did yall send thank you notes to your interviewers?

I sent handwritten thank you letters to both of my interviewers...if you send them to the admissions office they will hand them out.

Hey all. I'm a new member but a relatively long time reader of this forum. Im actually a re-applicant, and I went to the post-rejection feedback meeting they offered last year. I was basically told that they "really liked my application and my interviews went well, but they wanted to see me bring my MCAT score up a few points..."

Well, I knew the MCAT score was the weakest part of my application, so I wasn't entirely surprised. Well, I did fairly well on the MCAT compared to the first time when I didn't study correctly or enough, and raised my score 6 points.

I actually felt like I bombed the second interview, but I felt that way last year and they told me my interviews went very well. Anyone ever feel that way?

Any responses would be appreciated...

Mooshika

I mean, i think that's why you have two interviews instead of just one... my advice (which will probably be hard to take- bc i probably couldnt take my own advice) is that you should stop worrying about it because it is out of your hands at this point. what happened happened and you did what they asked for last year and to me from what you said didn't seem to be too bad... maybe they were even giving you a harder time on purpose because you are a reapplicant?

Same here... 🙁

Do you think it would be worth putting in a call to the admissions office to see if we've been reviewed and put on a sort of hold, or if they haven't reviewed us for some reason? I'm not sure how receptive the office is to calls like that....

I am thinking of doing the same thing... I interviewed end of october and would absolutely love to end up here, but who knows...

They can't tell you anything. They said they are not allowed to say whether you have been through the committee or not yet.

yeah just chill i mean... there were people on last year's thread that waited from oct/nov till march and still got in. from my understanding everyone who is interviewed is considered- ie their app is looked at- probably within the next two meetings after they interview and then the sub committee decides to put some through to the large committee and others to not. the ppl that get called after 2wks are at the top of the list- the ppl that really stand out- and those that have to wait longer are lower on their list. but clearly you guys havent been rejected and theyve already given out some rejections so that means you are still being considered. but at this point, its out of your/our hands. we just have to wait. and unc is notoriously slow.

Good to know, I was under the impression that they could give out info based on what the interview coordinator said. Oh well.

blurp.

Oh I forgot to mention I interviewed back in October. By the way I think it helps giving them a call. I gave them a call everyday three weeks because my ability to attend med school greatly depends on the amount of scholarship/financial aid/loan I can get my hands on. I nearly dropped out of undergrad my first year because money became a major issue but luckily I earned an athletic scholarship through football my sophomore year which covered housing, food (dhall), the whole nine yards etc. So yeah as you can imagine I could not wait to find out if I was accepted or not so I could figure out how to get my deposit and figure out how I'm gonna finance this massive investment. Short story, I personally think calling lets the admissions know that you deeply care about their school and that you truly want to attend their school regardless if its your number one pick or your safety school...who knows maybe it can be that border line decision factor

Just to check, surely you mean a call every three weeks, not every day for three weeks, right?

Also, congrats! You sound like a great applicant.

Anyone try to contact someone in the office about status? I emailed last week and have not heard back yet. Also, I called and the person that answered the phone was very unhelpful. They were like "I don't understand the question." (?) Is it usual for NC schools to give no correspondance for months? did anyone receive a 'thanks for interviewing you are on hold email' ?

I tired calling a few times today but always got the machine saying they were on the other line. I think it's safe to say that calling is pretty useless, they obviously don't want to talk to us.

Called last Tuesday to check my status and they just said (and I quote), "No decision has been made yet on your file. Hang in there." So basically, yeah, even if you get a hold of someone, they don't tell you much.

thanks for the input. glad I am not the only one. Just sad bc like all of you they are my first choice. Does anybody know who to address an letter to? I asked that and was told just to send it to the main address, but i don't think anyone will read it. And i emailed it to the person we sent our secondaries to and no reply from her yet. Although it is a holiday...

i mean just put yourself in their shoes: they have 6000 people who obviously want to know whether or not they got in. think about how many people probably call them every day. they are not going to just say "oh actually you DID get in, we just were waiting to tell you so that you can feel miserable for a few more weeks." clearly if they havent called you its because they havent decided if they want to accept you or not. thats it. they arent playing games and trying to make us miserable, there are just a lot of good candidates and they cant let everyone in. personally i would be pretty annoyed getting a million phone calls after id already told ppl they i couldnt tell them anything anyway.

