed by leaps and bounds to stand head-and-shoulders above the rest. What a great program; students seem happy, relaxed, and the school seems incredibly attentive to their needs. And Ann Arbor is one of the best cities in which I have lived, by far. I almost regret not being IS anymore, even though I love my hometown.

Additionally, this open admissions process, while frustrating at times, is far superior to that of some other schools, who keep you waiting with no news until March.

Good luck, everyone!! I'll keep my fingers crossed that we all find a place somewhere!

I wonder why they posted this on Twitter:

"Admissions: Random or a method to the madness?"

Anyways, even if the process isn't random, I still think the concept of deciding if someone is a "good fit" is somewhat random, at least pre-interview.

I don't know if the process is random.

I think schools have a very clear idea of what kind of applicant they're looking for.

But since we don't know what qualities they're looking for, the process appears to be random and might as well be to us.

honestly, I would love an interview from here but even if I don't get one I really appreciate having the twitter feed to obsessively check. It's mildly entertaining and if nothing else it reminds me that these adcoms are really thinking about whats going on and its not like they meet once a month and forget about the applicants in between. I know I sure don't forget about schools in between their meetings.

they closed hundreds of files today....has anyone gotten one of these?

I'm staring at my screen and its still a (preinterview) deferral

ditto... does that mean we still have a shot or is it all an illusion :ninja:

i hope we still have a shot. guess i might be in the clear? hopefully our status pages update as quickly as the twitter. im still under review.

5 bucks says tomorrow morning (like 2am) an email goes out to all of us telling us about an update....

with a rejection in hand.

i dont think they have informed anyone about pre-interview rejections yet..we dont know if our files have been already closed..if you have been complete for a while i doubt we'll be receiving interviews now..maybe if your in-state you might still have a chance.please someone correct me if I am wrong..thanks

That's better. 😀

i'm pretty sure that people whose files have been closed have had that reflected on their status in the past.

(that's not to say that i'm necessarily overly optimistic that i'll suddenly get an interview)

I got rejected last year. There was no email, my status just updated to "File Closed."

In fact, i can still log on. That happened on 1/27/09.

im 100% positive there have been some rejections. Scroll up this thread and there are some ppl that have the rejection message

I survived today's file closing! not sure how but I did! (assuming they've updated the pages)
I may be out of state but I refuse to lose what ever glimmer of hope remains by having an open file!

i apologize for giving the wrong information then...anyone's status change to File Closed today?? maybe the status will change tomorrow as someone mentioned... 🙁

Interview Invite today!! OOS...

I didn't get an e-mail.. my status page just changed.

congrats! i still havn't been rejected yet, but heres to hoping that it takes into account the large case of file closings. I have a feeling that the lag between actual close and the website may take a few days

im not the most optimistic guy anymore... 🙁

ditto! :xf:

They're setting their second deferral date earlier this year, in February instead of March. They also seem to have given out fewer acceptances than at this time last year. How very curious...I suppose the additional info later this week will be how many deferred people they plan to admit.

JJFoshay, I think I recognize you from your MDApps! We sat next to each other during Dean Gay's talk. The day was awesome; I hope you hear good news soon...

Hey, thanks, I hope things go well for you too! I remember the U-M interview day as the most fun I've been too -- I think their enthusiasm brings out the best in the interviewees, and I'd love to have the people I met as my classmates.

you know its funny on days like today you realize how long its been since youve submitted your app or are waiting for another review. In july when I submitted it was 90 degrees here in chicago. Today the high is 8 degrees where I live. It finally hit me today how long its been, and then I checked the michigan tracker:

572/650 interviews, a majority which go to MI residents. Probably leaves like 20-30 for the rest of us.

Man its been long...

Surprised no one on SDN has gotten one of the few remaining invites. Hopefully one of us will (me preferably).

Per ze twitterion:

"Number of candidates under consideration for defer decisions in December: 40 (13 Residents/27 Non-residents). More details to come."

That's a pretty sizeable number...but they could still offer all 40 appointments and only fill 25% of the offers they have left to give out.

I didn't have much luck skimming through this thread, but I'm interviewing soon and am not sure what to expect during interview day. How many interviews do we have and are they open/closed? Faculty and student? Also, do the tours have outdoor portions? Can someone go over quickly how the day is structured? Are interviews morning or afternoon? Thanks!

3 half-hour open interviews, faculty and student. Tours are all indoors -- all buildings are connected. The interviews are bunched into a small portion of the day and the rest is relaxed tours and info sessions with admissions staff and students -- not too stressful.

sounds like a day of reckoning as my friend put it.

Very long, deliberative AEC meeting just concluded. Decisions for all M.D. candidates reached--will be reported BY tomorrow at noon.