Not saying they are playing games. Would like an update after a few months. And other schools can do it so why can't they? Just want to know how they work and the best way to reach them. That is their job to deal with phone calls. Chill man

yeah woah sorry that wasnt meant to be so harsh. i guess just after reading last years thread, it seemed like about 20 ppl were calling daily asking about the decisions theyd made. Of course its part of their job to answer those calls but like they did make it pretty clear that they cant tell us that stuff...

when youre a waiter its your job to clean the tables, but its a whole lot nicer when people dont leave the table completely disgusting, ya know? so yeah its their job, but if 20 ppl call to ask something they already said they cant answer...

thats all i meant... didnt mean to offend anyone

how they work seems to be summed up in one word: slowly haha

Ok, so looking back through this thread, and through last year's as well, I've come to the conclusion that I am probably going to be rejected. It seems that people who got in, with the exception of FrenchToast (congrats, btw!), found out pretty quickly, like within 4-6 weeks. I am looking at week 11 post interview, haven't heard jack yet. Granted, ok, maybe I will get in next week or something, and yeah, I would be over the moon happy about it. But somehow I just don't see that happening, because I feel like if I had impressed them, I would have gotten in by now. It takes too much energy for me to get all worked up about maybe, possibly, hopefully getting a call or getting waitlisted 3 months from now.

Also I am sort of confused about this whole "everyone gets in in Jan. and Feb." thing. It seems (based on last year) like people get in periodically throughout the cycle and there isn't some big glut of acceptances going out in Jan. and Feb. Anyway, if anyone has some insight into why I shouldn't be of this opinion please let me know. This is a crappy feeling...

Don't despair Teddy Bear.... even if you're thinking is right about not getting accepted, there's still a chance you could get on the waitlist and those decisions don't come out until April or May. If you have to re-apply next year, get in touch with Joni and ask to speak to the Dean about the reasons for your rejection. Not only can they give you the best advice on your application, but it also shows interest.

Don't lose hope yet... you still have a few months!! And though the prospect of re-applying is daunting, it's really not that bad. I speak from experience when I say that going through it the second time is a lot better then the first (you know the process and have a bunch of tips on what you need to do to make your app more competitive if you talk to the Deans of the schools that rejected you). Good luck!

I share many of the previous sentiments. I, too, am waiting patiently beyond my 4-6 weeks. Still, if I am to be rejected, it will not wain my confidence - I know that I will be a doctor - but it will frustrate me to no end that I may have to repeat this process all over again.

yeah well i was looking over it at one point and someone this year said that they got in after 9 wks...

in addition to that you have to consider that they changed things a little this year it seems becuase they already gave out some rejections. last year they didnt give out any at all (at least on the thread) until march/april. this year theyve already given some out. SO you arent rejected yet! and you know.... even if you dont get in, its only one more year... it can feel like a lot but in the scheme of things its not THAT long...

good luck....

if you're getting those update emails now and then, I think you're in good shape. they keep bringing people up periodically. you haven't been rejected yet so they obviously like your application. it's SO hard to be in the waiting limbo but you should actively work to get your mind off of it.

this year's approach has been different from last year's so the whole glut of acceptances in Jan/Feb may not even apply anymore. just focus on other things, act as if you need to reapply and strengthen your credentials. if you get the acceptance call, then great. if not, you have your reapp plan already in full swing.

Thanks guys! I'm sorry I sounded so mopey in that post, it was just a rough day and I was throwing myself a little pity party I guess...

I got off my butt and worked out, which helped, and then it really helped having to do work for classes. Hard to mope if you're distracted. But thanks again for being supportive. It helps to have someone other than your mom to tell you to get back up and keep things in perspective 🙂

If you don't get in, Re-Apply, re-apply re-apply. Go to the exit interview review they provide. They will be straight with you. Do what they say. Apply to some other schools. I have worked too hard and have too much faith in myself to give up after one or even two tries. You are competing with the top, top students not just in academics, but in all kinds of accomplishments - the field is stacked. My MCAT is in the 85th percentile and I was bummed! How ridiculous is that. This is the 85th percentile of students who believe they are qualified for medical school, not the whole population, we LOOSE PERSPECTIVE easily! Don't give up and don't sweat it. I can promise that I am considerably older than you, so there is no rush.

Anybody have any experience with getting a response from emails? I emailed almost 2 weeks ago... no word. called and was told that i sent it to the right person. Some places take 2+ weeks, does UNC?

got a rejection email at the end of the day on friday. OOS, pre-interview

good luck to everyone 🙂

So is UNC supposed to meet today? I only saw one person that said they received a call two weeks ago.

Don't know for sure, but assuming they stick to their usual, I'd expect some lucky people will get calls tonight.

*hope one of those lucky people is me*

no call tonight, but no rejection email either. So maybe thats good.

No call here. This is really getting to me.

Those who got calls are probably celebrating. I bet we'll find out tomorrow at the earliest if any calls went out tonight.

seriously, only one call in the last 5 weeks. LOL. ...I know there are a lot more people than the ones on this board, but they must be acting frugal with acceptances lately.

i just looked back at last years thread and it seem like actually not all that many ppl were getting in right at this time either...

still, this is really miserable waiting, isnt it?

AHHH

also i saw some ppl saying they got calls later in the week so who knows!

last night I had a dream that they had hidden cameras in that little waiting room to secretly film us and used that in the admission process. It seems like this whole process is a psychological endurance test and that they are so tricky about everything, the MCAT - tricky, the interviews - tricky, say this don't say that, wear this, don't wear that - for the love of... I think because I am still laughing I passed the test, but what a weird dream!
